Learning automata are adaptive decision making devices that are found useful in a variety of machine learning and pattern recognition applications. Although most learning automata methods deal with the case of finitely many actions for the automaton, there are also models of continuous-action-set learning automata (CALA). A team of such CALA can be useful in stochastic optimization problems where one has access only to noise-corrupted values of the objective function. In this paper, we present a novel formulation for noise-tolerant learning of linear classifiers using a CALA team. We consider the general case of nonuniform noise, where the probability that the class label of an example is wrong may be a function of the feature vector of the example. The objective is to learn the underlying separating hyperplane given only such noisy examples. We present an algorithm employing a team of CALA and prove, under some conditions on the class conditional densities, that the algorithm achieves noise-tolerant learning as long as the probability of wrong label for any example is less than 0.5. We also present some empirical results to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides us with many means to study biological macromolecules in solution. Proteins in particular are the most intriguing targets for NMR studies. Protein functions are usually ascribed to specific three-dimensional structures but more recently tails, long loops and non-structural polypeptides have also been shown to be biologically active. Examples include prions, -synuclein, amylin and the NEF HIV-protein. However, conformational preferences in coil-like molecules are difficult to study by traditional methods. Residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) have opened up new opportunities; however their analysis is not trivial. Here we show how to interpret RDCs from these weakly structured molecules. The most notable residual dipolar couplings arise from steric obstruction effects. In dilute liquid crystalline media as well as in anisotropic gels polypeptides encounter nematogens. The shape of a polypeptide conformation limits the encounter with the nematogen. The most elongated conformations may come closest whereas the most compact remain furthest away. As a result there is slightly more room in the solution for the extended than for the compact conformations. This conformation-dependent concentration effect leads to a bias in the measured data. The measured values are not arithmetic averages but essentially weighted averages over conformations. The overall effect can be calculated for random flight chains and simulated for more realistic molecular models. Earlier there was an implicit thought that weakly structured or non-structural molecules would not yield to any observable residual dipolar couplings. However, in the pioneering study by Shortle and Ackerman RDCs were clearly observed. We repeated the study for urea-denatured protein at high temperature and also observed indisputably RDCs. This was very convincing to us but we could not possibly accept the proposed reason for the non-zero RDCs, namely that there would be some residual structure left in the protein that to our understanding was fully denatured. We proceeded to gain understanding via simulations and elementary experiments. In measurements we used simple homopolymers with only two labelled residues and we simulated the data to learn more about the origin of RDCs. We realized that RDCs depend on the position of the residue as well as on the length of the polypeptide. Investigations resulted in a theoretical model for RDCs from coil-like molecules. Later we extended the studies by molecular dynamics. Somewhat surprisingly the effects are small for non-structured molecules whereas the bias may be large for a small compact protein. All in all the work gave clear and unambiguous results on how to interpret RDCs as structural and dynamic parameters of weakly structured proteins.

Identifying unusual or anomalous patterns in an underlying dataset is an important but challenging task in many applications. The focus of the unsupervised anomaly detection literature has mostly been on vectorised data. However, many applications are more naturally described using higher-order tensor representations. Approaches that vectorise tensorial data can destroy the structural information encoded in the high-dimensional space, and lead to the problem of the curse of dimensionality. In this paper we present the first unsupervised tensorial anomaly detection method, along with a randomised version of our method. Our anomaly detection method, the One-class Support Tensor Machine (1STM), is a generalisation of conventional one-class Support Vector Machines to higher-order spaces. 1STM preserves the multiway structure of tensor data, while achieving significant improvement in accuracy and efficiency over conventional vectorised methods. We then leverage the theory of nonlinear random projections to propose the Randomised 1STM (R1STM). Our empirical analysis on several real and synthetic datasets shows that our R1STM algorithm delivers comparable or better accuracy to a state-of-the-art deep learning method and traditional kernelised approaches for anomaly detection, while being approximately 100 times faster in training and testing.

We present experimental validation of a new reconstruction method for off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM). This method effectively suppresses the object autocorrelation, namely, the zero-order term, from holographic data, thereby improving the reconstruction bandwidth of complex wavefronts. The algorithm is based on nonlinear filtering and can be applied to standard DHM setups with realistic recording conditions. We study the robustness of the technique under different experimental configurations, and quantitatively demonstrate its enhancement capabilities on phase signals.

A vibration isolator is described which incorporates a near-zero-spring-rate device within its operating range. The device is an assembly of a vertical spring in parallel with two inclined springs. A low spring rate is achieved by combining the equivalent stiffness in the vertical direction of the inclined springs with the stiffness of the vertical central spring. It is shown that there is a relation between the geometry and the stiffness of the individual springs that results in a low spring rate. Computer simulation studies of a single-degree-of-freedom model for harmonic base input show that the performance of the proposed scheme is superior to that of the passive schemes with linear springs and skyhook damping configuration. The response curves show that, for small to large amplitudes of base disturbance, the system goes into resonance at low frequencies of excitation. Thus, it is possible to achieve very good isolation over a wide low-frequency band. Also, the damper force requirements for the proposed scheme are much lower than for the damper force of a skyhook configuration or a conventional linear spring with a semi-active damper.

Adiabatic quantum computation is based on the adiabatic evolution of quantum systems. We analyze a particular class of quantum adiabatic evolutions where either the initial or final Hamiltonian is a one-dimensional projector Hamiltonian on the corresponding ground state. The minimum-energy gap, which governs the time required for a successful evolution, is shown to be proportional to the overlap of the ground states of the initial and final Hamiltonians. We show that such evolutions exhibit a rapid crossover as the ground state changes abruptly near the transition point where the energy gap is minimum. Furthermore, a faster evolution can be obtained by performing a partial adiabatic evolution within a narrow interval around the transition point. These results generalize and quantify earlier works.

One-dimensional (1D) proton NMR spectra of enantiomers are generally undecipherable in chiral orienting poly-gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG)/CDCl3 solvent. This arises due to large number of couplings, in addition to superposition of spectra from both the enantiomers, severely hindering the H-1 detection. On the other hand in the present study the benefit is derived front the presence of several couplings among the entire network of interacting protons. Transition selective 1D H-1-H-1 correlation experiment (1D-COSY) which utilizes the Coupling assisted transfer of magnetization not only for unraveling the overlap but also for the selective detection of enantiopure spectrum is reported. The experiment is simple, easy to implement and provides accurate eanantiomeric excess in addition to the determination of the proton-proton couplings of an enantiomer within a short experimental time (few minutes). Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as complementary alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for grid energy storage due to the abundance of sodium. However, low capacity, poor rate capability, and cycling stability of existing anodes significantly hinder the practical applications of SIBs. Herein, ultrathin two-dimensional SnS2 nanosheets (3-4 nm in thickness) are synthesized via a facile refluxing process toward enhanced sodium storage. The SnS2 nanosheets exhibit a high apparent diffusion coefficient of Na+ and fast sodiation/desodiation reaction kinetics. In half-cells, the nanosheets deliver a high reversible capacity of 733 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, which still remains up to 435 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1. The cell has a high capacity retention of 647 mA h g-1 during the 50th cycle at 0.1 A g-1, which is by far the best for SnS2, suggesting that nanosheet morphology is beneficial to improve cycling stability in addition to rate capability. The SnS2 nanosheets also show encouraging performance in a full cell with a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode. In addition, the sodium storage mechanism is investigated by ex situ XRD coupled with high-resolution TEM. The high specific capacity, good rate capability, and cycling durability suggest that SnS2 nanosheets have great potential working as anodes for high-performance SIBs. © 2015 American Chemical Society.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal oxide systems present exotic electronic properties and high specific surface areas, and also demonstrate promising applications ranging from electronics to energy storage. Yet, in contrast to other types of nanostructures, the question as to whether we could assemble 2D nanomaterials with an atomic thickness from molecules in a general way, which may give them some interesting properties such as those of graphene, still remains unresolved. Herein, we report a generalized and fundamental approach to molecular self-assembly synthesis of ultrathin 2D nanosheets of transition metal oxides by rationally employing lamellar reverse micelles. It is worth emphasizing that the synthesized crystallized ultrathin transition metal oxide nanosheets possess confined thickness, high specific surface area and chemically reactive facets, so that they could have promising applications in nanostructured electronics, photonics, sensors, and energy conversion and storage devices.

Analytical expressions are derived, using asymptotics, for the fluid-structure coupled wavenumbers in a one-dimensional (1-D) structural acoustic waveguide. The coupled dispersion equation of the system is rewritten in the form of the uncoupled dispersion equation with an added term due to the fluid-structure coupling. As a result of this coupling, the prior uncoupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers, now become coupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers. A fluid-loading parameter e, defined as the ratio of mass of fluid to mass of the structure per unit area, is introduced which when set to zero yields the uncoupled dispersion equation. The coupled wavenumber is then expressed in terms of an asymptotic series in e. Analytical expressions are found as e is varied from small to large values. Different asymptotic expansions are used for different frequency ranges with continuous transitions occurring between them. This systematic derivation helps to continuously track the wavenumber solutions as the fluid-loading parameter is varied from small to large values. Though the asymptotic expansion used is limited to the first-order correction factor, the results are close to the numerical results. A general trend is that a given wavenumber branch transits from a rigid-walled solution to a pressure-release solution with increasing E. Also, it is found that at any frequency where two wavenumbers intersect in the uncoupled analysis, there is no more an-intersection in the coupled case, but a gap is created at that frequency. The integral diaphragm pressure transducer consists of a diaphragm machined from precipitation hardened martensitic (APX4) steel. Its performance is quite significant as it depends upon various factors such as mechanical properties including induced residual stress levels, metallurgical and physical parameters due to different stages of processing involved. Hence, the measurement and analysis of residual stress becomes very important from the point of in-service assessment of a component. In the present work, the stress measurements have been done using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, which is a non-destructive test (NDT). This method is more reliable and widely used compared to the other NDT techniques. The metallurgical aspects have been studied by adopting the conventional metallographic practices including examination of microstructure using light microscope. The dimensional measurements have been carried out using dimensional gauge. The results of the present investigation reveals that the diaphragm material after undergoing series of realization processes has yielded good amount of retained austenite in it. Also, the presence of higher compressive stresses induced in the transducer results in non-linearity, zero shift and dimensional instability. The problem of higher retained austenite content and higher compressive stress have been overcome by adopting a new realization process involving machining and cold and hot stabilization soak which has brought down the retained austenite content to about 5–6% and acceptable level of compressive stress in the range −100 to −150 MPa with fine tempered martensitic phase structure and good dimensional stability. The new realization process seems to be quite effective in terms of controlling retained austenite content, residual stress, metallurgical phase as well as dimensional stability and this may result in minimum zero shift of the diaphragm system.

These are used to characterize the image of Schwartz class of rapidly decreasing functions f on R-n and C-n under these semigroups. The image of the space of tempered distributions is also considered and a Paley-Wiener theorem for the windowed (short-time) Fourier transform is proved.

Background: The incidence of all forms of congenital heart defects is 0.75%. For patients with congenital heart defects, life-expectancy has improved with new treatment modalities. Structural heart defects may require surgical or catheter treatment which may be corrective or palliative. Even those with corrective therapy need regular follow-up due to residual lesions, late sequelae, and possible complications after interventions. Aims: The aim of this thesis was to evaluate cardiac function before and after treatment for volume overload of the right ventricle (RV) caused by atrial septal defect (ASD), volume overload of the left ventricle (LV) caused by patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and pressure overload of the LV caused by coarctation of the aorta (CoA), and to evaluate cardiac function in patients with Mulibrey nanism. Methods: In Study I, of the 24 children with ASD, 7 underwent surgical correction and 17 percutaneous occlusion of ASD. Study II had 33 patients with PDA undergoing percutaneous occlusion. In Study III, 28 patients with CoA underwent either surgical correction or percutaneous balloon dilatation of CoA. Study IV comprised 26 children with Mulibrey nanism. A total of 76 healthy voluntary children were examined as a control group. In each study, controls were matched to patients. All patients and controls underwent clinical cardiovascular examinations, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) echocardiographic examinations, and blood sampling for measurement of natriuretic peptides prior to the intervention and twice or three times thereafter. Control children were examined once by 2D and 3D echocardiography. M-mode echocardiography was performed from the parasternal long axis view directed by 2D echocardiography. The left atrium-to-aorta (LA/Ao) ratio was calculated as an index of LA size. The end-diastolic and end-systolic dimensions of LV as well as the end-diastolic thicknesses of the interventricular septum and LV posterior wall were measured. LV volumes, and the fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF) as indices of contractility were then calculated, and the z scores of LV dimensions determined. Diastolic function of LV was estimated from the mitral inflow signal obtained by Doppler echocardiography. In three-dimensional echocardiography, time-volume curves were used to determine end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, stroke volume, and EF. Diastolic and systolic function of LV was estimated from the calculated first derivatives of these curves. Results: (I): In all children with ASD, during the one-year follow-up, the z score of the RV end-diastolic diameter decreased and that of LV increased. However, dilatation of RV did not resolve entirely during the follow-up in either treatment group. In addition, the size of LV increased more slowly in the surgical subgroup but reached control levels in both groups. Concentrations of natriuretic peptides in patients treated percutaneously increased during the first month after ASD closure and normalized thereafter, but in patients treated surgically, they remained higher than in controls. (II): In the PDA group, at baseline, the end-diastolic diameter of LV measured over 2SD in 5 of 33 patients. The median N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (proBNP) concentration before closure measured 72 ng/l in the control group and 141 ng/l in the PDA group (P = 0.001) and 6 months after closure measured 78.5 ng/l (P = NS). Patients differed from control subjects in indices of LV diastolic and systolic function at baseline, but by the end of follow-up, all these differences had disappeared. Even in the subgroup of patients with normal-sized LV at baseline, the LV end-diastolic volume decreased significantly during follow-up. (III): Before repair, the size and wall thickness of LV were higher in patients with CoA than in controls. Systolic blood pressure measured a median 123 mm Hg in patients before repair (P < 0.001) and 103 mm Hg one year thereafter, and 101 mm Hg in controls. The diameter of the coarctation segment measured a median 3.0 mm at baseline, and 7.9 at the 12-month (P = 0.006) follow-up. Thicknesses of the interventricular septum and posterior wall of the LV decreased after repair but increased to the initial level one year thereafter. The velocity time integrals of mitral inflow increased, but no changes were evident in LV dimensions or contractility. During follow-up, serum levels of natriuretic peptides decreased correlating with diastolic and systolic indices of LV function in 2D and 3D echocardiography. (IV): In 2D echocardiography, the interventricular septum and LV posterior wall were thicker, and velocity time integrals of mitral inflow shorter in patients with Mulibrey nanism than in controls. In 3D echocardiography, LV end-diastolic volume measured a median 51.9 (range 33.3 to 73.4) ml/m² in patients and 59.7 (range 37.6 to 87.6) ml/m² in controls (P = 0.040), and serum levels of ANPN and proBNP a median 0.54 (range 0.04 to 4.7) nmol/l and 289 (range 18 to 9170) ng/l, in patients and 0.28 (range 0.09 to 0.72) nmol/l (P < 0.001) and 54 (range 26 to 139) ng/l (P < 0.001) in controls. They correlated with several indices of diastolic LV function. Conclusions (I): During the one-year follow-up after the ASD closure, RV size decreased but did not normalize in all patients. The size of the LV normalized after ASD closure but the increase in LV size was slower in patients treated surgically than in those treated with the percutaneous technique. Serum levels of ANPN and proBNP were elevated prior to ASD closure but decreased thereafter to control levels in patients treated with the percutaneous technique but not in those treated surgically. (II): Changes in LV volume and function caused by PDA disappeared by 6 months after percutaneous closure. Even the children with normal-sized LV benefited from the procedure. (III): After repair of CoA, the RV size and the velocity time integrals of mitral inflow increased, and serum levels of natriuretic peptides decreased. Patients need close follow-up, despite cessation of LV pressure overload, since LV hypertrophy persisted even in normotensive patients with normal growth of the coarctation segment. (IV): In children with Mulibrey nanism, the LV wall was hypertrophied, with myocardial restriction and impairment of LV function. Significant correlations appeared between indices of LV function, size of the left atrium, and levels of natriuretic peptides, indicating that measurement of serum levels of natriuretic peptides can be used in the clinical follow-up of this patient group despite its dependence on loading conditions.

Dimensional analysis using π-theorem is applied to the variables associated with plastic deformation. The dimensionless groups thus obtained are then related and rewritten to obtain the constitutive equation. The constants in the constitutive equation are obtained using published flow stress data for carbon steels. The validity of the constitutive equation is tested for steels with up to 1.54 wt%C at temperatures: 850–1200 °C and strain rates: 6 × 10−6–2 × 10−2 s−1. The calculated flow stress agrees favorably with experimental data.
