This paper analyzes the stabilizability properties of nonlinear cascades in which a nonminimum phase linear system is interconnected through its output to a stable nonlinear system. It is shown that the instability of the zeros of the linear system can be traded with the stability of the nonlinear system up to a limit fixed by the growth properties of the cascade interconnection term. Below this limit, global stabilization is achieved by smooth static state feedback. Beyond this limit, various examples illustrate that controllability of the cascade may be lost, making it impossible to achieve large regions of attractions.

Adaptation to speaker and environment changes is an essential part of current automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. In recent years the use of multi-layer percpetrons (MLPs) has become increasingly common in ASR systems. A standard approach to handling speaker differences when using MLPs is to apply a global speaker-specific constrained MLLR (CMLLR) transform to the features prior to training or using the MLP. This paper considers the situation when there are both speaker and channel, communication link, differences in the data. A more powerful transform, front-end CMLLR (FE-CMLLR), is applied to the inputs to the MLP to represent the channel differences. Though global, these FE-CMLLR transforms vary from time-instance to time-instance. Experiments on a channel distorted dialect Arabic conversational speech recognition task indicates the usefulness of adapting MLP features using both CMLLR and FE-CMLLR transforms. © 2013 IEEE.

A method is proposed for on-line reconfiguration of the terminal constraint used to provide theoretical nominal stability guarantees in linear model predictive control (MPC). By parameterising the terminal constraint, its complete reconstruction is avoided when input constraints are modified to accommodate faults. To enlarge the region of feasibility of the terminal control law for a certain class of input faults with redundantly actuated plants, the linear terminal controller is defined in terms of virtual commands. A suitable terminal cost weighting for the reconfigurable MPC is obtained by means of an upper bound on the cost for all feasible realisations of the virtual commands from the terminal controller. Conditions are proposed that guarantee feasibility recovery for a defined subset of faults. The proposed method is demonstrated by means of a numerical example. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, the experimental study on the rocking behaviour of a full scale barrel vaulted structure undergo cyclic horizontal loading is discussed. The study is the first part of an ongoing experimental and theoretical research program, developed by the University of Brescia, concerning the seismic behaviour of masonry buildings. The scope of the paper is to provide some evidence of the rocking mechanism experienced by barrel vaulted structures undergo horizontal loading. Understanding of the behaviour of such structural systems is fundamental for their seismic vulnerability assessment, as well as for the correct design of possible strengthening techniques. The structural behaviour is also investigated by means of non linear finite element analyses. Numerical results are validated through comparison with experimental results. After validation, the FE model can be applied to different case studies.

Qubit measurement by mesoscopic charge detectors has received great interest in the community of mesoscopic transport and solid-state quantum computation, and some controversial issues still remain unresolved. In this work, we revisit the continuous weak measurement of a solid-state qubit by single electron transistors (SETs) in nonlinear-response regime. For two SET models typically used in the literature, we find that the signal-to-noise ratio can violate the universal upper bound "4," which is imposed quantum mechanically on linear-response detectors. This different result can be understood by means of the cross correlation of the detector currents by viewing the two junctions of the single SET as two detectors. Possible limitation of the potential-scattering approach to this result is also discussed.

Processing networks are a variant of the standard linear programming network model which are especially useful for optimizing industrial energy/environment systems. Modelling advantages include an intuitive diagrammatic representation and the ability to incorporate all forms of energy and pollutants in a single integrated linear network model. Added advantages include increased speed of solution and algorithms supporting formulation. The paper explores their use in modelling the energy and pollution control systems in large industrial plants. The pollution control options in an ethylene production plant are analyzed as an example. PROFLOW, a computer tool for the formulation, analysis, and solution of processing network models, is introduced.

We present a model for electrons confined in narrow conducting channels by a parabolic well under moderate to high magnetic fields which takes into account a cutoff in the filling of the subbands. Such a cutoff gives rise to energy-separated subbands and a two-dimensional (2D) like subband depopulation, resulting in a relation between sublevel index n and inverse magnetic field B-1 such that in the high-field regime it changes over to the well-known 2D form as expected, and in the moderate field regime it shows pronounced deviation from linearity. This agrees well with the experimental results. The linear region of the n-B-1 experimental plot is believed to arise from the two dimensionality of the system. Calculations show that no resolvable 1D sublevel exists in the 0.5-mu-m-wide wire at very small magnetic fields (including zero field), which agrees qualitatively with the experimental results found in other wires that the Hall resistance, R(H), approaches its classical value B/n(e)e in this region and R(H) = 0 at B = 0, where n(e) is the electron concentration. In this model the linear and nonlinear regions in the experimental n-B-1 plot are used to extract the characteristic frequency omega-0, and the effective 2D electron concentration N(e)2D, respectively.

The comparison of aggregation behaviors between the branched block polyether T1107 (polyether A) and linear polyether (EO)(60)(PO)(40)(EO)(60) (polyether B) in aqueous solution are investigated by the MesoDyn simulation. Polyether A forms micelles at lower concentration and has a smaller aggregation number than B. Both the polyethers show the time-dependent micellar growth behaviors. The spherical micelles appear and then change to rod-like micelles with time evolution in the 10 vol% solution of polyether A. The micellar cluster appears and changes to pseudo-spherical micelles with time evolution in the 20 vol% solution of polyether A. However, the spherical micelles appear and change to micellar cluster with time evolution in the 20 vol% polyether B solution. The shear can induce the micellar transition of both block polyethers. When the shear rate is 1x10(5) s(-1), the shear can induce the sphere-to-rod transition of both polyethers at the concentration of 10 and 20 vol%. When the shear rate is lower than 1x10(5) s(-1), the huge micelles and micellar clusters can be formed in the 10 and 20 vol% polyether A systems under the shear, while the huge micelles are formed and then disaggregated with the time evolution in the 20 vol% polyether B system.

Blends of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with polystyrene (PS) and blends of LLDPE with high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) were prepared through a reactive extrusion method. For increased compatibility of the two blending components, a Lewis acid catalyst, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), was adopted to initiate the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction between the blending components. Spectra data from Raman spectra of the LLDPE/PS/AlCl3 blends extracted with tetrahydrofuran verified that LLDPE segments were grafted to the para position of the benzene rings of PS, and this confirmed the graft structure of the Friedel-Crafts reaction between the polyolefin and PS. Because the in situ generated LLDPE-g-PS and LLDPE-g-HIPS copolymers acted as compatibilizers in the relative blending systems, the mechanical properties of the LLDPE/PS and LLDPE/HIPS blending systems were greatly improved. For example, after compatibilization, the Izod impact strength of an LLDPE/PS blend (80/20 w/w) was increased from 88.5 to 401.6 J/m, and its elongation at break increased from 370 to 790%. For an LLDPE/HIPS (60/40 w/w) blend, its Charpy impact strength was increased from 284.2 to 495.8 kJ/m(2). Scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the size of the domains decreased from 4-5 to less than 1 mum, depending on the content of added AlCl3.

compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible blends of LLDPE with styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) has been investigated by means of C-13 CPMAS n.m.r. and d.s.c. techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/SBS blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and SBS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the amorphous region of LLDPE acid PS block domain of SBS, respectively. It was also found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, with serious effects on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE. The effect of LLDPE-g-PS on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE in the LLDPE/SBS blends obviously depends on the composition of the blends, but has little dependence on the PS grafting yields of LLDPE-g-PS. The compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible LLDPE/PS blends has been studied by means of C-13 CP-MAS NMR and DSC techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/PS blends, and the compatibilizing effect of LLDPE-g-PS on LLDPE/PS blends depends on the PS grafting yield and molecular structure of the compatibilizers and also on the composition of the blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and PS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the noncrystalline region of the LLDPE and PS domain, respectively. Meanwhile, LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, resulting in an obvious change in the crystallization behavior of LLDPE. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Concentrated cultures (25-86 mg Chl a l(-1)) of Anabaena variabilis PK84 were incubated under 99% Ar+1% CO2 atmosphere in the photobioreactor made of coaxial cylinders. Under illumination equal to 353 mu E m(-2) s(-1) they produced hydrogen with the rate more than 20 ml l(-1) h(-1) for several days. The efficiency of light energy conversion into H-2 was approx. 1% and did not depend significantly on initial Chl a concentration. H-2/O-2 ratio reached 41.5% of theoretical value for water photolysis. Data indicate that dense cultures might be used for outdoor systems under direct sun light. Supra-optimal temperatures 36 degrees C were not harmful for cultures even for 2 days period. Short-term incubation of cultures under 36 degrees C even increased H2 production rate and efficiency of light energy bioconversion by 1.25 times. This paper explores automating the qualitative analysis of physical systems. It describes a program, called PLR, that takes parameterized ordinary differential equations as input and produces a qualitative description of the solutions for all initial values. PLR approximates intractable nonlinear systems with piecewise linear ones, analyzes the approximations, and draws conclusions about the original systems. It chooses approximations that are accurate enough to reproduce the essential properties of their nonlinear prototypes, yet simple enough to be analyzed completely and efficiently. It derives additional properties, such as boundedness or periodicity, by theoretical methods. I demonstrate PLR on several common nonlinear systems and on published examples from mechanical engineering.
