Gd2O3:Eu3+ (4 mol%) nanophosphor co-doped with Li+ ions have been synthesized by low-temperature solution combustion technique in a short time. Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-VIS and photoluminescence (PL) techniques have been employed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. It is found that the lattice of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor transforms from monoclinic to cubic as the Li+-ions are doped. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor showed characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 0-4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 626 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) of Eu3+ ions was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 595 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). Furthermore, the effects of the Li+ co-doping as well as calcinations temperature on the PL properties have been studied. The results show that incorporation of Li+ ions in Gd2O3:Eu3+ lattice could induce a remarkable improvement of their PL intensity. The emission intensity was observed to be enhanced four times than that of with out Li+-doped Gd2O3:Eu3+. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved,

A method to reliably extract object profiles even with height discontinuities (that leads to 2n pi phase jumps) is proposed. This method uses Fourier transform profilometry to extract wrapped phase, and an additional image formed by illuminating the object of interest by a novel gray coded pattern for phase unwrapping. Simulation results suggest that the proposed approach not only retains the advantages of the original method, but also contributes significantly in the enhancement of its performance. Fundamental advantage of this method stems from the fact that both extraction of wrapped phase and unwrapping the same were done by gray scale images. Hence, unlike the methods that use colors, proposed method doesn't demand a color CCD camera and is ideal for profiling objects with multiple colors.

Polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple and inexpensive one-step in situ polymerization method in the presence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. The structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the samples were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WAXD and SEM revealed the formation of polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that there was some interaction between the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyaniline. The dc electrical conductivity measurements were carried in the temperature range of 80 to 300 K. With increase in the doping concentration of ZnFe2O4, the conductivity of the nanocomposites found to be decreasing from 5.15 to 0.92 Scm(-1) and the temperature dependent resistivity follows ln rho(T) similar to T-1/2 behavior. The nanocomposites (80 wt % of ZnFe2O4) show a more negative magnetoresistance compared with that of pure polyaniline (PANI). These results suggest that the interaction between the polymer matrix PANI and zinc nanoparticles take place in these nanocomposites. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dissolution of barium ion from aqueous suspensions of commercial nano-sized barium titanate powders (BaTiO3) has been studied at various pH values, solids loading, different time intervals and different electrolyte concentrations. Zeta potential measurements at various pH values and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study were also carried out to know the surface behaviour. Dissolution of Ba2+ depends on the suspension pH and stirring time period. The iso-electric points were found at 3.4 and 12.2 for as-received BaTiO3 powder and 2.3 for the leached BaTiO3. The Ba2+-leached BaTiO3 suspension retards further leaching of Ba2+ ions at different pH values, which favours the achievement of stable suspension.

Computerized tomography is an imaging technique which produces cross sectional map of an object from its line integrals. Image reconstruction algorithms require collection of line integrals covering the whole measurement range. However, in many practical situations part of projection data is inaccurately measured or not measured at all. In such incomplete projection data situations, conventional image reconstruction algorithms like the convolution back projection algorithm (CBP) and the Fourier reconstruction algorithm, assuming the projection data to be complete, produce degraded images. In this paper, a multiresolution multiscale modeling using the wavelet transform coefficients of projections is proposed for projection completion. The missing coefficients are then predicted based on these models at each scale followed by inverse wavelet transform to obtain the estimated projection data.

The synthesis of ``smart structured'' conducting polymers and the fabrication of devices using them are important areas of research. However, conducting polymeric materials that are used in devices are susceptible to degradation due to oxygen and moisture. Thus, protection of such devices to ensure long-term stability is always desirable. Polymer nanocomposites are promising materials for the encapsulation of such devices. Therefore, it is important to develop suitable polymer nanocomposites as encapsulation materials to protect such devices. This work presents a technique based on grafting between surface-decorated gamma-alumina nanoparticles and polymer to make nanocomposites that can be used for the encapsulation of devices. Alumina was functionalized with allyltrimethoxysilane and used to conjugate polymer molecules (hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) through a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles after surface modification. The grafting density of alkene groups on the surface of the modified nanoparticles was calculated using CHN and thermogravimetric analyses. The thermal stability of the composites was also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. The nanoindentation technique was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The densities of the composites were evaluated using a density gradient column, and the morphology of the composites was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. All of our studies reveal that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility and, thus, can potentially be used for the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices.

CuO nanowires are synthesized by heating Cu foil, rod and grid in ambient without employing a catalyst or gas flow at temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 degrees C for a duration of 1-12 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation reveals the formation of nanowires. The structure, morphology and phase of the as-synthesized nanowires are analyzed by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is found that these nanowires are composed of CuO phase and the underlying film is of Cu2O. A systematic study is carried out to find the possibilities for the transformation of one phase to another completely. A possible growth mechanism for the nanowires is also discussed. The selenium analogue of antithyroid drug methimazole (MSeI) reacts with molecular bromine to produce two different types of novel complexes depending upon the molar ratio of MSeI to Br-2 in the reaction medium: Dicationic diselenide complex with two Br- ions as counterions is produced in the reaction of MSeI with 0.5 equiv of Br-2 (MSeI/Br-2, 1.0:0.5), whereas a stable 10-Se-3 hypervalent ``T-shaped'' complex featuring a linear Br-Se-Br moiety was produced when MSeI was treated with Br-2 in an equimolar ratio (MSeI/Br-2, 1.0:1.0). A substitution at the free N-H group in MSeI alters its reactivity toward iodine/bromine. For example, the N,N-disubstituted selones exclusively produce the corresponding 10-Se-3 hypervalent ``T-shaped'' complexes in the reaction with I-2. In the presence of the lectoperoxidase/H2O2/I- system, N,N-dimethylimidazole-2-selone produces the corresponding dicationic diselenide with two I- counterions as the final metabolite. The formation of ionic species in these reactions is confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and in some cases by Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopic investigations.

The two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) model is used to determine the absolute entropy and energy of carbon dioxide over a wide range of conditions from molecular dynamics trajectories. The 2PT method determines the thermodynamic properties by applying the proper statistical mechanical partition function to the normal modes of a fluid. The vibrational density of state (DoS), obtained from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function, converges quickly, allowing the free energy, entropy, and other thermodynamic properties to be determined from short 20-ps MD trajectories. The anharmonic effects in the vibrations are accounted for by the broadening of the normal modes into bands from sampling the velocities over the trajectory. The low frequency diffusive modes, which lead to finite DoS at zero frequency, are accounted for by considering the DoS as a superposition of gas-phase and solid-phase components (two phases). The analytical decomposition of the DoS allows for an evaluation of properties contributed by different types of molecular motions. We show that this 2PT analysis leads to accurate predictions of entropy and energy of CO2 over a wide range of conditions (from the triple point to the critical point of both the vapor and the liquid phases along the saturation line). This allows the equation of state of CO2 to be determined, which is limited only by the accuracy of the force field. We also validated that the 2PT entropy agrees with that determined from thermodynamic integration, but 2PT requires only a fraction of the time. A complication for CO2 is that its equilibrium configuration is linear, which would have only two rotational modes, but during the dynamics it is never exactly linear, so that there is a third mode from rotational about the axis. In this work, we show how to treat such linear molecules in the 2PT framework.

A new class of biodegradable copolyesters was synthesized by the catalyst-free melt condensation of sorbitol with citric acid, tartaric acid, and sebacic acid. The resulting polymers were designated as poly(sorbitol citric sebacate) p(SCS)] and poly(sorbitol tartaric sebacate) p(STS)]. The synthesized polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, H-1-NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Porous spongelike scaffolds were prepared with a salt-leaching technique and characterized with scanning electron microscopy. Tensile testing of the p(SCS) and p(STS) polymers showed that they exhibited a wide range of mechanical properties. The Young's modulus and tensile strengths of the polymers ranged from 1.06 +/- 0.12 to 462.65 +/- 34.21 MPa and from 0.45 +/- 0.04 to 20.32 +/- 2.54 MPa, respectively. In vitro degradation studies were performed on disc-shaped polymer samples. The half-life of the polymers ranged from 0.54 to 38.52 days. The percentage hydration of the polymers was in the range 9.36 +/- 1.26 to 78.25 +/- 1.91, with sol contents of 2-14%. At any given polymer composition, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of p(SCS) was higher than that of p(STS), whereas the degradation rates of p(SCS) was lower than that of p(STS). This was attributed to the structural difference between the citric and tartaric monomers and to the degree of crosslinking. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 121: 2861-2869, 2011

Experimental realization of quantum information processing in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been well established. Implementation of conditional phase-shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead to realization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR by using coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of the conditional phase-shift gate using transition selective pulses. As an application of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform by simulations and experiments using transition selective pulses. Adsorption, electrokinetic, microflotation, and flocculation studies have been carried out on sphalerite and galena minerals using extracellular polysaccharides (ECP) isolated from Bacillus polymyxa. The adsorption density of ECP onto galena is found to be higher than that onto sphalerite. The adsorption of ECP onto sphalerite is found to increase from pH 3 to about pH 7, where a maximum is attained, and thereafter continuously decreases. With respect to galena, the adsorption density of ECP steadily increases with increased pH. The addition of ECP correspondingly reduces the negative electrophoretic mobilities of sphalerite and galena in absolute magnitude without shifting their isoelectric points. However, the magnitude of the reduction in the electrophoretic mobility values is found to be greater for galena compared to that for sphalerite. Microflotation tests show that galena is depressed while sphalerite is floated using ECP in the entire pH range investigated. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite corroborate that sphalerite could be floated from galena at pH 9-9.5 using ECP as a depressant for galena. Flocculation tests reveal that in the pH range 9-11, sphalerite is dispersed and galena is flocculated in the presence of ECP. Dissolution tests indicate release of the lattice metal ions from galena and sphalerite, while co-precipitation tests confirm chemical interaction between lead or zinc ions and ECP. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction for the adsorption of ECP onto galena/sphalerite surfaces. The most stable vinyl polyperoxide, namely, poly(indene peroxide) (PINDP), an alternating copolymer of indene and oxygen, was synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of indene. It was characterized by H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR, Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry studies. The overall activation energy for the degradation and the glass-transition temperature of PINDP were 47 kcal/mol and 327 K respectively, which were very high compared to those of other vinyl polyperoxides. A geometrically non-linear Spectral Finite Flement Model (SFEM) including hysteresis, internal friction and viscous dissipation in the material is developed and is used to study non-linear dissipative wave propagation in elementary rod under high amplitude pulse loading. The solution to non-linear dispersive dissipative equation constitutes one of the most difficult problems in contemporary mathematical physics. Although intensive research towards analytical developments are on, a general purpose cumputational discretization technique for complex applications, such as finite element, but with all the features of travelling wave (TW) solutions is not available. The present effort is aimed towards development of such computational framework. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is used for transformation between temporal and frequency domain. SFEM for the associated linear system is used as initial state for vector iteration. General purpose procedure involving matrix computation and frequency domain convolution operators are used and implemented in a finite element code. Convergnence of the spectral residual force vector ensures the solution accuracy. Important conclusions are drawn from the numerical simulations. Future course of developments are highlighted.

A class of I boundary value problems involving propagation of two-dimensional surface water waves, associated with water of uniform finite depth, against a plane vertical wave maker is investigated under the assumption that the surface is covered by a thin sheet of ice. It is assumed that the ice-cover behaves like a thin isotropic elastic plate. Then the problems under consideration lead to those of solving the two-dimensional Laplace equation in a semi-infinite strip, under Neumann boundary conditions on the vertical boundary as well as on one of the horizontal boundaries, representing the bottom of the fluid region, and a condition involving upto fifth order derivatives of the unknown function on the top horizontal ice-covered boundary, along with the two appropriate edge-conditions, at the ice-covered corner, ensuring the uniqueness of the solutions. The mixed boundary value problems are solved completely, by exploiting the regularity property of the Fourier cosine transform.
