The vibrational spectra of palladium phthalocyanine (PdPc) evaporated thin solid films are reported, including the resonance Raman scattering, surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and SERRS mapping of the film surface using micro-Raman spectroscopy with 633 nm laser radiation. SERRS of PdPc was obtained by evaporating an overlayer of Ag nanoparticles on to the PdPc film on glass. The SERRS enhancement factor is estimated as similar to10(4) with reference to PdPc evaporated films on glass. The molecular organization of the PdPc evaporated films was probed using transmission and reflection-absorption infrared spectra. It was established that a random molecular distribution found in PdPc evaporated films is independent of temperature. No evidence of thermal degradation due to thermal annealing was found in the films. Electronic absorption and emission spectra are also discussed. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

We performed temperature-dependent Raman scattering studies on K0.2Na0.8NbO3 ceramics and compared the results with those for NaNbO3. The wavenumbers associated with NbO6 vibrations suggest the existence of two phase transitions, as occurs with pure NaNbO3 ceramics. Although the disorder on the Na/K site does not change either the room temperature phase of K0.2Na0.8NbO3 or the sequence of phase transitions compared with NaNbO3, it changes the temperature of the lowest phase transition and strongly modifies the temperature of the antiferroelectric --> new phase II phase transition. Additionally, the linewidth analysis shows that the orientational mechanism is the dominant contribution to linewidth, although the anharmonic contribution is increased, when compared with NaNbO3, owing to the random distribution of potassium in the sodium niobate matrix. This paper describes a simple method to co-precipitate CeO2 and Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9-delta with ammonium hydroxide from solvents such as: water, ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. Characterization by Raman spectroscopy and XRD evidenced the formation of a solid solution of gadolinium-doped ceria at room temperature. Nanometric particles with crystallite size of 3.1 nm were obtained during synthesis using ethyl alcohol as solvent. This is a promising result compared with those mentioned in the literature, in which the smallest crystallite size reported was, 6.5 nm. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cubic GaN layers are grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) GaAs substrates. Optical micrographs of the GaN epilayers intentionally grown at Ga excess reveal the existence of surface irregularities such as bright rectangular structures, dark dots surrounded by rectangles and dark dots without rectangles. Micro-Raman spectroscopy is used to study the structural properties of these inclusions and of the epilayers in greater detail. We conclude that the observed irregularities are the result of a melting process due to the existence of a liquid Ga phase on the growing surface.

Seselin, C14H12O3, is a coumarin which crystallizes in a monoclinic structure P2(1)/b(C-2h(5)) with four molecules per unit cell. In a Fourier-transform Raman spectroscopic study performed at room temperature, several normal modes were observed. Vibrational wavenumber and wave vector calculations using density functional theory were compared with experiment, which allowed the assignment of a number of normal modes of the crystal. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra were recorded between 10 and 300 K. No anomalies were observed in the phonon spectra, indicating that the monoclinic structure remains stable. The surface modifications induced on Teflon FEP and Mylar C polymer films by a low energy electron beam are probed using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The electron beam, which does not affect the Mylar C, surface, may break the copolymer chain into its monomers degrading the Teflon FEP surface. For Mylar C the electron beam decreases the roughness of the polymer surface. This difference in behavior may explain recent results in which the surface modifications investigated by measuring the second crossover energy shift in the electronic emission curve differed for the two polymers (Chinaglia et al [1]). In addition, the Raman data showed no evidence of carbon formation for either polymer samples, which is explained by the fact that only a low energy electron beam is used.

Films containing different volumes of latex of natural rubber (NR) in a fixed mass of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) powder were fabricated by compressing under annealing a mixture of both materials without using any solvent. This is an important issue keeping in mind that these films have to be used in the future as biomaterials in different applications once the solvents that are used to dissolve the PVDF become toxic to human. The films with different percentage of latex in PVDF were characterized using microRaman scattering and Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopies, thermomechanical techniques using thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical-mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the latex of NR and PVDF do not interact chemically, leading to the formation of a polymeric blend with high thermal stability and mechanical properties suitable for applications involving bone (prostheses, for instance). Besides, the results recorded using the micro-Raman technique revealed that for a fixed amount of PVDF the higher the amount of latex in the blend, the better the miscibility between both materials. SiO2 (1-x) - TiO2 (x) waveguides, with the mole fraction x in the range 0.07 - 0.20 and thickness of about 0.4 μm, were deposited on silica substrates by a dip-coating technique. The thermal treatments at 700-900°C, used to fully densify the xerogels, produce nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals even for the lowest TiO2 content. The nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals and their growth by thermal annealing up to 1300°C were studied by waveguide Raman spectroscopy, for the SiO2 (0.8) - TiO2 (0.2) composition. By increasing the annealing temperature, the Raman spectrum evolves from that typical of the silica-titania glass to that of anatase, but brookite phase is dominant at intermediate temperatures. In the low. frequency region (5-50 cm-1) of the Raman spectra, acoustic vibrations of the nanocrystals are observed. From the measured line shapes, we can deduce the size distribution of the particles. The results are compared with those obtained from the line widths in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Nanocrystals with a mean size in the range 4-20 nm are obtained, by thermal annealing in a corresponding range of 800-1300°C.

The combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopies or with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) has been recently carried out on the D44 beamline of DCI-LURE. The different set-ups used to perform such combinations are described and examples of combined investigations belonging to different field of materials science (coordination chemistry, sol-gel and catalysis) are presented. © Physica Scripta 2005.

Characterization by micro-Raman spectroscopy of polymeric materials used as nuclear track detectors reveals physico-chemical and morphological information on the material's molecular structure. In this work, the nuclear track detector poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), or Columbia Resin 39 (CR-39), was characterized according to the fluence of alpha particles produced by a 226Ra source and chemical etching time. Therefore, damage of the CR-39 chemical structure due to the alpha-particle interaction with the detector was analyzed at the molecular level. It was observed that the ionization and molecular excitation of the CR-39 after the irradiation process entail cleavage of chemical bonds and formation of latent track. In addition, after the chemical etching, there is also loss of polymer structure, leading to the decrease of the group density C-O-C (∼888 cm-1), CH=CH (∼960 cm -1), C-O (∼1110 cm-1), C-O-C (∼1240 cm -1), C-O (∼1290 cm-1), C-O (∼1741 cm -1), -CH2- (∼2910 cm-1), and the main band -CH2- (∼2950 cm-1). The analyses performed after irradiation and chemical etching led to a better understanding of the CR-39 molecular structure and better comprehension of the process of the formation of the track, which is related to chemical etching kinetics. This paper reports on the structural characterization of Pb 1-xLaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PLZT) ferroelectric ceramic compositions prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectroscopy were used to probe the local structure of PLZT samples that exhibits a normal and relaxor ferroelectric behavior. From the Zr K-edge and Pb LIII-edge EXAFS spectra, a considerable dissymmetry of Zr and Pb sites was observed in all samples, including those showing a long-range order cubic symmetry and a relaxor behavior. The Raman spectroscopy results confirmed the existence of a local disorder in all PLZT samples through the observation of Raman active vibrational modes. The variation in the intensity of the E(TO 3) mode in the PLZT relaxor samples indicates that the process of correlation between nanodomains stabilizes at temperatures lower than T m. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
