In order to validate the Geant4 toolkit for dosimetry applications, simulations were performed to calculate conversion coefficients h(10, alpha) from air kerma free-in-air to personal dose equivalent Hp(10, a). The simulations consisted of two parts: the production of X-rays with radiation qualities of narrow and wide spectra, and the interaction of radiation with ICRU tissue-equivalent and ISO water slab phantoms. The half-value layers of the X-ray spectra obtained by simulation were compared with experimental results. Mean energy, spectral resolution, half-value layers and conversion coefficients were compared with ISO reference values. The good agreement between results from simulation and reference data shows that the Geant4 is suitable for dosimetry applications which involve photons with energies in the range of ten to a few hundreds of keV. We describe how the method of detection of delayed K x-rays produced by the electron capture decay of the residual nuclei can be a powerful tool in the investigation of the effect of the breakup process on the complete fusion (CF) cross-section of weakly bound nuclei at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. This is presently one of the most interesting subjects under investigation in the field of low-energy nuclear reactions, and the difficult experimental task of separating CF from the incomplete fusion (ICF) of one of the breakup fragments can be achieved by the x-ray spectrometry method. We present results for the fusion of the (9)Be + (144)Sm system. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The protective shielding design of a mammography facility requires the knowledge of the scattered radiation by the patient and image receptor components. The shape and intensity of secondary x-ray beams depend on the kVp applied to the x-ray tube, target/filter combination, primary x-ray field size, and scattering angle. Currently, shielding calculations for mammography facilities are performed based on scatter fraction data for Mo/Mo target/filter, even though modern mammography equipment is designed with different anode/filter combinations. In this work we present scatter fraction data evaluated based on the x-ray spectra produced by a Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh and W/Rh target/filter, for 25, 30 and 35 kV tube voltages and scattering angles between 30 and 165 degrees. Three mammography phantoms were irradiated and the scattered radiation was measured with a CdZnTe detector. The primary x-ray spectra were computed with a semiempirical model based on the air kerma and HVL measured with an ionization chamber. The results point out that the scatter fraction values are higher for W/Rh than for Mo/Mo and Mo/Rh, although the primary and scattered air kerma are lower for W/Rh than for Mo/Mo and Mo/Rh target/filter combinations. The scatter fractions computed in this work were applied in a shielding design calculation in order to evaluate shielding requirements for each of these target/filter combinations. Besides, shielding requirements have been evaluated converting the scattered air kerma from mGy/week to mSv/week adopting initially a conversion coefficient from air kerma to effective dose as 1 Sv/Gy and then a mean conversion coefficient specific for the x-ray beam considered. Results show that the thickest barrier should be provided for Mo/Mo target/filter combination. They also point out that the use of the conversion coefficient from air kerma to effective dose as 1 Sv/Gy is conservatively high in the mammography energy range and overestimate the barrier thickness. This article presents an investigation of the temperature induced modification in the microstructure and dynamics of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) cast films using Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Fluorescence Spectroscopy (PL). MEH-PPV chain motions were characterized as a function of temperature by NMR. The results indicated that the solvent used to cast the films influences the activation energy of the side-chain motions. This was concluded from the comparison of the activation energy of the toluene cast film, E(a) = (54 +/- 8) kJ/mol, and chloroform cast film, E(a) = (69 +/- 5) kJ/mol, and could be attributed to the higher side-chain packing provided by chloroform, that preferentially solvates the side chain in contrast to toluene that solvates mainly the backbone. Concerning the backbone mobility, it was observed that the torsional motions in the MEH-PPV have average amplitude of similar to 10 degrees at 300 K, which was found to be independent of the solvent used to cast the films. In order to correlate the molecular dynamics processes with the changes in the microstructure of the polymer, in situ WAXS experiments as a function of temperature were performed and revealed that the interchain spacing in the MEH-PPV molecular aggregates increases as a function of temperature, particularly at temperatures where molecular relaxations occur. It was also observed that the WAXS peak associated with the bilayer spacing becomes narrower and its intensity increases whereas the peak associated with the inter-backbone planes reduces its intensity for higher temperatures. This last result Could be interpreted as a decrease in the number of aggregates and the reduction of the interchain species during the MEH-PPV relaxation processes. These WAXS results were correlated with PL spectra modifications observed upon temperature treatments. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, GdAlO3:RE3+ (RE = Eu or Tb) was successfully prepared by the Pechini method at lower temperatures when compared to others methods as solid-state synthesis and sol-gel process. In accordance to the XRD data, the fully crystalline single-phase GdAlO3 could be obtained at 900 degrees C. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) shows a crystallization peak at 850 degrees C. The samples are composed by monocrystalline particles (50-120 nm) exhibiting the formation of aggregates among them, which indicates the beginning of the sinterization process. This feature indicates a strong tendency to the formation of aggregates, which is a suitable ability for the close-packing of particles, and hence a potential application in X-ray intensifying screens. Luminescence measurements indicate Gd3+ -> RE3+ energy transfer. The Eu3+ emission spectra exhibit all the characteristics D-5(0) -> F-7(j) transitions and the observed profile suggests that RE3+ ions occupy at least one site without center of symmetry. For terbium-doped samples, the D-5(3) -> F-7(j) (blue emission) and D-5(4) -> F-7(j) (green emission) transitions were observed and the ratio between them may depend on the Tb3+ content due to cross-relaxation processes. Pyroelectric sensors work as a thermal transducer converting the non-quantified thermal flux into the output measurable quantity of electrical charge, voltage or current. Ferroelectric ceramics and ferroelectric polymers have been extensively used as thermal detectors. More recently the research in the field of pyroelectricity has been concentrated on discovering materials with higher figures of merit (FOM), which means better sensing materials. Composite materials obtained with ferroelectric ceramics embedded in polymer host have received great attention because of their formability, mechanical resistance and the possibility to change their dielectric property varying the volume fraction of ceramic particles. In this work composite films made of modified lead titanate (PZ34) and poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) were characterized and used as sensing element to measure X-ray intensity in the ortovoltage range (120 - 300 kVp). The sensor response varies from 2.70 V to 0.80 V in the energy fluency range of 6.30 to 37.20 W/m(2). Furthermore the absorbed energy was analyzed as a function of the ionizing energy. The results indicate that the PZ34/PEEK composite with 60/40 vol.% can be useful to monitor X-ray radiation therapy.

The electronic structure of Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (PLT) compounds for x ranging from 0 to 30 at. % of La is investigated by means of soft x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the Ti L-3,L-2 and O K edges. The greatest modification in the structure of the Ti 2p XANES spectra of the PLT compounds is observed in the region of the high energy peak of the L-3 edge (e(g) states), which exhibits a splitting in the undoped sample. As the amount of lanthanum increases, this splitting becomes less pronounced. This modification is interpreted as a decrease in the degree of disorder of titanium atoms, which is correlated to the substitution of Pb by La atoms. The structural changes observed at the low energy peaks of the O K-edge XANES spectra of the PLT compounds may be interpreted in terms of hybridization between O 2p, Ti 3d, and Pb 6p orbitals. A decrease in the degree of hybridization observed as Pb atoms are replaced by La atoms may be related to the differences in the ferroelectric properties observed between x=0.0 and x=0.30 compounds. Results of differential scanning calometry (DSC), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of InF3-based glasses, treated at different temperatures, ranging from glass transition temperature (T-g) to crystallization temperature (T-c), are reported. The main features of the experimental results are as follows. DSC analysis emphasizes several steps in the crystallization process. Heat treatment at temperatures above T-g enhances the nucleation of the first growing phases but has little influence on the following ones. XRD results show that several crystalline phases are formed, with solid state transitions when heated above 680 K, the F-19 NMR results show that the spin-lattice relaxation, for the glass samples heat treated above 638 K, is described by two time constants. For samples treated below this temperature a single time constant T-1 was observed. Measurements of the F-19 spin-lattice relaxation time (T-1), as a function of temperature, made possible the identification of the mobile fluoride ions. The activation energy, for the ionic motion, in samples treated at crystallization temperature was found to be 0.18 +/- 0.01 eV. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The surface oxidation of UO2 sintered plates at 170-275 ° C was studied in situ by high temperature X-ray diffractometry. At very low oxygen concentration, UO2 is oxidized to U4O9, while at 300°C and argon-20 vol% oxygen it is oxidized up to U3O7. X-ray diffraction profiles of the UO2, U4O9 and U3O7 phases were well characterized during the transformations. The activation energy for the transformation of UO2 to U4O9, obtained from X-ray diffraction data, was found to be 117 ± 9 kJ/mol and 90 ± 14 kJ/mol for the β-(311) and α-(200) reflections, respectively. © 1991.

We have studied the effects of niobium beam filtration on absorbed doses, on image density and contrast, and on photon spectra with conventional and high-frequency dental x-ray generators. Added niobium reduced entry and superficial absorbed doses in periapical radiography by 9% to 40% with film and digital image receptors, decreased the radiation necessary to produce a given image density on E-speed film and reduced image contrast on D- and E-speed films. As shown by increased half-value layers for aluminum, titanium, and copper and by pulse-height analyses of beam spectra, niobium increased average beam energy by 6% to 19%. Despite the benefits of adding niobium on patient dose reduction and on narrowing the beams' energy spectra, the beam can be overhardened. Adding niobium, therefore, strikes the best balance between radiation dose reduction and beam attenuation, with its risks of increased exposure times, motion blur, and diminished image contrast, when it is used at modest thicknesses (30 μm) and at lower kVp (70) settings. © 1995 Mosby-Year Book, Inc.

Thin films of chemically synthesized polyaniline and poly(o-methoxyaniline) were exposed to ionizing X-ray radiation and characterized by radiation induced conductivity measurements, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, electrical conductivity and solubility measurements. Samples irradiated in vacuum or dry Oxygen atmosphere did not have their electronic spectra changed. However, under humid atmosphere the energy of the excitonic transition was decreased and accompanied by a great conductivity increase. The results indicate that doping of polyaniline can be induced by X-ray radiation which might be of great interest for applications on lithography and microelectronics.

A novel instrument for measurement of X-ray intensity from mammography consists of a sensitive pyro-electric detector, a high-sensitivity, low-noise current-to-voltage converter, a microcontroller and a digital display. The heart of this device, and what makes it unique is the pyro-electric detector, which measures radiation by converting heat from absorbed incident X-rays into an electric current. This current is then converted to a voltage and digitised. The detector consists of a ferro-electric crystal; two types were tested; lithium tantalate and lithium niobate. X-ray measurement in mammography is challenging because of its relatively low photon energy range, from 11 keV to 15 keV equivalent mean energy, corresponding to a peak tube potential from 22 to 36 kV. Consequently, energy fluence rate or intensity is low compared with that of common diagnostic X-ray. The instrument is capable of measuring intensities as low as 0.25 mWm -2 with precision greater than 99%. Not only was the instrument capable of performing in the clinical environment, with high background electromagnetic interference and vibration, but its performance was not degraded after being subjected to 140 roentgen (3.6 × 10 -2 C kg -2 air) as measured by piezo-electric (d 33) or pyro-electric coefficients. © IFMBE 2005.

The prototype instrument consists of a pyroelectric sensor, a low-noise highsensitivity current-to-voltage converter, a microcontroller and a digital display. The response of the instrument is nonlinear with the intensity of the radiation. The precision is better than 3%. The reaction of 2,6-diformylpyridine-bis(benzoylhydrazone) [dfpbbh] and 2,6-diformylpyridine-bis(4-phenylsemicarbazone) [dfpbpsc] with lanthanides salts yielded the new chelates complexes [Eu(dfpbpsc-H +) 2]NO 3 (1), [Dy(fbhmp) 2][Dy(dfpbbh-2H +) 2]·2EtOH·2H 2O (fbhmp = 2-formylbenzoylhydrazone-6-methoxide-pyridine; Ph = phenyl; Py = pyridine; Et = ethyl) and [Er 2(dfpbbh-2H +) 2(μ-NO 3)(H 2O) 2(OH)]·H 2O. X-ray diffraction analysis was employed for the structural characterization of the three chelate complexes. In the case of complex 1, optical, synthetic and computational methods were also exploited for ground state structure determinations and triplet energy level of the ligand and HOMO-LUMO calculations, as well as for a detailed study of its luminescence properties. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
