The title compound, C13H12N2O2S, crystallizes with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The two molecules differ in the conformation of the thiocarbonyl and carbonyl groups, and show the typical geometric parameters of substituted thiourea derivatives. The crystal structure is mainly stabilized by intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonding.

The title compound, C(13)H(9)F(3)N(2)O(2)S, crystallizes with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The central thiourea core is roughly coplanar with the furan and benzene rings, showing O-C-N-C(S) torsion angles of 2.3 (4) and -11.4 (2) degrees and (S) C -N-C-C torsion angles of -2.4 (4) and -28.8 (4) degrees, respectively, in the two independent molecules. The trans-cis geometry of the thiourea fragment is stabilized by an intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond between the H atom of the cis thioamide and the carbonyl O atom. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds form centrosymmetric dimers extending along the b axis.

The title compound, C(19)H(16)N(2)O(2)S, was synthesized from furoyl isothiocyanate and N-benzylaniline in dry acetone and the structure redetermined. The structure [Otazo-Sanchez et al. (2001). J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans. 2, pp. 2211-2218] has been re-determined in order to establish the intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. The thiourea group is in the thioamide form. The thiourea group makes a dihedral angle of 29.2 (6)degrees with the furoyl group. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions, forming one-dimensional chains along the a axis. An intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond is also present.

In the title compound, C(8)H(10)N(2)S, the o-tolyl group and the thiourea core are planar. The mean planes of the two groups are almost perpendicular [82.19 (8)degrees]. The thiourea group is in the thioamide form, in which resonance is present. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds, forming two infinite chains parallel to the (110) and (110) planes.

The central thiourea fragment makes dihedral angles of 2.6 (1) and 22.4 (1)degrees with the ketofuran group and the benzene ring, respectively. The molecular structure is stabilized by N-H...O hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure, centrosymmetrically related molecules are linked by a pair of N-H...S hydrogen bonds to form a dimer with an R-2(2)(6) ring motif.

In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, forming one-dimensional chains along the c axis. An intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond is also present.

The thiourea fragment makes dihedral angles of 3.91 (16) and 37.83 (12)degrees with the ketofuran group and the benzene ring, respectively. The molecular geometry is stabilized by N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure, centrosymmetrically related molecules are linked by two intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds to form dimers.

In the title compound, C(16)H(12)N(2)O(2)S, the carbonylthiourea group forms dihedral angles of 75.4 (1) and 13.1 (2)degrees, respectively, with the naphthalene ring system and furan ring. The molecule adopts a trans-cis configuration with respect to the positions of the furoyl and naphthyl groups relative to the S atom across the thiourea C-N bonds. This geometry is stabilized by an N-H center dot center dot center dot center dot O intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds, forming centrosymmetric dimers which are interlinked through C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

We used morphological and molecular approaches to evaluate the diversity of free-living marine nematodes (order Enoplida) at four coastal sites in the Gulf of California and three on the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico. We identified 22 morphological species belonging to six families, of which Thoracostomopsidae and Oncholaimidae were the most diverse. The genus Mesacanthion (Thoracostomopsidae) was the most widespread and diverse. Five allopatric species, genetically and morphologically differentiated, were found in two localities in the Gulf of California (M. sp1 and M. sp2) and three in the Pacific coast (M. sp3, M. sp4 and M. sp5). Overall, we produced 19 and 20 sequences for the 18S and 28S genes, respectively. Neither gene displayed intraspecific polymorphisms, which allowed us to establish that some morphological variation was likely either ontogenetic or due to phenotypic plasticity. Although 18S and 28S phylogenies were topologically congruent (incongruence length difference test, P > 0.05), divergences between species were much higher in the 28S gene. Moreover, this gene possessed a stronger phylogenetic signal to resolve relationships involving Rhabdodemania and Bathylaimus. On the other hand, the close relationship of Pareurystomina (Enchilidiidae) with oncholaimids warrants further study. The 28S sequences (D2D3 domain) may be better suited for DNA barcoding of marine nematodes than those from the 18S rDNA, particularly for differentiating closely related or cryptic species. Finally, our results underline the relevance of adopting an integrative approach encompassing morphological and molecular analyses to improve the assessment of marine nematode diversity and advance their taxonomy.

Study design: Cross-sectional study. Objectives: To observe if there is a relationship between the level of injury by the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) and cortical somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) recordings of the median nerve in patients with quadriplegia. Setting: Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic at the university hospital in Brazil. Methods: Fourteen individuals with quadriplegia and 8 healthy individuals were evaluated. Electrophysiological assessment of the median nerve was performed by evoked potential equipment. The injury level was obtained by ASIA. N(9), N(13) and N(20) were analyzed based on the presence or absence of responses. The parameters used for analyzing these responses were the latency and the amplitude. Data were analyzed using mixed-effect models. Results: N(9) responses were found in all patients with quadriplegia with a similar latency and amplitude observed in healthy individuals; N(13) responses were not found in any patients with quadriplegia. N(20) responses were not found in C5 patients with quadriplegia but it was present in C6 and C7 patients. Their latencies were similar to healthy individuals (P > 0.05) but the amplitudes were decreased (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the SSEP responses depend on the injury level, considering that the individuals with C6 and C7 injury levels, both complete and incomplete, presented SSEP recordings in the cortical area. It also showed a relationship between the level of spinal cord injury assessed by ASIA and the median nerve SSEP responses, through the latency and amplitude recordings. The oxidative stress biomarkers of exposure, such as reduced glutathione (GSH), activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO), were measured in the blood of three cichlid fish (Oreochromis niloticus, Tilapia rendalli, and Geophagus brasiliensis) taken during two seasons from two sites, unpolluted and polluted by industrial effluents, to evaluate the effectiveness of these biomarkers in assessing the impact of water contamination. The LPO levels in the blood were higher in fish from the metal-contaminated site and the chronic exposure led to significant changes in GPx, CAT, and SOD activities in all three cichlid species. The considerable variation of responses in these cichlids to water contamination evidenced differences in sensitivity to the metal contamination and/or in the potential to respond to it highlighting the importance of using a set of related biomarkers to assess the impact of water contamination. This work presents a method for predicting resource availability in opportunistic grids by means of use pattern analysis (UPA), a technique based on non-supervised learning methods. This prediction method is based on the assumption of the existence of several classes of computational resource use patterns, which can be used to predict the resource availability. Trace-driven simulations validate this basic assumptions, which also provide the parameter settings for the accurate learning of resource use patterns. Experiments made with an implementation of the UPA method show the feasibility of its use in the scheduling of grid tasks with very little overhead. The experiments also demonstrate the method`s superiority over other predictive and non-predictive methods. An adaptative prediction method is suggested to deal with the lack of training data at initialization. Further adaptative behaviour is motivated by experiments which show that, in some special environments, reliable resource use patterns may not always be detected.
