Monteiro’s assertion of the almighty auteur, after the post-structuralist and post-modern experiences, which had shattered the author and his work in theory and practice, reinstates an authority aimed at organising the chaos caused by the lack of narrative. In a way, therefore, Monteiro’s output is conservative, displaying a peculiar atemporal style, which seems entirely immune to fashion. On the other hand, however, few contemporary films could be more radical than his. Authorship, in his case, means the absence of limits and total freedom of expressing his obsessive world.

John Lewis Partnership lessons in logical incrementalism and organic growth: a case study and interview with the Chairman, Mr Charlie Mayfield

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how strategy is developed and implemented in an organisation with an unusual ownership model. Partnerships are not a prevalent form of ownership but as this case demonstrates they can be extremely effective. Furthermore this case demonstrates how logical incrementalism can be used to implement major strategic decisions. Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on company documentary evidence and a semi-structured interview with Mr Charlie Mayfield, Chairman of John Lewis Partnership. A chairman has a helicopter view of business whose perspectives are rarely captured by strategy researchers. This case study offers an insight into strategic thinking of a chairman and chief executive of a successful company. Research limitations/implications – The case study and interview offer a unique insight into the rationale behind strategic decisions within a successful partnership that has grown organically in a highly competitive retail market without high gearing. Originality/value – This case study sheds light on strategic moves within partnership. Furthermore, very few case studies offer insight into the thinking of a chief executive who has successfully managed a business in a turbulent environment.

Recent climatic trends and linkages to river discharge in Central Vietnam

In this study, change in rainfall, temperature and river discharge are analysed over the last three decades in Central Vietnam. Trends and rainfall indices are evaluated using non-parametric tests at different temporal levels. To overcome the sparse locally available network, the high resolution APHRODITE gridded dataset is used in addition to the existing rain gauges. Finally, existing linkages between discharge changes and trends in rainfall and temperature are explored. Results are indicative of an intensification of rainfall (+15%/decade), with more extreme and longer events. A significant increase in winter rainfall and a decrease in consecutive dry days provides strong evidence for a lengthening wet season in Central Vietnam. In addition, trends based on APHRODITE suggest a strong orographic signal in winter and annual trends. These results underline the local variability in the impacts of climatic change at the global scale. Consequently, it is important that change detection investigations are conducted at the local scale. A very weak signal is detected in the trend of minimum temperature (+0.2°C/decade). River discharge trends show an increase in mean discharge (31 to 35%/decade) over the last decades. Between 54 and 74% of this increase is explained by the increase in precipitation. The maximum discharge also responds significantly to precipitation changes leading to a lengthened wet season and an increase in extreme rainfall events. Such trends can be linked with a likely increase in floods in Central Vietnam, which is important for future adaptation planning and management and flood preparedness in the region. Apolipoprotein E genotype is related to nitric oxide production in platelets

The presence of the, 4 allele of apolipoprotein E (APOE) is considered a risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer`s disease (AD). Our recent data demonstrated that the systemic modulation of oxidative stress in platelets and erythrocytes is disrupted in aging and AD. In this study, the relationship between APOE genotype and oxidative stress markers, both in AD patients and controls, was evaluated. The AD group showed an increase in the content of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and in the activities of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and Na, K-ATPase, when compared to controls. Both groups had a similar cGMP content and superoxide dismutase activity. APOE epsilon 4 allele carriers showed higher NOS activity than non-carriers. These results suggest a possible influence of APOE genotype on nitric oxide (NO) production that might enhance the effects of age-related specific factor(s) associated with neurodegenerative disorders. Charge-transfer behavior of polyaniline single wall carbon nanotubes nanocomposites monitored by resonance Raman spectroscopy

Highly dispersed nanocomposites of polyaniline(PANI) and oxidized single wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been prepared using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. The materials were characterized via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The behavior of the composites as a function of the applied potential was also investigated using in situ Raman electrochemical measurements. The results obtained at E(laser) = 1.17 eV suggest that a charge-transfer process occur between PANI and semiconducting nanotubes for samples where the metallic tubes are previously oxidized. The spectroelectrochemical data show that the presence of SWNTs prevents the oxidation of PANI rings. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

FT-Raman, FTIR and density functional theory studies of a hydrogen-bonded formamide: pyridine complex

Raman and IR experiments have been carried out on formamide (FA) and pyridine (Py) mixtures at different compositions. The appearance of a new Raman band at 996 cm(-1) (nu(1) region of Py), whose intensity depends on the FA concentration, is assigned to an FA: Py adduct and this result is in excellent agreement with those of other authors who employed noisy light-based coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy (I((2)) CARS). Another band at 1587 cm(-1) (nu(8) region of Py) has been observed for the first time by using Raman and IR spectroscopies. Its intensity shows the same dependence on the FA concentration and this fact allows us to also attribute it to an FA: Py adduct. The good relationship between the Raman and IR data demonstrates the potential of the vibrational spectroscopy for this kind of study. Owing to higher absolute Raman scattering cross section, the nu(1) region of Py has been chosen for the quantitative analysis and a stoichiometry of 1 : 1 FA: Py is reported. The experimental data are very well supported by the density functional theory (OFT) calculation, which was employed for the first time to the present system. Furthermore, the actual investigation shows an excellent agreement with those reported from computational calculations for similar systems. A comparison with our previous studies confirms that: the solvent dielectric constant determines the stoichiometry of a given Lewis acid-base adduct in the infinite dilution limit. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur och med vilka medel det skrämmande i John Ajvide Lindqvists Låt den rätte komma in skapas, hur detta förmedlas till läsaren och vilka konsekvenser detta får samt att undersöka på vilket sätt vampyren Eli skiljer sig från den traditionella vampyren.Utgångspunkt i romanen är den mänskliga kroppen och särskilt fokus läggs vid kroppsvätskor, kroppslukter, det sexuellt avvikande och den deformerade kroppen. Gestaltningen av detta handlar om ett brytande mot tabun och etablerade normer som finns i vårt samhälle i dag. Detta skapar känslor av obehag och äckel hos läsaren. Ajvide Lindqvist använder sig av det groteska i syfte att illustrera de obekvämligheter som vi inte vill kännas vid.Eli skiljer sig från den traditionella vampyren genom att vara ett barn och genom att kunna uppfattas som flicka. Här finns också en komplexitet vad gäller kön, då Eli kan sägas vara intergender – av ett odefinierbart kön som ligger bortom de vanliga kategorierna "man" och "kvinna".

John Martyn Harlow: 'obscure country physician?'

If John Martyn Harlow is known at all in the neurosciences, it is because he was the physician who attended Phineas Gage and followed up his case. Although Harlow's brief but insightful accounts of the changes in Gage's personality are fairly well recognized, and his skill in treating Gage often acknowledged, Harlow himself is, for the most part, the shadowy figure caught by the self-depreciatory characterization of the subtitle of this paper. Although his contribution to the neurosciences was singular, literally and figuratively, he deserves a place in the history of the subject. Harlow's training in antiphlogistic therapy can be seen in his treatment of Gage and in his evaluation of its results. As a medical student, he was also exposed to phrenological doctrine, the influence of which can also be seen in his  appreciation and explanation of some aspects of Gage's behaviour.  Manuscript materials, newspaper reports, and other little known material are used here to evaluate Harlow's contributions to medicine and to the medical, political, and civic life of Cavendish, Woburn, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
