Gedächtniswesen & Bildparasiten. ›Lebende Bilder‹ als Weltseuche?

W. J. T. Mitchell, einer der großen gegenwärtigen Theorie-Gurus der Bildertheorie, veröffentlichte 2005 ein Buch mit dem merkwürdigen Titel What Do Pictures Want? In deutscher Übersetzung wurde daraus, mit einem beglaubigenden Vorwort von Hans Belting, Das Leben der Bilder und eine regelrechte Theorie der visuellen Kultur. Bilder sollen Mitchell zufolge eigenen Trieben und Sehnsüchten folgen. Dahinter verbergen sich offensichtlich jene ›kulturellen Replikatoren‹, die Meme, die der umstrittene Biologe Richard Dawkins 1976 in die Welt setzte. – Es lohnt sich, die Entwicklung dieser ›Bildparasiten‹ im menschlichen Gedächtniswesen zu verfolgen.

The use of mechanisms and modes of toxic action in integrated testing strategies: the report and recommendations of a workshop held as part of the European Union OSIRIS Integrated Project

This report on The Potential of Mode of Action (MoA) Information Derived from Non-testing and Screening Methodologies to Support Informed Hazard Assessment, resulted from a workshop organised within OSIRIS (Optimised Strategies for Risk Assessment of Industrial Chemicals through Integration of Non-test and Test Information), a project partly funded by the EU Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme. The workshop was held in Liverpool, UK, on 30 October 2008, with 35 attendees. The goal of the OSIRIS project is to develop integrated testing strategies (ITS) fit for use in the REACH system, that would enable a significant increase in the use of non-testing information for regulatory decision making, and thus minimise the need for animal testing. One way to improve the evaluation of chemicals may be through categorisation by way of mechanisms or modes of toxic action. Defining such groups can enhance read-across possibilities and priority settings for certain toxic modes or chemical structures responsible for these toxic modes. Overall, this may result in a reduction of in vivo testing on organisms, through combining available data on mode of action and a focus on the potentially most-toxic groups. In this report, the possibilities of a mechanistic approach to assist in and guide ITS are explored, and the differences between human health and environmental areas are summarised.

Judaism and Emotion - Texts, Performance, Experience

Judaism and Emotion breaks with stereotypes that, until recently, branded Judaism as a rigid religion of laws and prohibitions. Instead, authors from different fields of research discuss the subject of Judaism and emotion from various scholarly perspectives; they present an understanding of Judaism that does not exclude spirituality and emotions from Jewish thought. In doing so, the contributions account for the relation between the representation of emotion and the actual emotions that living and breathing human beings feel in their everyday lives. While scholars of rabbinic studies and theology take a historical-critical and socio-historical approach to the subject, musicologists and scholars of religious studies focus on the overall research question of how the literary representations of emotion in Judaism are related to ritual and musical performances within Jewish worship. They describe in a more holistic fashion how Judaism serves to integrate various aspects of social life. In doing so, they examine the dynamic interrelationship between Judaism, cognition, and culture.

Dokumente der Berner Reformation: Disputationsthesen, Reformationsmandat und Synodus

Um ihrer Identität willen beziehen sich Kirchen immer wieder auf Texte aus ihrer Geschichte, vor allem aus ihrer Gründungsgeschichte. Sie sind sich bewusst, dass in diesen Dokumenten grundlegende Entscheidungen festgehalten sind, die für ihr Selbstverständnis nach wie vor relevant sind. Im Gespräch mit diesen Texten kann für die eigene Gegenwart geklärt werden, wie Kirchen ihren Auftrag wahrnehmen und wie Christen ihr Glauben und Leben ausgestalten können. In diesem Buch werden die drei zentralen Dokumente der Berner Reformation, die Disputationsthesen, das Reformationsmandat und der Synodus, welche die Berner Kirche geprägt und ihr ein unverwechselbares Profil gegeben haben, in zeitgemässer Übersetzung zugänglich gemacht. Sowohl die Disputationsthesen als auch der Berner Synodus haben der reformatorischen Theologie wichtige Einsichten vermittelt, manche ihrer Formulierungen gehören zu den Perlen der Reformation.
