Despite the resistance developed by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) strains, isoniazid (INK) has been recognized as one of the best drug for treatment of Tuberculosis (Tb). The coordination of INH to ruthenium metal centers was investigated as a strategy to enhance the activity of this drug against the sensitive and resistant strains of MTb. The complexes trans-[Ru(NH3)(4)(L)(INH)](2+) (L = SO2 or NH3) were isolated and their chemical and antituberculosis properties studied. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) data show that [Ru(NH3)(5)(INH)](2+) was active in both resistant and sensitive strains, whereas free INK (non-coordinated) showed to be active only against the sensitive strain. The coordination of INH to the metal center in both [Ru(NH3)(5)(INH)](2+) and trans-[Ru(NH3)(4)(SO2)(INH)](2+) complexes led to a shift in the INH oxidation potential to less positive values compared to free INH. Despite, the ease of oxidation of INH did not lead to an increase in the in vitro INH activity against MTb, it might have provided sensitivity toward resistant strains. Furthermore, ruthenium complexes with chemical structures analogous to those described above were synthesized using the oxidation products of INK as ligands (namely, isonicotinic acid and isonicotinamide). These last compounds were not active against any strains of MTb. Moreover, according to DFT calculations the formation of the acyl radical, a proposed intermediate in the INH oxidation, is favored in the [Ru(NH3)(5)(INH)](2+) complex by 50.7 kcal mol(-1) with respect to the free INH. This result suggests that the stabilization of the acyl radical promoted by the metal center would be a more important feature than the oxidation potential of the INH for the antituberculosis activity against resistant strains. Fuel cells powered directly with ethanol (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell-DEFC) are very attractive for the possibility of using a renewable fuel in the generation of clean energy. However, it is still necessary to deepen the understanding of catalytic processes and their dependence on the catalytic properties. This work proposes to study the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in an alkaline medium of Pd nanoparticles supported in carbon oxide hybrids using various transition metal oxides (MoO3, TiO2, WO3 and ZrO2). The materials prepared were characterized by techniques such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) to verify the structure, the distribution of particles in the supports and the presence of Pd on particles oxide. Experiments of X-rays absorption spectroscopy were carried out using soft X-rays (SXS) to evaluate the changes in the electronic properties of the Pd particles caused by interactions with different oxides. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry and potential sweeps of adsorbed CO oxidation allowed evaluating general aspects of the catalysts' electrochemical behavior and determining the electrochemically active area thereof. The catalytic performances of ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium were evaluated by electrochemical techniques (potential scan and chronoamperometry), and showed an improvement in activity with the addition of oxides in material containing only carbon, which was most pronounced for the catalyst containing TiO2. This improvement was predominantly associated with the electronic effects caused by the interaction of Pd on the support, causing a vacancy in the 4d band of Pd which, in turn, produces variations in adsorption energies of the species...

Dispersion of photoluminescent rare earth metal complexes in polymer matrices is of great interest due to the possibility of avoiding the saturation of the photoluminescent signal. The possibility of using a natural ionic conducting polymer matrix was investigated in this study. Samples of agar-based electrolytes containing europium picrate were prepared and characterized by physical and chemical analyses. The FTIR spectra indicated strong interaction of agar O-H and 3.6-anhydro-galactose C-O groups with glycerol and europium picrate. The DSC analyses revealed no glass transition temperature of the samples in the -60 to 250 degrees C range. From the thermogravimetry (TG), a thermal stability of the samples of up to 180 degrees C was stated. The membranes were subjected to ionic conductivity measurement, which provided the values of 2.6 x 10(-6) S/cm for the samples with acetic acid and 1.6 x 10(-5) S/cm for the samples without acetic acid. Moreover, the temperature-dependent ionic conductivity measurements revealed both Arrhenius and VTF models of the conductivity depending on the sample. Surface visualization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated good uniformity. The samples were also applied in small electrochromic devices and showed good electrochemical stability. The present work confirmed that these materials may perform as satisfactory multifunctional component layers in the field of electrochemical devices. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, characterization, DFT simulation and biological assays of two new metal complexes of 2-(2-thienyl)benzothiazole - BTT are reported. The complexes [Ag(BTT)(2)NO3] - AgBTT2 and [Au(BTT)Cl]center dot 1/2H(2)O - AuBTT were obtained by mixing the ligand with silver (I) nitrate or gold(I) chloride in methanolic solution. Characterization of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H, N and S), thermal (TG-DTA) analysis, C-13 and H-1 NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements, as well as the X-ray structure determination for AgBTT2. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations were in agreement with the experimental data for both complexes. The ligand BTT was synthesized by the condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminothiophenol in a microwave furnace. AgBTT2 has a monomeric structure. Both complexes show a good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Free BIT shows low antitubercular activity. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The mixed ruthenium(II) complexes trans-[RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)(bipy)] (1), trans-[RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)(Me(2)bipy)](2), cis-[RuCl(2)(dcype)(bipy)](3), cis-[RuCl(2)(dcype)(Me(2)bipy)](4) (PPh(3) = triphenylphosphine, dcype = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Me(2)bipy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) were used as precursors to synthesize the associated vinylidene complexes. The complexes [RuCl(=C=CHPh)(PPh(3))(2)(bipy)]PF(6) (5), [RuCl(=C=CHPh)(PPh(3))(2)(Me(2)bipy)]PF(6) (6), [RuCl(=C=CHPh)(dcype)(bipy)]PF(6) (7), [RuCl(=C=CHPh)(dcype)(bipy)]PF(6) (8) were characterized and their spectral, electrochemical, photochemical and photophysical properties were examined. The emission assigned to the pi-pi* excited state from the vinylidene ligand is irradiation wavelength (340, 400, 430 nm) and solvent (CH(2)Cl(2), CH(3)CN, EtOH/MeOH) dependent. The cyclic voltammograms of (6) and (7) show a reversible metal oxidation peak and two successive ligand reductions in the +1.5-(-0.64) V range. The reduction of the vinylidene leads to the formation of the acetylide complex, but due the hydrogen abstraction the process is irreversible. The studies described here suggest that for practical applications such as functional materials, nonlinear optics, building blocks and supramolecular photochemistry. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Na[AuCl4].2H(2)O reacts with tridentate thiosemicarbazide ligands, H(2)L1, derived from N-[N',N'-dialkylamino(thiocarbonyl)]benzimidoyl chloride and thiosemicarbazides under formation of air-stable, green [AuCl(L1)] complexes. The organic ligands coordinate in a planar SNS coordination mode. Small amounts of gold(I) complexes of the composition [AuCl(L3)] are formed as side-products, where L3 is an S-bonded 5-diethylamino-3-phenyl-1-thiocarbamoyl-1,2,4-triazole. The formation of the triazole L3 can be explained by the oxidation of H(2)L1 to an intermediate thiatriazine L2 by Au3+, followed by a desulfurization reaction with ring contraction. The chloro ligands in the [AuCl(L1)] complexes can readily be replaced by other monoanionic ligands such as SCN- or CN- giving [Au(SCN)(L1)] or [Au(CN)(L1)] complexes. The complexes described in this paper represent the first examples of fully characterized neutral Gold(III) thiosemicarbazone complexes. All the [AuCl(L1)] compounds present a remarkable cell growth inhibition against human MCF-7 breast cancer cells. However, systematic variation of the alkyl groups in the N(4)-position of the thiosemicarbazone building blocks as well as the replacement of the chloride by thiocyanate ligands do not considerably influence the biological activity. On the other hand, the reduction of Au-III to Au-I leads to a considerable decrease of the cytotoxicity.

Samples of 40SiO(2)center dot 30Na(2)O center dot 1Al(2)O(3)center dot(29 - x)B2O3 center dot xFe(2)O(3) (mol%), with 0.0 <= x <= 17.5, were prepared by the fusion method and investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optical absorption (OA) and Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). The EPR spectra of the as-synthesized samples exhibit two well-defined EPR signals around g = 4.27 and g = 2.01 and a visible EPR shoulder around g = 6.4, assigned to isolated Fe3+ ion complexes (g = 4.27 and g = 6.4) and Fe3+-based clusters (g = 2.01). Analyses of both EPR line intensity and line width support the model picture of Fe3+-based clusters built in from two sources of isolated ions, namely Fe2+ and Fe3+; the ferrous ion being used to build in iron-based clusters at lower x-content (below about x = 2.5%) whereas the ferric ion is used to build in iron-based clusters at higher x-content (above about x = 2.5%). The presence of Fe2+ ions incorporated within the glass template is supported by OA data with a strong band around 1100 nm due to the spin-allowed E-5(g)-T-5(2g) transition in an octahedral coordination with oxygen. Additionally, Mossbauer data (isomer shift and quadrupole splitting) confirm incorporation of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions within the template, more likely in tetrahedral-like environments. We hypothesize that ferrous ions are incorporated within the glass template as FeO4 complex resulting from replacing silicon in non-bridging oxygen (SiO3O-) sites whereas ferric ions are incorporated as FeO4 complex resulting from replacing silicon in bridging-like oxygen silicate groups (SiO4). Two novel dinuclear complexes involving the antihypertensive drug valsartan and copper(II) ion have been prepared in water and DMSO. The complex compositions were determined as: [Cu(vals)(H(2)O)(3)](2)center dot 6H(2)O and [Cu(vals)(H(2)O)(2)DMSO](2)center dot 2H(2)O. They were thoroughly characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, spectrophotometric titrations and UV-visible, diffuse reflectance, FTIR, Raman and EPR spectroscopies. No effect of the ligand on two tested osteoblastic cell lines in culture (one normal MOT3E1 and one tumoral UMR106) was observed in concentrations up to 100 mu M. Higher concentrations of Valsartan are required to induce cytotoxicity in both cell lines. The antiproliferative effect of the tested complex ([Cu(vals) (H(2)O)(3)](2)center dot 6H(2)O) in a dose-response manner, was higher in the UMR106 osteoblastic cell line than that of the MC3T3E1 normal line at concentrations >= 100 mu M. Morphological alterations are in accordance with proliferative observations. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The thesis reports the synthesis, and the chemical, structural and spectroscopic characterization of a series of new Rhodium and Au-Fe carbonyl clusters. Most new high-nuclearity rhodium carbonyl clusters have been obtained by redox condensation of preformed rhodium clusters reacting with a species in a different oxidation state generated in situ by mild oxidation. In particular the starting Rh carbonyl clusters is represented by the readily available [Rh7(CO)16]3- 9 compound. The oxidized species is generated in situ by reaction of the above with a stoichiometric defect of a mild oxidizing agents such as [M(H2O)x]n+ aquo complexes possessing different pKa’s and Mn+/M potentials. The experimental results are roughly in keeping with the conclusion that aquo complexes featuring E°(Mn+/M) < ca. -0.20 V do not lead to the formation of hetero-metallic Rh clusters, probably because of the inadequacy of their redox potentials relative to that of the [Rh7(CO)16]3-/2- redox couple. Only homometallic cluster s such as have been fairly selectively obtained. As a fallout of the above investigations, also a convenient and reproducible synthesis of the ill-characterized species [HnRh22(CO)35]8-n has been discovered. The ready availability of the above compound triggered both its complete spectroscopic and chemical characterization. because it is the only example of Rhodium carbonyl clusters with two interstitial metal atoms. The presence of several hydride atoms, firstly suggested by chemical evidences, has been implemented by ESI-MS and 1H-NMR, as well as new structural characterization of its tetra- and penta-anion. All these species display redox behaviour and behave as molecular capacitors. Their chemical reactivity with CO gives rise to a new series of Rh22 clusters containing a different number of carbonyl groups, which have been likewise fully characterized. Formation of hetero-metallic Rh clusters was only observed when using SnCl2H2O as oxidizing agent because. Quite all the Rh-Sn carbonyl clusters obtained have icosahedral geometry. The only previously reported example of an icosahedral Rh cluster with an interstitial atom is the [Rh12Sb(CO)27]3- trianion. They have very similar metal framework, as well as the same number of CO ligands and, consequently, cluster valence electrons (CVEs). .A first interesting aspect of the chemistry of the Rh-Sn system is that it also provides icosahedral clusters making exception to the cluster-borane analogy by showing electron counts from 166 to 171. As a result, the most electron-short species, namely [Rh12Sn(CO)25]4- displays redox propensity, even if disfavoured by the relatively high free negative charge of the starting anion and, moreover, behaves as a chloride scavenger. The presence of these bulky interstitial atoms results in the metal framework adopting structures different from a close-packed metal lattice and, above all, imparts a notable stability to the resulting cluster. An organometallic approach to a new kind of molecular ligand-stabilized gold nanoparticles, in which Fe(CO)x (x = 3,4) moieties protect and stabilize the gold kernel has also been undertaken. As a result, the new clusters [Au21{Fe(CO)4}10]5-, [Au22{Fe(CO)4}12]6-, Au28{Fe(CO)3}4{Fe(CO)4}10]8- and [Au34{Fe(CO)3}6{Fe(CO)4}8]6- have been isolated and characterized. As suggested by concepts of isolobal analogies, the Fe(CO)4 molecular fragment may display the same ligand capability of thiolates and go beyond. Indeed, the above clusters bring structural resemblance to the structurally characterized gold thiolates by showing Fe-Au-Fe, rather than S-Au-S, staple motives. Staple motives, the oxidation state of surface gold atoms and the energy of Au atomic orbitals are likely to concur in delaying the insulator-to-metal transition as the nuclearity of gold thiolates increases, relative to the more compact transition-metal carbonyl clusters. Finally, a few previously reported Au-Fe carbonyl clusters have been used as precursors in the preparation of supported gold catalysts. The catalysts obtained are active for toluene oxidation and the catalytic activity depends on the Fe/Au cluster loading over TiO2.

Here, we present the adaptation and optimization of (i) the solvothermal and (ii) the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) approach as simple methods for the high-yield synthesis of MQ2 (M=Mo, W, Zr; Q = O, S) nanoparticles. Extensive characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron micros¬copy (SEM/TEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA), Raman spectroscopy, thermal analyses (DTA/TG), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and BET measurements. After a general introduction to the state of the art, a simple route to nanostructured MoS2 based on the decomposition of the cluster-based precursor (NH4)2Mo3S13∙xH2O under solvothermal conditions (toluene, 653 K) is presented. Solvothermal decomposition results in nanostructured material that is distinct from the material obtained by decomposition of the same precursor in sealed quartz tubes at the same temperature. When carried out in the presence of the surfactant cetyltrimethyl¬ammonium bromide (CTAB), the decomposition product exhibits highly disordered MoS2 lamellae with high surface areas. The synthesis of WS2 onion-like nanoparticles by means of a single-step MOCVD process is discussed. Furthermore, the results of the successful transfer of the two-step MO¬CVD based synthesis of MoQ2 nanoparticles (Q = S, Se), comprising the formation of amorphous precursor particles and followed by the formation of fullerene-like particles in a subsequent annealing step to the W-S system, are presented. Based on a study of the temperature dependence of the reactions a set of conditions for the formation of onion-like structures in a one-step reaction could be derived. The MOCVD approach allows a selective synthesis of open and filled fullerene-like chalcogenide nanoparticles. An in situ heating stage transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study was employed to comparatively investigate the growth mechanism of MoS2 and WS2 nanoparticles obtained from MOCVD upon annealing. Round, mainly amorphous particles in the pristine sample trans¬form to hollow onion-like particles upon annealing. A significant difference between both compounds could be demonstrated in their crystallization conduct. Finally, the results of the in situ hea¬ting experiments are compared to those obtained from an ex situ annealing process under Ar. Eventually, a low temperature synthesis of monodisperse ZrO2 nanoparticles with diameters of ~ 8 nm is introduced. Whereas the solvent could be omitted, the synthesis in an autoclave is crucial for gaining nano-sized (n) ZrO2 by thermal decomposition of Zr(C2O4)2. The n-ZrO2 particles exhibits high specific surface areas (up to 385 m2/g) which make them promising candidates as catalysts and catalyst supports. Co-existence of m- and t-ZrO2 nano-particles of 6-9 nm in diameter, i.e. above the critical particle size of 6 nm, demonstrates that the particle size is not the only factor for stabilization of the t-ZrO2 modification at room temperature. In conclusion, synthesis within an autoclave (with and without solvent) and the MOCVD process could be successfully adapted to the synthesis of MoS2, WS2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles. A comparative in situ heating stage TEM study elucidated the growth mechanism of MoS2 and WS2 fullerene-like particles. As the general processes are similar, a transfer of this synthesis approach to other layered transition metal chalcogenide systems is to be expected. Application of the obtained nanomaterials as lubricants (MoS2, WS2) or as dental filling materials (ZrO2) is currently under investigation.

Recent studies on the use of bio-conjugating organometallic probes report on the possibility to use biotinylated-derivatives to selectively coordinate to a specific protein, avidin. In the present thesis, the synthesis of four new bifunctional ligands is described. The ligands contain both a pyridine triazolic unit able to coordinate a transition metal, and a biotin fragment able to bond avidin: the two functionalities are linked together by an appropriate aromatic linker (amide or ester). The obtained ligands were then employed to form luminescent Ir(III) complexes, that have been fully characterized also by a photophysical point of view both in organic and in aqueous solvent. Therefore, titrations of solutions of avidin with aqueous solutions of Ir(III)-complexes have been performed in order to estimate the luminescence variations of the complexes in the presence or in the absence of bio-conjugation.

Topic of this thesis is the development of experiments behind the gas-filled separator TASCA(TransActinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus) to study the chemical properties of the transactinide elements.rnIn the first part of the thesis, the electrodepositions of short-lived isotopes of ruthenium and osmium on gold electrodes were studied as model experiments for hassium. From literature it is known that the deposition potential of single atoms differs significantly from the potential predicted by the Nernst equation. This shift of the potential depends on the adsorption enthalpy of therndeposited element on the electrode material. If the adsorption on the electrode-material is favoured over the adsorption on a surface made of the same element as the deposited atom, the electrode potential is shifted to higher potentials. This phenomenon is called underpotential deposition.rnPossibilities to automatize an electro chemistry experiment behind the gas-filled separator were explored for later studies with transactinide elements.rnThe second part of this thesis is about the in-situ synthesis of transition-metal-carbonyl complexes with nuclear reaction products. Fission products of uranium-235 and californium-249 were produced at the TRIGA Mainz reactor and thermalized in a carbon-monoxide containing atmosphere. The formed volatile metal-carbonyl complexes could be transported in a gas-stream.rnFurthermore, short-lived isotopes of tungsten, rhenium, osmium, and iridium were synthesised at the linear accelerator UNILAC at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The recoiling fusion products were separated from the primary beam and the transfer products in the gas-filled separator TASCA. The fusion products were stopped in the focal plane of TASCA in a recoil transfer chamber. This chamber contained a carbon-monoxide – helium gas mixture. The formed metal-carbonyl complexes could be transported in a gas stream to various experimental setups. All synthesised carbonyl complexes were identified by nuclear decay spectroscopy. Some complexes were studied with isothermal chromatography or thermochromatography methods. The chromatograms were compared with Monte Carlo Simulations to determine the adsorption enthalpyrnon silicon dioxide and on gold. These simulations based on existing codes, that were modified for the different geometries of the chromatography channels. All observed adsorption enthalpies (on silcon oxide as well as on gold) are typical for physisorption. Additionally, the thermalstability of some of the carbonyl complexes was studied. This showed that at temperatures above 200 °C therncomplexes start to decompose.rnIt was demonstrated that carbonyl-complex chemistry is a suitable method to study rutherfordium, dubnium, seaborgium, bohrium, hassium, and meitnerium. Until now, only very simple, thermally stable compounds have been synthesized in the gas-phase chemistry of the transactindes. With the synthesis of transactinide-carbonyl complexes a new compound class would be discovered. Transactinide chemistry would reach the border between inorganic and metallorganic chemistry.rnFurthermore, the in-situ synthesised carbonyl complexes would allow nuclear spectroscopy studies under low background conditions making use of chemically prepared samples.
