The official cooperation between the Hungarian and the Belarusian geography began to be outlined in a sunny afternoon of June 2010 in the Minsk building of the Geographic Faculty of the Belarusian State University, four years ago. Then we reviewed the potential frames of cooperation with Professor Ekaterina Antipova. It was supported by the academican Károly Kocsis, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, director of the Geographical Research Institute, and we could also win the support of the dean Ivan Pirozhnik and the academician Vladimir Loginov from the Belarusian State University and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, respectively. This informal cooperation became official in the autumn of 2010 in the frame of the Academic Mobility Agreement Project between the Hungarian and the Belarusian academies of sciences. Since then several publications have appeared about Hungary and Belarus in the geographic journals of both countries, however, this is the first, long awaited, significant common publication. Besides the project-based co-operations like e. g. the EastMig (www.eastmig.mtafki.hu) and the ReSEP-CEE (www.mtafki.hu/ReSEP_CEE_Be.html) supported by the Visegrad Fund, a vivid student exchange program was also launched from the autumn of 2010 between the Geographic Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Geographic Faculty of the Belarusian State University with the scholarship program of the Visegrad Fund. Later the Department of Economic Geography of the Corvinus University of Budapest, headed by István Tózsa became also an active partner of the cooperation. The publishing expenses of this book are also fully financed by the Department of Economic Geography.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is a system where a digital television service is delivered by using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure. There is considerable confusion and concern about the IPTV, since two different technologies have to be mended together to provide the end customers with some thing better than the conventional television. In this research, functional architecture of the IPTV system was investigated. Very Large Scale Integration based system for streaming server controller were designed and different ways of hosting a web server which can be used to send the control signals to the streaming server controller were studied. The web server accepts inputs from the keyboard and FPGA board switches and depending on the preset configuration the server will open a selected web page and also sends the control signals to the streaming server controller. It was observed that the applications run faster on PowerPC since it is embedded into the FPGA. Commercial market and Global deployment of IPTV were discussed.

In recent years, wireless communication infrastructures have been widely deployed for both personal and business applications. IEEE 802.11 series Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) standards attract lots of attention due to their low cost and high data rate. Wireless ad hoc networks which use IEEE 802.11 standards are one of hot spots of recent network research. Designing appropriate Media Access Control (MAC) layer protocols is one of the key issues for wireless ad hoc networks. ^ Existing wireless applications typically use omni-directional antennas. When using an omni-directional antenna, the gain of the antenna in all directions is the same. Due to the nature of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) mechanism of IEEE 802.11 standards, only one of the one-hop neighbors can send data at one time. Nodes other than the sender and the receiver must be either in idle or listening state, otherwise collisions could occur. The downside of the omni-directionality of antennas is that the spatial reuse ratio is low and the capacity of the network is considerably limited. ^ It is therefore obvious that the directional antenna has been introduced to improve spatial reutilization. As we know, a directional antenna has the following benefits. It can improve transport capacity by decreasing interference of a directional main lobe. It can increase coverage range due to a higher SINR (Signal Interference to Noise Ratio), i.e., with the same power consumption, better connectivity can be achieved. And the usage of power can be reduced, i.e., for the same coverage, a transmitter can reduce its power consumption. ^ To utilizing the advantages of directional antennas, we propose a relay-enabled MAC protocol. Two relay nodes are chosen to forward data when the channel condition of direct link from the sender to the receiver is poor. The two relay nodes can transfer data at the same time and a pipelined data transmission can be achieved by using directional antennas. The throughput can be improved significant when introducing the relay-enabled MAC protocol. ^ Besides the strong points, directional antennas also have some explicit drawbacks, such as the hidden terminal and deafness problems and the requirements of retaining location information for each node. Therefore, an omni-directional antenna should be used in some situations. The combination use of omni-directional and directional antennas leads to the problem of configuring heterogeneous antennas, i e., given a network topology and a traffic pattern, we need to find a tradeoff between using omni-directional and using directional antennas to obtain a better network performance over this configuration. ^ Directly and mathematically establishing the relationship between the network performance and the antenna configurations is extremely difficult, if not intractable. Therefore, in this research, we proposed several clustering-based methods to obtain approximate solutions for heterogeneous antennas configuration problem, which can improve network performance significantly. ^ Our proposed methods consist of two steps. The first step (i.e., clustering links) is to cluster the links into different groups based on the matrix-based system model. After being clustered, the links in the same group have similar neighborhood nodes and will use the same type of antenna. The second step (i.e., labeling links) is to decide the type of antenna for each group. For heterogeneous antennas, some groups of links will use directional antenna and others will adopt omni-directional antenna. Experiments are conducted to compare the proposed methods with existing methods. Experimental results demonstrate that our clustering-based methods can improve the network performance significantly. ^

Financial innovations have emerged globally to close the gap between the rising global demand for infrastructures and the availability of financing sources offered by traditional financing mechanisms such as fuel taxation, tax-exempt bonds, and federal and state funds. The key to sustainable innovative financing mechanisms is effective policymaking. This paper discusses the theoretical framework of a research study whose objective is to structurally and systemically assess financial innovations in global infrastructures. The research aims to create analysis frameworks, taxonomies and constructs, and simulation models pertaining to the dynamics of the innovation process to be used in policy analysis. Structural assessment of innovative financing focuses on the typologies and loci of innovations and evaluates the performance of different types of innovative financing mechanisms. Systemic analysis of innovative financing explores the determinants of the innovation process using the System of Innovation approach. The final deliverables of the research include propositions pertaining to the constituents of System of Innovation for infrastructure finance which include the players, institutions, activities, and networks. These static constructs are used to develop a hybrid Agent-Based/System Dynamics simulation model to derive propositions regarding the emergent dynamics of the system. The initial outcomes of the research study are presented in this paper and include: (a) an archetype for mapping innovative financing mechanisms, (b) a System of Systems-based analysis framework to identify the dimensions of Systems of Innovation analyses, and (c) initial observations regarding the players, institutions, activities, and networks of the System of Innovation in the context of the U.S. transportation infrastructure financing.

This research aims to investigate the use of Project based learning as a method for teaching music in Elementary Schools located in Natal, RN. Its main objective is to analyze how this method is used during the classes of music at school context and which are its implications to the process of music learning acquirement. The specific objectives comprise: gathering the music teachers in preschool that work with project based learning as a method for their classes; identifying how the theory meets their practice; and analyzing how project based learning contributes to the learning process of music within schools. The main scholars adopted as theoretical reference were Boutinet (2002), Hernández (1998; 200), Antunes (2001), Cavalcante (2009), from Education area; and Penna (2008), Fonterrada (2008), Queiroz (2012), regarding Musical Education. Such choice was made in views of identifying the relationship and how project based pedagogy associates to the current Brazil school curriculum. For data collection, mixed methodological strategies were used, of qualitative and quantitative approaches that are complementary for better meeting the research needs. By applying a questionnaire, it was sought to identify the music schools and teachers who reported working with project based learning. Based on these results were selected two schools, one private school and one public school to perform a participant observation in two groups following the development of music classes based on project based learning, and the information were recorded in a diary of audio and video recordings. The results of this work show that the Project Education is a methodology frequently used by music teachers from Natal/ RN contributing to the integration of content and subjects and engages students in activities awakening interest and contributing to the development of music education at school. However, it was identified that many of the conceptions of the teachers about projects are confused by ambiguities from the use of the term in different areas and in various theoretical perspectives as well as the lack of publications that address the music education through the project based learning. It is hoped that this study provides discussions and research about the project based learning applied to music education in elementary school.

The ability to capture human motion allows researchers to evaluate an individual’s gait. Gait can be measured in different ways, from camera-based systems to Magnetic and Inertial Measurement Units (MIMU). The former uses cameras to track positional information of photo-reflective markers, while the latter uses accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers to measure segment orientation. Both systems can be used to measure joint kinematics, but the results vary because of their differences in anatomical calibrations. The objective of this thesis was to study potential solutions for reducing joint angle discrepancies between MIMU and camera-based systems. The first study worked to correct the anatomical frame differences between MIMU and camera-based systems via the joint angles of both systems. This study looked at full lower body correction versus correcting a single joint. Single joint correction showed slightly better alignment of both systems, but does not take into account that body segments are generally affected by more than one joint. The second study explores the possibility of anatomical landmarking using a single camera and a pointer apparatus. Results showed anatomical landmark position could be determined using a single camera, as the anatomical landmarks found from this study and a camera-based system showed similar results. This thesis worked on providing a novel way for obtaining anatomical landmarks with a single point-and-shoot camera, as well aligning anatomical frames between MIMUs and camera-based systems using joint angles.

One of the global phenomena with threats to environmental health and safety is artisanal mining. There are ambiguities in the manner in which an ore-processing facility operates which hinders the mining capacity of these miners in Ghana. These problems are reviewed on the basis of current socio-economic, health and safety, environmental, and use of rudimentary technologies which limits fair-trade deals to miners. This research sought to use an established data-driven, geographic information (GIS)-based system employing the spatial analysis approach for locating a centralized processing facility within the Wassa Amenfi-Prestea Mining Area (WAPMA) in the Western region of Ghana. A spatial analysis technique that utilizes ModelBuilder within the ArcGIS geoprocessing environment through suitability modeling will systematically and simultaneously analyze a geographical dataset of selected criteria. The spatial overlay analysis methodology and the multi-criteria decision analysis approach were selected to identify the most preferred locations to site a processing facility. For an optimal site selection, seven major criteria including proximity to settlements, water resources, artisanal mining sites, roads, railways, tectonic zones, and slopes were considered to establish a suitable location for a processing facility. Site characterizations and environmental considerations, incorporating identified constraints such as proximity to large scale mines, forest reserves and state lands to site an appropriate position were selected. The analysis was limited to criteria that were selected and relevant to the area under investigation. Saaty’s analytical hierarchy process was utilized to derive relative importance weights of the criteria and then a weighted linear combination technique was applied to combine the factors for determination of the degree of potential site suitability. The final map output indicates estimated potential sites identified for the establishment of a facility centre. The results obtained provide intuitive areas suitable for consideration

The context of this research focuses on the efficacy of design studio as a form of teaching and learning. The established model of project-based teaching makes simple parallels between studio and professional practice. However, through comparison of the discourses it is clear that they are of different character. The protocols of the tutorial tradition can act to position the tutor as a defender of the knowledge community rather than a discourse guide for the student. The question arises as to what constitutes the core knowledge that would enable better self-directed study. Rather than focus on key knowledge, there has been an attempt in other fields to agree and share ‘threshold concepts’ within disciplinary knowledge. Meyer and Land describe threshold concepts as representing “a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress [1]. The tutor’s role should be to assist in transforming student’s understanding through the mastery of the ‘troublesome knowledge’ that threshold concepts may embody. Teaching and learning environments under such approaches have been described as ‘liminal’: holding the learner in an ‘in-between’ state new understanding may be difficult and involve identity shifts. Research on the consequence of pressures on facilities and studio space concur, and indicate that studio spaces can be much better used in assisting the path of learning [2]. Through an overview map of threshold concepts, the opportunities for blended learning in supporting student learning in the liminal space of the design studio become much clearer [3] Design studio needs to be recontextualised within the discourse of higher education scholarship, based on a clarified curriculum built from an understanding of what constitutes its threshold concepts. The studio needs to be reconsidered as a space quite unlike that of the practitioner, a liminal space. 1. Meyer, J.H.F. and R. Land, Threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge. Based on an original and comprehensive database of all feature fiction films produced in Mercosur between 2004 and 2012, the paper analyses whether the Mercosur film industry has evolved towards an integrated and culturally more diverse market. It provides a summary of policy opportunities in terms of integration and diversity, emphasizing the limiter role played by regional policies. It then shows that although the Mercosur film industry remains rather disintegrated, it tends to become more integrated and culturally more diverse. From a methodological point of view, the combination of Social Network Analysis and the Stirling Model opens up interesting research tracks to analyse creative industries in terms of their market integration and their cultural diversity.

This paper describes a methodology of using individual engineering undergraduate student projects as a means of effectively and efficiently developing new Design-Build-Test (DBT) learning experiences and challenges.
A key aspect of the rationale for this approach is that it benefits all parties. The student undertaking the individual project gets an authentic experience of producing a functional artefact, which has been the result of a design process that addresses conception, design, implementation and operation. The supervising faculty member benefits from live prototyping of new curriculum content and resources with a student who is at a similar level of knowledge and experience as the intended end users of the DBT outputs. The multiple students who ultimately undertake the DBT experiences / challenges benefit from the enhanced nature of a learning experience which has been “road tested” and optimised.
To demonstrate the methodology the paper will describe a case study example of an individual project completed in 2015. This resulted in a DBT design challenge with a theme of designing a catapult for throwing table tennis balls, the device being made from components laser cut from medium density fibreboard (MDF). Further three different modes of operation will be described which use the same resource materials but operate over different timescales and with different learning outcomes, from an icebreaker exercise focused on developing team dynamics through to full DBT where students get an opportunity to experience the full impact of their design decisions by competing against other students with a catapult they have designed and built themselves.

In 2015 Ireland has arguably begun to make its first bold steps in confronting the challenges of energy transition, with the objective of a “low carbon, climate resilient and environmentally sustainable economy by the end of the year 2050” expressed in the 2015 Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Bill and the 2015 Energy Bill acknowledging that energy transformation relied on a new breed of ‘energy citizens’. These represent the first formal articulation of Ireland’s ambition to engage in a radical, long-term and far-reaching transition process, and raises a myriad of questions over how this can be operationalised, resourced and whether it can maintain political momentum. A range of perspectives on these issues is provided in the growing body of literature on transition theories (Rotmans et al 2001, Markard et al 2012) and the inter-disciplinary EPA-funded CC Transitions project, based at Queen’s University Belfast, represents an attempt to translate this into the context of Ireland’s institutions and technological profile. By relating this to international research on sustainability transitions, which conceptualises transitions as multi-level, multi-phase and multi-actor processes, this paper will explore the opportunities of alternative pathways that could take Ireland towards a more progressing, inclusive and effective low carbon future. Drawing on a number of case studies it will highlight some of the capacities for transition required in Irish society: where these exist, how they are being built or enabled, and the barriers to wider social change.

Echtzeitbasierte Anlagenüberwachung gewinnt in industrieller Umgebung zunehmend an Bedeutung.

The aim of this report is to give an overview of the results of Work Package 5 “Engineering Tools”. In this workpackage numerical tools have been developed for all relevant CHCP systems in the PolySMART demonstration projects (WP3). First, existing simulation platforms have been described and specific characteristics have been identified. Several different simulation platforms are in principle appropriate for the needs in the PolySMART project. The result is an evaluation of available simulation and engineering tools for CHCP simulation, and an agreement upon a common simulation environment within the PolySMART project. Next, numerical models for components in the demonstration projects have been developed. These models are available to the PolySMART consortium. Of all modeled components an overall and detailed working principle is formulated, including a parameter list and (in some cases) a control strategy. Finally, for four CHCP systems in the PolySMART project, a system simulation model has been developed. For each system simulation a separate deliverable is available (D5.5b to D5.5e) These deliverables replace deliverable 5.4 ‘system models’. The numerical models for components and systems developed in the Polysmart project form a valuable basis for the component development and optimisation and for the system optimisation, both within and outside the project. Developers and researchers interested in more information about specific models can refer to the institutes and contact persons involved in the model development.

Na colheita de dados utilizámos o SWLS, (Satisfaction with Life Scale) e o OARS (Olders Americans Research and Services). A população idosa do nosso estudo revela na sua maioria estar insatisfeita com a vida e com limitações ao nível da saúde física, mental e no desempenho das actividades diárias. Verificámos no entanto, que não existe relação entre a satisfação com a vida e os recursos sociais, económicos, mentais e físicos, sendo que estes se correlacionam entre si. Este estudo possibilitou que se fizesse uma análise crítica acerca da institucionalização dos idosos, com vista a uma maior humanização neste grupo etário. / This study is part of the cohort I of a research project based on the population, called "Trajectories of Aging Social Response in the Elderly: Study of the Predictive Factors of Healthy Aging and Dementia. The main objective is to study and describe whether a relationship exists between life satisfaction and social resources are real and perceived by the institutionalized elderly in the municipality of Coimbra. Specific objectives we set out to assess: the relationship between social resources and the actual perceived by the elderly, the relationship between social resources and the actual perceived by informants, to know the assessment of social resources of the elderly evaluated by OARS; know the satisfaction life of the elderly evaluated by the SWLS, and finally evaluate the correlation between the SWLS and the OARS we evaluated 45 elderly aged 65 and 95 years who are in social response (home and day care). In data collection used in the SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale) and OARS (Olders Americans Research and Services). The elderly population of our study reveals mostly being dissatisfied with life and with limitations in terms of physical, mental and performance of daily activities. We found however, that there is no relationship between life satisfaction and social resources, economic, mental and physical and these correlate with each other. This study made it possible to do a critical analysis of the institutionalization of the elderly with a view to further humanize this age group.
