The generator coordinate Hartree-Fock method was used to develop 20s17p, 30s20p14d, and 30s21p16d Gaussian basis sets for the O ((3)p), Mn (S-6), and Y (D-2) atoms, respectively. The Gaussian basis sets were contracted to 20s17p/9s7p, 30s20p14d/11s7p7d, and 30s21p16d/14s7p7d and utilized in calculations of total energy and orbital energies of the (MnO1+)-Mn-5 and (YO1+)-Y-3 fragments to evaluate its quality in molecular studies. Finally, the contracted basis set for O atom was supplemented with one polarization function of d symmetry and used along with the other contracted basis sets (for Mn and Y) to calculate dipole moments, total energy, and total atomic charges in YMnO3 in space group D-6h. The analysis of those properties showed that is reasonable to believe that YMnO3 present behavior of piezoelectric material. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is employed to generate uncontracted 15s and 18s11p gaussian basis sets for the H, C and O atoms, respectively. These basis sets are then contracted to 3s and 4s H atom and 6s5p, for C and O atoms by a standard procedure. For quality evaluation of contracted basis sets in molecular calculations, we have accomplished calculations of total and orbital energies in the Hartree-Fock-Roothaaii (HFR) approach for CH, C(2) and CO molecules. The results obtained with the uncontracted basis sets are compared with values obtained with the standard D95, 6-311G basis sets and with values reported in the literature. The 4s and 6s5p basis sets are enriched with polarization and diffuse functions for atoms of the parent neutral systems and of the enolates anions (cycloheptanone enolate, 2,5-dimethyleyelopentanone enolate, 4-heptanone enolate, and di-isopropyl ketone enolate) from the literature, in order to assess their performance in ab initio molecular calculations, and applied for calculations of electron affinities of the enolates. The calculations were performed at the DFT (BLYP and B3LYP) and HF levels and compared with the corresponding experimental values and with those obtained by using other 6-3 1 + +G((*)) and 6-311 + +G((*)) basis sets from literature. For the enolates studied, the differences between the electron affinities obtained with GCHF basis sets, at the B3LYP level, and the experimental values are -0.001, -0,014, -0.001, and -0.001 eV. In this work, siloxane-poly(propylene oxide) discs (PPO disc) prepared using the sol-gel process were used as solid phase in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for the detection of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies. The HCV RNA from serum (genotype 1b) was submitted to the RT-PCR technique and subsequent amplification of the HCV core 408 pb. This fragment was cloned into expression vector pET42a and expressed in Escherichia coli as recombinant protein with glutathione S-transferase (GST). Cell cultures were grown and induced having a final concentration of 0.4 x 10(-3) mol L-1 of IPTG. After induction, the cells were harvested and the soluble fraction was analyzed using polyacrilamide gel 15% showing a band with an approximate molecular weight of 44 kDa, the expected size for this GST-fused recombinant protein. The recombinant protein was purified and continued by immunological detection using HCV-positive serum and showed no cross-reactivity with positive samples for other infectious diseases. An ELISA was established using 1.25 ng of recombinant protein per PPO disc, a dilution of 1: 10,000 and 1:40 for a peroxidase conjugate and serum, respectively, and solutions of hydrogen peroxide and 3,3',5,5'-tetra-methylbenzidine in a ratio of 1: 1. The proposed methodology was compared with the ELISA conventional polystyrene-plate procedure and the performance of the PPO discs as a matrix for immunodetection gave an easy synthesis, good performance and reproducibility for commercial application. Nowadays solid state chemists have the possibility of work with low temperature strategies to obtain solid state materials with appropriate physical and chemical properties for useful technological applications. Photonic core shell materials having a core and shell domains composed by a variety of compounds have been synthesized by different methods. In this work we used silica-germania soot prepared by vapor-phase axial deposition as a core where a nanoshell of Eu2O3 was deposited. A new sol-gel like method was used to obtain the Eu2O3 nanoshell coating the SiO2-GeO2 particles, which was prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The photophysical properties of Eu3+ were used to obtain information about the rare earth surrounding in the SiO2-GeO2@Eu2O3 material during the sintering process. The sintering process was followed by the luminescence spectra of Eu3+ and all the samples present the characteristic emission related to the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J=0, 1, 2, 3 and 4). The ratios of the D-5(0) -> F-7(2)/D-5(0) -> F-7(1) emission intensity for the SiO2-GeO2@Eu2O3 systems were calculated and it was observed an increase in its values, indicating a low symmetry around the Eu3+ as the temperature increases.

Queiroz BC, Cagliari MF, Amorim CF, Sacco IC. Muscle activation during four Pilates core stability exercises in quadruped position. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2010;91: 86-92.Objective: To compare the activity of stabilizing trunk and hip muscles in 4 variations of Pilates stabilizing exercises in the quadruped position.Design: Repeated-measures descriptive study.Setting: A biomechanics laboratory at a university school of medicine.Participants: Healthy subjects (N=19; mean age +/- SD, 31 +/- 5y; mean weight +/- SD, 60 +/- 11 kg; mean height +/- SD, 166 +/- 9cm) experienced in Pilates routines.Interventions: Surface electromyographic signals of iliocostalis, multifidus, gluteus maximus, rectus abdominis, and external and internal oblique muscles were recorded in 4 knee stretch exercises: retroverted pelvis with flexed trunk; anteverted pelvis with extended trunk; neutral pelvis with inclined trunk; and neutral pelvis with trunk parallel to the ground.Main Outcome Measures: Root mean square values of each muscle and exercise in both phases of hip extension and flexion, normalized by the maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Results: The retroverted pelvis with flexed trunk position led to significantly increased external oblique and gluteus maximus muscle activation. The anteverted pelvis with trunk extension significantly increased multifidus muscle activity. The neutral pelvis position led to significantly lower activity of all muscles. Rectus abdominis muscle activation to maintain body posture was similar in all exercises and was not influenced by position of the pelvis and trunk. Conclusions: Variations in the pelvic and trunk positions in the knee stretch exercises change the activation pattern of the multifidus, gluteus maximus, rectus abdominis, and oblique muscles. The lower level of activation of the rectus abdominis muscle suggests that pelvic stability is maintained in the 4 exercise positions.

We report the fabrication and characterization of the first guiding chalcogenide As(2)S(3) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with a suspended core. At 1.55 mu m, the measured losses are approximately 0.7 dB/m or 0.35 dB/m according to the MOF core size. The fibers have been designed to present a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) around 2 mu m. By pumping the fibers at 1.55 mu m, strong spectral broadenings are obtained in both 1.8 and 45-m-long fibers by using a picosecond fiber laser. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

The task of controlling urban traffic requires flexibility, adaptability and handling uncertain information spread through the intersection network. The use of fuzzy sets concepts convey these characteristics to improve system performance. This paper reviews a distributed traffic control system built upon a fuzzy distributed architecture previously developed by the authors. The emphasis of the paper is on the application of the system to control part of Campinas downtown area. Simulation experiments considering several traffic scenarios were performed to verify the capabilities of the system in controlling a set of coupled intersections. The performance of the proposed system is compared with conventional traffic control strategies under the same scenarios. The results obtained show that the distributed traffic control system outperforms conventional systems as far as average queues, average delay and maximum delay measures are concerned.

The one-dimensional coordination polymer of palladium(II) with pyrazolato (Pz -) and azide (N 3 -) as bridging ligands, of formula [Pd 3(μ-N 3)(μ-Pz) 5] n, has been prepared. From IR and Raman studies it was evidenced the exobidentate nature of pyrazole ligands as well the μ-1,1-bridging coordination of azido groups. NMR experiments showed two sets of broadened signals with different intensities indicating the presence of pyrazolato groups in distinct chemical environments. The proposed structure of [Pd 3(μ-N 3)(μ-Pz) 5] n consists of a zigzag ribbon in which each (Pz) 2Pd(Pz) 2 entity is bound to two stacked planar units [Pd(μ-Pz)(μ-N 3)Pd core] with very weak Pd-Pd interaction, based on UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Contracted GTF basis sets designed with aid of the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method for H(2S), O2-(1S), and Cr3+(4F) atomic species are applied to perform theoretical interpretation of the Raman spectrum of hexaaquachromium(III) ion. The 16s, 16s 10p, and 24s17p13d GTF basis sets were contracted to [4s] for H atom, [6s4p], and [9s6p3d] for O2- and Cr3+, respectively, by Dunning's scheme. For Cr3+, the [9s6p3d] basis set was enriched with f polarization function and used in combination com [4s] and [6s4p] in the study of our interest. The results obtained in this report show that the contracted GTF basis sets used are a useful alternative for the theoretical interpretation of Raman spectrum of hexaaquachromium(III) ion and that GCHF method is an effective alternative to selection of GTF basis sets for theoretical study of vibrational properties of poliatomic species. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. We establish the conditions under which it is possible to construct signal sets satisfying the properties of being geometrically uniform and matched to additive quotient groups. Such signal sets consist of subsets of signal spaces identified to integers rings ℤ[i] and ℤ[ω] in ℤ2. © 2008 KSCAM and Springer-Verlag.
