A novel kind of K+ sensor with valinomycin-incorporated bilayers supported on a gold electrode consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers (SAMs) and a lipid monolayer has been fabricated successfully. The lipid monolayer is deposited on the alkylated surface of the first alkanethiol monolayer through three different methods, such as the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, painted method and painted-frozen method. The response of K + sensors produced by a painted or painted-frozen lipid monolayer on an alkanethiol alkylated gold electrode is larger than that by the LB method, which is due to the difference in fluidity of the three kinds of bilayers. Selectivity coefficients KK+, Na+, KK+, Li+, KK+, Ca2+ and KK+, Mg2+ are 10(-4), 10(-4), 2 x 10(-5) and 3 x 10(-5) respectively, and there is no obvious difference among different fabricating methods. A linear response toward the potassium ion was found in the range from 10(-1) M to 10(-5) M with the detection limit of 10(-6) M. The sensor has a slope of 60 mV per decade. Meanwhile, the longevity of the sensor was improved obviously for at least two months at about -10 degrees C. The higher stability shows the possibility to fabricate a practical biosensor.

Active carbon supported copper oxides were used in NO reduction. The conversions of NO reduction depends strongly on surface oxygen-containing groups on the active carbons, among them the carboxyls and lactones favored remarkably the NO reduction. However, hydrochloric acid treatment led to the decomposition of the carboxyls and lactones on C2 and C3, decreasing their reactivities for NO reduction. Concentrated HNO3 treatment of active carbon produced higher conversions of NO reduction at relatively low temperatures due to the marked increase in the amounts of the carboxyls and lactones.

Supported lipid membranes consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol and lipid monolayers on gold substrates could be produced by three different deposition methods: the Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) technique, the painted method, and the paint-freeze method, By using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry/chronocoulometry and a.c. impedance measurements, we demonstrated that lipid membranes prepared by these three deposition methods had obvious differences in specific capacitance, resistance and thickness. The specific capacitance of lipid membranes prepared by depositing an L-B monolayer on the alkanethiol alkylated surfaces was 0.53 mu Fcm(-2), 0.44 mu Fcm(-2) by the painted method and 0.68 mu Fcm(-2) by the paint-freeze method. The specific conductivity of lipid membranes prepared by the L-B method was over three times lower than that of the painted lipid membranes, while that of the paint-freeze method was the lowest. The difference among the three types of lipid membranes was ascribed to the influence of the organic solvent in lipid films and the changes in density of the films. The lipid membranes prepared by the usual painted method contained a trace amount of the organic solvent. The organic solvent existing in the hydrocarbon core of the membrane reduced the density of the membrane and increased the thickness of the membrane. The membrane prepared by depositing an L-B monolayer containing no solvent had higher density and the lowest fluidity, and the thickness of the membrane was smaller. The lipid membrane prepared by the paint-freeze method changed its structure sharply at the lower temperature. The organic solvent was frozen out of the membrane while the density of the membrane increased greatly. All these caused the membrane to exist in a ''tilted'' state and the thickness of this membrane was the smallest. The lipid membrane produced by the paint-freeze method was a membrane not containing organic solvent. This method was easier in manipulation and had better reproducibility than that of the usual painting method and the method of forming free-standing lipid film. The solvent-free membrane had a long lifetime and a higher mechanical stability. This model membrane would be useful in many areas of scientific research.

Heteropolyacids (HPAs) possess both acidic and redox catalytic properties and held extensive promise of practical application. These type of compound display a great potential of specific synthesis reactions for replacing sulfuric acid to satisfy the requirements of environmental protection. Heterogenizing HPAs would not only make them more useful in liquid phase oxidation with oxygen and in acid-catalyzed reaction, as the catalyst is often difficult to separate from the reaction products, but also create favorable factors for realizing heterogenization of homogeneous reaction and even utilizing new technology of catalytic distillation. In this paper, different kinds of porous materials which are well characterized, including oxides such as Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, diatomite, bentonite, and active carbon of different sources, were used as support for heterogenizing HPAs (in different media), and the obtained results, the intrinsic characters of supports which may influence both the nature of the interaction between HPAs and supports in the heterogenization and the activity in the catalytic reaction, are explored. It is expected that these can provide a referential model for preparing supported acid catalyst used in liquid phase.

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PSAm)-titanium complexes (PSAm . Ti) were prepared and characterized. It is found that the coordination number of acrylamide (Am) to Ti in the complexes is strongly dependent on Am content in PSAm, but not on [Am]/[Ti] ratio in the feed. The infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that the polymer-supported complexes possess the structure [GRAPHICS] The catalytic behavior of the complexes in styrene polymerization is described. The catalytic activity is markedly affected by [Al]/[Ti] ratio in the complexes. C-13 NMR, IR, and DSC data indicate that the polystyrene obtained with PSAm . Ti/MAO (MAO = methylaluminoxane) is highly syndiotactic. Use of Et(3)Al and i-Bu(3)Al in place of MAO gives atactic polystyrene. The activities of the various aluminum compounds used as the cocatalysts decrease in the order: MAO > Et(3)Al > i-Bu(3)Al. The polymer-supported complexes show relatively high activity even after the complexes had been exposed to air for 19 h or higher polymerization temperature. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The polymers containing different ligand groups of atoms (mainly O, N, and S) and their rare earth complexes were prepared, characterized and classified based on the type of metal-ligand tending. The catalytic activities of the complexes are briefly discussed. The polymer-supported rare earth complexes showed much greater activities than the corresponding complexes with a low molecular weight.

Poly(styrene-acrylic acid)-lanthanide (Ln.PSAA) and poly(ethylene-acrylic acid)-neodymium (NdPEAA) complexes have been prepared and characterized. The infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the lanthanide complexes possess the bidentate carboxylate structure Ln-O-C(R)-O (see structure B in text). The catalytic behavior of the complexes has been described. The catalytic activities of Nd.PSAA and Nd.PEAA are much greater than that of the corresponding low molecular weight catalyst for butadiene polymerization. The activities of various individual lanthanide elements are quite different from one another. Neodymium shows the highest activity. Europium, samarium and the heavy elements exhibit very low or no activities. The cis-1,4 content of the polybutadiene obtained is not affected by different lanthanide elements in the series. The complex with the intermediate content of the functional group has a higher activity than the others. The polymer-supported lanthanide complexes having different constitutions have different catalytic activities. When the molar ratio of lanthanide to the functional group is ca. 0.2, the activity of the complex is in the optimum state. The activity is influenced by the dispersion of the lanthanide metal immobilized on the polymer chain. Catalytic activity can be improved by adding other metals to the catalyst system.

This paper describes the roles of silica (SiO2), the butoxy ligand (-OBu) and ethyl benzoate (EB) on ethylene/1-butene copolymerization with MgCl2/SiO2-supported titanium catalysts. The distribution of SiO2 and of the elements Mg and Ti was observed by means of an energy-dispersed X-ray microanalyzer on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). An inversed Si/Mg ratio results, at invariant Ti/Mg ratio and -OBu content, in higher catalyst efficiency and higher comonomer incorporation, with a correspondingly decreased crystallinity of the copolymers. Thus, the inert carrier SiO2 favors copolymerizability, as seen from the values of the reactivity ratios. The copolymer compositional distribution is also affected by the SiO2 content, as seen from the DSC curves of the copolymers. As to the copolymer morphology, addition of SiO2 makes the copolymer particles larger and more uniform.

The polymer-supported bimetallic catalyst FVP-PdCl2-2CuCl(2) (PVP, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), obtained in situ by the addition of CuCl2 to an alcoholic solution of PVP-PdCl2, exhibits high selectivity and activity for the oxidative carbonylation of aniline with carbon monoxide and oxygen to ethyl N-phenylcarbamate in the presence of a base (NaOAc) under atmospheric pressure. The strong synergic effect of Pd-Cu gives rise to a clear increase in the selectivity and activity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
