Protein-energy-malnutrition is a growing problem in industrialised countries. Many studies have found malnourishment in 20-60% of hospitalized medical or surgical patients, as well as out-patients. Malnutrition negatively influences patients' prognosis, immune system, muscle strength, and quality of life. As it is a largely treatable co-morbidity, systematic screening for malnutrition and effective management will improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Early diagnosis and assessment depends on a simple and standardised screening tool that identifies at-risk patients, allowing the medical team in charge to solve patients' nutritional problems with an interdisciplinary approach.

Advances in food transformation have dramatically increased the diversity of products on the market and, consequently, exposed consumers to a complex spectrum of bioactive nutrients whose potential risks and benefits have mostly not been confidently demonstrated. Therefore, tools are needed to efficiently screen products for selected physiological properties before they enter the market. NutriChip is an interdisciplinary modular project funded by the Swiss programme Nano-Tera, which groups scientists from several areas of research with the aim of developing analytical strategies that will enable functional screening of foods. The project focuses on postprandial inflammatory stress, which potentially contributes to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. The first module of the NutriChip project is composed of three in vitro biochemical steps that mimic the digestion process, intestinal absorption, and subsequent modulation of immune cells by the bioavailable nutrients. The second module is a miniaturised form of the first module (gut-on-a-chip) that integrates a microfluidic-based cell co-culture system and super-resolution imaging technologies to provide a physiologically relevant fluid flow environment and allows sensitive real-time analysis of the products screened in vitro. The third module aims at validating the in vitro screening model by assessing the nutritional properties of selected food products in humans. Because of the immunomodulatory properties of milk as well as its amenability to technological transformation, dairy products have been selected as model foods. The NutriChip project reflects the opening of food and nutrition sciences to state-of-the-art technologies, a key step in the translation of transdisciplinary knowledge into nutritional advice.

This study investigated the effects of different environmental treatments and personality types on aggression at mixing of newly weaned domestic piglets. From birth to weaning, 16 litters were housed with their dams in either barren (B) or larger, substrate-enriched (E) environments. At 15 days old, piglets were classified as 'high' (HR) or low resistant' (LR) in a manual restraint test (backtest), which is thought to identify proactive (HR) and reactive (LR) stress coping strategies that may reflect different personality types. At 30 days old, 128 piglets were weaned, relocated and mixed into 32 pens comprising two HR and two LR unfamiliar pigs, balanced for sex and weaning weight. Eight B and eight E groups changed environmental condition whereas the others remained in the same type of environment. Number and duration of fights. fight outcomes and unilateral fighting were scored for 5 h post-mixing and skin lesions were counted before and 5 h, 1 day and 2 days after mixing. On the day following weaning, fighting and also exploratory and oral manipulative behaviours were measured for 6 h. Generalized Linear Mixed Model analyses suggested interactions between pre-weaning environment, post-weaning environment and personality type. Overall, pre-weaning E pigs had longer fights at weaning and mixing (P=0.01) and fought for longer on the next day (P=0.02) than pre-weaning B pigs, and inflicted more skin lesions (P=0.02). Post-weaning enrichment did not affect fighting at mixing but reduced the time spent fighting the next day (P=0.03). Personality had subtle and environment-dependent effects on fighting, and influenced the "structure" rather than the amount of aggressive behaviour. HR pigs, for instance, bullied (i.e. chased surrendering pigs) more often (P=0.009) and their fighting behaviour was less affected by their relative body weight than that of LR pigs. Post-weaning E pigs showed relatively higher levels of exploratory behaviour (P=0.02) and less oral manipulative behaviour (P=0.04) than post-weaning B pigs. In particular, switching from a good quality environment (E) to a worse quality one (B) at weaning decreased exploratory behaviour on the next day, especially for LR pigs, who also tended to fight with and orally manipulate their pen mates more in that condition, and seemed to be more affected by a deterioration of the environment. Overall, pre-weaning enrichment increased aggression after weaning whereas post-weaning enrichment reduced it, and personality type related to some aspects of fighting behaviour. There is a need for biomethane capture and carbon dioxide sequestration to mitigate evident global climate change. This research work investigated the potential for microalgae to remove CO2 from biogas as a biotechnical method for upgrading the thermal value for subsequent compression, liquification, or introduction to natural gas pipelines. Because biogas is largely methane, the effect of high methane environments on mixed microalgae was explored and found that specific carbon utilization rates were not statistically different when microalgae were exposed to biogas environments (70% v/v CH4) , relative to high CO2 environment. The uses of conventional bubbled column photobioreactors (PBR) were assessed for CO2 removal and subsequent CH4 enrichment. A continuously-bubbled biogas PBR (cB-PBR5) and intermittently-bubbled biogas PBR (iB-PBR) experienced CO2 loading rates of about 1664 and 832 mg C/L*day and showed 30.0 and 60.1 % carbon removal, respectively. However, a lack of biogas enrichment and issues associated growth inhibition due to high CO2 environments as well as stripping the dissolved gases, namely oxygen and nitrogen, from the bulk liquid and introduction to the outlet gas prompted the consideration for gas/liquid separation using nonporous hollow-fiber (HF) membranes for CO2 transfer. The potential for two non-porous HF membrane materials [polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and composite polyurethane (PU)] were modeled along fiber length using a mechanistic model based on polymeric material transport properties (Gilmore et al., 2009). Based on a high CO2:CH4 permeability selectivity for PU of 76.2 the model predicted gas enrichment along an 8.5 cm fiber length. Because PDMS permeability selectivity is low (3.5), evident gas transfer was not predicated along a 34.3 cm length. Both of these HF materials were implemented in hollow-fiber membrane-carbonated biofilm (HFMcB) PBRs for microalgal-mediated biogas enrichment. Phototrophic biofilm colonization occurred on the membrane, where CO2 concentration was greatest. The presence of a biofilm demonstrated greater resiliency to high CO2 environments, compared to the conventional PBRs. However, as the PDMS model predicted, the PDMS HFMcBs did not demonstrate gas enrichment. These reactors received CO2 loading rates of 200 mg C/L*day based on PDMS permeability flux and showed approximately 65% removal of the total C transferred across the membrane. Thus, the HFMcBs demonstrated controlled carbonation of the bulk liquid via a nonporous HF membrane. Likewise, the experimental PU HFMcB did not show gas enrichment yet this result should be further explored due to the high permeability selectivity of the polymeric material. Chemical stratifications, namely pH and dissolved O2, present in a PDMS membrane-carbonated biofilm were analyzed using electrochemical microsensors. Results indicated that high DO (20 mg L-1) exists at surface of the biofilm where light availability is greatest and low pH microenvironments (pH=5.40) exist deep in the biofilm where the diffusive flux of CO2 drives transfer through the biofilm. The presence of a 400-600 ¿m liquid phase boundary layer was evident from microsensor profiles. Cryosectioning of the biofilm samples showed the biofilm to be approximately 1.17 ± 0.07 mm thick, suggesting that the high localized concentration of biomass associated with the phototrophic biofilm aided in overcoming inhibition in a microenvironment dominated by CO2(aq). Challenges of biofilm detachment and PBR fouling as well as microalgal growth inhibition in the presence of high CO2 content remain for applications of microalgae for biogas enrichment.

A 36 m long ice core down to bedrock from the Cerro Tapado glacier (5536 m a.s.l, 30°08' S, 69°55' W) was analyzed to reconstruct past climatic conditions for Northern Chile. Because of the marked seasonality in the precipitation (short wet winter and extended dry summer periods) in this region, major snow ablation and related post-depositional processes occur on the glacier surface during summer periods. They include predominantly sublimation and dry deposition. Assuming that, like measured during the field campaign, the enrichment of chloride was always related to sublimation, the chemical record along the ice core may be applied to reconstruct the history of such secondary processes linked to the past climatic conditions over northern Chile. For the time period 1962–1999, a mean annual net accumulation of 316 mm water equivalent (weq) and 327 mm weq loss by sublimation was deduced by this method. This corresponds to an initial total annual accumulation of 539 mm weq. The annual variability of the accumulation and sublimation is related with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI): higher net-accumulation during El-Niño years and more sublimation during La Niña years. The deepest part of the ice record shows a time discontinuity; with an ice body deposited under different climatic conditions: 290 mm higher precipitation but with reduced seasonal distribution (+470 mm in winter and –180 mm in summer) and –3°C lower mean annual temperature. Unfortunately, its age is unknown. The comparison with regional proxy data however let us conclude that the glacier buildup did most likely occur after the dry mid-Holocene.

The gastrointestinal tract of neonatal calves is relatively mature but still requires morphological and functional changes. The intake of colostrum with its nutrient and non-nutrient components exerts marked effects on gastrointestinal development and function. Colostrum intake provides immunoprotection (passive immunity by immunoglobulins) and is essential for survival of neonates of most species. Furthermore, there are important transient as well as long-lasting systemic effects on the nutritional status, on metabolism, and on various endocrine systems due to intake of nutrient and non-nutrient colostral components that contribute to survival in the stressful postnatal period. Colostrum is much more than just a supplier of immunoglobulins.

Motivation: Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) has been developed recently to capture moderate but coordinated changes in the expression of sets of functionally related genes. We propose number of extensions to GSEA, which uses different statistics to describe the association between genes and phenotype of interest. We make use of dimension reduction procedures, such as principle component analysis to identify gene sets containing coordinated genes. We also address the problem of overlapping among gene sets in this paper. Results: We applied our methods to the data come from a clinical trial in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) [1]. We identified interesting gene sets using different statistics. We find that gender may have effects on the gene expression in addition to the phenotype effects. Investigating overlap among interesting gene sets indicate that overlapping could alter the interpretation of the significant results.

Among the many applications of microarray technology, one of the most popular is the identification of genes that are differentially expressed in two conditions. A common statistical approach is to quantify the interest of each gene with a p-value, adjust these p-values for multiple comparisons, chose an appropriate cut-off, and create a list of candidate genes. This approach has been criticized for ignoring biological knowledge regarding how genes work together. Recently a series of methods, that do incorporate biological knowledge, have been proposed. However, many of these methods seem overly complicated. Furthermore, the most popular method, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), is based on a statistical test known for its lack of sensitivity. In this paper we compare the performance of a simple alternative to GSEA.We find that this simple solution clearly outperforms GSEA.We demonstrate this with eight different microarray datasets.

Starvation and weight loss are common accompaniments of severe illness. The functional consequences of such malnutrition include not only physical changes but also psychological changes such as depression, anxiety, irritability, apathy, poor sleep pattern and loss of concentration. We carried out a pilot observational study in 22 undernourished patients at the time of referral to the nutritional team and after 8 days of nutritional support, using the Profile of Mood States Score (POMS) questionnaire to determine whether measurable and clinically significant changes in mood occurred with treatment.

In the development of a technique it was necessary to learn the fundamentals of ore microscopy as applied to the various minerals of silver, which included the use of reflected polarized light, etch reactions, micro­chemical analysis, and sight recognition of mineral. In addition it was necessary to become familiar with the accepted criteria of sequence, replacement, and other textural phenomena.
