Background: Although the effect of symptomatic back pain on functional movement has been investigated, changes to spinal movement patterns in essentially pain-free people with a history of recurrent back pain are largely unreported. Reaching activities, important for everyday and occupational function, often present problems to such people, but have not been considered in this population. The purpose of this study was to compare the amplitude and timing of spinal and hip motions during two, seated reaching activities in people with and without a history of recurrent low back pain (RLBP).Methods: Spinal and hip motions during reaching downward and across the body, in both directions, were tracked using electromagnetic sensors. Analyses were conducted to explore the amplitudes, velocities and timings of 3D segmental movements and to compare controls with subjects with recurrent, but asymptomatic lumbar or lumbosacral pain.Findings: We detected significant differences in the amplitude and timing of movement in the lower thoracic region, with the RLBP group restricting movement and demonstrating compensatory increased motion at the hip. The lumbar region displayed no significant between-group differences. The order in which the spinal segments achieved peak velocity in cross-reaching was reversed in RLBP compared to controls, with lumbar motion leading in controls and lagging in RLBP.Interpretation: Subjects with a history of RLBP show a number of altered kinematic features during reaching activities which are not related to the presence or intensity of pain, but which suggest adaptive changes to movement control. Introduction: Low back pain is characterized as pain between the inferior margins of the ribs to the gluteal fold, reaching about 80% of the population throughout life. Its repercussions can affect the functionality of the subjects in their daily activities. The aim was to investigate whether a relation between symptoms of pain in the lumbar region with range of motion and functional disability. Methods: We interviewed 101 subjects with a mean age of 22.61 ± 4.06 years, these 50 participants were 51 low back pain and other complaints of back pain. OS subjects were assessed for pain by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), mobility Lumbar Schöbber test (TS), flexibility for the Test Sit and Reach (TSA) and feature the Oswestry Disability Index (IOI). For data analysis we used GraphPad Prism 5, the significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: No significant differences were found for the comparison between the TSA of the subjects with and without pain (p = 0.25), nor to compare the performance of the TS for the subjects with and without pain (p = 0.18). Conclusion: It is concluded that in cases evaluated the range of motion has no significant link with the pain but the pain in turn directly influence the functionality of them.

Introduction: the lumbar spine is the main part of the body responsible for the support of the loads, where approximately half of body weight is in stable balance. This support relates to the action of abdominal muscles, of great importance in the balance of that region. The existence of abdominal muscle weakness, such won’t perform its function, may induce pathological postural attitude, that predispose the pain. Objective: to compare the effects of two abdominal strengthening protocols on pain and postural alignment in individuals with low back pain. Method: participated of the study 21 individuals of both genders, with ages between 19 and 25 years old (average 21,8±1,5) and average Body Mass Index (BMI) 21,9 (±2,48), divided randomly in isometric abdominal stimulation group (n=8), abdominal strengthening group (n=7) and control group (n=6). They realized eight sessions of strengthening, when responded Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after each intervention. The control group (n=6) had no intervention. The postural data had been analyzed by photogrammetry. Results: Pain and posture data were analyzed using paired t test, with signifi cance index of 5%. Postural angles had no signifi cant differences (p>0,05) from all angles analyzed after the intervention to none of the groups. For pain values, a signifi cant decrease (p<0,05) was observed since the fi fth session in patients who were treated by the abdominal exercises protocol, and the fi rst session in patients who were treated by the isometric abdominal stimulation protocol. However, this decrease in pain was immediate, not lasting along the treatment sessions, in both protocols. Conclusion: the proposed protocols did not interfere in postural alignment. They were effective to decrease pain in a same session, once the isometric was the most effective, but they weren’t effective in preserving the improves over time.

Thoracolumbar disk extrusion is the most common cause of extradural compression of the spinal cord in dogs. Myelography is one of the most commonly performed techniques for the diagnosis of this affection. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of lumbar myelography in the diagnosis of thoracolumbar intervertebral disk extrusion in dogs, as well as its major complications. Twenty dogs were used in this study. Animals were included when neurological examination suggested thoracolumbar spine lesion, myelography was used as a complementary diagnostic method, and diagnosis of disk extrusion was surgically confirmed. The accuracy of the exam to predict location and lateralization of extruded disk material were evaluated, as well as complications associated to the procedure. Lumbar myelography exhibited 95% and 60% accuracy for location and lateralization of the lesion, respectively, with minimal complications.

The Caudal Cervical Spondylomyelopathy, also known as “Wobbler syndrome” is a neurological disorder that affects mainly breeds of large and giant size, especially Doberman pinsher and Great danes. Its aetiology is multifactorial and leads to a narrowing of the spinal canal by morphological and positional caudal cervical vertebrae (C5, C6 and C7), causing compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. The clinical signs presented by the affected animals are progressive ataxia of hindlimbs and, later, the forelimbs, sometimes progressing to tetraparesis. Neck pain may be present. The diagnosis is made through the association of clinical signs and diagnostic imaging such as radiography, myelography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. According to the classification of the lesion obtained by imaging examinations, the conservative or surgical treatment is established and the prognosis is variable in accordance with the degree of affection of the spinal cord

INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity and it can be influenced by the use of shoe lifts and lateral inclination in order to correct postural asymmetries. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of the use of the shoe lifts (lower and high) unilateral (right and left) during the movement of lateral inclination (right and left) for an evaluation of the postural angles in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: A control group with ten participants without scoliosis and an experimental group with 10 participants with idiopathic scoliosis of double curves (thoracic right and lumbar to the left). Ten reflexive markers were fixed in the spine to determine the postural angles (alpha 1=T2T4-T4T6, alpha 2=T6T8-T8T10, alpha 3=T10T12-T12L2 and alpha 4=L2L4-L4S1)...
