The basic photonic switching elements of practical importance are outlined. A detailed comparative study of photonic switching architectures is presented both for guided wave fabrics and free-space fabrics. The required equations for comparative study are obtained, after considering the parameters like bend losses, effects of waveguide crossings, etc. The potential areas of application of photonic switching are pointed out.

Suspensions of testicular germ cells from six species of mammals were prepared and stained for the DNA content with a fluorochrome (ethidium bromide) adopting a common technique and subjected to DNA flow cytometry. While uniform staining of the germ cells of the mouse, hamster, rat and monkey could be obtained by treating with 0.5% pepsin for 60 min followed by staining with ethidium bromide for 30 min, that of the guinea pig and rabbit required for optimal staining pepsinization for 90 min and treatment with ethidium bromide for 60 min. The procedure adopted here provided a uniform recovery of over 80% of germ cells with each one of the species tested and the cell population distributed itself according to the DNA content (expressed as C values) into 5 major classes-spermatogonia (2C), cells in S-phase, primary spermatocytes (4C), round spermatids (1C), and elongating/elongated spermatids (HC). Comparison of the DNA distribution pattern of the germ cell populations between species revealed little variation in the relative quantities of cells with 2C (8-11%), S-phase (6-9%), and 4C (6-9%) amount of DNA. Though the spermatid cell populations exhibited variations (1C:31-46%, HCI:7-20% and and HC2:11-25%) they represented the bulk of germ cells (70-80%). The overall conversion of 2C to 1C (1C:2C ratio) and meiotic transformation of 4C cells to IC (1C:4C ratio) kinetics were relatively constant between the species studied. The present study clearly demonstrates that DNA flow cytometry can be adopted with ease and assurance to quantify germ cell transformation and as such spermatogenesis by analysing a large number of samples with consistency both within and across the species barrier. Any variation from the norms in germ cell proportions observed following treatment, for e.g. hormonal stimulation or deprivation can then be ascribed due to a specific effect of the hormone/drug on single/multiple steps in germ cell transformation

We report here the role of remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) in the identification of geomorphic records and understanding of the local controls on the retreat of glaciers of the Baspa Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India. The geomorphic records mapped are accumulation zone, exposed ablation zone, moraine-covered ablation zone, snout, deglaciated valley, lateral moraine, medial moraine, terminal moraine and hanging glacier. Details of these features and stages of deglaciation have been extracted from RS data and mapped in a GIS environment. Glacial geomorphic data have been generated for 22 glaciers of the Baspa Valley. The retreat of glaciers has been estimated using the glacial maxima observed on satellite images. On the basis of percentage of retreat and the critical analysis of glacial geomorphic data for 22 glaciers of the Baspa Valley, they are classified into seven categories of very low to very very high retreat. From the analysis of the above 22 glaciers, it has been found that other than global warming, the retreat of glaciers of the Baspa Valley is inversely proportional to the size of the accumulation zone and the ratio of the moraine covered ablation/exposed ablation zone.

In recent years, parallel computers have been attracting attention for simulating artificial neural networks (ANN). This is due to the inherent parallelism in ANN. This work is aimed at studying ways of parallelizing adaptive resonance theory (ART), a popular neural network algorithm. The core computations of ART are separated and different strategies of parallelizing ART are discussed. We present mapping strategies for ART 2-A neural network onto ring and mesh architectures. The required parallel architecture is simulated using a parallel architectural simulator, PROTEUS and parallel programs are written using a superset of C for the algorithms presented. A simulation-based scalability study of the algorithm-architecture match is carried out. The various overheads are identified in order to suggest ways of improving the performance. Our main objective is to find out the performance of the ART2-A network on different parallel architectures. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Five villages undertaking joint forest management (JFM) were chosen in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka for assessing regeneration in plantations and nearby natural forests of the village. Species number, stem density, diversity index, similarity in species composition in less disturbed and disturbed forests and plantations in the village were compared. Stem density was low in all the disturbed forests; however, the species number was low in disturbed forests of three villages and high in two villages. Plantations showed lower diversity values compared to the adjacent natural forests. Regeneration in all less disturbed forests was better compared to the disturbed counterparts. Villages were ranked based on number of landless families, per, capita forest available and number of cut stems. Assessment of village forests using ranks indicates that parameters such as per capita availability, cut stems in the forests may determine the success of JFM.

This study presents the results of an experimental and analytical comparison of the flexural behavior of a high-strength concrete specimen (no conventional reinforcement) with an average plain concrete cube strength of nearly 65 MPa and containing trough shape steel fibers. Trough shape steel fibers with a volume fraction ranging from 0 to 1.5% and having a constant aspect ratio of 80 have been used in this study. Increased toughness and a more ductile stress-strain response were observed with an increase in fiber content, when the fibers were distributed over the full/partial depth of the beam cross section. Based on the tests, a robust analytical procedure has been proposed to establish the required partial depth to contain fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) so as to obtain the flexural capacity of a member with FRC over the full depth. It is expected that this procedure will help designers in properly estimating the required partial depth of fibers in composite sections for specific structural applications. Empirical and mechanistic relations have also been proposed in this study to establish the load-deflection behavior of high-strength FRC.

The cis-regulatory regions on DNA serve as binding sites for proteins such as transcription factors and RNA polymerase. The combinatorial interaction of these proteins plays a crucial role in transcription initiation, which is an important point of control in the regulation of gene expression. We present here an analysis of the performance of an in silico method for predicting cis-regulatory regions in the plant genomes of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and rice (Oryza sativa) on the basis of free energy of DNA melting. For protein-coding genes, we achieve recall and precision of 96% and 42% for Arabidopsis and 97% and 31% for rice, respectively. For noncoding RNA genes, the program gives recall and precision of 94% and 75% for Arabidopsis and 95% and 90% for rice, respectively. Moreover, 96% of the false-positive predictions were located in noncoding regions of primary transcripts, out of which 20% were found in the first intron alone, indicating possible regulatory roles. The predictions for orthologous genes from the two genomes showed a good correlation with respect to prediction scores and promoter organization. Comparison of our results with an existing program for promoter prediction in plant genomes indicates that our method shows improved prediction capability.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against secreted hemagglutinin (H) protein of rinderpest virus (RPV) expressed by a recombinant baculovirus were generated to characterize the antigenic sites on H protein and regions of functional significance. Three of the mAbs displayed hemagglutination inhibition activity and these mAbs were unable to neutralize virus infectivity. Western immunoblot analysis of overlapping deletion mutants indicated that three mAbs recognize antigenic regions at the extreme carboxy terminus (between amino acids 569 and 609) and the fourth mAb between amino acids 512 and 568. Using synthetic peptides, aa 569-577 and 575-583 were identified as the epitopes for E2G4 and D2F4, respectively. The epitopic domains of A12A9 and E2B6 mAbs were mapped to regions encompassing aa 527-554 and 588-609. Two epitopes spanning the extreme carboxy terminal region of aa 573 to 587 and 588 to 609 were shown to be immunodominant employing a competitive ELISA with polyclonal sera form vaccinated cattle. The D2F4 mAb which recognizes a unique epitope on RPV-H is not present on the closely related peste des petits ruminant virus FIN protein and this mAb could serve as a tool in the seromonitoring program after rinderpest vaccination. The most stable vinyl polyperoxide, namely, poly(indene peroxide) (PINDP), an alternating copolymer of indene and oxygen, was synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of indene. It was characterized by H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR, Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry studies. The overall activation energy for the degradation and the glass-transition temperature of PINDP were 47 kcal/mol and 327 K respectively, which were very high compared to those of other vinyl polyperoxides. The design and synthesis of agents that can abstract zinc from their [CCXX] (C=cysteine; X=cysteine/histidine) boxes by thioldisulfide exchange-having as control, the redox parities of the core sulfur ligands of the reagent and the enzyme, has been illustrated, and their efficiency demonstrated by monitoring the inhibition of the transcription of calf thymus DNA by E. coli RNA polymerase, which harbors two zinc atoms in their [CCXX] boxes of which one is exchangeable. Maximum inhibition possible with removal of the exchangeable zinc was seen with redox-sulfanilamide-glutamate composite. In sharp contrast, normal chelating agents (EDTA, phenanthroline) even in a thousand fold excess showed only marginal inhibition, thus supporting an exchange mechanism for the metal removal. In computational molecular biology, the aim of restriction mapping is to locate the restriction sites of a given enzyme on a DNA molecule. Double digest and partial digest are two well-studied techniques for restriction mapping. While double digest is NP-complete, there is no known polynomial-time algorithm for partial digest. Another disadvantage of the above techniques is that there can be multiple solutions for reconstruction. In this paper, we study a simple technique called labeled partial digest for restriction mapping. We give a fast polynomial time (O(n(2) log n) worst-case) algorithm for finding all the n sites of a DNA molecule using this technique. An important advantage of the algorithm is the unique reconstruction of the DNA molecule from the digest. The technique is also robust in handling errors in fragment lengths which arises in the laboratory. We give a robust O(n(4)) worst-case algorithm that can provably tolerate an absolute error of O(Delta/n) (where Delta is the minimum inter-site distance), while giving a unique reconstruction. We test our theoretical results by simulating the performance of the algorithm on a real DNA molecule. Motivated by the similarity to the labeled partial digest problem, we address a related problem of interest-the de novo peptide sequencing problem (ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA), 2000, pp. 389-398), which arises in the reconstruction of the peptide sequence of a protein molecule. We give a simple and efficient algorithm for the problem without using dynamic programming. The algorithm runs in time O(k log k), where k is the number of ions and is an improvement over the algorithm in Chen et al. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved.

In the framework of a project aimed at developing a reliable hydrogen generator for mobile polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), particular emphasis has been addressed to the analysis of catalysts able to assure high activity and stability in transient operations (frequent start-up and shut-down cycles). In this paper, the catalytic performance of 1 at.% Pt/ceria samples prepared by coprecipitation, impregnation and combustion, has been evaluated in the partial oxidation of methane. Methane conversion and hydrogen selectivity of 96 and 99%, respectively, associated with high stability during 100h of reaction under operative conditions (start-up and shut-down cycles), have been obtained. We have investigated the local electronic properties and the spatially resolved magnetoresistance of a nanostructured film of a colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) material by local conductance mapping (LCMAP) using a variable temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operating in a magnetic field. The nanostructured thin films (thickness ≈500nm) of the CMR material La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) on quartz substrates were prepared using chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. The CSD grown films were imaged by both STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Due to the presence of a large number of grain boundaries (GB's), these films show low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) which increases at lower temperatures. The measurement of spatially resolved electronic properties reveal the extent of variation of the density of states (DOS) at and close to the Fermi level (EF) across the grain boundaries and its role in the electrical resistance of the GB. Measurement of the local conductance maps (LCMAP) as a function of magnetic field as well as temperature reveals that the LFMR occurs at the GB. While it was known that LFMR in CMR films originates from the GB, this is the first investigation that maps the local electronic properties at a GB in a magnetic field and traces the origin of LFMR at the GB.
