Con el propósito de analizar los cambios de la fuerza máxima explosiva en relación a la ejecución de series de salto vertical repetido (SVR) con periodos cortos de recuperación pasiva en jugadores de baloncesto, se evaluaron 12 deportistas en un protocolo de cuatro series (S) de 15-s de saltos verticales con 10-s de recuperación entre S. Se midieron la altura de salto inicial (ASI) y final (ASF) de cada S; se utilizó ANOVA de una vía con post hoc de Bonferroni para el análisis de las diferencias ASF-ASI por S y una prueba t de Student para analizar el índice de fatiga (IF) por serie. Se encontró que la diferencia ASF-ASI fue progresivamente incremental desde la S1 hasta la S4 (-2,8 6,2 cm, -6,8 4,9 cm, -8,4 5,6 cm y -9,3 5,9 cm, respectivamente), aunque la diferencia fue mayor solo en S4 con respecto a S1 (p=0,014). Es posible que los períodos de recuperación entre cada S influyeron en el mantenimiento de la fuerza muscular explosiva (FME) durante los primeros 45-s de saltos, sin embargo, la suma de estas ejecuciones generó un aumento de la fatiga al final de la prueba. La FME puede ser afectada por la suma de ejecuciones de SVR aun con la inclusión de períodos cortos de recuperación entre series. La relación trabajo-recuperación en baloncesto es un factor que debe considerarse para planificar el entrenamiento en jugadores de baloncesto.

The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of endurance exercise on jumping and kicking performance in young soccer players. Twenty-one top-class young soccer players (16.1±0.2 years) performed a countermovement jump test and a maximal instep soccer kick test before and after running for 20 min on a treadmill at 80% of their individual maximum heart rate. Two force platforms were used to obtain the following parameters during the countermovement jump: jump height, maximum power, maximum power relative to body mass, maximum vertical ground reaction force, maximum vertical ground reaction force relative to body mass, and maximum vertical ground reaction force applied to each leg. Maximum vertical ground reaction force and maximum vertical ground reaction force relative to body mass applied to the support leg during the kicks were also calculated with a force platform. The kicking motion was recorded using a three-dimensional motion-capture system. Maximum velocity of the ball, maximum linear velocity of the toe, ankle, knee and hip, and linear velocity of the toe at ball contact during the kicks were calculated. Non-significant differences were found in the parameters measured during the countermovement jump and the maximal instep soccer kick test before and after running, suggesting that the jumping and kicking performances of top-class young soccer players were not significantly affected after 20 min treadmill running at 80% of their individual maximum heart rate.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on consecutive "all out" sprint tests, analyzing the acid-base status and its influence on performance and perceived effort. Ten elite bicycle motocross (BMX) riders (20.7 ± 1.4 years, training experience 8-12 years) participated in this study which consisted of two trials. Each trial consisted of three consecutive Wingate tests (WTs) separated by 15 min recovery. Ninety minutes prior to exercise subjects ingested either NaHCO(3) (-) (0.3 g kg(-1) body weight) or placebo. Blood samples were collected for the assessment of blood acid-base status: bicarbonate concentration ([HCO(3) (-)]), pH, base excess (BE) and blood lactate concentration ([La(-)]). Performance variables of peak power (PP), mean power (MP), time to peak power and fatigue index were calculated for each sprint. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in acid-base variables [pH before WT1: 7.47 ± 0.05 vs. 7.41 ± 0.03; [HCO(3) (-)] before WT1: 29.08 ± 2.27 vs. 22.85 ± 0.24 mmol L(-1) (bicarbonate vs. placebo conditions, respectively)], but there were not significant differences in performance variables between trials [PP WT1: 1,610 ± 373 vs. 1,599 ± 370 W; PP WT2: 1,548 ± 460 vs. 1,570 ± 428 W; PP WT3: 1,463 ± 361 vs. 1,519 ± 364 W. MP WT1: 809 ± 113 vs. 812 ± 108 W; MP WT2: 799 ± 135 vs. 799 ± 124 W; MP WT3: 762 ± 165 vs. 782 ± 118 W (bicarbonate vs. placebo conditions, respectively)]. Rating of perceived effort (RPE) was not influenced nor ratings of perceived readiness. Sodium bicarbonate ingestion modified significantly the blood acid-base balance, although the induced alkalosis did not improve the Wingate test performance, RPE and perceived readiness across three consecutive WTs in elite BMX cyclists.

La presente tesis analiza el efecto del ejercicio físico agudo y la hidratación sobre las concentraciones de homocisteína total (tHcy) y su relación con los parámetros implicados en el metabolismo de la homocisteína como el folato, la vitamina B12, y la creatina en una muestra de varones jóvenes físicamente activos. El trabajo se basa en los resultados del estudio realizado en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Para el cual se contó con un total de 29 voluntarios sanos físicamente activos de la Comunidad de Madrid. Los principales resultados de esta tesis son: a) Las concentraciones de tHcy aumentaron después del ejercicio agudo tanto tras una prueba de intensidad máxima (VO2max) como una submáxima (65 % of VO2max) en varones físicamente activos independientemente de las sus concentraciones basales de tHcy. b) Las concentraciones de tHcy disminuyeron 2 h después del ejercicio físico aeróbico submáximo tras aplicar un protocolo de hidratación con una bebida para deportistas. c) Un adecuado protocolo de hidratación durante el ejercicio físico agudo previno el aumento de las concentraciones de tHcy hasta 2 h después del ejercicio. d) Las concentraciones de tHcy aumentaron a las 6 h tras la finalización del ejercicio únicamente en los test en los que no se siguió un protocolo de hidratación durante el ejercicio físico. e) A las 24 h tras el ejercicio, las concentraciones de tHcy volvieron a los niveles basales independientemente de si se aplicó un protocolo de hidratación durante el ejercicio o no. f) Es necesario aclarar si existen mecanismos subyacentes relacionados con el riesgo cardiovascular debido al aumento transitorio de las concentraciones de tHcy inducidas por el ejercicio agudo. Se necesitan más estudios que analicen la relación entre las concentraciones de tHcy después del ejercicio físico agudo y la implicación de la creatina, vitamina B12 y folato como parámetros relacionados en el metabolismo de la homocisteína. El efecto agudo del ejercicio físico aumenta las concentraciones de tHcy por encima de los valores recomendados; sin embargo, un adecuado protocolo de hidratación mantiene las concentraciones a niveles basales y previene el posterior aumento en una muestra de varones adultos físicamente activos. ABSTRACT The current thesis analyzes the effect of exercise and hydration on total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations and the relationship with the implicated parameters, like folate, vitamin B12, and creatine in physically active male adults. The work is based on the results of the study conducted at the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences of the Technical University of Madrid. A total of 29 physically active voluntary healthy males from the Region of Madrid were recruited. The main outcomes of this thesis are: a) tHcy concentrations increased after acute exercise with both, maximal (VO2max) and submaximal (65 % of VO2max) tests in physically active male subjects independently of their baseline tHcy status. b) After 2 h of rehydration with a sport drink, tHcy concentrations, which had previously increased during an acute exercise, decreased significantly, although they didn´t recover to baseline values. c) An adequate hydration protocol during acute aerobic submaximal exercise prevents the increase of tHcy concentrations and maintains these concentrations at baseline up to 2 h post-exercise. d) Serum tHcy concentrations increased after submaximal exercise when the hydration protocol during exercise was not applied. Furthermore, tHcy concentrations reached maximal values 6 h after the end of exercise. e) At 24 h, tHcy concentrations recovered baseline values independently whether or not there was a hydration protocol during exercise. f) There is a need to clarify the underlying mechanisms related to cardiovascular risk due to the transient increase of tHcy concentrations induced by acute exercise. Further research analayzing the relationship between tHcy concentrations after acute exercise and the implication of creatine, vitamin B12 and folate as related parameters in the homocysteine metabolism is needed. Finally, tHcy concentrations increased above the recommended values after an acute aerobic submaximal exercise; nevertheless, a good hydration protocol maintains tHcy concentrations at baseline and prevents the further increase in a sample of physically active male adults.

Although the study of factors affecting career success has shown connections between biographical and other aspects related to ability, knowledge and personality, few studies have examined the relationship be-tween emotional intelligence and professional success at the initial career stage. When these studies were carried out, the results showed significant relationships between the dimensions of emotional intelligence (emotional self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness or social skills) and the level of professional competence. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence, measured by the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) questionnaire, general intelligence assessed by the Cattell factor "g" test, scale 3, and extrinsic indicators of career success, in a sample of 130 graduates at the beginning of their careers. Results from hierarchical regression analysis indicate that emotional intelligence makes a specific contribution to the prediction of salary, after controlling the general intelligence effect. The perceived emotional intelligence dimensions of TMMS repair, TMMS attention and sex show a higher correlation and make a greater contribution to professional success than general intelligence. The implications of these results for the development of socio-emotional skills among University graduates are discussed.

From the Introduction. With the results of its asset quality review (AQR), to be published on 26 October 2014, the European Central Bank intends to provide clarity on the shape of the 120 banks it will supervise in the eurozone, and it may request a series of follow-up actions before assuming its new set of tasks under the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) Regulation in November. On the same day, the European Banking Authority (EBA) will also be publishing the results of its stress test, covering 123 banks across 22 European Economic Area (EEA) countries. For the ECB, it will be a matter of setting the standard for its future task, whereas EBA, seeks to restore the confidence it lost in the 2011 stress test and 2012 capital exercise. Both institutions will need to indicate how they will cooperate in the future in these tasks, and through enhanced disclosure, strengthen the confidence in the European banking system.

At a time of crisis – a true state of emergency – both the Court of Justice of the European Union and the German Federal Constitutional Court have failed the rule of law in Europe. Worse still, in their evaluation of the ersatz crisis law, which has been developed in response to financial and sovereign debt crises, both courts have undermined constitutionality throughout Europe. Each jurisdiction has been implicated within the techocratisation of democratic process. Each Court has contributed to an incremental process of the undermining of the political subjectivity of European Citizens. The results are depressing for lawyers who are still attached to notions of constitutionality. Yet, we must also ask whether the Courts could have acted otherwise. Given the original flaws in the construction of Economic and Monetary Union, as well as the politically pre-emptive constraints imposed by global financial markets, each Court might thus be argued to have been forced to suspend immediate legality in a longer term effort to secure the character of the legal jurisdiction as a whole. Crisis can and does defeat the law. Nevertheless, what continues to disturb is the failure of law in Europe to open up any perspective for a return to normal constitutionality post crisis, as well as its apparent inability to give proper and honest consideration to the hardship now being experienced by millions of Europeans within crisis. This contribution accordingly seeks to reimagine each Judgment in a language of legal honesty. Above all, this contribution seeks to suggest a new form of post-national constitutional language; a language which takes as its primary function, proper protection of democratic process against the ever encroaching powers of a post-national executive power. This contribution forms a part of an on-going effort to identify a new basis for the legitimacy of European Law, conducted jointly and severally with Christian Joerges, University of Bremen and Hertie School of Government, Berlin. Differences do remain in our theoretical positions; hence this individual essay. Nevertheless, the congruence between pluralist and conflict of law approaches to the topic are also readily apparent. Este estudo teve como objetivos verificar a validade fatorial e a validade interna da versão brasileira do Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2) e comparar os principais motivos para prática de exercício tendo em conta os contextos de academia e personal training. Um total de 588 praticantes de exercício da cidade de Pelotas/RS/Brasil (405 de academia e 183 de personal training) preencheram o EMI-2, o qual é constituído por 51 itens, agrupados em 14 motivos (fatores) para prática de exercício físico. A validade fatorial do EMI-2 foi testada através da realização de análises fatoriais confirmatórias e a validade interna através do alfa de Cronbach. Para a verificar o efeito do contexto nos motivos foi utilizada a MANOVA e calculado o tamanho do efeito. Os resultados obtidos dão suporte à estrutura original do EMI-2 com 14 fatores, nesta amostra. Verificou-se um efeito multivariado significativo do contexto sobre os motivos de prática [Wilks’ λ = 0.912, F (14, 573.000) = 3.9, p < 0.001, η² = 0.088]. Os motivos de “Prazer”, “Força e resistência”, “Desafio”, “Socialização”, “Competição” e “Reconhecimento Social” foram significativamente superiores no contexto de academia e os motivos de “Agilidade” e “Prevenção de Doenças” foram significativamente superiores no contexto de personal training.

Endurance exercise is widely assumed to improve cardiac function in humans. This project has determined cardiac function following endurance exercise for 6 (n = 30) or 12 ( n = 25) weeks in male Wistar rats (8 weeks old). The exercise protocol was 30 min/day at 0.8 km/h for 5 days/week with an endurance test on the 6th day by running at 1.2 km/h until exhaustion. Exercise endurance increased by 318% after 6 weeks and 609% after 12 weeks. Heart weight/kg body weight increased by 10.2% after 6 weeks and 24.1% after 12 weeks. Echocardiography after 12 weeks showed increases in left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (6.39 +/- 0.32 to 7.90 +/- 0.17 mm), systolic volume (49 +/- 7 to 83 +/- 11 mul) and cardiac output (75 +/- 3 to 107 +/- 8 ml/min) but not left wall thickness in diastole (1.74 +/- 0.07 to 1.80 +/- 0.06 mm). Isolated Langendorff hearts from trained rats displayed decreased left ventricular myocardial stiffness (22 +/- 1.1 to 19.1 +/- 0.3) and reduced purine efflux during pacing-induced workload increases. P-31-NMR spectroscopy in isolated hearts from trained rats showed decreased PCr and PCr/ATP ratios with increased creatine, AMP and ADP concentrations. Thus, this endurance exercise protocol resulted in physiological hypertrophy while maintaining or improving cardiac function.

Background and Objectives: This pilot project assessed the acceptability of a mixed-type, moderate-intensity exercise programme following breast cancer treatment, and the impact on presence of lymphoedema, fitness, body composition, fatigue, mood and quality of life. Methods: Ten women completed the programme and measures of fitness (submaximal ergometer test), body composition (bio-electrical impedance), lympoedema (bio-electrical impedance and arm circumferences), fatigue (revised Piper Fatigue Scale), mood (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), quality of life (FACT-B) and general well-being, at baseline, completion of the programme, and 6-week and 3-month follow-up. Results: Participation in the programme caused no adverse effect on the presence of lymphoedema. There was a trend towards reduction in fatigue and improved quality of life across the testing phases. Women rated the programme extremely favourably, citing benefits of the support of other women, trained guidance, and the opportunity to experience different types of exercise. Conclusions: A mixed-type, moderate-intensity exercise program in a group format is acceptable to women following breast cancer treatment, with the potential to reduce fatigue and improve quality of life, without exacerbating or precipitating lymphoedema. In order to examine the influence of sprint training on metabolism and exercise performance during sprint exercise, 16 recreationally-active, untrained, men (TO2peak= 3.8+/-0.1 1.min(-1)) were randomly assigned to either a training (n=8) or control group (n=8). Each subject performed a 30-sec cycle sprint and a test to measure VO2peak before and after eight weeks of sprint training. The training group completed a series of sprints three times per week which progressed from three 30-sec cycle sprints in weeks 1 and 2, to six 30-sec sprints in weeks 7 and 8. Three mins of passive recovery separated each sprint throughout the training period. Muscle samples were obtained at rest and immediately following the pre- and post-training sprints and analysed for high energy phosphagens, glycogen and lactate; the activities of both phosphofructokinase (PFK) and citrate synthase (CS) were also measured and muscle fibre types were quantified, Training resulted in a 7.1% increase in mean power output (p

OBJECTIVES We sought to determine if a hypertensive response to exercise (HRE) is associated with myocardial changes consistent with early hypertensive heart disease. BACKGROUND An HRE predicts the development of chronic hypertension (HT) and may reflect a preclinical stage of HT. METHODS Patients with a normal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction and a negative stress test were recruited into three matched groups: 41 patients (age 56 +/- 10 years) with HRE (210/105 mm Hg in men; > 190/105 in women), comprising 22 patients with (HT+) and 19 without resting hypertension (HT-); and 17 matched control subjects without HRE. Long-axis function was determined by measurement of the strain rate (SR), peak systolic strain, and cyclic variation (CV) of integrated backscatter in three apical views. RESULTS An HRE was not associated with significant differences in LV mass index. Exercise performance and diastolic function were reduced in HRE(HT+) patients, but similar in HRE(HT-) patients and controls. Systolic dysfunction (peak systolic strain, SR, and CV) was significantly reduced in HRE patients (p < 0.001 for all). These reductions were equally apparent in patients with and without a history of resting HT (p = NS) and were independent of LV mass index and blood pressure (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS An HRE is associated with subtle systolic dysfunction, even in the absence of resting HT. These changes occur before the development of LV hypertrophy or detectable diastolic dysfunction and likely represent early hypertensive heart disease. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of undertaking peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBST) on quality of life (QoL), and to determine the effect of participating in a mixed-type, moderate-intensity exercise program on QoL. It was also an objective to determine the relationship between peak aerobic capacity and QoL in PBST patients. QoL was assessed via the CARES questionnaire and peak aerobic capacity by a maximal graded treadmill test, pretransplant (PI), post transplant (PII) and following a 12-week intervention period (PIII). At PII, 12 patients were divided equally into a control or exercise intervention group. Undergoing a PBST was associated with a statistically but not clinically significant decline in QoL (P < 0.05). Following the intervention, exercising patients demonstrated an improved QoL when compared with pretransplant ratings (P < 0.01) and nonexercising transplant patients (P < 0.05). Moreover, peak aerobic capacity and QoL were correlated (P < 0.05). The findings demonstrated that exercise participation following oncology treatment is associated with a reduction in the number and severity of endorsed problems, which in turn leads to improvements in global, physical and psychosocial QoL. Furthermore, a relationship between fitness and QoL exists, with those experiencing higher levels of fitness also demonstrating higher QoL.
