Rod like structures of hexagonal Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and cubic Y2O3:Ni2+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction studies of as-formed product shows hexagonal phase, whereas the product heat treated at 700 degrees C shows pure cubic phase. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ show hexagonal rods while Y2O3:Ni2+ rods were found to consist of many nanoparticles stacked together forming multi-particle-chains. EPR studies suggest that the site symmetry around Ni2+ ions is predominantly octahedral. PL spectra show emission in blue, green and red regions due to the T-3(1)(P-3)->(3)A(2)(F-3), T-1(2)(D-1)->(3)A(2)(F-3) and T-1(2)(D-1)-> T-3(2)(F-3) transitions of Ni2+ ions, respectively. TL studies were carried out for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+ phosphor upon gamma-dose for 1-6 kGy. A single well resolved glow peaks at 195 and 230 degrees C were recorded for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+, respectively. The glow peak intensity increases linearly up to 4 kGy and 5 kGy for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+, respectively. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were estimated by different methods. The phosphor follows simple glow peak structure, linear response with gamma dose, low fading and simple trap distribution, suggesting that it is quite suitable for radiation dosimetry. The potential of Citrobacter freundii, a Gram negative bacteria for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent chromium (Cr(III))) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Bioremediation of Cr(VI) involved both biosorption and bioreduction processes, as compared to only biosorption process observed with respect to Cr(III) bioremediation. In the case of Cr(VI) bioremediation studies, about 59 % biosorption was achieved at an equilibrium time of 2 h, initial Cr(VI) concentration of 4 mg/L, pH 1 and a biomass loading of 5x10(11) cells/mL. The remainder, 41 %, was found to be in the form of Cr(111) ions owing to bioreduction of Cr(VI) by the bacteria resulting in the absence of Cr(VI) ions in the residue, there by meeting the USEPA specifications. Similar studies were carried out using Cr(III) solution for an equilibrium time of 2 h, Cr(III) concentration of 4 mg/L, pH 3 and a biomass loading of 6.3x10(11) cells/mL., wherein a maximum biosorption of about 30 % was achieved.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is emerging as one of the most competent severe plastic deformation (SPD) method for producing bulk ultra-fine grained materials with improved properties. Optimizing the process parameters for a defect free process is one of the challenging aspects of FSP to mark its commercial use. For the commercial aluminium alloy 2024-T3 plate of 6 mm thickness, a bottom-up approach has been attempted to optimize major independent parameters of the process such as plunge depth, tool rotation speed and traverse speed. Tensile properties of the optimum friction stir processed sample were correlated with the microstructural characterization done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Optimum parameters from the bottom-up approach have led to a defect free FSP having a maximum strength of 93% the base material strength. Micro tensile testing of the samples taken from the center of processed zone has shown an increased strength of 1.3 times the base material. Measured maximum longitudinal residual stress on the processed surface was only 30 MPa which was attributed to the solid state nature of FSP. Microstructural observation reveals significant grain refinement with less variation in the grain size across the thickness and a large amount of grain boundary precipitation compared to the base metal. The proposed experimental bottom-up approach can be applied as an effective method for optimizing parameters during FSP of aluminium alloys, which is otherwise difficult through analytical methods due to the complex interactions between work-piece, tool and process parameters. Precipitation mechanisms during FSP were responsible for the fine grained microstructure in the nugget zone that provided better mechanical properties than the base metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Time-varying linear prediction has been studied in the context of speech signals, in which the auto-regressive (AR) coefficients of the system function are modeled as a linear combination of a set of known bases. Traditionally, least squares minimization is used for the estimation of model parameters of the system. Motivated by the sparse nature of the excitation signal for voiced sounds, we explore the time-varying linear prediction modeling of speech signals using sparsity constraints. Parameter estimation is posed as a 0-norm minimization problem. The re-weighted 1-norm minimization technique is used to estimate the model parameters. We show that for sparsely excited time-varying systems, the formulation models the underlying system function better than the least squares error minimization approach. Evaluation with synthetic and real speech examples show that the estimated model parameters track the formant trajectories closer than the least squares approach.

We present estimates of single spin asymmetry in the electroproduction of J/psi taking into account the transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) evolution of the gluon Sivers function. We estimate single spin asymmetry for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of J/psi. We have calculated the asymmetry using recent parameters extracted by Echevarria et al. using the Collins-Soper-Sterman approach to TMD evolution. These recent TMD evolution fits are based on the evolution kernel in which the perturbative part is resummed up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We have also estimated the asymmetry by using parameters which had been obtained by a fit by Anselmino et al., using both an exact numerical and an approximate analytical solution of the TMD evolution equations. We find that the variation among the different estimates obtained using TMD evolution is much smaller than between these on one hand and the estimates obtained using DGLAP evolution on the other. Even though the use of TMD evolution causes an overall reduction in asymmetries compared to the ones obtained without it, they remain sizable. Overall, upon use of TMD evolution, predictions for asymmetries stabilize.

Surface energy processes has an essential role in urban weather, climate and hydrosphere cycles, as well in urban heat redistribution. The research was undertaken to analyze the potential of Landsat and MODIS data in retrieving biophysical parameters in estimating land surface temperature & heat fluxes diurnally in summer and winter seasons of years 2000 and 2010 and understanding its effect on anthropogenic heat disturbance over Delhi and surrounding region. Results show that during years 2000-2010, settlement and industrial area increased from 5.66 to 11.74% and 4.92 to 11.87% respectively which in turn has direct effect on land surface temperature (LST) and heat fluxes including anthropogenic heat flux. Based on the energy balance model for land surface, a method to estimate the increase in anthropogenic heat flux (Has) has been proposed. The settlement and industrial areas has higher amounts of energy consumed and has high values of Has in all seasons. The comparison of satellite derived LST with that of field measured values show that Landsat estimated values are in close agreement within error of 2 degrees C than MODIS with an error of 3 degrees C. It was observed that, during 2000 and 2010, the average change in surface temperature using Landsat over settlement & industrial areas of both seasons is 1.4 degrees C & for MODIS data is 3.7 degrees C. The seasonal average change in anthropogenic heat flux (Has) estimated using Landsat & MODIS is up by around 38 W/m(2) and 62 W/m(2) respectively while higher change is observed over settlement and concrete structures. The study reveals that the dynamic range of Has values has increased in the 10 year period due to the strong anthropogenic influence over the area. The study showed that anthropogenic heat flux is an indicator of the strength of urban heat island effect, and can be used to quantify the magnitude of the urban heat island effect. A simple method employing an optical probe is presented to measure density variations in a hypersonic flow obstructed by a test model in a typical shock tunnel. The probe has a plane light wave trans-illuminating the flow and casting a shadow of a random dot pattern. Local slopes of the distorted wavefront are obtained from shifts of the dots in the pattern. Local shifts in the dots are accurately measured by cross-correlating local shifted shadows with the corresponding unshifted originals. The measured slopes are suitably unwrapped by using a discrete cosine transform based phase unwrapping procedure and also through iterative procedures. The unwrapped phase information is used in an iterative scheme for a full quantitative recovery of density distribution in the shock around the model through refraction tomographic inversion. Hypersonic flow field parameters around a missile shaped body at a free-stream Mach number of 5.8 measured using this technique are compared with the numerically estimated values. The paper presents the study of wave propagation in quasicrystals. Our interest is in the computation of the wavenumber (k(n)) and group speed (c(g)) of the phonon and phason displacement modes of one, two, and three dimensional quasicrystals. These wave parameter expressions are derived and computed using the elasto-hydrodynamic equations for quasicrystals. For the computation of the wavenumber and group speeds, we use Fourier transform approximation of the phonon and the phason displacement modes. The characteristic equations obtained are a polynomial equation of the wavenumber (k(n)), with frequency as a parameter. The corresponding group speeds (c(g)) for different frequencies are then computed from the wavenumber k(n). The variation of wavenumber and group speeds with frequency is plotted for the 1-D quasicrystal, 2-D decagonal Al-Ni-Co quasicrystals, and 3-D icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn and Zn-Mg-Sc quasicrystals. From the wavenumber and group speeds plots, we obtain the cut-off frequencies for different spatial wavenumber eta(m). The results show that for 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D quasicrystals, the phonon displacement modes are non-dispersive for low values of eta(m) and becomes dispersive for increasing values of eta(m). The cut-off frequencies are not observed for very low values of eta(m), whereas the cut-off frequency starts to appear with increasing eta(m). The group speeds of the phason displacement modes are orders of magnitude lower than that of the phonon displacement modes, showing that the phason modes do not propagate, and they are essentially the diffusive modes. The group speeds of the phason modes are also not influenced by eta(m). The group speeds for the 2-D quasicrystal at 35 kHz is also simulated numerically using Galerkin spectral finite element methods in frequency domain and is compared with the results obtained using wave propagation analysis. The effect of the phonon and phason elastic constants on the group speeds is studied using 3-D icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn and Zn-Mg-Sc quasicrystals. It is also shown that the phason elastic constants and the coupling coefficient do not affect the group speeds of the phonon displacement modes. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

The present investigation deals with grain boundary engineering of a modified austenitic stainless steel to obtain a material with enhanced properties. Three types of processing that are generally in agreement with the principles of grain boundary engineering were carried out. The parameters for each of the processing routes were fine-tuned and optimized. The as-processed samples were characterized for microstructure and texture. The influence of processing on properties was estimated by evaluating the room temperature mechanical properties through micro-tensile tests. It was possible to obtain remarkably high fractions of CSL boundaries in certain samples. The results of the micro-tensile tests indicate that the grain boundary engineered samples exhibited higher ductility than the conventionally processed samples. The investigation provides a detailed account of the approach to be adopted for GBE processing of this grade of steel. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimation of the municipal solid waste settlements and the contribution of each of the components are essential in the estimation of the volume of the waste that can be accommodated in a landfill and increase the post-usage of the landfill. This article describes an experimental methodology for estimating and separating primary settlement, settlement owing to creep and biodegradation-induced settlement. The primary settlement and secondary settlement have been estimated and separated based on 100% pore pressure dissipation time and the coefficient of consolidation. Mechanical creep and biodegradation settlements were estimated and separated based on the observed time required for landfill gas production. The results of a series of laboratory triaxial tests, creep tests and anaerobic reactor cell setups were conducted to describe the components of settlement. All the tests were conducted on municipal solid waste (compost reject) samples. It was observed that biodegradation accounted to more than 40% of the total settlement, whereas mechanical creep contributed more than 20% towards the total settlement. The essential model parameters, such as the compression ratio (C-c'), rate of mechanical creep (c), coefficient of mechanical creep (b), rate of biodegradation (d) and the total strain owing to biodegradation (E-DG), are useful parameters in the estimation of total settlements as well as components of settlement in landfill.

A comprehensive design flow is proposed for the design of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems that are fabricated using SOIMUMPs process. Many of the designers typically do not model the temperature dependency of electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and convection coefficient, as it is very cumbersome to create/incorporate the same in the existing FEM simulators. Capturing these dependencies is very critical particularly for structures that are electrically actuated. Lookup tables that capture the temperature dependency of electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and convection coefficient are created. These look up tables are taken as inputs for a commercially available FEM simulator to model the semiconductor behavior. It is demonstrated that when temperature dependency for all the above mentioned parameters is not captured, then the error in estimation of the maximum temperature (for a given structure) could be as high as 30%. Error in the estimated resistance value under the same conditions is as high as 40%. When temperature dependency of the above mentioned parameters is considered then error w.r.t the measured values is less than 5%. It is evident that error in temperature estimates leads to erroneous results from mechanical simulations as well.

The blocked diisocyanate crosslinked chitosan membrane was modified by incorporating different mass% of NaY zeolite. The physico-chemical properties of resulting composite membranes were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties of the membranes were studied using universal testing machine (UTM). After measuring the equilibrium swelling, membranes were subjected to pervaporation for separation of water-isopropanol mixtures. Both flux and selectivity were increased with increasing NaY zeolite content in the membranes. The membrane containing 40 mass% of NaY zeolite exhibited the highest separation selectivity of 11,241 with a flux of 11.37 x 10(-2) kg/m(2) h for 10 mass% of water in the feed. The total flux and flux of water are almost overlapping each other, suggesting that these membranes could be effectively used to break the azeotropic point of water-isopropanol mixture. From the temperature dependent diffusion and permeation values, the Arrhenius activation parameters were estimated. All the composite membranes exhibited lower activation energy compared to crosslinked membrane, indicating that the permeants require less energy during the process because of molecular sieving action attributed to the presence of sodalite and super cages in the framework of Nay zeolite. The Henry's mode of sorption dominates the process, giving an endothermic contribution. (C) 2014 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phase-change cooling technique is a suitable method for thermal management of electronic equipment subjected to transient or cyclic heat loads. The thermal performance of a phase-change based heat sink under cyclic heat load depends on several design parameters, namely, applied heat flux, cooling heat transfer coefficient, thermophysical properties of phase-change materials (PCMs), and physical dimensions of phase-change storage system during melting and freezing processes. A one-dimensional conduction heat transfer model is formulated to evaluate the effectiveness of preliminary design of practical PCM-based energy storage units. In this model, the phase-change process of the PCM is divided into melting and solidification subprocesses, for which separate equations are written. The equations are solved sequentially and an explicit closed-form solution is obtained. The efficacy of analytical model is estimated by comparing with a finite-volume-based numerical solution for both transient and cyclic heat loads.

The effect of sputtering parameters such as gas pressure and power on the structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of sputtered Tb-Fe thin films was investigated. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies showed that all the films were amorphous in nature irrespective of the sputtering parameters. A fine island kind of morphology was observed at low sputtering power whereas large clusters were seen at higher sputtering power. While the composition of Tb-Fe films remained constant with increasing sputtering power, the magnetic behaviour was found to change from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic. On the other hand, the increase in argon gas pressure was found to deplete the iron concentration in Tb-Fe thin films, which in turn reduced the anisotropy and Curie temperature. Annealing of the films at 773 K did not result in any crystallization and the magnetic properties were also found to remain unchanged. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of the present work is to study the effect of electrical process Parameters (duty cycle and frequency) on morphological, structural, and in-vitro corrosion characteristics of oxide films formed on zirconium by plasma electrolytic oxidation in an electrolyte system consisting of 5 g/L of trisodium orthophosphate. The oxide films fabricated on zirconium by systematically varying the duty cycle and frequency are characterized for its phase composition, surface morphology, chemical composition, roughness, wettability, surface energy, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, apatite forming ability and osteoblast cell adhesion. X-ray diffraction pattern of all the oxide films showed the predominance of m-ZrO2 phase. Dense and uniform films with thickness varying from 9 to 15 mu m and roughness in the range of 0.62 to 1.03 mu m are formed. Porosity of oxide films is found to be increased with an increase infrequency. The water contact angle results demonstrated that the oxide films exhibited similar hydrophilicity to zirconium substrate. All oxide films showed improved corrosion resistance, as indicated by far lower corrosion current density and passive corrosion potential compared to the zirconium substrate in simulated body fluid environment, and among the four different combinations of duty cycle and frequency employed in the present study, the oxide film formed at 95% duty cycle and 50 Hz frequency (HDLF film) showed superior pitting corrosion resistance, which can be attributed to its pore free morpholOgy. Scratch test results showed that the HDLF oxide film adhered firmly to the substrate by developing a notable scratch resistance at 19.5 +/- 1.2.N. Besides the best corrosion resistance and scratch retistance, the HDLF film also showed good apatite forming ability and osteo sarcoma cell adhesion on its surface. The HDLF oxide film on zirconium with superior surface characteristics is believed to be useful for various types of implants in the dental and orthopedic fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
