A critical test has been presented to establish the nature of the kinetic pathways for the decomposition of Fe-12 at.% Si alloy below the metastable tricritical point. The results, based on the measurements of saturation magnetization, establish that a congruent ordering from B2 --> D0(3) precedes the development of a B2 + D0(3) two-phase field, consistent with the predictions in 1976 of Allen and Cahn.

Cryogel matrices composed of different polymeric blends were synthesized, yielding a unique combination of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with the presence or absence of charged surface. Four such cryogel matrices composed of polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAAC), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were tested for growth of different hybridoma cell lines and production of antibody in static culture. All the matrices were capable for the adherence of hybridoma cell lines 6A4D7, B7B10, and H9E10 to the polymeric surfaces as well as for the efficient monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. PAAC proved to be relatively better in terms of both mAb production and cell growth. Further, PAAC cryogel was designed into three different formats, monolith, disks, and beads, and used as packing material for packed-bed bioreactor. Longterm cultivation of 6A4D7 cell line on PAAC cryogel scaffold in all the three formats could be successfully done for a period of 6 weeks under static conditions. Continuous packed-bed bioreactor was setup using 6A4D7 hybridoma cell line in the three reactor formats. The reactors ran continuously for a period of 60 days during which mAb production and metabolism of cells in the bioreactors were monitored periodically. The monolith bioreactor performed most efficiently over a period of 60 days and produced a total of 57.5 mg of antibody in the first 30 days (in 500 mL) with a highest concentration of 115 mu g mL(-1), which is fourfold higher than t-flask culture. The results demonstrate that appropriate chemistry and geometry of the bioreactor matrix for cell growth and immobilization can enhance the reactor productivity. A compression moulded Kevlar-phenolic resin composite consisting of 30 wt% continuous fibres was slid against a steel disc such that the fibre axis was normal to the sliding plane. The sliding experiments were conducted in a normal pressure range of 0.47–4.27 MPa and at a sliding speed of 0.5 ms–1. The initial sliding interaction is abrasive. With further sliding, as patches of polymer transfer film develop on the polymer pin and counterface, the interaction becomes adhesive and steady-state friction is established. The wear resistance of the polymer was found to be related to the stability of this film.

Improved performance of plasma in raw engine exhaust treatment is reported. A new type of reactor referred to as of cross-flow dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was used, in which the gas flow is perpendicular to the corona electrode. In raw exhaust environment, the cross-flow (radial-flow) reactor exhibits a superior performance with regard to NOX removal when compared to that with axial flow of gas. Experiments were conducted at different flow rates ranging from 2 L/min to 25 L/min. The plasma assisted barrier discharge reactor has shown encouraging results in NOx removal at high flow rates.

The amount of reactive power margin available in a system determines its proximity to voltage instability under normal and emergency conditions. More the reactive power margin, better is the systems security and vice-versa. A hypothetical way of improving the reactive margin of a synchronous generator is to reduce the real power generation within its mega volt-ampere (MVA) ratings. This real power generation reduction will affect its power contract agreements entered in the electricity market. Owing to this, the benefit that the generator foregoes will have to be compensated by paying them some lost opportunity cost. The objective of this study is three fold. Firstly, the reactive power margins of the generators are evaluated. Secondly, they are improved using a reactive power optimization technique and optimally placed unified power flow controllers. Thirdly, the reactive power capacity exchanges along the tie-lines are evaluated under base case and improved conditions. A detailed analysis of all the reactive power sources and sinks scattered throughout the network is carried out in the study. Studies are carried out on a real life, three zone, 72-bus equivalent Indian southern grid considering normal and contingency conditions with base case operating point and optimised results presented.

This paper investigates the diversity-multiplexing gain tradeoff (DMT) of a time-division duplex (TDD) single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver (CSIR) and partial CSI at the transmitter (CSIT). The partial CSIT is acquired through a training sequence from the receiver to the transmitter. The training sequence is chosen in an intelligent manner based on the CSIR, to reduce the training length by a factor of r, the number of receive antennas. We show that, for the proposed training scheme and a given channel coherence time, the diversity order increases linearly with r for nonzero multiplexing gain. This is a significant improvement over conventional orthogonal training schemes.

The present work is based on four static molds using nozzles of different port diameter, port angle, and immersion depth. It has been observed that the meniscus is wavy. The wave amplitude shows a parabolic variation with the nozzle exit velocity. The dimensionless amplitude is found to vary linearly with the Froude number. Vortex formation and bubble entrainment by the wave occurs at the meniscus beyond a critical flow rate, depending upon the nozzle configuration, immersion depth, and the mold aspect ratio.

An adaptive optimization algorithm using backpropogation neural network model for dynamic identification is developed. The algorithm is applied to maximize the cellular productivity of a continuous culture of baker's yeast. The robustness of the algorithm is demonstrated in determining and maintaining the optimal dilution rate of the continuous bioreactor in presence of disturbances in environmental conditions and microbial culture characteristics. The simulation results show that a significant reduction in time required to reach optimal operating levels can be achieved using neural network model compared with the traditional dynamic linear input-output model. The extension of the algorithm for multivariable adaptive optimization of continuous bioreactor is briefly discussed.

A structured systems methodology was developed to analyse the problems of production interruptions occurring at random intervals in continuous process type manufacturing systems. At a macro level the methodology focuses on identifying suitable investment policies to reduce interruptions of a total manufacturing system that is a combination of several process plants. An interruption-tree-based simulation model was developed for macroanalysis. At a micro level the methodology focuses on finding the effects of alternative configurations of individual process plants on the overall system performance. A Markov simulation model was developed for microlevel analysis. The methodology was tested with an industry-specific application.

The ability of Static Var Compensators (SVCs) to rapidly and continuously control reactive power in response to changing system conditions can result in the improvement of system stability and also increase the power transfer in the transmission system. This paper concerns the application of strategically located SVCs to enhance the transient stability limits and the direct evaluation of the effect of these SVCs on transient stability using a Structure Preserving Energy Function (SPEF). The SVC control system can be modelled from the steady- state control characteristic to accurately simulate its effect on transient stability. Treating the SVC as a voltage-dependent reactive power load leads to the derivation of a path-independent SPEF for the SVC. Case studies on a 10-machine test system using multiple SVCs illustrate the effects of SVCs on transient stability and its accurate prediction.

The jet characteristics and the fluid flow pattern in a continuous slab caster have been studied using a water model. The fluid jet is studied under free fall and submerged discharge conditions. In the latter case, the jet was followed by dye-injection technique and image analyser was used to find out the effect of nozzle parameters on jet-spread angle, jet-discharge angle and the volume entrainment by the jet. All free-fall jets with nozzle port angle zero and upward are found to be spinning. Some of the free-fall jets with downward nozzle-port angle are found to be spinning and rest are smooth. The spinning direction of the jets are found to change with time. The well depth, port diameter and the inner diameter of the nozzle have a clear effect on the free-fall jets with downward port angle. The jet-spread angle is found to be about 17-degrees for smooth jets. The spread angle for spinning jet increases as the nozzle-port angle is increased from downward 25 to upward 15-degrees. The jet-discharge angle is always downward even when the nozzle-discharge ports are angled upward. The extent of volume entrainment by the spinning jet is higher and it increases as the nozzle-port angle is increased from 25 downward to 15-degrees upward.
