A study of the voltammetric behaviour of the food colours brilliant blue FCF (C.I. 42090), erythrosine (C. I. 45430) and quinolin e yellow (C. I. 47005) in the pH range 2-10 have been carried out by cathodic stripping voltammetry. At pH 4.5 (acetate buffer) with an accumulation potential of 0 V and accumulation time of 30 s, the voltammograms presented well-defined reduction peaks at potential - 0.76 V for brilliant blue FCF, - 0.85 V for quinoline yellow and - 0.54 V for erythrosine. Linear calibration graphs were obtained from 8 to 80 mug l(-1) brilliant blue, from 4 to 43 mug l(-1) quinoline yellow and from 10 to 70 mug l(-1) erythrosine. The method has been successfully applied to identify and quantify binary mixtures of these dyes and applied for determining brilliant blue FCF in commercial food products.

A flow-injection spectrophotometric procedure is proposed for methyldopa determination in pharmaceutical preparations. The determination is based on formation of a yellow product (measured at 410 nm) after complexation of methyldopa with molybdate. Under optimal conditions, Beer's law is obeyed in a concentration range of 50-200 mg l(-1) methyldopa. Typical correlation between absorbance and analyte concentration was 0.9999. Usual excipients used as additives in pharmaceuticals do not interfere with the proposed method. The analytical frequency was 210 h(-1) and the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) was <= 2% for sample solution containing 150 mg l(-1) methyldopa (n = 11). The analytical results obtained in commercial formulations by applying the proposed FIA method were in good agreement with labeled values and those obtained by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia procedure at 95% confidence level. SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Sorption isotherms of lemon juice (LE) powders with and without additives-18% maltodextrin (MA) or 18% gum Arabic (GA) were determined at 20-50 degrees C. Addition of additives was shown to affect the isotherms in such a way that, at the same water activity, samples LE + GA and LE + MA presented lower equilibrium moisture content and were not so affected by varying temperature. The net isosteric heats of sorption of juice powders with additives were higher (less negative) than those of lemon juice powders, suggesting that there are more active polar sites in the product without addition of GA or MA. In general, the quality properties decreased with the addition of maltodextrin and gum arabic and it was obtained similar values for LE + GA and LE + MA.

Structural and electrical properties of ZnO varistors were investigated as a function of spinel composition. Six varistor mixtures differing only in chemical composition of spinel, were prepared by mixing separately synthesized constituent phases (DSCP method). Compositions of constituent phases in sintered samples were investigated by changes of lattice parameters of the phases, as well as by EDS analysis of the constituent phases. It was found that compositions of ZnO, intergranular and spinel phases were partially changed during sintering due to redistribution of additives, that was controlled by starting spinel composition and its stability. Electrical characterization showed significant difference in electrical properties of investigated varistors: nonlinearity coefficients ranging from 22 to 55 and leakage currents differing by the order of magnitude. Activation energies of conduction were obtained from ac impedance spectroscopy measurements. Calculated values of activation energies were in the range 0.61-1.0 eV confirming difference in defect structure of ZnO grain boundaries in varistors containing different spinel phases. The foundry sand agglomerated with alkaline phenolic resin, used for the manufacture of molds, was found to be a residue which is able to be recycled, minimizing the costs of disposal and the environmental impact. This paper analyzes the thermomechanical regeneration and leaching processes and also assesses the influence of additives on the improvement of the mechanical properties of the sands. Besides, the industrial experiments carried out at CSN aiming at the foundry sand recycling in the covering of the blast furnace troughs are presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Suspensions of undoped SnO2 nanoparticles and containing Eu3+ ions were prepared by a sol-gel procedure. Using the classical synthesis method ( precipitation), the particles tend to grow by a coarsening process in order to minimize the surface free energy. This effect can strongly be reduced by the addition of an amide and surfactant during the synthesis, which decreases the surface free energy of the colloidal particles. These additives promote the formation of powders composed of very small primary particles formed by a crystallite of 10 Angstrom, and exhibit good redispersion properties. The local and long order structures of the redispersible powder were studied by X-rays absorption spectroscopy at Sn L-I edge and X-rays diffraction, respectively. The structure of the colloidal aggregates in suspension was investigated by small angle X-rays scattering (SAXS). SAXS results indicate the sol are composed by a polidisperse system of hard spheres resulting of agglomeration of the primary particles and their size increasing by agglomeration for progressively higher Eu3+ content.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of combined and single monensin and niacin on the productive performance of crossbred young bulls (european/zebu) aged 11 months and initial average liveweight of 248 kg. The experimental design was a factorial randomized arrangement. The treatments were: T1-check, T2-niacin, T3-monensin and T4-niacin+monensin. All the treatments were isoproteic (11 %CP) and isoenergetic (78% TDN), composed of 57.3% roughage and 42.7% concentrate (soybean meal, maize, minerals and buffer). Data was collected over a period of 85 days, with liveweight measured every 28 days. It was conclued that, for this diet, the single supplementation of niacin does not increase the performance of bulls, and therefor it is not recommended. However, the ionophore monensin, single or on in combination with niacin, improves the performance of the animals up to 56 days of feedlot.

Variations on the microstructure development and on the electrical properties of SnO2-based varistors are discussed on the basis of the oxygen vacancies created or annihilated by the presence of different additives. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis of sintered samples evidenced a substantial increase in the paramagnetic oxygen vacancies concentration when Nb2O5 is added to the SnO2 center dot Co3O4 system. on the other hand, the observed diminution in the concentration of such species after the addition of Fe2O3 indicates solid solution formation. The quantification of paramagnetic oxygen vacancies allowed to confirm the proposed substitutions taking place in the lattice during sintering. These findings are supported by scanning electron microscopy, by density measurements and by current density versus electric field curves. The characterization of secondary phases through EDS assisted SEM and TEM is also reported in this work.

SnO2-based varistors doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. Experimental evidence shows that the increase in ZnO amount increases the volume and microstrain of unit cell while the WO3 promotes a decrease. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation in the grain boundary without influence in the densification of the samples. Besides that, an increase in the electrical resistance of the SnO2-ZnO-WO3 system was observed independent of the WO3 concentration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Herein we report the synthesis and properties of Fe55Pt45 nanoparticles, both monodisperse and self-assembled into hexagonal close-packed and cubic arrays of 4.0 +/- 0.2 nm size in an L1(0) structure, obtained by a modified polyol process. The new synthetic route improved the control over the particle composition, thereby reducing the temperature required to convert from face-centered cubic (fcc) to face-centered tetragonal (fct) phase by some 30-50 degrees C without additives. Annealing at 550 degrees C for 30 min converts the self-assembled nanoparticles into ferromagnetic nanocrystals with large coercivity, H-C = 11.1 kOe. Reducing the fcc-to-fct (L1(0)) ordering temperature avoided particle coalescence and decreased the loss in particle positional order without compromising the magnetic properties, as is generally observed when additives are used.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to study the heterogeneities found in the microstructure of (SnO2Co3O4Nb2O5Fe2O3)-Co-.-Nb-.-Fe-. and (SnO2ZnONb2O5FC2O3)-Zn-.-Nb-.-F-. varistors. Second phases encountered both inside the grains and ingrain boundary regions were identified using energy dispersive spectrometry and electron diffraction patterns. Through the electrical characterisation, the presence of iron oxide among the additives was determined to highlight the non-linear properties of the specimens. A discussion on the influence of second phases on the non-linear features of these systems is also addressed. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
