The importance of renewable energies in the context of the world energy production is nowadays unquestionable, namely in the case of the eolic energy, due to its specific advantages. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of energy are described, and a discussion of the evolution of the wind power installed is presented according to the data published by the different organisms involved. It is intended to show and explain the evolution of the wind power capacity installed in the European Union. Finally, it is discussed the Portuguese specificity characterized by a low wind power installed despite the high eolic potential available.

Living without electricity is nowadays unconceived. The economic growth and quality of life is strongly dependent on this source of energy. The search for new forms of producing electricity in order to minimise environmental impacts has lead to the adoption of renewable energies and to the improvement of new technologies which allow at the same time to reach high efficiency in the process of energy conversion from the chemical form to the electrical one. This article is about a case study of a natural gas turbine power plant with combined cycle, at “Tapada do Outeiro”, Portugal.

Droplet size and dynamics of blended palm oil-based fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and diesel oil spray were mechanistically investigated using a phase Doppler anemometry. A two-fluid atomizer was applied for dispersing viscous blends of blended biodiesel oil with designated flow rates. It was experimentally found that the atomizer could generate a spray with large droplets with Sauter mean diameters of ca. 30 mm at low air injection pressure. Such large droplets traveled with a low velocity along their trajectory after emerging from the nozzle tip. The viscosity of blended biodiesel could significantly affect the atomizing process, resulting in the controlled droplet size distribution. Blended biodiesel with a certain fraction of palm oil-based FAME would be consistently atomized owing to its low viscosity. However, the viscosity could exert only a small effect on the droplet velocity profile with the air injection pressure higher than 0.2 MPa.

Drop size and velocity distribution in a spray of fuel play an important role in determining combustion efficiency. The Phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) is a well-established technique allowing simultaneous measurement of velocity and size of droplets. In this work, effect of bio-substitute component on the size and velocity of biodiesel droplets which are generated by a two-fluid nozzle are investigated comprehensively using a PDA.

Droplet size distribution of biodiesel oil with various compositions was investigated in this work. The droplets generated by a two-fluid atomizer were measured by a commercial PDA. It was found that viscosity of the fuel has a strong effect on the drop size distribution. Additionally, effect of air injection pressures applied to atomize the spray was taken into account. Shear force induced by flow field exerts an effect on distribution of biodiesel droplets in atomized spray.

A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [pNIPAM]-based homo-polymer and co-polymer microgel particles were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerisation. The co-monomers were acrylic acid. 4-vinylpyridine. butyl acrylate, 4-vinylbiphenyl and vinyl laurate. Co-monomers were added at a concentration of 10% (w/w) relative to the base monomer pNIPAM for the preparation of each co-polymer microgel. The co-monomers chosen vary by their organic chain length, polarity and pH sensitivity, as these should influence how the particles behave in aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. The effect of adding different types of co-monomer into the microgel structure was investigated with respect to their dispersibility in different solvents. These microgel particles have shown useful application in the removal of water from biodiesel prepared from rape seed. Karl Fischer experiments showed that microgel particles can be used to reduce the water content in biodiesel to an acceptable level for incorporation into internal combustion engines. Measurements of electron capture and ionization of O-2 molecules in collisions with H+ and O+ ions have been made over an energy range 10 - 100 keV. Cross sections for dissociative and nondissociative interactions have been separately determined using coincidence techniques. Nondissociative channels leading to O-2(+) product formation are shown to be dominant for both the H+ and the O+ projectiles in the capture collisions and only for the H+ projectiles in the ionization collisions. Dissociative channels are dominant for ionizing collisions involving O+ projectiles. The energy distributions of the O+ fragment products from collisions involving H+ and O+ have also been measured for the first time using time-of-flight methods, and the results are compared with those from other related studies. These measurements have been used to describe the interaction of the energetic ions trapped in Jupiter's magnetosphere with the very thin oxygen atmosphere of the icy satellite Europa. It is shown that the ionization of oxygen molecules is dominated by charge exchange plus ion impact ionization processes rather than photoionization. In addition, dissociation is predominately induced through excitation of electrons into high-lying repulsive energy states ( electronically) rather than arising from momentum transfer from knock-on collisions between colliding nuclei, which are the only processes included in current models. Future modeling will need to include both these processes.
