A systematic study of Raman spectra on Yttrium doped NdMnO3 polycrystalline samples was undertaken to understand the lattice dynamics in this compound. Raman active phonons were analyzed and the observed peak were assigned to elucidate various phonon modes in the range (200 - 800) cm(-1). It was observed that at 325 cm(-1) phonon frequency shifts upward as much as upto 4 % with increase in Yttrium content. Lattice distortions manifest themselves by frequency shifts in both bending and tilt modes of MnO6 octahedra, resulting in increase of Raman band line-widths.

Depalladation of the monoalkyne-inserted cyclopalldated guanidines (kappa 2(C,N)Pd(2,6-Me2C5H3N)Br] (I and II) in PhCl under reflux conditions and that of the dialkyne-inserted cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)PdBr] (III) in pyridine under reflux conditions afforded a guanidine-containing indole (1), imidaziondole (2), and benzazepine (3) in 80%, 67%, and 76%, yields, respectively. trans-L2PdBr2] species (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N, C5H5N) were also isolated in the aforementioned reactions in 35%, 42%, and 40% yields. Further , the reaction of the cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (IV) with AgBF4 in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic pincer type cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(3)(C,N,O)Pd(MeCN)]BF4] (4) in 85% yield and this palladacycle upon crystallization in MeCN and the reaction of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (V) with AgBf(4) in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic palladacycles {kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(MeCN)(2)]BF4](5 and 6) in 89% and 91% yields, respectively. The separate reactions of 4 with 2 equiv of methyl phenylpropiolate (MPP) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) and the reaction of 5 with 2 equiv of MPP in PhCl at 110 degrees C afforded the guanidine-containing quinazolinium tetrafluoroborate 7 in 25-32% yields. The reaction of 6 with 2 equiv of DPA under otherwise identical conditions afforded the unsymmetrically substituted guanidinium tetrafluoroborate 8, containing a highly substituted naphthalene unit, in 82% yield. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and all compounds except 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Molecular structure of 2 and 3 are nove, as the framework in the former arises due to the formation of two C-N bonds upon depalladation while the butadienyl unit in the latter revealed cis,cis stereochemistry, a-feature unprecedented in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible pathways for the formation of heterocycles/carbocycles are proposed. the influence of substitutents on the aryl rings fo the cyclopalladated guanidine moiety and those on alkynes upon the nature of the products in addressed. Heterocycles 1 and 7 revealed the presence of two rotamers in about a 1.00:0.43 ratio in CDCl3 and in about a 1.00:0.14 ratio in CD3OD, respectively, as detected by H-1 NMR spectroscopy while in CD3CN and DMSO-d(6) (1) and CD3CN and CDCl3 (7), these heterocycles revealed the presence of a single rotamer. These spectral features are attributed to the restricted C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, which possibly arises from steric constraint due to the formation of a N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bond with CDCl3 (1) and N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-D center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds with CD3OD (7).

The problem of finding an optimal vertex cover in a graph is a classic NP-complete problem, and is a special case of the hitting set question. On the other hand, the hitting set problem, when asked in the context of induced geometric objects, often turns out to be exactly the vertex cover problem on restricted classes of graphs. In this work we explore a particular instance of such a phenomenon. We consider the problem of hitting all axis-parallel slabs induced by a point set P, and show that it is equivalent to the problem of finding a vertex cover on a graph whose edge set is the union of two Hamiltonian Paths. We show the latter problem to be NP-complete, and also give an algorithm to find a vertex cover of size at most k, on graphs of maximum degree four, whose running time is 1.2637(k) n(O(1)).

The subgenus Geckoella, the only ground-dwelling radiation within Cyrtodactylus, closely overlaps in distribution with brookii group Hemidactylus in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Both groups have Oligocene origins, the latter with over thrice as many described species. The striking difference in species richness led us to believe that Geckoella diversity is underestimated, and we sampled for Geckoella across peninsular India. A multi-locus phylogeny reveals Geckoella diversity is hugely underestimated, with at least seven undescribed species, doubling previously known richness. Strikingly, the new species correspond to cryptic lineages within described Indian species (complexes); a number of these endemic lineages from the hills of peninsular India outside the Western Ghats, highlighting the undocumented diversity of the Indian dry zone. The Geckoella phylogeny demonstrates deep splits between the Indian species and Sri Lankan G. triedrus, and between Indian dry and wet zone clades, dating back to the late Oligocene. Geckoella and brookii group Hemidactylus show contrasting diversification patterns. Geckoella shows signals of niche conservatism and appears to have retained its ancestral forest habitat. The late Miocene burst in speciation in Geckoella may be linked to the expansion of rain forests during the mid-Miocene climatic optimum and subsequent fragmentation with increasing late Miocene aridification. Ferrimagnetism and metamagnetic features tunable by composition are observed in the magnetic response of Nd1-xYxMnO3, for x=0.1-0.5. For all values of x in the series, the compound crystallizes in orthorhombic Pbnm space group similar to NdMnO3. Magnetization studies reveal a phase transition of the Mn-sublattice below T-N(Mn) approximate to 80 K for all compositions, which, decreases up on diluting the Nd-site with Yttrium. For x=0.35, ferrimagnetism is observed. At 5 K, metamagnetic transition is observed for all compositions x < 0.4. The evolution of magnetic ground states and appearance of ferrimagnetism in Nd1-xYxMnO3 can be accounted for by invoking the scenario of magnetic phase separation. The high frequency electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on x=0.4 sample, which is close to the critical composition for phase separation, revealed complex temperature dependent lineshapes clearly supporting the assumption of magnetic phase separation. 3-Aryl-2-propenoic acid derivatives undergo interesting reactions with hot triethylamine. Substrates like 6 having a methoxyl with a nitro in the ortho and cyanoacrylic derivatives in the para positions give O-demethylated products, for example, entacapone 7. On the other hand compounds like 16 having the NO2 in the para and cyanoacrylic in the ortho position undergo reduction and vinylogation. The latter phenomenon is observed in the absence of the NO2 group also. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A deformable mirror (DM) is an important component of an adaptive optics system. It is known that an on-axis spherical/parabolic optical component, placed at an angle to the incident beam introduces defocus as well as astigmatism in the image plane. Although the former can be compensated by changing the focal plane position, the latter cannot be removed by mere optical realignment. Since the DM is to be used to compensate a turbulence-induced curvature term in addition to other aberrations, it is necessary to determine the aberrations induced by such (curved DM surface) an optical element when placed at an angle (other than 0 deg) of incidence in the optical path. To this effect, we estimate to a first order the aberrations introduced by a DM as a function of the incidence angle and deformation of the DM surface. We record images using a simple setup in which the incident beam is reflected by a 37 channel micro-machined membrane deformable mirror for various angles of incidence. It is observed that astigmatism is a dominant aberration, which was determined by measuring the difference between the tangential and sagittal focal planes. We justify our results on the basis of theoretical simulations and discuss the feasibility of using such a system for adaptive optics considering a trade-off between wavefront correction and astigmatism due to deformation. We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

We study motion around a static Einstein and pure Lovelock black hole in higher dimensions. It is known that in higher dimensions bound orbits exist only for a pure Lovelock black hole in all even dimensions, D = 2N + 2, where N is the degree of Lovelock polynomial action. In particular, we compute periastron shift and light bending, and the latter is given by one of the transverse spatial components of the Riemann curvature tensor. We also consider the pseudo-Newtonian potentials and Kruskal coordinates.

Downscaling of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) based electrochemical devices and gate oxide layers requires successful pattern transfer on YSZ thin films. Among a number of techniques available to transfer patterns to a material, reactive ion etching has the capability to offer high resolution, easily controllable, tunable anisotropic/isotropic pattern transfer for batch processing. This work reports inductively coupled reactive ion etching studies on sputtered YSZ thin films in fluorine and chlorine based plasmas and their etch chemistry analyses using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Etching in SF6 plasma gives an etch rate of 7 nm/min chiefly through physical etching process. For same process parameters, in Cl-2 and BCl3 plasmas, YSZ etch rate is 17 nm/min and 45 nm/min, respectively. Increased etch rate in BCl3 plasma is attributed to its oxygen scavenging property synergetic with other chemical and physical etch pathways. BCl3 etched YSZ films show residue-free and smooth surface. The surface atomic concentration ratio of Zr/Y in BCl3 etched films is closer to as-annealed YSZ thin films. On the other hand, Cl-2 etched films show surface yttrium enrichment. Selectivity ratio of YSZ over silicon (Si), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) are 1:2.7, 1:1, and 1:0.75, respectively, in BCl3 plasma. YSZ etch rate increases to 53 nm/min when nonoxygen supplying carrier wafer like Si3N4 is used. (C) 2015 American Vacuum Society.

Various NixCo1-x alloys (with x varying from 0-60 wt%, Ni: nickel, Co: cobalt) were prepared by vacuum arc melting and mixed with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to design lightweight, flexible and corrosion resistant materials that can attenuate electromagnetic radiation. The saturation magnetization scaled with the fraction of Co in the alloy. Two key properties such as high-magnetic permeability and high-electrical conductivity were targeted. While the former was achieved using a Ni-Co alloy, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the composites accomplished the latter. A unique approach was adopted to prepare the composites wherein PVDF powder along with CNTs and Ni-Co flakes were made into a paste, using a solvent, followed by hot pressing. Interestingly, CNTs facilitated in uniform dispersion of the Ni-Co alloy in PVDF, as manifested from synergistic improvement in the electrical conductivity. A significant improvement in the shielding effectiveness (41 dB, >99.99% attenuation) was achieved with the addition of 50 wt% of Ni40Co60 alloy and 3 wt% CNTs. Intriguingly, due to the unique processing technique adopted here, the flexibility of the composites was retained and more interestingly, the composites were resistant to corrosion as compared to only Ni-Co alloy.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are completely miscible below 50 wt % PVDF in the blends. In this work, an attempt was made to understand the fragility/cooperativity relation in glass-forming and crystalline blends of PVDF/PMMA and in the presence of a heteronucleating agent, multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Hence, three representative blends were chosen: a completely amorphous (10/90 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), on the verge of amorphous miscibility (50/50 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), and crystalline (60/40 by wt, PVDF/PMMA) blends. The intermolecular cooperativity/coupling, fragility, and configurational entropy near the glass transition temperature (T-g) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). It was observed that the blends with higher concentration of PMMA were more fragile (fragility index m = 141) and those with higher concentration of PVDF were more strong (m = 78). Interestingly, the coupling was less in the glass-forming blends (10/90 by wt, PVDF/PMMA) than the crystalline blends as manifested from DRS. This observation was also supported by DSC measurements which reflected that the cooperative rearranging region (CRR) existed over a smaller length scales in fragile blends as compared to strong blends, possibly due to restricted amorphous mobility. This effect was more prominent in the presence of CNTs, in particular for 50/50 (by wt) and 60/40 (by wt) PVDF/PMMA blends. Further, the configurational entropy, as manifested from DRS, decreased significantly in the strong blends in striking contrast to the fragile blends, supported by DSC, which manifested in an increase in the volume of cooperativity in the strong blends. The higher coupling in the crystalline blends can be attributed to good packing of the amorphous regions. While this is understood for crystalline blends (60/40 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), it is envisaged that enhanced dynamic heterogeneity is accountable for increased coupling in the case of blends which are on the verge of amorphous miscibility (50/50 by wt, PVDF/PMMA). The latter is also supported by broad relaxations near the T-g in DRS. Interestingly, the intermolecular coupling in the blends in the presence of CNTs has reduced, though the potential energy barrier hindering the rearrangement of CRR is lower than the blends without CNTs. In addition, the amorphous packing is not as effective as the blends without CNTs. This is manifested from reduced volume of cooperativity in particular, for 50/50 (by wt) and 60/40 (by wt) blends.

The mechanisms of densification and creep were examined during spark plasma sintering (SPS) of alumina doped with a low and high level of zirconia or yttria, over a temperature range of 1173-1573 K and stresses between 25 and 100 MPa. Large additions of yttria led clearly to in situ reactions during SPS and the formation of a yttrium-aluminum garnet phase. Dopants generally lead to a reduction in the densification rate, with substantial reductions noted in samples with similar to 5.5 vol% second phase. In contrast to a stress exponent of n similar to 1 for pure alumina, the doped aluminas displayed n similar to 2 corresponding to an interface-controlled diffusion process. The higher activation energies in the composites are consistent with previous data on creep and changes in the interfacial energies. The results reveal a compensation effect, such that an increase in the activation energy is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the pre-exponential term for diffusion.

This paper reports microwave spectroscopic and theoretical investigations on the interaction of water with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The HFIP monomer can exist in two conformations, antiperiplanar (AP) and synclinical (SC). The former is about 5 kJ mol(-1) more stable than the latter. Theoretical calculations predicted three potential minima for the complex, two having AP and one having SC conformations. Though, the binding energy for the HFIP(SC)...H2O turned out to be larger than that for the other two conformers having HFIP in the AP form, the global minimum for the complex in the potential energy hypersurface had HFIP in the AP form. Experimental rotational constants for four isotopologues measured using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer, correspond to the global minimum in the potential energy hypersurface. The structural parameters and the internal dynamics of the complex could be determined from the rotational spectra of the four isotopologues. The global minimum has the HFIP(AP) as a hydrogen bond donor forming a strong hydrogen bond with H2O. To characterize the strength of the bonding and to probe the other interactions within the complex, atoms in molecules, non-covalent interaction index and natural bond orbital theoretical analyses have been performed.

Yttria stabilized zirconia thin films have been deposited by RF plasma enhanced MOCVD technique on silicon substrates at substrate temperature of 400 degrees C. Plasma of precursor vapors of (2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) yttrium (known as Y(tod)(3)), (2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) zirconium (known as Zr(tod)(4)), oxygen and argon gases is used for deposition. To the best of our knowledge, plasma assisted MOCVD of YSZ films using octanediaonate precursors have not been reported in the literature so far. The deposited films have been characterized by GIXRD, FTIR, XPS, FESEM, AFM, XANES, EXAFS, EDAX and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Thickness of the films has been measured by stylus profilometer while tribological property measurement has been done to study mechanical behavior of the coatings. Characterization by different techniques indicates that properties of the films are dependent on the yttria content as well as on the structure of the films. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
