Factors influencing the rate of cannibalism in juvenile blue-swimmer crabs Portunus pelagicus were investigated under controlled conditions using time-lapse video recordings. This study was undertaken to improve blue-swimmer crab culture and experimentally addressed (1) prey vulnerability (2) cannibal-victim interactions, and (3) activity patterns of juveniles in varying degrees of refuge. Crabs used in the study were aged 15 weeks and sorted into two size classes; small (less than or equal to 60 mm carapace width (CW)) and large (greater than or equal to65 mm CW) of a similar sex ratio. Vulnerability and thus survival was influenced by body size variation, moult stage and refuge availability. Crabs with carapace width less than or equal to 60 mm were more vulnerable than larger individuals, as indicated by significant differences in survival rates. As predicted, juveniles in transition stages associated with ecdysis were especially vulnerable. Premoult (redliner) crabs appeared to be in a high state of agitation as evidenced by the frequency of agonistic encounters and this may be a contributing factor to the high mortality observed at this critical premoult stag. increases in refuge density increased survival of juveniles proportionally, indicating that the quantity of shelter is important for reducing cannibalism in this species. Cannibal-victim interactions were frequently asymmetrical in terms of size and moult stage. Cannibals were significantly heavier than victims, and were predominantly at intermoult stage. Sexual biases among cannibals and victims were not found in this study. Activity patterns of juveniles were influenced by the experimental conditions. Crabs provided with high refuge showed reduced aggressive activity and increased time spent resting, but unchanged locomotion or feeding activity. Regular grading as well as the presence of suitable shelter for newly moulted crabs is recommended for improving culture of P. pelagicus. Research into inducing synchronous moulting may also yield promising results. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Singing master Joseph Mainzer came to England in 1841 as a political refugee from Germany. Through his music schools, his textbook Singing for the Million, and his journal Mainzer’s Musical Times (today The Musical Times) he contributed significantly to the popularisation of choral singing in Britain. This essay takes Mainzer’s political background as a starting point to investigate the complex relationship between refuge and artistic production. It is argued that the latter was deeply informed by the former. Mainzer not only transferred choral traditions but also a politicised concept of popular culture which started to take hold in pre-revolutionary Vorma¨rz-Germany. The case study is integrated into the larger framework of Anglo-German cultural relations and political refuge in mid-nineteenth century Britain.

The dog-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous - Linnaeus, 1766) is a medium sized canid widely distributed in South America and occurs in almost all of Brazil. Among the main threats to their conservation are the roadkill mainly caused by habitat loss. The shortage of laboratory bush dogs data affect the veterinary medical care hindering the application of appropriate therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of C-reactive protein, albumin, pre-albumin, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin and Afla 1 acid glycoprotein and the Prognostic Index Inflammatory Nutritional (IPIN) in this species, thus obtaining a first description of these prognostic markers. They collected 1.5 ml of blood by jugular access 8 of Mato Dogs copies (thous thous) from the Laboratory of collection of Teaching and Research in Wildlife (limpets), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Uberlândia for exams routine. The samples were collected via the jugular vein after physical restraint of animals and trichotomy of the region. After statistical analysis, the values were: albumin: between 2.7 and 3.0 g / dl, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein: between 0.19 and 0.21 g / l, C-reactive protein: between 1.7 and 2 2, prealbumin between 30 and 35 mg / l haptoglobin: between 0.078 and 0.156 and IPIN ≤ 0.006 being considered normal and values ≥ 0.006 considered high. This press description will serve as a basis for studies where animals may be used with specific diseases and, after analysis, compared with the values found in this study and verified the behavior follows the likeness of domestic dogs.

The objective of this research is to study the origin of the lumbosacral plexus and its nerves in coatis (Nasua nasua). Six adult specimens, three males and three females, were used in this research. The animals were donated by IBAMA / GO or were collected when found dead by the edges of highways in Southeast Goiás. The specimens were fixed in aqueous 10% formaldehyde solution and preserved in the same solution. The observations reveal that the lumbosacral plexus of the coati has a structure with few intercommunications between its components. There are no typical handle formations, but the roots or its branches converge to form the nerves that are driven to the pelvic limb. The components of the Lumbosacral Plexus are ventral branches of L4 to S3. The Lumbosacral plexus generates several short nerves destined to pelvic structures and, at the same time, three long nerves: femoral, obturator and sciatic, all destined to the hind limb.

This study aimed to evaluate the population ecology of Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (Linnaeus, 1766) in two urban areas in the north of Paraná, an open and other protected by assessing the effects of these two different types of environments on the structure and dynamics of the population and its implications for conservation of the species. The monitoring of the populations were performed monthly between June 2014 and March 2015 in Jaboti Lake Park (Apucarana / PR) and Conservation Unit Parque Arthur Thomas (Londrina / PR). To conduct the survey population data was used the methodology of total census (direct counting of individuals). They were evaluated ecological parameters of the populations of capybaras, such as ecological density, abundance, age distribution and birth rate, as well as performed the analysis of the landscape. It was applied to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test the differences between the averages of the abundance of each age group per year of observation, as well as the differences between the average ecological density over the years of observation. The standard relationship between the use of classes and land use in the landscape and the ecological parameters of the capybara populations was evaluated by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The trend of variation of average abundance over time to Thomas Arthur Park revealed abrupt decrease of the population in a short period of time (2014 16 ± 9, 14 ± 1 and 2015 7±1) as well as ecological density in 2015 (0.05 ind./ha). On the other hand, the Jaboti Lake Park, showed an increase in absolute abundance, with marked recovery of the population in the same period (2014 38±8,30 and 2015 45±1,73) and coming up with an ecological density in 2015 (2 ind ./ha). The birth rate found Lake Park Jaboti was superior to Arthur Thomas Park, which had a negative rate between 2012 and 2015. The use and land cover analysis showed significant differences from the point of view of the relative contribution of landscape elements in the spatial heterogeneity. Arthur Thomas Park shows areas of dense vegetation and urban areas relatively higher than those observed in Jaboti Lake Park that revealed relatively higher proportions of the areas of agriculture / field and exposed soil. Thus, the present study revealed that the local population structure is directly related to the spatial characteristics of both studied landscapes, as can be seen by the greater abundance and density seen in Jaboti Lake Park compared to Arthur Thomas Park in recent years of study.

Based on our reading of the minutes of the parliamentary sessions, we shall attempt in this study to analyze the performance of army officers in the Chamber of Deputies, which, from 1851 to 1870, represented one of the most important settings for the military’s participation in politics
