A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the photoluminescence properties of SrTiO3 perovskite thin films synthesized through a soft chemical processing. Only the amorphous samples present photoluminescence at room temperature. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (ST-c) and an asymmetric (ST-a) model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of ST is discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the results of visible photoluminescence measurements at room temperature on Sr1-xTiO3-x (ST) perovskite thin films. From the experimental side, ST thin films, x = 0 to 0.9, have been synthesized following soft chemical processing, and the corresponding photoluminescence properties have been measured. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline, stoichiometric (x = 0) ST-s model and a nonstoichiometric (SrO-deficient, x not equal 0) and structurally disordered ST-d model. The relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results of the photoluminescence behavior of ST is discussed. The optical spectra and the calculations indicate that the symmetry-breaking process on going from ST-s to ST-d creates electronic levels in the valence band. Moreover, an analysis of the Mulliken charge distribution reveals a charge gradient in the structure. These combined effects seem to be responsible for the photoluminescence behavior of deficient Sr1-xTiO3-x.

Erbium-activated silica-based planar waveguides were prepared by three different technological routes: RF-sputtering, sol-gel and ion exchange. Various parameters of preparation were varied in order to optimize the waveguides for operation in the NIR region. Particular attention was devoted to the minimization of the losses and the increase of the luminescence efficiency of the metastable I-4(13/2) state of the Er3+ ion. Waveguide properties were determined by m-line spectroscopy and loss measurements. Waveguide Raman and luminescence spectroscopy were used to obtain information about the structure of the prepared films and about the dynamical processes related to the luminescence of the Er3+ ions.

Strong photoluminescent emission has been measured at room temperature for noncrystalline BaT'O-3 (BT) perovskite powders. A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize this phenomenon. From the experimental side, BT powder samples have been synthesized following a soft chemical processing, their crystal structure has been confirmed by x-ray data and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) properties have been measured. Only the structurally disordered samples present PL at room temperature. From the theoretical side, first-principles quantum-mechanical techniques, based on density-functional theory at the B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of crystalline (BT-c) and asymmetric (BT-a) models. Theoretical and experimental results are found to be consistent and their confrontation leads to an interpretation of the PL apparition at room temperature in the structurally disordered powders.

Thin films of barium and strontium titanate (BST), synthesized by the polymeric precursor solution and spin coated on [Pt (140nm)/Ti (10 nM)/SiO2(1000 nm)/Si] substrates were found to be photoluminescent at room temperature when heat treated below 973 K, i.e. before their crystallization. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (DFT) were employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models: one is standing for the crystalline BST thin film and the other one for the structurally disordered thin film. The aim is to compare the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the crystalline and disordered thin films with their UV-vis spectra and with their computed electronic structures. The calculations show that new localized states are created inside the band gap of the crystalline model, as predicted by the UV-vis spectra. The study of the charge repartition in the structure before and after deformation of the periodic model shows that a charge gradient appears among the titanate clusters. This charge gradient, together with the new localized levels, gives favorable conditions for the trapping of holes and electrons in the structure, and thus to a radiative recombination process. Our models are not only consistent with the experimental data, they also allow to explain the relations between structural disorder and photoluminescence at room temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. An amperometric biosensor based on cholinesterase (ChE) has been used for the determination of selected carbamate insecticides in vegetable samples. The linear range of the biosensor for the N-methylcarbamates (aldicarb, carbaryl, carbofuran, methomyl and propoxur) varied from 5 x 10(-5) to 50 mg kg(-1). Limits of detection were calculated on the basis that the ChE enzymes were 10% inhibited and varied, depending of the combination ChE (as acetyl- or butyrylcholinesterase) vs. inhibitor (pesticide), from 1 x 10(-4) to 3.5 mg kg(-1). The biosensor-based carbamate determination was compared to liquid chromatography/UV methods. Three vegetable samples were spiked with carbofuran and propoxur at 125 mu g kg(-1) followed by conventional procedures. Good correlations were observed for carbofuran in the vegetable extracts (79, 96 and 91% recoveries for potato, carrot and sweet pepper, respectively), whereas for propoxur unsatisfactory results were obtained. Potato and carrot samples were spiked with 10, 50 and 125 mu g kg(-1) carbofuran, followed by direct determination by the amperometric biosensor. The fortified sampler; resulted in very high inhibition values, and recoveries were: 28, 34 and 99% for potato, and 140, 90 and 101% for carrot, respectively, at these three fortification levels. Common sense tells us that the future is an essential element in any strategy. In addition, there is a good deal of literature on scenario planning, which is an important tool in considering the future in terms of strategy. However, in many organizations there is serious resistance to the development of scenarios, and they are not broadly implemented by companies. But even organizations that do not rely heavily on the development of scenarios do, in fact, construct visions to guide their strategies. But it might be asked, what happens when this vision is not consistent with the future? To address this problem, the present article proposes a method for checking the content and consistency of an organization's vision of the future, no matter how it was conceived. The proposed method is grounded on theoretical concepts from the field of future studies, which are described in this article. This study was motivated by the search for developing new ways of improving and using scenario techniques as a method for making strategic decisions. The method was then tested on a company in the field of information technology in order to check its operational feasibility. The test showed that the proposed method is, in fact, operationally feasible and was capable of analyzing the vision of the company being studied, indicating both its shortcomings and points of inconsistency. Intense and broad photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was observed on structurally disordered Ba[Zr0.25Ti0.75]O-3 (BZT) powders synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. BZT powders were annealed at 573 K for different times and at 973 K for 2 h in oxygen atmosphere. The single-phase cubic perovskite structure of the powder annealed at 973 K for 2 It was identified by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman techniques. PL emission increased with the increase of annealing time, which reached its maximum value in the powder annealed at 573 K for 192 h. First principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered models. The theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy indicate that the presence of intermediary energy levels in the band gap is favorable for the intense and broad PL emission at room temperature in disordered BZT powders. The PL behavior is probably due the existence of a charge gradient on the disordered structure, denoted by means of a charge transfer process from [TiO5]-[ZrO6] or [TiO6]-[ZrO5] clusters to [TiO6]-[ZrO6] clusters. The integration of outcrop and subsurface information, including micropaleontological data, facies and sequence stratigraphic studies, and oxygen isotope analysis, allow us to present a new stratigraphic model for the Cretaceous continental deposits of the Bauru Group, Brazil. Thirty-eight fossil taxa were recovered from these deposits, including 29 species of ostracodes and 9 species of charophytes. Seven of these ostracode species and three subspecies are new and formally described here. The associations of Chara barbosai - Ilyocypris cf. riograndensis, found in the Adamantina Formation, and Amblyochara sp. - Neuquenocypris minor mineira nov. subsp., found in the Marília Formation. Ponte Alta Member, represent two distinct groups that are respectively Turonian-Santonian and Maastrichtian (probably Late Maastrichtian) in age. Therefore, a hiatus, encompassing more than 11 Ma, separates those two formations. From bottom to top, four depositional cycles were recognized in the Bauru Group in western São Paulo: cycles 1 and 2 belong to Caiuá Formation (fluvio-lacustrine and lacustrine deposits in the Presidente Prudente region), cycle 3 to the Santo Anastácio and lower Adamantina Formation (respectively fluvial and lacustrine deposits), and cycle 4 to the upper Adamantina Formation (fluvio-lacustrine facies). An erosional unconformity separates the Caiuá and Santo Anastácio Formations (between cycles 2 and 3). The Marília Formation is a distinct unit from the underlying succession; it does not occur in western São Paulo, but is found in restricted areas of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás States. During the deposition of the Bauru Group (Aptian? to Maastrichtian) the climate was hot and arid-semiarid. Shallow lakes underwent fluctuations in expansion (wet phases) and contraction (dry phases), as well as variations in salinity. During the deposition of the Adamantina Formation (Turonian-Santonian) there were long, dry periods that caused segmentation of large lakes (due to topographic irregularities in the basaltic substrate) and sometimes exposures of the lake floors; when flooded these lake floors were colonized by extensive meadows of single species of charophytes. Small ephemeral ponds, that were hydrochemically unstable and colonized by multiple species of charophytes, were the depositional sites for the marls and mudstones of Ponte Alta Member (Maastrichtian, Late Maastrichtian?). Our micropaleontological age control, combined with the Late Cretaceous ages of volcanic ashes found in the southeastern Brazil coastal basins, and the stratigraphic position of analcimites from the Jaboticabal-SP region, suggest a Late Coniacian-Santonian age for important magmatic events occurred in the interior of Brazil (north-central São Paulo State, Triângulo Mineiro, and southwestern Goiás State).

A combined theoretical and experimental study to elucidate the molecular mechanism for the Grob fragmentation of different (N-halo)-2-amino cyclocarboxylates with the nitrogen atom in exocyclic position: (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclopropanecarboxylate (1), (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclobutanecarboxylate (2), (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclopentanecarboxylate (3) and (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclohexanecarboxylate (4), and the corresponding acyclic compounds, (N-Cl)-2-amino isobutyric acid (A), (N-Cl)-2-amino butyric acid (B), has been carried out. The kinetics of decomposition for these compounds and related bromine derivatives were experimentally determined by conventional and stopped-flow UV spectrophotometry. The reaction products have been analyzed by GC and spectrophotometry. Theoretical analysis is based in the localization of stationary points (reactants and transition structures) on the potential energy surface. Calculations were carried out at B3LYP/6-31+G* and MP2/6-31+G* computing methods in the gas phase, while solvent effects have been included by means the self-consistent reaction field theory, PCM continuum model, at MP2/6-31+G* and MP4/6-31+G*//MP2/6-31+G* calculation levels. Based on both experimental and theoretical results, the different Grob fragmentation processes show a global synchronicity index close to 0.9, corresponding to a nearly concerted process. At the TSs, the N-Cl bond breaking is more advanced than the C-C cleavage process. An antiperiplanar configuration of these bonds is reached at the TSs, and this geometrical arrangement is the key factor governing the decomposition. In the case of 1 and 2 the ring strain prevents this spatial disposition, leading to a larger value of the activation barrier. Natural population analysis shows that the polarization of the N-Cl and C-C bonds along the bond-breaking process can be considered the driving force for the decomposition and that a negative charge flows from the carboxylate group to the chlorine atom to assist the reaction pathway. A comparison of theoretical and experimental results shows the relevance of calculation level and the inclusion of solvent effects for determining accurate unimolecular rate coefficients for the decomposition process. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

A major challenge in cancer radiotherapy is to deliver a lethal dose of radiation to the target volume while minimizing damage to the surrounding normal tissue. We have proposed a model on how treatment efficacy might be improved by interfering with biological responses to DNA damage using exogenous electric fields as a strategy to drastically reduce radiation doses in cancer therapy. This approach is demonstrated at this Laboratory through case studies with prokaryotes (bacteria) and eukaryotes (yeast) cells, in which cellkilling rates induced by both gamma radiation and exogenous electric fields were measured. It was found that when cells exposed to gamma radiation are immediately submitted to a weak electric field, cell death increases more than an order of magnitude compared to the effect of radiation alone. This finding suggests, although does not prove, that DNA damage sites are reached and recognized by means of long-range electric DNA-protein interaction, and that exogenous electric fields could destructively interfere with this process. As a consequence, DNA repair is avoided leading to massive cell death. Here we are proposing the use this new technique for the design and construction of novel radiotherapy facilities associated with linac generated gamma beams under controlled conditions of dose and beam intensity.

This paper presents the work in progress of an on-demand software deployment system based on application virtualization concepts which eliminates the need of software installation and configuration on each computer. Some mechanisms were created, such as mapping of utilization of resources by the application to improve the software distribution and startup; a virtualization middleware which give all resources needed for the software execution; an asynchronous P2P transport used to optimizing distribution on the network; and off-line support where the user can execute the application even when the server is not available or when is out of the network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

Nowadays, systems based on biométrie techniques have a wide acceptance in many different areas, due to their levels of safety and accuracy. A biometrie technique that is gaining prominence is the identification of individuals through iris recognition. However, to be proficiently used these systems must process their recognition task as fast as possible. The goal of this work has been the development of an iris recognition method to produce results rapidly, yet without losing the recognition accuracy. The experimental results show that the method is quite promising. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
