This paper considers the lift forces acting on a pipeline with a small gap between the pipeline and the plane bottom or scoring bottom. A more reasonable fluid force on the pipeline has been obtained by applying the knowledge of modified potential theory (MPT), which includes the influences of the downstream wake. By finite element method, an iteration procedure is used to solve problems of the nonlinear fluid-structure interaction. Comparing the deflection and the stress distributions with the difference sea bottoms, the failure patterns of a spanning pipeline have been discussed. The results are essential for engineers to assess pipeline stability.

Sand storm is a serious environmental threat to humans. Sand particles are transported by saltation and suspension, causing soil erosion in one place and deposition in another. In order to prevent and predict sand storms, the causes and the manners of particle motions must be studied in detail. In this paper a standard k-epsilon model is used for the gas phase simulation and the discrete element method (DEM) is used to predict the movements of particles using an in-house procedure. The data are summarized in an Eulerian-Eulerian regime after simulation to get the statistical particle Reynolds stress and particle collision stress. The results show that for the current case the Reynolds stress and the air shear stress predominate in the region 20-250 mm above the initial sand bed surface. However, in the region below 3 mm, the collision stress must be taken into account in predicting particle movement. In this paper, silver-loaded TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by photochemical impregnation method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), photooxidation of phenol and photoreduction of Cr(VI). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to detect photoproduced paramagnetic radicals. The correlation of photocatalytic activity and photogenerated reactive species was discussed, and the mechanism of silver-loaded TiO2 for enhancement of photocatalytic activity was elucidated. The results show that deposited silver on TiO2 Surface acts as a site where electrons accumulate. The better separation between electrons and holes on the modified TiO2 surface allowed more efficiency for the oxidation and reduction reactions. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the increased amounts of O-2(.-) reactive species and surface Ti3+ reactive center on silver-loaded TiO2 photocatalyst. It is indispensable to remove CO at the level of less than 50ppm in H-2-rich feed gas for the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In this paper, catalyst with high activity and selectivity, and a microchannel reactor for CO preferential oxidation (PROX) have been developed. The results indicated that potassium on supported Rh metal catalysts had a promoting effect in the CO selective catalytic oxidation under H-2-rich stream, and microchannel reactor has an excellent ability to use in on-board hydrogen generation system. CO conversion keeps at high levels even at a very high GHSV as 500 000 h(-1), so, miniaturization of hydrogen generation system can be achieved by using the microchannel reactor. An electroosmotic pump (EOP) capable of generating pressure above 3 MPa and mul/min flow rate with reverse phase mobile phases of HPLC was constructed and evaluated. The pump consisted of three parallel connected fused silica capillary columns (25 cm x 320 mum I.D.) packed with 2 mum silica materials, hollow electrodes, a high voltage DC power supply, and. a liquid pressure transducer. The EOP was applied in a capillary liquid chromatographic system for mobile phase delivery instead of a mechanical pump. Standard samples containing thiourea, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene and acetonitrile were separated on a 15 cm x 320 mum I.D. 5 mum Chromasil C-18 packed capillary column with acetonitrile/water as mobile phase. The transformation of olefin to aromatics over ZSM-5 catalysts with different K-loadings has been investigated both in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor and in a pulse microreactor. Investigation of variation of olefin aromatization activity with K-loadings shows that strong acid sites are indispensable for the converting of olefin to aromatics. As intermediates of olefin aromatization process, butadiene and cyclopentene not only show much higher aromatization activity than mono-olefins, but also can be transformed into aromatics over relatively weak acid sites of K/ZSM-5. A proposal is put forward, stating that among all the steps experienced in olefins aromatization, the formation of diene or cycloolfin from mono-olefins through hydrogen transfer is the key step and can be catalyzed by strong acid sites.

A metal ions (Ag, Bi, V, Mo) modified sol-gel method was used to prepare a mesoporous Ag0.01Bi0.85V0.54Mo0.45O4 catalytic membrane which was used in the selective oxidation of propane to acrolein. By optimizing the preparation parameters, a thin and perfect catalytically active membrane was successfully prepared. SEM results showed that the membrane thickness is similar to5 mum. XRD results revealed that Ag0.01Bi0.85V0.54Mo0.45O4 with a Scheelite structure, which is catalytically active for the selective oxidation of propane to acrolein, was formed in the catalytic membrane only when AgBiVMoO concentrations were higher than 40%. Catalytic reaction results demonstrated that the selective oxidation of propane could be controlled to a certain degree, such as to acrolein, in the catalytic membrane reactor (CMR) compared to the fixed bed reactor (FBR). For example, a selectivity of 54.85% for acrolein in the liquid phase was obtained in the CMR, while only 8.31% was achieved in the FBR. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, conventional TiO2 powder was heated in hydrogen (H-2) gas at a high temperature as pretreatment. The photoactivity of the treated TiO2 samples was evaluated in the photodegradation of sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) in aqueous suspension. The experimental results demonstrated that the photodegradation rates of SSA were significantly enhanced by using the H-2-treated TiO2 catalysts and an optimum temperature for the H-2 treatment was found to be of 500-600 degreesC. The in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal intensity of oxygen vacancies (OV) and trivalent titanium (Ti3+) associated with the photocatalytic activity was studied. The results proved the presence of OV and Ti3+ in the lattice of the H2-treated TiO2 and indicated that both were contributed to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the experimental results presented that the EPR signal intensity of OV and Ti3+ in the H-2-treated TiO2 samples after 10 months storage was still significant higher than that in the untreated TiO2 catalyst. The experiment also demonstrated that the significant enhancement occurred in the photodegradation of phenol using the H-2-treated TiO2. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
