The growing demand for electricity in Brazil has stimulated the implementation of Small Hydro Power (PCH) in various regions of the country. However, the silting of reservoirs is a major problem faced by power plants and power plants. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the data hydrosedimentological strategic points of the watershed of the Alto Rio Sucuriú (MS) to identify the possible causes siltation of the reservoir PCH Costa Rica and suggest mitigation measures. Hydrosedimentological surveys were conducted during the rainy season (February / March 2012) and drought (August 2012), and obtained data flow, discharge liquid, suspended solids and bottom and organic matter content. Based on these results it was determined that the points 2, 4, 7 and 9 are the largest contributors to sedimentation, and point 4 got most liquid discharge (38,20 m3s-1), point 7 largest discharge of solid suspension (906,3 mg L-1), points 2 and 4 major discharges solid totals (231,59 t dia-1 and 238,185 t dia-1 respectively) and point 9 higher organic matter content (22,18%) . Found greater fraction of fine sand and very fine suspended solids and solid medium sand in the background. As mitigation measures for the process of silting of the reservoir PCH Costa Rica (MS) highlights the orientation of landowners in adopting conservation measures and planting of leguminous species native to the region in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria

In this work, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) treatments of carbon fibers (CFs) were performed in order to induce modifications of chemical and physical properties of the CF surface aimed to improve the performance of thermoplastic composite. The samples to be treated were immersed in nitrogen or air glow discharge plasma and pulsed at −3.0 kV for 2.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 min. After PIII processing, the specimens were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After CFs treatments, the CF/Polypropylene (PP) composites were produced by hot pressing method. Surface morphology of as-received CFs exhibited some scratches aligned along the fibers due to the fiber manufacturing process. After both treatments, these features became deeper, and also, a number of small particles nonuniformly distributed on the fiber surface can be observed. These particles are product of CF surface sputtering during the PIII treatment, which removes the epoxy layer that covers as-received samples. AFM analyses of CF samples treated with nitrogen depicted a large increase of the surface roughness (Rrms value approximately six times higher than that of the untreated sample). The increase of the roughness was also observed for samples treated by air PIII. Raman spectra of all samples presented the characteristic D- and G-bands at approximately 1355 and 1582 cm−1, respectively. Analysis of the surface chemical composition provided by the XPS showed that nitrogen and oxygen were incorporated onto the surface. The polar radicals formed on the surface lead to increasing of the CF surface energy. Both the modification of surface roughness and the surface oxidation contributed for the enhancement of CF adhesion to the polymeric matrix. These features were confirmed ... Results of the analysis of dynamic behavior of flashover phenomenon on the high voltage-polluted insulators are presented. These results were taken from a mathematical and an experimental model that introduce the variable thickness influence of the layer pollution deposited on the high-voltage insulator surface. Analysis of the flashover was done by way of introducing a variation in the thickness of the channel of Obenaus' model, simulating a layer pollution of variable thickness. The objective was to obtain a better reproduction of the real layer pollution deposited on the insulator that works in the polluted regions. Two types of thickness variations were used: a sudden variation, using a step; and a soft variation, using a ramp; that were put along the way of the discharge. Comparison between the mathematical and experimental models showed that introduction of a ramp makes Obenaus' model more efficient in analyzing behavior of flashover phenomenon.

Oil refinery effluents contain many chemicals at variable concentrations. Therefore, it is difficult to predict potential effects on the environment. The Atibaia River (SP, Brazil), which serves as a source of water supply for many municipalities, receives the effluents of one of the biggest oil refinery of this country. The aim of this study was to identify the (eco)toxicity of fresh water sediments under the influence of this oil refinery through neutral red (cytotoxicity) and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) assays (AhR-mediated toxicity) in RTL-W1 cells (derived from fish liver). Once the refinery captures the waters of Jaguarí River for the development of its activities and discharges its effluents after treatment into the Atibaia River, which then flows into Piracicaba River, sediments from both river systems were also investigated. The samples showed a high cytotoxic potential, even when compared to well-known pollution sites. However, the cytotoxicity of samples collected downstream the effluent was not higher than that of sediments collected upstream, which suggested that the refinery discharges are not the main source of pollution in those areas. No EROD activity could be recorded, which could be confirmed by chemical analyses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that revealed a high concentration of phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, and pyrene, which are not EROD inducers in RTL-W1 cells. In contrast, high concentrations of PAHs were found upstream the refinery effluent, corroborating cytotoxicity results from the neutral red assay. A decrease of PAHs was recorded from upstream to downstream the refinery effluent, probably due to dilution of compounds following water discharges. On the other hand, these discharges apparently contribute specifically to the amount of anthracene in the river, since an increase of anthracene concentrations could be recorded downstream the effluent. Since the extrapolation of results from acute toxicity to specific toxic effects with different modes of action is a complex task, complementary bioassays covering additional specific effects should be applied in future studies for better understanding of the overall ecotoxicity of those environments.

This paper focus to apply, to discuss and to propose the Maximum Harvesting Method improvement, regarding the method application, for household rainwater harvesting systems. For this purpose, the rainwater was considered to supply the flush toilet demand in a household for 3, 4, and 5 inhabitants. The 80, 120 and 200m2 catchments areas and the 0, 1, 2 and 4mm first flushes discharges were also considered. Further, the improvement suggestions for cistern volume calculus and volume/level dynamics variation in a period were presented and the results were compared applying the Simulation Analyses Method. The results indicate that the Maximum Harvesting Method could be applied and that the improvement proposal can be used to determinate the cistern volume as well to analyze the dynamic behavior of volume/level, constituting by itself a single tool to assist rainwater harvesting systems designers.

The study took place in a sewage treatment plant located at the actual Department of Water and Sewer in Bauru, city of Sao Paulo state. This treatment plant has an average entrance flow of 4.8 l. s-1 made by upflow anaerobic filter, followed by wetland systems constructed in parallel. . As objective of this study we evaluate the effectiveness of three systems of constructed wetlands, with three different types of plants (Lily pond, Giant papyrus and Cattail),quantify, and qualify the effluents at various stages of treatment to monitor their effectiveness and the possibility of reuse in agriculture. There was a satisfactory removal of organic matter, with a mean concentration of 36 and 39mg.l-1 at the , phases 1 and 2 of the operation, respectively. The constructed wetlands effluent nitrogen and phosphate concentrations were high throughout all the system and the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was much lower than expected, then the system is functioning as secondary treatment and not as tertiary treatment. The concentrations of micro-organisms found in the final effluent were also high. Therefore, it is concluded that the results of removal efficiency of organic matter, of constructed wetland systems, meet the parameters required by legislation for effluent discharges but do not attend the parameters required for nitrogen and micro organisms. This way, these analyzed plants effluents are suitable for reuse in agriculture restricted irrigation
