Three heterometallic trinuclear Schiff base complexes, [{GuL(1)(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)]center dot 4H(2)O (1), [{CuL2(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (2), and [{CuL3(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (3) (HL1 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-methylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL3 = 7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one), were synthesized. All three complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV spectroscopies, and thermal analysis. Two of them (1 and 3) were also characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 forms a hydrogen-bonded one-dimensional metal-organic framework that stabilizes a helical water chain into its cavity, but when any of the amine hydrogen atoms of the Schiff base are replaced by methyl groups, as in L 2 and L 3, the water chain, vanishes, showing explicitly the importance of the host-guest H-bonding interactions for the stabilization of a water cluster.

The adsorption and hydrogenation of acrolein on the Ag(111) surface has been investigated by high resolution synchrotron XPS, NEXAFS, and temperature programmed reaction. The molecule adsorbs intact at all coverages and its adsorption geometry is critically important in determining chemoselectivity toward the formation of allyl alcohol, the desired but thermodynamically disfavored product. In the absence of hydrogen adatoms (H(a)), acrolein lies almost parallel to the metal surface; high coverages force the C=C bond to tilt markedly, likely rendering it less vulnerable toward reaction with hydrogen adatoms. Reaction with coadsorbed H(a) yields allyl alcohol, propionaldehyde, and propanol, consistent with the behavior of practical dispersed Ag catalysts operated at atmospheric pressure: formation of all three hydrogenation products is surface reaction rate limited. Overall chemoselectivity is strongly influenced by secondary reactions of allyl alcohol. At low H(a) coverages, the C=C bond in the newly formed allyl alcohol molecule is strongly tilted with respect to the surface, rendering it immune to attack by H(a) and leading to desorption of the unsaturated alcohol. In contrast with this, at high H(a) coverages, the C=C bond in allyl alcohol lies almost parallel to the surface, undergoes hydrogenation by H(a), and the saturated alcohol (propanol) desorbs.

The title compound, [Cu(C4H8N3O2)(2)]center dot 2C(5)H(9)NO, consists of a neutral copper complex, in which the Cu II centre coordinates to two bis(methoxycarbimido) aminate ligands, solvated by two molecules of 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one. The complex is planar and centrosymmetric, with the Cu II centre occupying a crystallographic inversion centre and adopting approximately square-planar geometry. N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen-bonding interactions exist between the amine NH groups of the ligands and the O atoms of the 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one molecules. The associated units pack to form sheets.

The Mannich reaction of hydrazones can be performed without solvent by simply mixing the hydrazone with two to three equivalents of a secondary amine and formaldehyde. Best yields and conditions are obtained with p-nitro substituted arylhydrazones. These conditions allow the efficient coupling of simple hydrazones that failed to react in toluene or ethanol solutions.

A series of heterometal substituted gallium phosphates, (N2C4H7)(0.5+x)[Me0.5+xGa2.5-x(PO4)(3)] (Me = Mn, Fe, Co and Zn, x approximate to 0.25), has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions at 433 K in ethylene glycol using I-methylimidazole as a templating agent and their structures determined at 150 K using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compounds are isostructural, crystallising in the monoclinic space group C 2/c, with lattice parameters ca. 15 x 13 x 15 angstrom and beta = 112 degrees, and adopt the laumontite framework type (LAU). The incorporation of 1-methylimidazole cations into the one-dimensional pore systems of these materials is about three quarters the uptake value obtained previously for the less-bulky amine cations of imidazole and pyridine in other MeGaPO laumontites, which have the formula (TH)[MeGa2(PO4)(3)] (Me = Mn, Fe, Co and Zn; T = C5H5N and C3N2H4). The size, shape and charge of the amine clearly influence both the metal-phosphate framework stoichiometry (i.e. Me2+:Ga3+ ratio) and the framework charge. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCOXH)(H2O)] and PMePh3[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCO)] (PyCOXH = Pyridine-2-carboxaldoxime and PyCOH = Pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) have been synthesized. Both complexes have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods; in addition, the carboxylate complex has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The carboxylate complex is a more efficient catalyst than the oxime complex for epoxidation of olefins and shows excellent catalytic activity for the substrates: cyclooctene, cinnamyl alcohol, allyl alcohol and 1-hexene.

This paper compares and contrasts, for the first time, one- and two-component gelation systems that are direct structural analogues and draws conclusions about the molecular recognition pathways that underpin fibrillar self-assembly. The new one-component systems comprise L-lysine-based dendritic headgroups covalently connected to an aliphatic diamine spacer chain via an amide bond, One-component gelators with different generations of headgroup (from first to third generation) and different length spacer chains are reported. The self-assembly of these dendrimers in toluene was elucidated using thermal measurements, circular dichroism (CD) and NMR spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The observations are compared with previous results for the analogous two-component gelation system in which the dendritic headgroups are bound to the aliphatic spacer chain noncovalently via acid-amine interactions. The one-component system is inherently a more effective gelator, partly as a consequence of the additional covalent amide groups that provide a new hydrogen bonding molecular recognition pathway, whereas the two-component analogue relies solely on intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions between the chiral dendritic headgroups. Furthermore, because these amide groups are important in the assembly process for the one-component system, the chiral information preset in the dendritic headgroups is not always transcribed into the nanoscale assembly, whereas for the two-component system, fiber formation is always accompanied by chiral ordering because the molecular recognition pathway is completely dependent on hydrogen bond interactions between well-organized chiral dendritic headgroups.

Poly[1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane(2+) [hepta-mu-sulfidotrisulfidohexaantimony(III)]], {(C10H26N4)[Sb6S10]}(n), consists of novel [Sb6S10](2). layers containing Sb2S2, Sb4S4 and Sb7S7 hetero-rings, which are separated by macrocyclic amine molecules. The macrocyclic amine molecules are disordered over two crystallographically distinct positions and are diprotonated in order to balance the charge of the anionic layers.

The reaction between [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(NCMe)(2)Br] (1) and the ferrocenylamidobenzimidazole ligands FcCO(NH(2)benzim) (L1) and (FcCO)(2)(NHbenzim) (L2) led to a binuclear (2) and a trinuclear (3) Mo-Fe complex, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure of [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(L2)Br] [L2 = {[(eta(5)-C5H5)Fe(eta(5)-C5H4CO)](2)(2-NH-benzimidazol-yl)}] shows that L2 is coordinated to the endo Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2) group in a kappa(2)-N,O-bidentate chelating fashion whereas the Mo-II centre displays a pseudooctahedral environment with Br occupying an equatorial position. Complex 2 was formulated as [MO(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(L1)Br] on the basis of a combination of spectroscopic data, elemental analysis, conductivity and DFT calculations. L1 acts as a kappa(2)-N,N-bidentate ligand. In both L1 and L2, the HOMOs are mainly localised on iron while the C=O bond(s) contribute to the LUMO(s) and the next highest energy orbitals are Fe-allyl antibonding orbitals. When the ligands bind to Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)Br, the greatest difference is that Mo becomes the strongest contributor to the HOMO. Electrochemical studies show that, in complex 2, no electronic interaction exists between the two ferrocenyl ligands and that the first electron has been removed from the Mo-II-centred HOMO. Six ruthenium(II) complexes have been prepared using the tridentate ligands 2,6-bis(benzimidazolyl) pyridine and bis(2-benzimidazolyl methyl) amine and having 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine, PPh3, MeCN and chloride as coligands. The crystal structures of three of the complexes trans-[Ru(bbpH(2))(PPh3)(2)(CH3CN)I(ClO4)(2) center dot 2H(2)O (2), [Ru(bbpH(2))(bpy)Cl]ClO4 (3) and [Ru(bbpH(2))(terpy)](ClO4)(2) (4) are also reported. The complexes show visible region absorption at 402-517 nm, indicating that it is possible to tune the visible region absorption by varying the ancillary ligand. Luminescence behavior of the complexes has been studied both at RT and at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). Luminescence of the complexes is found to be insensitive to the presence of dioxygen. Two of the complexes [Ru(bbpH(2))(bpy)Cl]ClO4 (3) and [Ru(bbpH(2))(terpy]ClO4)(2) (4) show RT emission in the NIR region, having lifetime, quantum yield and radiative constant values suitable for their application as NIR emitter in the solid state devices. The DFT calculations on these two complexes indicate that the metal t(2g) electrons are appreciably delocalized over the ligand backbone. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

Access to 7-allyl substituted norbornene derivatives for tandem olefin metathesis via cationic rearrangement of cyclopropylmethanol substituted norbornenes is shown to be structure dependent. In some cases products that arise from cationic rearrangement of a cyclopropylmethyl cation are furnished. Thionyl chloride is shown to be superior to silica for inducing the desired rearrangement. The chromium(II) antimony(III) sulphicle, [Cr((NH2CH2CH2)(3)N)]Sb4S7, was synthesised under solvothermal conditions from the reaction of Sb2S3. Cr and S dissolved in tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) at 438 K. The products were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. elemental analysis, SQUID magnetometry and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The compound crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.9756(7), b = 10.5191(9), c = 25.880(2) angstrom and beta = 90.864(5)degrees. Alternating SbS33- trigonal pyramids and Sb36 semi-cubes generate Sb4S72- chains which are directly bonded to Cr(tren pendant units. The effective magnetic moment of 4.94(6)mu(B) shows a negligible orbital contribution, in agreement with expectations for Cr(II):d(4) in a (5)A ground state. The measured band gap of 2.14(3) eV is consistent with a correlation between optical band gap and framework density that is established from analysis of a wide range of antimony sulphides. Five new thioantimonates have been synthesized in the presence of organic amines under solvothermal conditions and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the compounds are layered and contain antimony-sulphide anions of stoichiometry [Sb4S7](2-), but the structure of the anion formed is dependent on the amine used in synthesis. (H3N(CH2)(4)NH3)[Sb4S7] (1) contains [Sb4S7](2-) double chains directed along [010]. Weak interchain Sb-S interactions between neighbouring chains cause the double chains to pack into layers in the ab plane. In the [001] direction, the layers of double chains alternate with doubly protonated diaminobutane molecules to which the chains are hydrogen bonded. Compounds of general formula (TH)(2)[Sb4S7] (T= CH3(CH2)(2)NH2 (2), (CH3)(2)CHNH2 (3), CH3(CH2)(3)NH2 (4) and CH3(CH2)(4)NH2 (5)) adopt a more complex structure in which [Sb3S8](7-) units are linked by Sb-3(3-) pyramids to form chains, which in turn are bridged by sulphur atoms to create sheets containing large heterorings. Pairs of such sheets form double layers of four atoms thickness that are stacked along [001]. Protonated amine molecules are located between anionic antimony-sulphide layers to which they are hydrogen bonded. Thermal analysis reveals that the decomposition temperature of materials containing [Sb4S7](2-) anions is dependent both on the structure of the anion, the lowest decomposition temperature being that of the low-dimensional phase (1) and on the identity of the amine, the decomposition temperature decreasing with an increasing number of carbon atoms and decreasing density. A series of novel polyaromatic dendrimers that feature tris-(2-ethylamino)amine as the central core unit has been synthesized up to the third generation by employing a convergent growth strategy. The building blocks 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane and 4-carboxybenzaldehyde were used for dendron construction, a process that involved the cyclic repetition of esterification, oxidation and selective amidation steps. Molecular modelling of this class of dendrimers has been used to predict potential solution state conformations employing molecular mechanics and molecular dynamic simulations. In addition, the results of preliminary metal binding studies using the first generation dendritic system are also outlined. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
