Background The population exposed to potentially hazardous substances through inappropriate and unsafe management practices related to disposal and recycling of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment, collectively known as e-waste, is increasing. We aimed to summarise the evidence for the association between such exposures and adverse health outcomes. Methods We systematically searched five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycNET, and CINAHL) for studies assessing the association between exposure to e-waste and outcomes related to mental health and neurodevelopment, physical health, education, and violence and criminal behaviour, from Jan 1, 1965, to Dec 17, 2012, and yielded 2274 records. Of the 165 full-text articles assessed for eligibility, we excluded a further 142, resulting in the inclusion of 23 published epidemiological studies that met the predetermined criteria. All studies were from southeast China. We assessed evidence of a causal association between exposure to e-waste and health outcomes within the Bradford Hill framework. Findings We recorded plausible outcomes associated with exposure to e-waste including change in thyroid function, changes in cellular expression and function, adverse neonatal outcomes, changes in temperament and behaviour, and decreased lung function. Boys aged 8–9 years living in an e-waste recycling town had a lower forced vital capacity than did those living in a control town. Significant negative correlations between blood chromium concentrations and forced vital capacity in children aged 11 and 13 years were also reported. Findings from most studies showed increases in spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and premature births, and reduced birthweights and birth lengths associated with exposure to e-waste. People living in e-waste recycling towns or working in e-waste recycling had evidence of greater DNA damage than did those living in control towns. Studies of the effects of exposure to e-waste on thyroid function were not consistent. One study related exposure to e-waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment to educational outcomes. Interpretation Although data suggest that exposure to e-waste is harmful to health, more well designed epidemiological investigations in vulnerable populations, especially pregnant women and children, are needed to confirm these associations. The synthesis, electronic absorption and 1H NMR spectra of a suite of novel porphyrinoids derived from meso-bromoporphyrins by palladium-catalysed aminations using ethyl and tert-butylcarbazates are reported. Instead of the expected carbazate-substituted porphyrins, a facile oxidative dearomatisation of the porphyrin ring occurs in high yield, especially for the nickel(II) complexes, resulting in high yields of 5,15-diiminoporphodimethenes (DIPDs). The analogous zinc(II) and free base DIPDs were also characterised, the former by X-ray crystallography. The oxidation and reduction reactions of DIPDs and their precursor carbazate porphyrins were studied. Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used to calculate the optimised geometries and frontier molecular orbitals of DIPD Ni8c and bis(azocarboxylate) 19c, and Time Dependent DFT calculations allowed the prediction of electronic absorption spectra, whose characteristics corresponded well with those of the observed solution spectra. In the latter case, the calculated low-energy absorptions were unlike those of a typical porphyrin, due to the near-degeneracy of the highest filled frontier orbitals, and the wide energy separation between the unfilled orbitals. This feature was present in the observed spectrum.

We investigate, using scanning tunnelling microscopy, the adsorption of pentacene on Ni(111) at room temperature and the behaviour of these monolayer films with annealing up to 700 °C. We observe the conversion of pentacene into graphene, which begins from as low as 220 °C with the coalescence of pentacene molecules into large planar aggregates. Then, by annealing at 350 °C for 20 minutes, these aggregates expand into irregular domains of graphene tens of nanometers in size. On surfaces where graphene and nickel carbide coexist, pentacene shows preferential adsorption on the nickel carbide phase. The same pentacene to graphene transformation was also achieved on Cu(111), but at a higher activation temperature, producing large graphene domains that exhibit a range of moiré superlattice periodicities.

This article contributes to the theorization of the role of informal regulation (undertaken by leading firms) in the ongoing organization of global production networks. It does so through a qualitative case study of BHP Billiton's Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation (RNO) in the rural Shire of Ravensthorpe in Western Australia. This less tangible, and to date under-researched, dimension of global production networks is foregrounded through a focus on the corporate social responsibility strategy implemented by RNO in the service of achieving and/or demonstrating a broader ‘social licence to operate’. This ‘licence’ functions – beyond the corporation – as a legitimated and legitimating multi-scalar mechanism through which to gain and maintain access to mineral resources and thus to establish viable and ongoing global production networks. Further, this informal regulation is shown to shape social relations and qualities of place conducive to competitive global mineral extraction and to facilitate the positioning of local communities and places in mineral global production networks.

The reduction of meso-formyl derivatives of 5,15-diaryl- and 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (and their nickel(II) complexes) to the corresponding meso-methyl porphyrins is achieved in high yield by microwave heating of the substrate in dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of acids such as trifluoroacetic acid, or even just with added water. The reactions are complete in less than 30 min at 250 °C. The reaction is strongly suppressed in very dry DMF in the absence of added acid. The meso-hydroxymethyl porphyrins are also reduced to the methyl derivatives, suggesting the primary alcohols may be intermediates in the exhaustive reduction. UV-visible spectra taken at intervals during reaction at 240 °C indicated that at least one other intermediate is present, but it was not identified. In d7-DMF, the methylporphyrin isolated was mainly Por-CD2H, showing that both of the added hydrogens arise from the solvent, and not from the added water or acid.

A new dearomatized porphyrinoid, 5,10-diiminoporphodimethene (5,10-DIPD), has been prepared by palladium-catalyzed hydrazination of 5,10-dibromo-15,20-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrin and its nickel(II) complex, by using ethyl and 4-methoxybenzyl carbazates. The oxidative dearomatization of the porphyrin ring occurs in high yield. Further oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone forms the corresponding 5,10-bis(azocarboxylates), thereby restoring the porphyrin aromaticity. The UV/visible spectra of the NiII DIPDs exhibit remarkable redshifts of the lowest-energy bands to 780 nm, and differential pulse voltammetry reveals a contracted electrochemical HOMO–LUMO gap of 1.44 V. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the optimized geometries and frontier molecular orbitals of model 5,10-DIPD Ni7c and 5,10-bis(azocarboxylate) Ni8c. The conformations of the carbamate groups and the configurations of the CNZ unit were considered in conjunction with the NOESY spectra, to generate the global minimum geometry and two other structures with slightly higher energies. In the absence of solution data regarding conformations, ten possible local minimum conformations were considered for Ni8c. Partition of the porphyrin macrocycle into tri- and monopyrrole fragments in Ni7c and the inclusion of terminal conjugating functional groups generate unique frontier molecular orbital distributions and a HOMO–LUMO transition with a strong element of charge transfer from the monopyrrole ring. Time-dependent DFT calculations were performed for the three lowest-energy structures of Ni7c and Ni8c, and weighting according to their energies allowed the prediction of the electronic spectra. The calculations reproduce the lower-energy regions of the spectra and the overall forms of the spectra with high accuracy, but agreement is not as good in the Soret region below 450 nm.

A strategy to tackle the synthesis of azoporphyrins with unsubstituted terminal meso positions was investigated. It comprised the combination of diaza-Diels–Alder (DADA) reaction of 1,3-dienes with dialkyl azodicarboxylates, decarboxylative hydrolysis of the bis(carbamates), palladium-catalyzed amination of bromoporphyrin precursors, and retro-DADA reactions to release the ultimate targets. The somewhat confused historical results on the DADA reactions of 1,3-cyclohexadiene were clarified, but the hydrolyses yielded extremely air-sensitive amines which decomposed completely in minutes via autooxidation and retro-DADA reaction. With anthracene or 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene as the diene, the synthesis of azoporphyrin was not achieved but three amino-substituted porphyrins were obtained in moderate yields under mild conditions. The X-ray crystal structures of several of the intermediates and the final aminoanthracene-porphyrin nickel(II) complex were determined.

Silver/metal hydride (Ag/MH) cells of about 1 Ah capacity have been fabricated and their discharge characteristics at different rates of discharge, faradaic efficiency, cycle life and a.c. impedance have been evaluated. These cells comprise metal-hydride electrodes prepared by employing similar to 60 mu m powder of an AB(2)-Laves phase alloy of nominal composition Zr0.5Ti0.5V0.6Cr0.2Ni1.2 with PTFE binder on a nickel-mesh substrate as the negative plates and commercial-grade silver electrodes as the positive plates. The cells are positive limited and exhibit two distinct voltage plateaus characteristic of two-step reduction of AgO to Ag during their low rates of discharge between C/20 and C/10. This feature is, however, absent when the cells are discharged at C/5 rate. On charging the cells to 100% of their capacity, the faradaic efficiency is found to be 100%. The impedance of the Ag/MH cell is essentially due to the impedance of the silver electrodes, since MH electrodes offer negligible impedance. The cells may be subjected to a large number of charge-discharge cycles with little deterioration.

The solidification behaviour is described of two pure metals (Bi and Ni) and two eutectic alloys (A1-Ge and AI-Cu) under nonequilibrium conditions, in particular the microsecond pulsed laser surface melting. The resolidification behaviour of bismuth shows that epitaxial regrowth is the dominant mechanism. For mixed grain size, regrowth of larger grains dominates the microstructure and can result in the development of texture. In the case of nickel, epitaxial growth has been noted. For lower energy pulse-melted pool, grain refinement takes place, indicating nucleation of fresh nickel grains. The A1-Ge eutectic alloy indicates the nucleation and columnar growth of a metastable monoclinic phase from the melt-substrate interface at a high power density laser irradiation. An equiaxed microstructure containing the same monoclinic phase is obtained at a lower power density laser irradiation. It is shown that the requirement of solution partition acts as a barrier to eutectic regrowth from the substrate. The laser-melted pool of A1-Cu eutectic alloy includes columnar growth of c~-A1 and 0-A12Cu phase followed by the dendritic growth of A12Cu phase with ct-Al forming at the interdendritic space. In addition, a banded microstructure was observed in the resolidified laser-melted pool.

Permalloy (NiFeMo) nanoparticles were fabricated by laser ablation of bulk material in water with a UV pulsed laser. Transmission electron microscope images showed that approximately spherical particles about 50 nm in diameter were formed in the ablation process. All diffraction peaks corresponding to the bulk material were present in the nanoparticles. In addition to these peaks several new peaks were observed in the nanoparticles, which were attributed to nickel oxide.

PbS quantum dots capped with mercaptoethanol (C2H5OSH) have been synthesized in poly vinyl alcohol and used to investigate their photoluminescence (PL) response to various ions such as zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). The enhancement in the PL intensity was observed with specific ions namely Zn, Cd, Hg and Ag. Among these four ions, the PL response to Hg and Ag even at sub-micro-molar concentrations was quite high, compared to that of Zn and Cd. It was observed that the change in Pb and S molar ratio has profound effect on the sensitivity of these ions. These results indicate that the sensitivity of these QDs could be fine-tuned by controlling the S concentration at the surface. Contrary to the above, Cu quenched the photoluminescence. In Cd based QDs related ion probing, Hg and Cu was found to have quenching properties, however, our PbS QDs have quenching property only for Cu ions. This was attributed to the formation HgS at the surface that has bandgap higher than PbS. Another interesting property of PbS in PVA observed is photo-brightening mechanism due to the curing of the polymer with laser. However, the presence of excess ions at the surface changes its property to photo-darkening/brightening that depends on the direction of carrier transfer mechanism (from QDs to the surface adsorbed metal ions or vice-versa). which is an interesting feature for metal ion detectivity.

Ordinary nickel (II) oxide prepared by any of the usual methods is always contaminated with some higher valency states of nickel. Such nickel oxide however can be converted to pure nickel (II) oxide by soaking for some hours at 800–850°C in a closed system under a static inert atmosphere and in the presence of pure MnO as oxygen-getter. The resulting Ni(IT)O is highly resistant to oxidation.

Interaction of nickel(I1) and copper(I1) complexes of 4,9-dimethy1-5,8-diazadodeca-4,8diene-2,1 ldione, Ni(baen) and 4,6,9-trimethyl-5, 8diazadodeca-4,8-diene-2,ll-dione, Ni(bapn), with arene diazonium chlorides in buffered solutions of methanol yielded metal derivatives of glyoxaliminearylhydrazones. This typical electrophilic addition at the 3-carbon of the complex occurs owing to the pseudo aromatic behaviour of the chelate ring. A mechanism which predicts the attack of the diazonium cation through the coordination shell of the metal is well documented from the available experimental evidences. The chemical reactivity of a few complexes with a single residual non-substituted y-carbon is reasonably manifested by their reaction with phenyl isocyanate.

We report a detailed and full computational investigation on the hydrovinylation reaction of styrene with the Ni(II)-phospholane catalytic system, which was originally presumed to proceed through a cationic mechanism involving a nickel hydride intermediate. The following general features emerge from this study on a specific catalyst complex that was found to give quantitative yield and moderate selectivity: (a) the activation barrier for the initiation (18.8 kcal/mol) is higher than that for the reaction due to a low-lying square-planar pentenyl chelate intermediate originating from a Ni(II)-allyl catalyst precursor. Consequently there is an induction period for the catalysis; (b) the exit of product from the catalyst is via a β-H-transfer step instead of the usual β-H elimination pathway, which has a very high activation energy due to a trans effect of the phospholane ligand; (c) the turnover-limiting and enantio- determining transition state is also the β-H-transfer; (d) because of the absence of a hydride intermediate, the unwanted isomerization of the product is prevented; (e) since the enantio-discrimination is decided at the H-transfer stage itself, the configuration of the product in a catalytic cycle influences the enantioselectivity in the subsequent cycle; (f) the trans effect of the sole strong ligand in the d8 square-planar Ni(II), the stability of the η3-benzyl intermediate, and the availability of three coordination sites enable regioselective hydrovinylation over the possible oligomerization/polymerization of the olefin substrates and linear hydrovinylation. This work has also confirmed the previously recognized role of the hemilabile group at various stages in the mechanism.

We focus on athermal phase transitions where in discrete and dissipative avalanches are observed in physical observables as the system jumps from one metastable state to another, when driven by an external field. Using higher order statistics of time dependent avalanches, or noise, in electrical resistivity during temperature-driven martensite transformation in thin nickel-titanium films, we demonstrate evidence suggesting the existence of a singular `global instability' or divergence of the correlation length as a function of temperature at the transition. These results not only establish a mapping of non-equilibrium first order phase transition and equilibrium critical phenomena, but perhaps also call for a re-evaluation of many existing experimental claims of self-organized criticality.
