Thermodynamic properties of Ca7V4O17 are measured for the first time using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating single crystal of CaF2 as the electrolyte over the temperature range from (900 to 1175) K. An equimolar mixture of CaO and CaF2 is used as the reference electrode and a mixture of Ca3V2O8, Ca7V4O17 and CaF2 as the measuring electrode. Both the electrodes are placed under flowing oxygen gas at ambient pressure. The standard Gibbs energy change for the reaction: 2Ca(3)V(2)O(8) + CaO -> Ca7V4O17; which is related to the chemical potential of CaO in the two-phase region (Ca3V2O8 + Ca7V4O17) of the pseudo-binary system CaO + V2O5, is obtained from the electromotive force of the cell as: Delta(r)G(o) +/- 127/(J . mol(-1)) = Delta mu(CaO) = -11453 + 8.273(T/K). The derived standard enthalpy of formation of Ca7V4O17 from elements in their normal standard states is ( 8208.97 +/- 8) kJ . mol (1) and its standard entropy is (560.05 +/- 7.5) J . K (1) . mol (1), both at T = 298.15 K. The results indicate that Ca7V4O17 decomposes into Ca3V2O8 and CaO at T = (1384 +/- 3) K.

We have analyzed the characteristics of electrodes made of TiO2 nanotubes, microspheres and commercially available nanoparticles for dye sensitized solar cell. The morphology of the electrodes and the formation of aggregates have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profiling technique. The concentration of Ti3+ type impurity state on the surface of these electrodes is quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Micro structural properties have been characterized by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method The optical properties of the electrodes such as band gap energy, the type of band formation and the diffuse reflectance are evaluated by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The photovoltaic characteristics of dye solar cell made of these electrodes have been evaluated and it is found that the characteristics of the TiO2 film alone can alter the overall conversion efficiency to a great extent. Additional analysis using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been carried out to probe the electron transport properties and charge collection efficiency of these electrodes.

The conserved stem domain of influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) is a target for broadly neutralizing antibodies and a potential vaccine antigen for induction of hetero-subtypic protection. The epitope of 12D1, a previously reported bnAb neutralizing several H3 subtype influenza strains, was putatively mapped to residues 76-106 of the CD-helix, also referred to as long alpha helix (LAH) of the HA stem. A peptide derivative consisting of wt-LAH residues 76-130 conjugated to keyhole limpet hemocyanin was previously shown to confer robust protection in mice against challenge with influenza strains of subtypes H3, H1, and H5 which motivated the present study. We report the design of multiple peptide derivatives of LAH with or without heterologous trimerization sequences and show that several of these are better folded than wt-LAH. However, in contrast to the previous study immunization of mice with wt-LAH resulted in negligible protection against a lethal homologous virus challenge, while some of the newly designed immunogens could confer weak protection. Combined with structural analysis of HA, our data suggest that in addition to LAH, other regions of HA are likely to significantly contribute to the epitope for 12D1 and will be required to elicit robust protection. In addition, a dynamic, flexible conformation of isolated LAH peptide may be required for eliciting a functional anti-viral response. Proteins 2013; 81:1759-1775. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper reports on the characterization of an integrated micro-fluidic platform for controlled electrical lysis of biological cells and subsequent extraction of intracellular biomolecules. The proposed methodology is capable of high throughput electrical cell lysis facilitated by nano-composite coated electrodes. The nano-composites are synthesized using Carbon Nanotube and ZnO nanorod dispersion in polymer. Bacterial cells are used to demonstrate the lysis performance of these nanocomposite electrodes. Investigation of electrical lysis in the microchannel is carried out under different parameters, one with continuous DC application and the other under DC biased AC electric field. Lysis in DC field is dependent on optimal field strength and governed by the cell type. By introducing the AC electrical field, the electrokinetics is controlled to prevent cell clogging in the micro-channel and ensure uniform cell dispersion and lysis. Lysis mechanism is analyzed with time-resolved fluorescence imaging which reveal the time scale of electrical lysis and explain the dynamic behavior of GFP-expressing E. coli cells under the electric field induced by nanocomposite electrodes. The DNA and protein samples extracted after lysis are compared with those obtained from a conventional chemical lysis method by using a UV-Visible spectroscopy and fluorimetry. The paper also focuses on the mechanistic understanding of the nano-composite coating material and the film thickness on the leakage charge densities which lead to differential lysis efficiency.

In the present paper, the ultrasonic strain sensing performance of large-area piezoceramic coating with Inter Digital Transducer (IDT) electrodes is studied. The piezoceramic coating is prepared using slurry coating technique and the piezoelectric phase is achieved by poling under DC field. To study the sensing performance of the piezoceramic coating with IDT electrodes for strain induced by the guided waves, the piezoceramic coating is fabricated on the surface of a beam specimen at one end and the ultrasonic guided waves are launched with a piezoelectric wafer bonded on another end. Often a wider frequency band of operation is needed for the effective implementation of the sensors in the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of various structures, for different types of damages. A wider frequency band of operation is achieved in the present study by considering the variation in the number of IDT electrodes in the contribution of voltage for the induced dynamic strain. In the present work, the fabricated piezoceramic coatings with IDT electrodes have been characterized for dynamic strain sensing applications using guided wave technique at various different frequencies. Strain levels of the launched guided wave are varied by varying the magnitude of the input voltage sent to the actuator. Sensitivity variation with the variation in the strain levels of guided wave is studied for the combination of different number of IDT electrodes. Piezoelectric coefficient e(11) is determined at different frequencies and at different strain levels using the guided wave technique.

We consider proper holomorphic mappings of equidimensional pseudoconvex domains in complex Euclidean space, where both source and target can be represented as Cartesian products of smoothly bounded domains. It is shown that such mappings extend smoothly up to the closures of the domains, provided each factor of the source satisfies Condition R. It also shown that the number of smoothly bounded factors in the source and target must be the same, and the proper holomorphic map splits as a product of proper mappings between the factor domains. We demonstrate the efficacy of amorphous macroporous carbon substrates as electrodes to support neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation in electric field mediated culture conditions. The electric field was applied perpendicular to carbon substrate electrode, while growing mouse neuroblastoma (N2a) cells in vitro. The placement of the second electrode outside of the cell culture medium allows the investigation of cell response to electric field without the concurrent complexities of submerged electrodes such as potentially toxic electrode reactions, electro-kinetic flows and charge transfer (electrical current) in the cell medium. The macroporous carbon electrodes are uniquely characterized by a higher specific charge storage capacity (0.2 mC/cm(2)) and low impedance (3.3 k Omega at 1 kHz). The optimal window of electric field stimulation for better cell viability and neurite outgrowth is established. When a uniform or a gradient electric field was applied perpendicular to the amorphous carbon substrate, it was found that the N2a cell viability and neurite length were higher at low electric field strengths (<= 2.5 V/cm) compared to that measured without an applied field (0 V/cm). While the cell viability was assessed by two complementary biochemical assays (MTT and LDH), the differentiation was studied by indirect immunostaining. Overall, the results of the present study unambiguously establish the uniform/gradient vertical electric field based culture protocol to either enhance or to restrict neurite outgrowth respectively at lower or higher field strengths, when neuroblastoma cells are cultured on porous glassy carbon electrodes having a desired combination of electrochemical properties. Using a solid-state electrochemical technique, thermodynamic properties of three sulfide phases (RhS0.882, Rh3S4, Rh2S3) in the binary system (Rh + S) are measured as a function of temperature over the range from (925 to 1275) K. Single crystal CaF2 is used as the electrolyte. The auxiliary electrode consisting of (CaS + CaF2) is designed in such a way that the sulfur chemical potential converts into an equivalent fluorine potential at each electrode. The sulfur potentials at the measuring electrodes are established by the mixtures of (Rh + RhS0.882), (RhS0.882 + Rh3S4) and (Rh3S4 + Rh2S3) respectively. A gas mixture (H-2 + H2S + Ar) of known composition fixes the sulfur potential at the reference electrode. A novel cell design with physical separation of rhodium sulfides in the measuring electrode from CaS in the auxiliary electrode is used to prevent interaction between the two sulfide phases. They equilibrate only via the gas phase in a hermetically sealed reference enclosure. Standard Gibbs energy changes for the following reactions are calculated from the electromotive force of three cells: 2.2667Rh (s) + S-2 (g) -> 2.2667RhS(0.882) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2330/(J . mol(-1)) = -288690 + 146.18 (T/K), 4.44RhS(0.882) (s) + S-2 (g) -> 1.48Rh(3)S(4) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2245/(J . mol(-1)) = -245596 + 164.31 (T/K), 4Rh(3)S(4) (s) + S-2 (g) -> 6Rh(2)S(3) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2490/(J . mol(-1)) = -230957 + 160: 03 (T/K). Standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of rhodium sulfides from elements in their normal standard states at T = 298.15 K are evaluated. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present investigation, the corrosive behaviour of Al 6061-TiN particulate composites prepared by liquid metallurgy has been studied in chloride medium using electroanalytical techniques such as Tafel, cyclic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Surface morphology of the sample electrodes was examined using scanning electron micrography and energy dispersive X-ray methods. X-ray diffraction technique was used to confirm inclusion of TiN particulates in the matrix alloy and identify the alloying elements and intermetallic compounds in the Al 6061 composites. Polarization studies indicate an increase in the corrosion resistance in composites compared to the matrix alloy. EIS study reveals that the polarization resistance (R (p)) increases with increase in TiN content in composites, thus confirming improved corrosion resistance in composites. The observed decrease in corrosion rate in the case of composites is due to decoupling between TiN particles and Al 6061 alloy. It is understood that after the initiation of corrosion, interfacial corrosion products may have decoupled the conducting ceramic TiN from Al 6061 matrix alloy thus eliminating the galvanic effect between them.

Donor-acceptor-donor-structured thiophene derivative-based conducting polymer poly(7,9-dithiophene-2yl-8H-cyclopentaa]acenaphthalene-8-one) was chemically synthesized. This polymer was used to modify both glassy-carbon and carbon-paste electrode, which was used to detect lead(II) ions present in water in the range of 1 mM to 0.1 mu M. Cyclic voltammetry confirms the formation of the co-ordination complex between the soft segment of polymer and the dissolved lead ion. Anodic stripping voltammetry was carried out by the modified electrode to determine the lower limit of detection of dissolved lead(II) species in the solution. Differential adsorptive stripping and impedance measurements were also conducted to find the lowest possible response of the as-synthesized polymer to lead(II) ion in water. The electrochemical performance of the modified electrodes at different pH (4, 7 and 9) environments was carried out by stripping voltammetry, to get optimum sensitivity and stability under these conditions. Finally, interference analysis was carried out to detect the modified electrode's sensitivity towards lead ion affinity in water.

This letter studies the impact of electrode segmentation on energy harvesting with piezoelectrics. For cases where the load can be distributed, it is concluded that segmentation of electrodes helps to improve energy content by minimizing surface currents. Using a ribbon of polyvinylidene fluoride under tension as an example, we show that using a six segmented electrode improves energy content by a factor of 2.5. Power delivery remains almost constant except for an anomalous increase when the number of segments is made large. Models are developed to predict improvements in energy content and power delivery.

A high-performance supercapacitor electrode based on unique 1D Co-Ni/Co3O4-NiO core/shell nano-heterostructures is designed and fabricated. The nano-heterostructures exhibit high specific capacitance (2013 F g(-1) at 2.5 A g(-1)), high energy and power density (23Wh kg(-1) and 5.5kW kg(-1), at the discharge current density of 20.8 A g(-1)), good capacitance retention and long cyclicality. The remarkable electrochemical property of the large surface area nano-heterostructures is demonstrated based on the effective nano-architectural design of the electrode with the coexistence of the two highly redox active materials at the surface supported by highly conducting metal alloy channel at the core for faster charge transport. Two new Ru(II)-complexes RuH(Tpms)(PPh3)(2)] 1 (Tpms - (C3H3N2)(3)CSO3, tris-(pyrazolyl) methane sulfonate) and Ru(OTf)(Tpms)(PPh3)(2)] 2 (OTf = CF3SO3) have been synthesized and characterized wherein Ru-H and Ru-OTf are the key reactive centers. Reaction of 1 with HOTf results in the Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(Tpms)(PPh3)(2)]OTf] complex 3, whereas reaction of 1 with Me3SiOTf affords the dihydrogen complex 3 and complex 1 through an unobserved sigma-silane intermediate. In addition, an attempt to characterize the sigma methane complex via reaction of complex 1 with CH3OTf yields complex 2 and free methane. On the other hand, reaction of Ru(OTf)(Tpms)(PPh3)(2)] 2 with H-2 and PhMe2SiH at low temperature resulted in sigma-H-2, 3 and a probable sigma-silane complexes, respectively. However, no sigma-methane complex was observed for the reaction of complex 2 with methane even at low temperature. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
