Structural, magnetic and hyperfine interaction measurements have been carried out on the novel compound La(3.5)Ru(4)O(13) prepared under two different atmospheres (air and oxygen flow). This compound is formed in the orthorhombic structure (space group Pmmm, # 47). The coexistence of the triple-layered perovskite-type planes (quasi-2D structure) and the rutile-like slabs (1D structure) leads to interesting magnetic and electronic properties in this compound. The magnetic susceptibility of this system shows a peak at T similar to 47 K associated with antiferromagnetic interactions. The Curie-Weiss behaviour of the susceptibility provides an effective magnetic moment consistent with Ru ions in low-spin state. Perturbed angular correlation measurements carried out with (111)Cd probe in the temperature range 10-60 K reveal only quadrupole interactions and indicate the occurrence of structural distortions for T<40K. This study presents the syntheses and characterization of 2-mercaptopyridine (pyS(-)) complexes containing ruthenium(II) with the following general formula [Ru(pyS)(2)(P-P)], P-P = (c-dppen) = cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene) (1); (dppe)=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (2); (dppp)=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (3) and (dppb) = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (4). The complexes were synthesized from the mer- or fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-P)] precursors in the presence of triethylamine in methanol solution with dependence of the product on the P-P ligand. The reaction of pyS- with a ruthenium complex containing a bulky aromatic diphosphine dppb disclosed a major product with a dangling coordinated dppbO-P, the [Ru(pyS)(2)(NO)(eta(1)-dppbO-P)]PF(6) (5). In addition, this work also presents and discusses the spectroscopic and electrochemical behavior of 1-5. and report the X-ray structures for I and S. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex double-bridged by an N-aromatic ligand 2-mercaptopyridine (2-pyridinethiol or 2-pyridyl mercaptan) and a methyl sulfoxide (dmso) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The reported compound with formula [Ru(2)Cl(3) (mu-pyS)(mu-dmso)(dmso)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O, [C(15)H(36)Cl(3)NO(7)S(6)Ru(2)] (P2/c, a = 13.8175(2) angstrom, b = 10.5608(2) angstrom, c = 21.3544 (3) angstrom, beta = 106.090(1)degrees, V = 2,994.05(8) angstrom(3), Z = 4) represents a seven-membered ring system with both rutheniums in an octahedral geometry. All the hydrogen bonds (C-H-Cl) and the van der Waals contacts give rise to three-dimensional network in the structure and add stability to the dinuclear compound. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation of a dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex double-bridged by an N-aromatic ligand 2-mercaptopyridine and dmso have been reported. The study also provided valuable insight into bioinorganic chemistry as continuing efforts are being made to develop metal-based cancer chemotherapeutics. A major feature of this paper is the resolution of a double bridged ruthenium structure which contributes to a better understanding of ruthenium reactivity.

The Granada ignimbrite, an Upper Miocene volcanic unit from the northern Puna, previously has been interpreted as an extensive ignimbrite (>2300 km(2)) associated with eruptions from the Vilama caldera (trap-door event). On the basis of new data, we revise its correlation and redefine the unit as a compound, high aspect ratio ignimbrite, erupted at approximately 9.8 Ma. Calculated volumes (similar to 100 km(3)) are only moderate in comparison with other large volume (>1000 km(3)) ignimbrites that erupted approximately 2-6 m.y. later in the region (e.g. Vilama, Panizos, Atana). Six new volcanic units are recognized from sequences previously correlated with Granada (only one sourced from the same center). Consequently, the area ascribed to the Granada ignimbrite is substantially reduced (630 km(2)), and links to the Vilama caldera are not supported. Transport directions suggest the volcanic source for the Granada ignimbrite corresponds to vents buried under younger (>= 7.9-5 Ma) volcanic rocks of the Abra Granada volcanic complex. Episodes of caldera collapse at some stage of eruption are likely, though their nature and timing cannot be defined from available data. The eruption of the Granada ignimbrite marks the onset of a phase of large volume (caldera-sourced) volcanism in the northern Puna. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we introduce the Weibull power series (WPS) class of distributions which is obtained by compounding Weibull and power series distributions where the compounding procedure follows same way that was previously carried out by Adamidis and Loukas (1998) This new class of distributions has as a particular case the two-parameter exponential power series (EPS) class of distributions (Chahkandi and Gawk 2009) which contains several lifetime models such as exponential geometric (Adamidis and Loukas 1998) exponential Poisson (Kus 2007) and exponential logarithmic (Tahmasbi and Rezaei 2008) distributions The hazard function of our class can be increasing decreasing and upside down bathtub shaped among others while the hazard function of an EPS distribution is only decreasing We obtain several properties of the WPS distributions such as moments order statistics estimation by maximum likelihood and inference for a large sample Furthermore the EM algorithm is also used to determine the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters and we discuss maximum entropy characterizations under suitable constraints Special distributions are studied in some detail Applications to two real data sets are given to show the flexibility and potentiality of the new class of distributions (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

The hemeprotein myeloperoxidase (MPO) participates in innate immune defense through its ability to generate potent microbicidal oxidants. However, these oxidants are also key mediators of the tissue damage associated with many inflammatory diseases. Thus, there is considerable interest in developing therapeutically useful MPO inhibitors. Here, we used structure-based drug design (SBDD) and ligand-based drug design (LBDD) to select for potentially new and selective MPO inhibitors. A pharmacophore model was developed based on the crystal structure of human MPO in complex with salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), a known inhibitor of the enzyme. The pharmacophore model was used to screen the ZINC database for potential ligands, which were further filtered on the basis of their physical-chemical properties and docking score. The filtered compounds were visually inspected, and nine were purchased for experimental studies. Surprisingly, almost all of the selected compounds belonged to the aromatic hydrazide class, which had been previously described as MPO inhibitors. The compounds selected by virtual screening were shown to inhibit the chlorinating activity of MPO; the top four compounds displayed IC(50) values ranging from 1.0 to 2.8 mM. MPO inactivation by the most effective compound was shown to be irreversible. Overall, our results show that SBDD and LBDD may be useful for the rational development of new MPO inhibitors.

Proteins containing reactive cysteine residues (protein-Cys) are receiving increased attention as mediators of hydrogen peroxide signaling. These proteins are mainly identified by mining the thiol proteomes of oxidized protein-Cys in cells and tissues. However, it is difficult to determine if oxidation occurs through a direct reaction with hydrogen peroxide or by thiol-disulfide exchange reactions. Kinetic studies with purified proteins provide invaluable information about the reactivity of protein-Cys residues with hydrogen peroxide. Previously, we showed that the characteristic UV-Vis spectrum of horseradish peroxidase compound I, produced from the oxidation of horseradish peroxidase by hydrogen peroxide, is a simple, reliable, and useful tool to determine the second-order rate constant of the reaction of reactive protein-Cys with hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite. Here, the method is fully described and extended to quantify reactive protein-Cys residues and micromolar concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Members of the peroxiredoxin family were selected for the demonstration and validation of this methodology. In particular, we determined the pK(a) of the peroxidatic thiol of rPrx6 (5.2) and the second-order rate constant of its reactions with hydrogen peroxide ((3.4 +/- 0.2) x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)) and peroxynitrite ((3.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1)) at pH 7.4 and 25 degrees C. The improvement of the enzymatic performance of Aspergillus terreus and Rhizopus oryzae in enantioselective bioreductions by using glycerol as a co-solvent has been studied. In the most of the bioreductions, glycerol has demonstrated its potential for improved conversions (up to >99%) and enantioselectivities (up to >99%) when compared to reactions in aqueous or other aqueous-organic media (THF, diethyl ether, toluene, DMSO and acetonitrile). Moreover, high isolated yields of the desired chiral alcohols have been obtained on a preparative scale showing the great potential of this green solvent in biocatalysis. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Organotellurium(]V) compounds have been reported to have multiple biological activities including cysteine protease-inhibitory activity, mainly cathepsin B. As cathepsin B is a highly predictive indicator for prognosis and diagnosis of cancer, a possible antitumor potential for these new compounds is expected. In this work, it was investigated the effectiveness of organotellurium(IV) RT-04 to produce lethal effects in the human promyelocytic leukaemia cell line HL60. Using the MTT tetrazolium reduction test, and trypan blue exclusion assay, the IC50 for the compound after 24 h incubation was 6.8 and 0.35 mu M, respectively. Moreover, the compound was found to trigger apoptosis in HL60 cells, inducing DNA fragmentation and caspase-3, -6, and -9 activations. The apoptsosis-induced by RT-04 is probably related to the diminished Bcl-2 expression, observed by RT-PCR, in HL60-treated cells. In vivo studies demonstrated that the RT-04 treatment (2.76 mg/kg given for three consecutive days) produces no significant toxic effects for bone marrow and spleen CFU-GM. However, higher doses (5.0 and 10 mg/kg) produced a dose-dependent reduction in the number of CFU-GM of RT-04-treated mice. These results suggest that RT-04 is able to induce apoptosis in HL60 cells by Bcl-2 expression down-modulation. Further studies are necessary to better clarify the effects of this compound on bone marrow normal cells. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The aim of the study was to investigate the anti-trypanocidal activities of natural chromene and chromene derivatives. Five chromenes were isolated from Piper gaudichaudianum and P. aduncum, and a further seven derivatives were prepared using standard reduction, methylation and acetylation procedures. These compounds were assayed in vitro against epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. The results showed that the most of the compounds, especially those possessing electron-donating groups as substituents on the aromatic ring, showed potent trypanocidal activity. The most active compound, [(2S)-methyl-2-methyl-8-(3 ``-methylbut-2 ``-enyl)-2-(4`-methylpent-3`-enyl)-2H-chromene-6-carboxylate], was almost four times more potent than benznidazole (the positive control) and showed an IC50 of 2.82 mu M. The results reveal that chromenes exhibit significant anti-trypanocidal activities and indicate that this class of natural product should be considered further in the development of new and more potent drugs for use in the treatment of Chagas disease.

The burning of organic residues and wastes in furnaces of cement industries has been an attractive and lucrative approach to eliminate stocks of these pollutants. There is a potential risk for producing PAH in the workplace of industries burning organic wastes, so that highly sensitive analytical methods are needed for monitoring the air quality of these environments. An official method for determination of PAH is based on liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection at fixed excitation and emission wavelengths. We demonstrate that a suitable choice of these wavelengths, which are changed during the chromatographic run, significantly improves the detectability of PAH in atmosphere and particulate matter collected in cement industries.

2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) is classically known as a mitochondrial uncoupler and, at high concentrations, is toxic to a variety of cells. However, it has recently been shown that, at subtoxic concentrations, DNP protects neurons against a variety of insults and promotes neuronal differentiation and neuritogenesis. The molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the beneficial neuroactive properties of DNP are still largely unknown. We have now used DNA microarray analysis to investigate changes in gene expression in rat hippocampal neurons in culture treated with low micromolar concentrations of DNP. Under conditions that did not affect neuronal viability, high-energy phosphate levels or mitochondrial oxygen consumption, DNP induced up-regulation of 275 genes and down-regulation of 231 genes. Significantly, several up-regulated genes were linked to intracellular cAMP signaling, known to be involved in neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and neuronal survival. Differential expression of specific genes was validated by quantitative RT-PCR using independent samples. Results shed light on molecular mechanisms underlying neuroprotection by DNP and point to possible targets for development of novel therapeutics for neurodegenerative disorders.

The second-order rate constants of thiolysis by n-heptanethiol on 4-nitro-N-n-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide (4NBN) are strongly affected by the water-methanol binary mixture composition reaching its maximum at around 50% mole fraction. In parallel solvent effects on 4NBN absorption molar extinction coefficient also shows a maximum at this composition region. From the spectroscopic study of reactant and product and the known H-bond capacity of the mixture a rationalization that involves specific solvent H-donor interaction with the nitro group is proposed to explain the kinetic data. Present findings also show a convenient methodology to obtain strongly fluorescent imides, valuable for peptide and analogs labeling as well as for thio-naphthalimide derivatives preparations. The simple halogenation of alkynes in conventional organic reactions gives a blend of cis and trans isomers. It is proposed then, a synthesis of stereospecific halogenation of alkynes in trans position, using palladacycle as intermediaries. The recrystallization of the compound obtained by bromination of 2-Styrylpyridine, with cyclepalladium intermediary results in a single crystal, which is subjected to X-ray diffraction. The crystal packing is established through weak interactions of three types. The first one is of the type pi x pi interactions, from symmetry operation, between the centroids. The second one is of the type C-X center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. And the last type is an anomalous intermolecular interaction between halogens, C-X center dot center dot center dot X-C, with bond distances smaller than the sum of the van der Waals radii. The conformation on the C=C bond is trans and the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is (with esd approximate) 18.1(3)degrees. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
