The present work is focused on studying two issues: the “teamwork” generic competence and the “academic motivation. Currently the professional profile of engineers has a strong component of teamwork. On the other hand, motivational profile of students determines their tendencies when they come to work in team, as well as their performance at work. In this context we suggest four hypotheses: (H1) students improve their teamwork capacity by specific training and carrying out a set of activities integrated into an active learning process; (H2) students with higher mastery motivation have better attitude towards team working; (H3) students with higher mastery motivation obtain better results in academic performance; and (H4) students show different motivation profiles in different circumstances: type of courses, teaching methodologies, different times of the learning process. This study was carried out with computer science engineering students from two Spanish universities. The first results point to an improvement in teamwork competence of students if they have previously received specific training in facets of that competence. Other results indicate that there is a correlation between the motivational profiles of students and their perception about teamwork competence. Finally, and contrary to the initial hypothesis, these profiles appear to not influence significantly the academic performance of students.

The purpose of this study is to work out how a clear and motivated task goal set for the students can develop several skills that are not only useful in their specific academic contexts but also serve to reinforce links and cooperation with the labor market. The following research on skills was taken during one academic year. The students collected advertisements likely to be selected in a near future by themselves as possibilities to apply for a job. The advertisements selected were 120, and all of them were published on the internet either in jobs links or located by the students themselves in the web-practices of their choice. All the advertisements chosen by the students provided us with a skill list focused on architectural profiles. To conclude, academic research skills versus future motivation jobs positions are fruitful paths to conduct successful students´response at job interviews.

This study examines the relationships between multiple intelligences, academic achievement and motor performance in a group of secondary school children. Four hundred and eighty schoolchildren participated in this study (171 female and 309 male) with an average age of 13.33 years (SD: 1.41). The Revised self-efficacy Inventory for Multiple Intelligences (IAIM-R) and the motor test Sportcomp were applied, and the average results of the academic year they had made were obtained. The analysis of the results showed how female scored significantly higher on the Linguistic, Spatial and Interpersonal intelligences, and older pupils scored significantly higher on the linguistic and naturalistic intelligences. It was the logical-mathematical intelligence which showed significant relationships with academic performance and it was the intelligence that better predicted this achievement. It was the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence that was significantly related to motor competence and the best intelligence that predicted its achievement. Finally, indicate that schoolchildren with better scores in the motor test were those who scored higher in both academic achievement and all the multiple intelligences, with the exception of musical intelligence.

Computer programming is known to be one of the most difficult courses for students in the first year of engineering. They are faced with the challenge of abstract thinking and gaining programming skills for the first time. These skills are acquired by continuous practicing from the start of the course. In order to enhance the motivation and dynamism of the learning and assessment processes, we have proposed the use of three educational resources namely screencasts, self-assessment questionnaires and automated grading of assignments. These resources have been made available in Moodle which is a Learning Management System widely used in education environments and adopted by the Telecommunications Engineering School at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Both teachers and students can enhance the learning and assessment processes through the use of new educational activities such as self-assessment questionnaires and automated grading of assignments. On the other hand, multimedia resources such as screencasts can guide students in complex topics. The resources proposed allow teachers to improve their tutorial actions since they provide immediate feedback and comments to students without the enormous effort of manual correction and evaluation by teachers specially taking into account the large number of students enrolled in the course. In this paper we present the case study where three proposed educational resources were applied. We describe the special features of the course and explain why the use of these resources can both enhance the students? motivation and improve the teaching and learning processes. Our research work was carried out on students attending the "Computer programming" course offered in the first year of a Telecommunications Engineering degree at UPM. This course is mandatory and has more than 450 enrolled students. Our purpose is to encourage the motivation and dynamism of the learning and assessment processes.

ABSTRACT Despite the undeniable physical and psychological benefits that physical activity has on health, a significant drop in the level of physical activity during adolescence has been observed over the last few decades. Physical education (PE) is present in the early stages of educational curricula of all countries, creating an environment in which children and adolescents can maintain daily contact with sport and physical activity during the period of compulsory education. There is thus a growing interest in research within this context, helping to draw conclusions aimed at reversing the progressive decline of physical activity in this age bracket. The work presented here focuses on adolescence – a period particularly sensitive when faced with declining rates of physical activity. Relying on three of the most important recent theoretical frameworks – Achievement Goal Theory, Self-Determination Theory and Flow Theory – we have carried out a design using three complementary studies that allow us to advance the understanding of variables affecting this reality. The first two studies employ a correlational methodology while the third follows a quasi-experimental design. The objectives of the first study, with the participation of 3990 PE students aged 12 to 18 from Spain, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador, were: a) to establish motivational profiles in physical education students taking into consideration motivational orientations, intrinsic motivation and dispositional flow; b) to check the possible stability of the established profiles in the four countries; and c) to analyze the relationship between motivational profiles and both current levels of physical activity and intention to be physically active in the future. Results revealed the existence of three motivational profiles: low-moderate motivation profile, high motivation and low ego profile and high motivation profile. Similarities were found across the four countries, which presents the possibility that sharing the same mother tongue might influence the existence of similar behavioral patterns. Amongst the profiles that showed the highest levels of intrinsic motivation, dispositional flow and task orientation with practice variables, ego orientation became apparent as a differentiating element. Higher levels of ego orientation correlated with higher levels both in current level of physical activity and intention to be physically active in the future. In the second study, with the participation of 365 PE students aged 12 to 16 from Spain, Argentina and Colombia, an explanatory model of the intention to be physically active within the low-moderate motivation profile was tested, including dispositional flow as an influence variable together with motivational orientations and intrinsic motivation. The structural model equation in the low-moderate motivation profile shows some differences with respect to findings of similar studies using heterogeneous samples in motivational profiles. It was found that ego orientation, task orientation and intrinsic motivation predicted dispositional flow. No significant effects of task orientation on intrinsic motivation, or of intrinsic motivation on intention to be physically active in the future were found. Dispositional flow emerged as a mediator between both motivational orientations and intention, acquiring an important role in the prediction of future intentions to be physically active in adolescents who show low levels of motivation towards physical education. In the last of the three studies, with the participation of 53 PE students drawn from two classes in the second year of secondary education aged 13 to 15, the effect of an intervention to support basic psychological needs was tested against the satisfaction of these needs, intrinsic motivation, disposition to experience flow and intention to be physically active in the future. Alongside this, the aforementioned intervention was tested on certain variables present in the teaching-learning process such as fun, learning and taste for the activity and methodology. Supportive intervention was effective in improving all the motivational variables, except for the satisfaction of the relatedness variable, which may be more difficult to modify as class groups tend to remain stable throughout this educational state. Students in the experimental condition showed higher levels of fun, learning and taste for the content and methodology.

Why do people become archivists? Historically (and anecdotally) it was a deep love of musty, old records that drew people to the profession. While there have been many other motivating forces that inspired would-be archivists, it is most often that one hears of people seeking jobs in archives for love of “the stuff,” as evidenced in Kate Thiemer’s blog post, Honest tips for wannabe archivists (2012). As a result of the continually advancing presence of digitized and born digital archival collections, the physical nature of archival “stuff” is changing. While there remains the physical imprint of digital information on floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, hard drives, and old computers; the aspects of these physical artifacts might not evoke the same visceral pull to the profession as musty, raspy, paper-based documents. In light of this shift in physical presentation of information, we are faced with the question: how does love of archival “stuff” translate to work in digital archives? What is and/or will be the pull to become a digital archivist? To answer these questions, we will perform a survey-based study where we will invite archivists who work with both traditional and digital archival material to answer questions related to the aspects of their work that inspired or motivated them to join the profession. What motivates people to become archivists? What aspects of digital archives do or can potentially motivate people to seek out a career as an archivist? What, if any, motivational factors for becoming a traditional archivist are the same as those for becoming a digital archivist? What, if any, motivational factors for becoming a traditional archivist are different from those for becoming a digital archivist? By answering these questions, we hope to expand the archival discussion on what it means to be an archivist in the digital age. What compelling intrinsic, evidential, or informational values are present in digital archival content that will draw professionals to the field? Are there other values inherent in digital content that are currently unexplored? In our poster, we will present our discussion of the topic, our survey design, and results we have at the time of the Institute. Thiemer, K. (2012). Honest tips for wannabe archivists. The impending mass retirement of the Baby Boom generation in the United States may cause a drastic talent drain. Companies should pay attention to this upcoming problem now to alleviate an exodus by encouraging Baby Boomers to continue working past their normal retirement age. One solution is to offer them effective incentives. The most compelling incentives for Baby Boomers are the ability to choose their own hours (how many hours they wish to work, and when they wish to work them), the ability to telecommute from wherever they choose, and the offer of extra health care benefits.

The goal of this project is to determine whether or not coaching, as a part of performance management, results in increased employee motivation, ultimately impacting employee performance. Teletech's customer service group was a case study where their effectiveness of performance management through coaching was analyzed. The data for this research was gathered from interviews of two of TeleTech's managers, and an employee survey created by the author. The results reveal that most participants felt more motivated after their coaching sessions, changed their behavior based on feedback during coaching, resulting in improved performance. Therefore, the results of the project show that regular coaching, as part of performance management, results in improved employee satisfaction and motivation, resulting in increased productivity.

This work presents the main theories and models formulated with the purpose of offering a global overview on the acquisition of knowledge and skills involved in the initial development of expert competence. Setting from this background, we developed an empirical work whose main purpose is to define those factors in a complex learning situation such as chapter-sized in a knowledge-rich domain. The results obtained in a sample of Master students reveal that the several variables intervening, such as the qualitative organization of knowledge, intellectual ability, motivation, the deliberate use of strategies, and a rich learning environment, contribute in an independent way to provide an explanation for the acquired knowledge.

As a result of studies examining factors involved in the learning process, various structural models have been developed to explain the direct and indirect effects that occur between the variables in these models. The objective was to evaluate a structural model of cognitive and motivational variables predicting academic achievement, including general intelligence, academic self-concept, goal orientations, effort and learning strategies. The sample comprised of 341 Spanish students in the first year of compulsory secondary education. Different tests and questionnaires were used to evaluate each variable, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was applied to contrast the relationships of the initial model. The model proposed had a satisfactory fit, and all the hypothesised relationships were significant. General intelligence was the variable most able to explain academic achievement. Also important was the direct influence of academic self-concept on achievement, goal orientations and effort, as well as the mediating ability of effort and learning strategies between academic goals and final achievement.

The objective of this study is to identify possible combinations of multiple goals that lead to different goal orientation profiles and to determine whether there are significant group differences in self-concept dimensions. The Achievement Goals Tendencies Questionnaire (AGTQ) and the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (SDQ-II) were administered to a sample of 2,022 students of Compulsory Secondary education, ranging in age from 12 to 16 years (M = 13.81, SD = 1.35). Cluster analysis identified four profiles of motivational goals: a group of students with a generalized high motivation profile, a group of students with generalized low motivation profile, a group of students with a predominance of learning goals and achievement goals, and a last group of students with a predominance of achievement goals and social reinforcement goals. Results reveal statistically significant differences among the profiles obtained regarding self-concept dimensions.

Academic goals and academic self-attributions are relevant variables in school settings. The objective of this study is to identify whether there are combinations of multiple goals that lead to different motivational profiles and to determine whether there are significant differences between the groups obtained regarding causal attributions of success and failure (ability, effort, or external causes) in Mathematics and Language and Literature, and in overall academic performance. The Goal Achievement Tendencies Questionnaire (AGTQ) and the Sydney Attribution Scale (SAS) were administered to a sample of 2022 students of compulsory secondary education, ranging in age from 12 to 16 years (M = 13.81, SD = 1.35). Cluster analysis identified four motivational profiles: a group of students with a high generalized motivation profile, a group of students with low generalized motivation profile, a group of students with predominance of learning goals and achievement goals, and a final group of students with predominance of social reinforcement goals. Results revealed statistically significant differences between the profiles obtained in academic self-attributions.

The present study examined the predictive effects of gender, intellectual ability, self-concept, motivation, learning strategies, popularity and parent involvement on academic achievement. Hiearchical regression analysis were performed with six steps in which each variable was included, among a sample of 1398 high school students (mean age = 12.5; standard deviation = .67) of eight education centers from the province of Alicante (Spain). The results revealed significant predictive effects of all of the variables, explaining 59.1% of the total variance.
