The stable isotope study of monospecific planktonic foraminifer samples recovered at Sites 541 and 543 during Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 78A indicates a warming during the early Pliocene about 4.7 to 4.3 Ma. The changes in the late Pliocene oxygen isotope record around 2.9 to 2.7 Ma coincide with changes in the circulation pattern resulting from the closure of the Panama seaway and the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation. The Pleistocene record is characterized by 0.5 to 1.0 per mil fluctuations in the d18O record. These fluctuations reflect salinity changes, rather than temperature changes, as indicated by Globigerinoides ruber and G. sacculifer abundances. The salinity changes may be explained by a drifting of (1) the highly saline Central Water Mass of the southern Sargasso Sea, and (2) lower-salinity ocean water displaced by the northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone into the Caribbean region during cooler intervals.

Delta18O values of pore waters from the northern Barbados accretionary prism range from -0.3 to -3.6? and reflect pervasive reaction of volcanic ash to form smectite within the sedimentary sequence and continued low temperature alteration of basalt in the underlying ocean crust with the overprint of diffusive exchange between water in the sediment pores and the open ocean. Delta D values of pore waters in sediments sampled seaward of the deformation front drop from +5? at the sediment surface to -6? at the deepest levels sampled. These changes may also be related to alteration processes but remain largely enigmatic. Sediment deformation caused by impingement of the Caribbean plate on the Atlantic plate has instigated migration of chemically and isotopically distinct fluid along faults and coarse-grained sedimentary beds; delta18O values of pore waters are also locally affected by thrust stacking which increases diffusive pathlengths and possibly modifies diagenetic reaction rates in Pleistocene sediments. Migrating fluids are distinguished by anomalous delta18O values that are as much as 1? higher than those of surrounding fluids. Uncertainties in hydrogen isotope fractionation resulting from processes occurring under these conditions hinder identification of the hydrogen isotope composition of expelled fluid. Stable isotope analyses of pore waters help constrain the fluid migration history of the accretionary prism by limiting the source of fluids, the paths along which fluid flows, and the timing of faulting and subsequent fluid flow.

Site 672 is located on the Atlantic abyssal plain to the east of the Lesser Antilles forearc region. It serves as a stratigraphic reference section for sediments entering the Barbados accretionary prism. A relatively complete Pliocene through lower Pleistocene section was recovered from Site 672 that contains a moderately well-preserved population of benthic foraminifers. Q-mode factor analysis of the benthic population data identified three Pliocene-Pleistocene assemblages that inhabited this site. The Factor 1 fauna, characterized by Nuttallides umboniferus, is commonly associated with the presence of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). The Factor 2 assemblage is characterized by Globocassidulina subglobosa, Epistominella exigua, and a combined category of unilocular species. The Factor 3 assemblage is characterized by Epistominella exigua, and Planulina wuellerstorfi. The Factor 2 and 3 faunas are associated with bottom water significantly warmer than that preferred by the Factor 1 assemblage. The distribution of these assemblages has been used to distinguish three climatic intervals in the abyssal environment during the Pliocene-Pleistocene. An early Pliocene warm interval occurred from the Ceratolithus rugosus Subzone to the middle of the Discoaster tamalis Subzone. The upper Pliocene is characterized by oscillations between the Factor 1 and Factor 2 assemblages, which suggests climatic deterioration and increased pulses of AABW flow. The persistence of an essentially modern (Factor 1) fauna throughout the early Pleistocene suggests full glacial development at both poles and a substantial volume of AABW production.

Accelerator mass spectrometer 14C dated stable isotope data from Neogloboquadrina pachyerma in cores raised from the Mendeleyev Ridge and slope provide evidence for significant influx of meltwater to the western Arctic Ocean during the early part of marine oxygen isotope stage 1 (OIS 1) and during several intervals within OIS 3. The strongest OIS 3 meltwater event occurred before ca. 45 ka (conventional radiocarbon age) and was probably related to the deglaciation at the beginning of OIS 3. Major meltwater input to the western Arctic Ocean during the last deglaciation coincides closely with the maximum rate of global sea-level rise as determined from the Barbados sea-level record, demonstrating a strong link between the global record and changes in the central Arctic Ocean. OIS 2, which includes the last glacial maximum, is very condensed or absent in the cores. Abundance and d13C values for N. pachyderma in the middle part of OIS 3 are similar to modern values, indicating high productivity and seasonal ice-free areas along the Arctic margin at that time. These records indicate that the Arctic Ocean was a source of heat and moisture to the northern polar atmosphere during parts of OIS 3.

The strength and geometry of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is tightly coupled to climate on glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales, but has proved difficult to reconstruct, particularly for the Last Glacial Maximum. Today, the return flow from the northern North Atlantic to lower latitudes associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation reaches down to approximately 4,000 m. In contrast, during the Last Glacial Maximum this return flow is thought to have occurred primarily at shallower depths. Measurements of sedimentary 231Pa/230Th have been used to reconstruct the strength of circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean, but the effects of biogenic silica on 231Pa/230Th-based estimates remain controversial. Here we use measurements of 231Pa/230Th ratios and biogenic silica in Holocene-aged Atlantic sediments and simulations with a two-dimensional scavenging model to demonstrate that the geometry and strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are the primary controls of 231Pa/230Th ratios in modern Atlantic sediments. For the glacial maximum, a simulation of Atlantic overturning with a shallow, but vigorous circulation and bulk water transport at around 2,000 m depth best matched observed glacial Atlantic 231Pa/230Th values. We estimate that the transport of intermediate water during the Last Glacial Maximum was at least as strong as deep water transport today.
