A simple method has been developed to assemble gold nanoparticles to generate 1D assemblies by the assistance of silver ions. The lengths of nanoparticle chains can be controlled by adjusting the content of silver ions in the system. The assembly procedure of gold nanoparticles chains requires no template. The gold nanoparticle chains were characterized using TEM and XPS techniques.

Novel pink light emitting long-lasting afterglow CdSiO3:SM3+ phosphors are prepared by the conventional high-temperature solid-state method and their luminescent properties are investigated. XRD and photolurflinescence (PL) spectra are used to characterize the synthesized phosphors. The phosphors are well crystallized by calcinations at 1050degreesC for 5 h. These phosphors emit pink light and show long-lasting phosphorescence after they are excited with 254 nm ultraviolet light. The phosphorescence lasts for nearly 5 h in the light perception of the dark-adapted human eye (0.32mcd/m(2)). The phosphorescence mechanism is also investigated. All the results indicate that these phosphors have promising potential practical applications.

With the presence of biopolymer-sodium alginate as additive, Eu-doped ZnO (zinc oxide) urchins consisting of nanorods were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern makes evident the absence of phase other than wurtzite ZnO. Upon excited by 325 nm xenon laser, such nanostructured Eu-doped ZnO urchins emit white light, which originates from the luminescence of ZnO and the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Besides acting as stabilizing agent, sodium alginate may also sensitize the Eu3+ ions in the nanostructures and facilitate the energy transfer from the host to Eu3+ ions. Sequential deprotonations of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins (p-OHTPPH2) in DMF + H2O (V/V = 1:1) mixture have been verified to result in the appearance of hyperporphyrin spectra. However, when the deprotonations of these p-OHTPPH2 are carried out in DMF, the spectral changes differ considerably from those in the mixture mentioned above. At low [OH-], the optical spectra in the visible region are still considered to have characteristics of hyperporphyrin spectra. Further deprotonation at much higher basicity makes the optical spectra form three-banded spectra similar to those in the acidic solution. To clarify the molecular origins of these changes, UV-vis, resonance Raman (RR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) experiments are carried out. Our data give evidence that p-OHTPPH2 in DMF can be further deprotonated of pyrrolic-H by higher concentrated NaOH, due to an aprotic medium like DMF effectively weakening the basicity of the porphyrin relative to that of the NaOH, and coordinates with two sodium ions (except the sodium ions that interact with the peripherial phenoxide anions) to form the sodium complexes of p-OHTPPH2 (Na2P, to lay a strong emphasis on the sodium ions that coordinate with the central nitrogen atom), which can be regarded as the porphyrin anions being perturbed by the sodium cations due to their highly ionic character.

Bulk and nanoscale powders of YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) were synthesized by solid-state and sol-gel method. The changes of spectra and energy level were studied. Compared with the bulk YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) crystals, the lattice parameter of YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) nanocrystals decreases. It is also found that the excitation peaks of 5d energy levels shift in nanocrystals. The physical reason for spectral and energy level changes is a comprehensive result from the shift of energy centroid of the 5d orbit, the Coulomb interaction between 4f and 5d electrons and the crystal field splitting of the 5d energy level.

Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were carried out to predict the structures and the absorption and emission spectra for porphyrin and a series of carbaporphyrins-carbaporphyrin, adj-dicarbaporphyrin, opp-dicarbaporphyrin, tricarbaporphyrin and tetracarbaporphyrin. The ground- and excited-state geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) and CIS/6-31g(d) level, respectively. The optimized ground-state geometry and absorption spectra of porphyrin, calculated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), are comparable with the available experimental values. Based on the optimized excited-state geometries obtained by CIS/6-31g(d) method, the emission properties are calculated using TDDFT method at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. The effects of the substitution of nitrogen atoms with carbon atoms at the center positions of porphyrin are discussed. The results indicate that the two-pyrrole nitrogens are important to the chemical and physical properties for porphyrin.

In this paper, the extractabilities of Cyanex 302 and purified Cyanex 302 (hereafter HBTMPTP or HA) in heptane have been compared by extracting the scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, and gadolinium from hydrochloric acid solutions. The roles of the different components in Cyanex 302 on lanthanum extraction have been analyzed. The result demonstrates that the Cyanex 302 has a higher extractability than HBTMPTP, which perhaps originates from the interaction among the components in Cyanex 302. Especially for R3PO, obviously synergistic effect can be observed in the lower pH range and extraction mechanism of lanthanum using the mixture of HBTMPTP and TOPO has been deduced to be:where (HA)(2) and B denote the dimeric form of HBTMPTP and TOPO, respectively. At the same time, the separation abilities of Cyanex 302 and HBTMPTP on the rare earth elements have been compared. Also, the effect of temperature on the extraction with Cyaenx 302, HBTMPTP and the mixture of HBTMPTP and TOPO has also been discussed with thermodynamic functions Delta H, Delta S, and Delta G calculated.

In this paper, a calix[4]arene derivative, 5,11,17,23-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra-(ethanoxycarbonyl)-methoxy-calix[4]arene (L), is investigated as a host to recognize alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+) at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES). Well-defined cyclic voltammograms are obtained at the micro- and nano-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane (W \ DCE) interfaces supported at micro- and nano-pipets.

A blue organic light-emitting device based on an emissive layer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD), which exhibits excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), was presented. The device had a luminance efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 870 cd/m(2). Our studies indicate that some EL may originate from the triplet excitation state of the enol form of HOXD.

We report on the preparation of luminescent silica mesoporous molecular sieves (MCM-48) activated by the europium complex Eu(DBM)(3) . 2H(2)O (where DBM = dibenzoylmethane), using a simple wet impregnation method. Different concentrations of Eu(DBM)(3) . 2H(2)O were introduced into the MCM-48 cubic structure, and the resulting samples were washed with ethanol for different times. UV-Vis absorption measurements and thermogravimetric analysis were used to estimate the amount of Eu complex that has been incorporated within the pores of the MCM-48 host. The various samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance (DR) and fluorescence measurements. The results reveal that Eu complexes have been successfully introduced into the pores of MCM-48 without disrupting the structure. All the impregnated MCM-48 materials show the typical red luminescence of Eu3+ when excited with a UV lamp. Shifts of the absorption maxima were observed in the DR and fluorescence excitation spectra and will be discussed in relation with guest-host interactions between the organic complex and the silica matrix. The decay profiles of the europium luminescence in the different samples were also measured and discussed.

The energy difference DeltaE between the spin-allowed and spin-forbidden states of Tb3+ in crystals is studied. The environmental factor he representing the character of the host is redefined by using the chemical band of complex crystals. The relationship between h(e) and DeltaE is found to be a linear relation. The results show that the energy difference between the spin-forbidden and spin-allowed states for Tb3+ ions in crystals can be predicted from the environmental factor.

A novel phosphor Sr2CeO4 was synthesized by the citrate-gel method. The results of XRD show that the temperature at which the crystallization starting is lowered and the soak time for complete crystallization is decreased. The values of pH of the precursor and the ratio( R) between the citrate and cation ions have an effect on the crystallization process. The host can transfer its exciting energy to rare earth ion Eu3+. The doped compound emits strong white light when the concentration of the doped Eu3+ is low. When that of Eu3+ is increased, it emits strong red light. The fluorescence from the higher excited states can be observed because the multiphonon relaxation probability between Eu3+ ions is low.

Equilibrium distributions of cobalt(II), nickel(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), and copper(II) have been studied in the adsorption with extraction resin containing 1-hexyl-4-ethyloctyl isopropylphosphonic acid (HEOPPA) as an extractant from chloride medium. The distribution coefficients are determined as a function of pH. The data are analyzed both graphically and numerically. The extraction of the metal ions can be explained assuming the formation of metal complexes in the resin phase with a general composition ML2(HL)(q). The adsorbed species of the metal ions are proposed to be ML2 and the equilibrium constants are calculated. The efficiency of the resin in the separation of the metal ions is provided according to the separation factors values. The separation of Zn from Ni, Cd, Cu, Co, and Co from Ni, Cd, Cu with the resin is determined to be available. Furthermore, Freundlich's isothermal adsorption equations and thermodynamic quantities, i.e., DeltaG, DeltaH, and DeltaS are determined.

A series of rare earth ions doped CdSiO3:RE3+(RE=Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) multi-color long-lasting phosphorescence phosphors are prepared by the conventional high-temperature solid-state method. The results of XRD measurement indicate that the products fired under 1050degreesC for 3 h have a good crystallization without any detectable amount of impurity phase. Rare earth ions doped CdSiO3 phosphors possess excellent luminescence properties. When rare earth ions such as Y3+, La3+, Gd3+, Lu3+, Ce3+, Nd3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ are introduced into the CdSiO3 host, one broadband centered at about 420 nm resulting from traps can be observed. In the case of other earth ions such as Pr3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+, their characteristic line emitting as well as the similar to420 nm broadband luminescence can be obtained. The mixture of their characteristic line emitting with the similar to420 nm broadband luminescence results in various afterglow color.
