Patients who went through a Stroke may require mechanical ventilation (MV) in the acute phase of the disease and, on MV, they may show alterations in the respiratory mechanic. Physiotherapy techniques are applied in patients on MV to improve their respiratory mechanic. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Respiratory Physiotherapy into the dynamic compliance (Cdyn), static compliance (Cst) and airway resistance (Rwa) in Stroke patients on MV. In order to do that, patients with Stroke diagnostic on MV were evaluated, before and after the use of Physiotherapy techniques (manual rib-cage compression, thoracic decompression, zero end expiratory pressure and suctioning). Cdyn, Cst and Rwa were the researched variables. Statistical Analysis was made using Paired T-Test with statistical significance with p-values no greater than 5%. Eleven patients were part of the study, with an average of 64,6±12,5 years old. Cdyn increased after physiotherapy from 29,3±16,1 ml/cmH2O to 33,8±16,7 ml/cmH2O (p=0,03). Cst also increased from 44,4±20,7 ml/cmH2O to 54,0±26,6 ml/cmH2O (p=0,024). No significant difference was detected for Rwa between the before and after moments (Before – 8,0±3,2 cmH2O/l/s, After – 7,3±2,25 cmH2O/l/s; p=0,45). It was possible to conclude that both dynamic and static compliance increased after physiotherapy, but the airway resistance did not increase in patients with stroke on mechanical ventilation.

Examine the effects Global Postural Reeducation, (GPR) in hyperkyphosis and respiratory variables in the elderly was the objective in the research. For this, two elderly participated, one is 62 years old (voluntary 1) and another is 66 years old (voluntary 2), without lung, heart, kidney and/or skeletal-muscle diseases diagnosed. The volunteer have been assessed for Quality of Life (QOL) through the questionnaire SF-36, the degree of toracic kyphosis, the muscular respiratory strength and the thoracic-abdominal mobility. The GRP treatment consisted in eight sessions applied, once one hour each session. After the eight sessions the volunteer were reevaluated. The data concerning assessments before and after treatment were analysed describly. According to the results there was an improvement in the degree of kyphosis in both volunteers, highlighting voluntary 2. Respiratory variables also improvements after treatment. In relation to the Quality of life in most areas there has been an increase in scores indicating improved QOL. These data showed that the GPR has been effective to decrease the level of kyphosis, improves respiratory variables and the quality of life in the elderly treated. However, further work with a greater number of subjects must be carried out to analyze the effectiveness of therapy in the elderly.

Bees have a crucial role in pollination; therefore, it is important to determine the causes of their recent decline. Fipronil and imidacloprid are insecticides used worldwide to eliminate or control insect pests. Because they are broad-spectrum insecticides, they can also affect honeybees. Many researchers have studied the lethal and sublethal effects of these and other insecticides on honeybees, and some of these studies have demonstrated a correlation between the insecticides and colony collapse disorder in bees. The authors investigated the effects of fipronil and imidacloprid on the bioenergetic functioning of mitochondria isolated from the heads and thoraces of Africanized honeybees. Fipronil caused dose-dependent inhibition of adenosine 5'-diphosphate-stimulated (state 3) respiration in mitochondria energized by either pyruvate or succinate, albeit with different potentials, in thoracic mitochondria; inhibition was strongest when respiring with complex I substrate. Fipronil affected adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) production in a dose-dependent manner in both tissues and substrates, though with different sensitivities. Imidacloprid also affected state-3 respiration in both the thorax and head, being more potent in head pyruvate-energized mitochondria; it also inhibited ATP production. Fipronil and imidacloprid had no effect on mitochondrial state-4 respiration. The authors concluded that fipronil and imidacloprid are inhibitors of mitochondrial bioenergetics, resulting in depleted ATP. This action can explain the toxicity of these compounds to honeybees. Several studies have highlighted the importance of the correlation between body size and body weight. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphological structure of New Zealand White rabbits, phenotypically correlating body shape traits with body weight. For this purpose, forty rabbits, weaned at 35 days of age, were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, consisting of two treatments (female and male) with twenty replicates each. At 88 days of age, animals were weighed to determine body weight (B W), and then the following body measures were determined using a measuring tape: ventral perimeter, thoracic perimeter, wither height, croup height, ear length, and body length. Average BW was 2,220 g, and average body measures were 34.4 cm, 28.4 cm, 8.95 cm, 10.4 cm, 10.6 cm, and 36 cm respectively. No significcmt differences between sexes were found relative to the studied traits. There was no negative correlation between body measures and BW, and, except for body length, all measures were significantly correlated with BW, with ear length and ventral perimeter presenting the highest values.

Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms resulting from clonal proliferations of lymphocytes, originated from lymphoid organs, but can develop in any organ by the migration of lymphocytes to the organ's tissue. Lymphoma constitutes one of the most common neoplasms in cats. Imaging techniques like radiology, ultrasound and tomography may help in diagnosing and classifying lymphomas. Our objective is to report the radiographic and tomographic characteristics of a mediastinal lymphoma in a cat, which occupied a large thoracic and abdominal area and infiltrated into the medullary canal causing acute paraparesis. The tomographic exam was essential for identifying the mass, its extension and its location, besides identifying how compromised the adjacent structures were, but the histopathological examination was crucial to diagnose the nature of the lesion.

Anatomical studies of the anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) are scarce and the articles that describe the vertebral column of this species have variations in the number of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. This study had the objective of adding data to the existing literature about the anatomical composition of an anteater's vertebral column using radiographic and tomographic exams. Based on the cadaver of a young female anteater, we observed a total of 7 cervical, 16 thoracic, 3 lumbar and 5 sacral vertebrae, which differed from the cited literature, especially with respect to the thoracic vertebrae. This demonstrates the need for studies with a larger number of individuals in order to standardize possible anatomic variations for the species.

The distal sesamoid bone, also known as navicular bone, is located inside the hoof, palmar (thoracic limbs) or plantar (pelvic limbs) to distal interphalangeal joint. Its extremities are fixed by collateral medial and lateral sesamoidean ligament and distal impar sesamoidean ligament. Navicular disease diagnostic is made through a thorough clinical exam, nerve blocks and imaging exams. Even though imaging exams are not conclusive, they are essential to evaluate the extension of soft tissue lesions. Radiographic projections used to evaluate navicular bone are lateromedial (LM); dorsoproximal-palmaro/plantarodistal oblíqua (D30Pr-PaDiO); dorsoproximal-palmaro/plantarodistal oblíqua (D60Pr-PaDiO) e a palmaro/plantaroproximal-palmaro/plantarodistal oblíqua (PaPr-PaDiO). This exam allows to identify number and shape alterations of synovial invaginations on the distal (foramem nutricio) in the distal margin of distal sesamoid, osteophytes, enthesophytes and periarticular lesions. There are four ultrasonographic accesses described in literature to evaluate podotroclear apparatus, they are: palmar or plantar distal do the pastern, through the heel bulbs, through coronary band and transcuneal. These images allow a beeter the evaluation of soft tissue next to the distal sesamoid, because it is more sensitive than radiographic exam to evaluate acute lesions in soft tissues and perioesteum

It is imortant to be able to evaluate the cardiact size . In 1995, was proposed by Buchanan and Bücheler a new way to measure the dimensions of the cardiac silhouette. This study aims to gather several studies of the cardiac dimensions by VHS method in the right lateral recumbency of of different breeds of dogs in a single work, facilitating the assess to information. Deep chest breeds have a smaller mean VHS value than the barrel chest breeds, showing that there is a variation of the VHS values acoording to the thoracic conformation of each breed, which indicates that there is a need to recognize the specific VHS values according to the breed standard to not to interpret the cardiac measurement in a wrong way through not compatible reference values for the animal. There is the individual variation that should be taken into accont at the time of measurement. The VHS is a helper method to a radiographic evaluation of the heart, and the ultrasonography remains the gold standard for the evaluation of the cardiac chambers and other changes of the heart

INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity and it can be influenced by the use of shoe lifts and lateral inclination in order to correct postural asymmetries. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of the use of the shoe lifts (lower and high) unilateral (right and left) during the movement of lateral inclination (right and left) for an evaluation of the postural angles in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: A control group with ten participants without scoliosis and an experimental group with 10 participants with idiopathic scoliosis of double curves (thoracic right and lumbar to the left). The study analyzed contours of the thoracic region of patients undergoing radiotherapy of breast tumors in Hospital Manuel de Abreu of Bauru (institution 1) and the Hospital da Faculdade de Medicina of Botucatu (Institution 2). Were prepared isodose curves corresponding to the contours of the patient, which were presented for radiotherapists doctors both hospital services that enabled the choice of the curve isodose that provides the best distribution of radiation dose in the irradiated volume. Some boundaries were digitized in one institution and sent for preparation of isodose lines in the institution 2, both curves plotted in each of the institutions and for the same contour, were compared, showing that the methodology of Curves of distance is feasible and reliable, while optimizing the routine procedures regarding the handling of isodose plans provided by different radiation equipment. It compares the calculation of the exposure time determined using the isodose curve selected by calculating the value obtained considering the PDP at the point of the middle line of separation between the internal and external fields, the difference between the two methods for determining exposure time was around 2.4%. A study on the angle of the radiation beam at the input field (region breast-air) was conducted showing that, once known a tangent angle of the input beam, one can estimate the angle of the wedge filter used in some procedures for uniformity of dose within the irradiated volume compensation and the lack of tissue in the treatment volume. A comparative study between the isodose curves produced manually with the curves obtained in a two-dimensional computer system, the computer system showed that provides further information regarding the dose gradient within the irradiated volume, in addition to reducing the time spent in preparing the curves isodose

Plumbism is considered the oldest occupational disease. Among the pathophysiological effects associated with lead (Pb) are cardiovascular disorders. Many diseases that develop later in life are determined during the early stages of life, under the influence of exposure and preferred diet of the mother. Still, one should consider that many environmental contaminants at levels not harmful can determine pathophysiological processes if physical or chemical stressors and/or pathological conditions are present. In this context, the intrauterine malnutrition may represent an additional risk factor in exposure to Pb during pregnancy and lactation. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular risk of weaned rats that have suffered perinatal exposure to Pb and intrauterine malnutrition, alone or in combination. After mating, female rats were divided into control (ctrl, ad libitum), food restriction (RA, the same diet 50% of consumption in the control group during pregnancy), exposed to Pb (500 ppm Pb in drinking water during pregnancy and lactation) and association (As, received the last two procedures in combination). Cumulative concentration-effect curves (CECs) to CaCl2 and noradrenaline (NA) were obtained in rings with and without endothelium of the same thoracic aorta from male weaned rats (23-25 days old). Maternal weight, litter weight, weight and number of pups at birth, anogenital distance, arterial blood pressure (ABP) and weight of tissues (kidney, liver, aorta, left ventricle) were evaluated. Changes in vascular reactivity were assessed by the maximum response (MR) and 50% effective concentration (EC50). Data were presented as mean ± SEM.
