By mechanism-transformation (anionic --> cationic) polymerization, diblock copolymer of butadiene and 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (PBd-b-PEOx) was synthesized in two steps. The first step is the polymerization of butadiene block capped with ethylene oxide and its tosylation; the second step is the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline. The products were characterized by various methods, such as IR, (HNMR)-H-1, DMA, TEM and SAXS. The results show that the obtained copolymers possess high molecular weight and narrow molecular weighs distribution, and that the content of 1,4-structure was controllable.

compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible blends of LLDPE with styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) has been investigated by means of C-13 CPMAS n.m.r. and d.s.c. techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/SBS blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and SBS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the amorphous region of LLDPE acid PS block domain of SBS, respectively. It was also found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, with serious effects on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE. The effect of LLDPE-g-PS on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE in the LLDPE/SBS blends obviously depends on the composition of the blends, but has little dependence on the PS grafting yields of LLDPE-g-PS. Ion-molecule reactions of four isomeric cyclopropane derivatives were investigated under chemical ionization(CI) conditions, using methane, acetone and vinyl acetate as reagent gases, The methane positive-ion CI mass spectra of each of two isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 are identical, and so are the collision-induced dissociation (CTD) spectra of the protonated molecules of each of the two isomer pairs, The protonation reactions for the isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 occurred on the sites of the carboxyl groups and the R groups, respectively, Differences between isomers 1 and 2 are observed in their acetone (A) positive-ion CI mass spectra and in the CID spectra of their adduct ions ([M+H+A](+)), The adduct ions of compounds 2, 3 and 4 with protonated acetone and with protonated acetone dimer are observed in their CI mass spectra, However, only the adduct ions of compound 1 with protonated acetone appear in its CI mass spectrum, The protonated dimers of each of the four compounds are found in their vinyl acetate positive-ion CI mass spectra, and the CID spectra of these dimers for isomers 1 and 2 can also reflect their stereostructural difference. A series of vinylidene dichloride (VDC) copolymers with methyl acrylate (MA) as comonomer (3-12wt%), was prepared by free-radical suspension copolymerization. The permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured at 1.0 MPa and at 30 degrees C, and those to water vapor were measured at 30 degrees C and 100% relative humidity. All the VDC/MA copolymers studied are semicrystalline. As the MA content increases, the permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor are progressively increased, caused by decrease in crystalline fraction and increase in free volume of VDC/MA copolymers.
Crystallization kinetics and morphology of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(vinyl acetate) blends
Resumo:
The crystallization behavior and morphology of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(vinyl acetate) blends have been studied with DSC, POM, SAXS and WAXD methods. The results indicate that the overall crystallization rate and spherulite growth rate are slower in the blends than that in the pure PHB. The addition of PVAc has no effect on the crystal structure of PHB, but affects its crystalline morphology. During crystallization of PHB, PVAc chains were being rejected into the region between the lamellae of crystalline PHB. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The thermal properties of ethylene propylene copolymer-grafted-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with the ethylene propylene copolymer (EP), the peak values of the melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and the melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of the ungrafted sample was 1.6-1.8, and that of grafted samples were all above 2, which indicated that the grafted monomer could become the crystal nuclei for the crystallization of propylene sequence. With increasing grafted monomer content, the crystallization rate of propylene sequence in grafted EP increased; it might be the result of rapid nucleation rate and crystal growth rate.

The crystal structure and mechanism of the title molecule are described. This crystal is orthorhombic, belonging to space group PC21/B with a=1,002 1(2) nm, b=1.483 0(3) nm, c=2.173 6(4) nm, V=3.230 39(2) nm(3), Z=2, D-c=1.80 g/cm(3), R=0.069 3. The structure was solved by direct method. The tin atom of the title compound exists in two distorted-trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, defined by two carbon, one bromide, one chloride and one oxygen atoms leading to a five-membered chelate ring. In the structure, the five-membered ring containing the intermolecular O-->Sn has a half chair conformation.

The morphologies and mechanical properties of epoxy resins toughened by hydroxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (HTBN) and cured with hexahydrophthalic anhydride were studied, The results show that the level of HTBN in epoxy resin, content of acrylonitrile in HTBN and curing temperature influence the morphology and then influence the mechanical properties of cured epoxy resin.

The contact angles theta of polar liquids on PP-g-AM copolymer (AM content 0.19, 0.26, and 0.37 wt%) were measured. The critical surface tension gamma(c) of PP-g-AM films were evaluated by the Zisman plot (cos theta versus gamma(L)), the Young-Dupre-Good-Girifalco plot (1 + cos theta) versus 1/gamma(L)(0.5), and the log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) plot. The gamma(L) values estimated by the plot log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) were smaller than those obtained by the other plots.

An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) has been functionalized with acrylic acid (AA) by means of a radical-initiated melt process. Different degrees of grafting have been obtained by varying the overall composition of the reaction mixture. The influence of the grafting degree on the structure has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared analysis (FTIR), and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. The results of the structural investigations suggest that the grafting preferentially occurs onto the ethylene sequences of EPM. After acrylic acid was grafted onto EPM, the grafted AA acted as nucleation agent; it caused an increase of crystallization temperature of propylene sequences of EPM-g-AA.

The miscibility of blends of cellulose diacetate (CDA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) was extensively studied by means of differential thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, tensile test, measuring viscosity of diluted and concentrated solutions of blends in acetone-ethanol mixture and morphological observations. A single glass transition temperature is observed, which is intermediate between the glass transition temperatures associated with each component and depends on composition. A synergism in mechanical properties of blends was found. The absolute viscosity and the intrinsic viscosity of solutions of blends are much higher than the weight average values of solutions of CDA and PVP. Optically clear and thermodynamically stable films were formed in the composition range of CDA/PVP = 100/0 to 50/50w/w. Fourier transform infrared was used to investigate the nature of CDA-PVP interaction. Hydrogen bonds were formed between hydroxyl groups of CDA and carbonyl groups of PVP. Heats of solutions of CDA/PVP blends and their mechanical mixtures were measured by using a calorimeter. Mixing enthalpy obtained with Hess's law approach was used to quantify interaction parameters of this blending system. It was found that mixing enthalpies and interaction parameters were negative and composition dependent. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The thermal behaviour and ion-transport properties of a comb polymer electrolyte CP350/LiSCN based on methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains were studied by means of DSC and ac impedance method. The two glass transition temperatures which can be attributed to side chains and main chains respectively were found to increase with increasing salt concentration. Conductivities which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour were analyzed by using Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model derived by Gibbs and coworkers. The optimum ionic conductivity at 25 degrees C achieved was 2.19x10(-5)S/cm.

The modification of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) has been accomplished by melt grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) molecules promoted by radical initiators. The resulting EPM-g-MAH and EPM have been used to obtain binary nylon 1010/EPM or nylon 1010/EPM-g-MAH blends by melt mixing. It was found that the EPM-g-MAH copolymer used as the second component has a profound effect upon the properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to a series of chemical and physicochemical interactions taking place between the two components. The interactions are due to the presence of the anhydride functionality on the copolymer and do not occur when this functionality is absent. The interaction has been confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and scanning electron microscopic.

The crystallization and unusual crystalline morphologies of compatible mixtures of tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymer with tetrahydrofuran homopolymer were studied. It is shown that the PTHF [poly(tetrahydrofuran)] block of the copolymer cocrystalizes with the PTHF homopolymer in the PTHF microphase of the blend. However, the degree of crystallinity of the PTHF block is always lower than that of the PTHF homopolymer in the PTHF microphase. The crystallizability of the PTHF microphase increases appreciably with increasing PTHF microphase size and PTHF homopolymer weight fraction in the microphase. The morphology study of the blends shows that the crystalline morphology is strongly dependent on blend composition, copolymer composition and PTHF block length, as well as crystallization temperature. When alternating PTHF and PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate)] lamellae are formed, the macroscopic crystalline morphology could be only observed when the thickness of the PTHF lamellae is large enough (similar to 20 nm). In the blend where PMMA spherical or cylindrical microphases are formed, the crystalline morphology changes dramatically with the change in the PTHF microdomain size and PMMA interdomain distance. Many unusual crystalline morphologies have been observed. A study of the solution-crystallized morphology of the blends at different temperatures shows that the morphology is also strongly dependent on the isothermal crystallization temperature, suggesting that the PMMA microdomains may have different effects on the morphology formation when the blend is crystallized at different rates.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior and melting process of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) diblock copolymer in which the weight fraction of the PCL block is 0.80 has been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Only the PCL block is crystallizable, the PEO block with 0.20 weight fraction cannot crystallize. The kinetics of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed by Ozawa's equation. The experimental data shows no agreement with Ozawa's theoretical predictions in the whole crystallization process, especially in the later stage. A parameter, kinetic crystallinity, is used to characterize the crystallizability of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer. The amorphous and microphase separating PEO block has a great influence on the crystallization of the PCL block. It bonds chemically with the PCL block, reduces crystallization entropy, and provides nucleating sites for the PCL block crystallization. The existence of the PEO block leads to the occurrence of the two melting peaks of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer during melting process after nonisothermal crystallization. The comparison of nonisothermal crystallization of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer, PCL/PEO blend, and PCL and PEO homopolymers has been made. It showed a lower crystallinity of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of others and a faster crystallization rate of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of the PCL homopolymer, but a slower crystallization rate than that of the PCL/PEO blend.
