We present ab initio studies of photoelectron spectra for above threshold detachment (ATD) of F- anions in short, 1300 nm and 1800 nm laser pulses. We identify and assess the importance of electron rescattering in strong-field photodetachment of a negative ion through comparison with an analytic, Keldysh-type approach, demonstrating the capability of ab-initio computation in the challenging near-IR regime. We further assess the influence of the strong electron correlation on the photodetachment.

The solubility of carbon dioxide in five tetraalkylphosphonium superbase ionic liquids, namely the trihexyltetradecylphoshonium phenoxide, trihexyltetradecylphoshonium benzotriazolide, trihexyltetradecylphoshonium benzimidazolide, trihexyltetradecylphoshonium 1,2,3-triazolide, and trihexyltetradecylphoshonium 1,2,4-triazolide was studied experimentally under dry and wet conditions at 22 A degrees C and at atmospheric pressure, using a gravimetric saturation technique. The effects of anion structure and of the presence or absence of water in the solution on the carbon dioxide solubility were then deduced from the data. H-1 and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations were also conducted to probe the interactions in these solutions, as carbon dioxide and water can compete in the ionic liquid structure during the absorption process. Additionally, the viscosity of selected superbase ionic liquids was measured under dry and wet conditions, in the presence or absence of CO2, to evaluate their practical application in carbon dioxide capture processes. Finally, the recyclability of the trihexyltetradecylphoshonium 1,2,4-triazolide under dry and wet conditions was determined to probe the ability of selected solvents to solubilize chemically a high concentration of carbon dioxide and then release it in a low energy demand process.

The dissolution of MnS inclusions could induce pitting corrosion in stainless steels, but its dissolution mechanism is poorly understood at the atomic scale. With the help of ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, one inevitable step in the dissolution of MnS is studied by simulating the process of one Mn ion leaving the surface. The reaction mechanism is determined to contain three steps with two large barriers and a small one, leading to two slow steps in the Mn ion dissolution. Comparing to the Na ion dissolution from NaCl, the barriers of the Mn ion dissolution are much larger, which is a reflection of their different electronic structures.

Ab initio total energy calculations within a density functional theory framework have been performed for CO and atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. Optimised geometries and chemisorption energies for CO and O on four high-symmetry sites, namely the top, bridge, fee hollow and hcp hollow sites, are presented, the coverage in all cases being 0.25 ML. The differences in CO adsorption energies between these sites are found to be small, suggesting that the potential energy surface for CO diffusion across Pt(111) is relatively flat. The 5 sigma and 2 pi molecular orbitals of CO are found to contribute to bonding with the metal. Some mixing of the 4 sigma and 1 pi molecular orbitals with metal states is also observed. For atomic oxygen, the most stable adsorption site is found to be the fee hollow site, followed in decreasing order of stability by the hcp hollow and bridge sites, with the top site being the least stable. The differences in chemisorption energies between sites for oxygen are larger than in the case of CO, suggesting a higher barrier to diffusion for atomic oxygen. The co-adsorption of CO and O has also been investigated. Calculated chemisorption energies for CO on an O/fcc-precovered surface show that of the available chemisorption sites, the top site at the oxygen atom's next-nearest neighbour surface metal atom is the most stable, with the other four sites calculated bring at least 0.29 eV less stable. The trend of CO site stability in the coadsorption system is explained in terms of a 'bonding competition' model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We have performed ab initio density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on Ru(0001). Several reaction pathways and transition states are identified. A much higher reaction barrier compared to that on Pt(111) is determined, confirming that the Ru is very inactive for CO oxidation under UHV conditions. The origin of the reaction barrier was analyzed. It is found that in the transition state the chemisorbed O atom sits in an unfavorable bonding site and a significant competition for bonding with the same substrate atoms occurs between the CO and the chemisorbed O, resulting in the high barrier. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the activation of the chemisorbed O atom from the initial hcp hollow site (the most stable site) to the bridge site is the crucial step for the reaction. The CO oxidation on Ru(0001) via the Eley-Rideal mechanism has also been investigated. A comparison with previous theoretical work has been made. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Ab initio total energy calculations within the density functional theory framework have been used to study the adsorption of CH2 and H as well as the coadsorption of CH2 and H on Ni(111). H binds strongly at threefold hollow sites with calculated adsorption energies of 2.60 and 2.54 eV at the face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) hollow sites, respectively. Adsorption energies and H-Ni distances are found to agree well with both experimental and theoretical results. CH2 adsorbs strongly at all high symmetry sites with calculated adsorption energies of 3.26, 3.22, 3.14 and 2.36 eV at the fcc, hcp, bridge and top sites, respectively. Optimized structures are reported at all sites, and, in the most stable hollow sites there is considerable internal reorganization of the CH2 fragment. The CH2 molecule is tilted, the hydrogens are inequivalent and the C-H bonds are lengthened relative to the gas phase. In the CH2-H coadsorption systems the adsorbates have a tendency to move toward bridge sites. The bonding of all adsorbates to the surface is analyzed in detail. Ab initio total energy calculations within the Density Functional Theory framework were carried out for Pt(111), Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO, Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O) to provide an insight into the interaction between CO and O on metal surfaces, an important issue in CO oxidation, and also in promotion and poisoning effects of catalysis. The geometrical structures of these systems were optimized with respect to the total energy, the results of which agree with existing experimental values very well. It is found that (i) the local structures of Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O), such as the bond lengths of C-O, C-Pt, and O-Pt (chemisorbed O atom with Pt), are almost the same as that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, respectively, (ii) the total valence charge density distributions in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O) are very similar to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO, except in the region of the chemisorbed oxygen atom, and also nearly identical to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, apart from in the region of the chemisorbed CO, and (iii) the chemisorption energy of CO on a precovered Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O and the chemisorption energy of O on a precovered Pt(111)-p(2x2)CO are almost equal to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, respectively. These results indicate that the interaction between CO and chemisorbed oxygen on a metal surface is mainly shore range in nature. The discussions of Pt-CO and Pt-O bonding and the interaction between CO and the chemisorbed oxygen atom on Pt(111) are augmented by local densities of states and real space distributions of quantum states.

Ab initio total energy calculations using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation have been performed for the chemisorption of oxygen atoms on a Pt{100}-(1 x 1) slab. Binding energies for the adsorption of oxygen on different high-symmetry sites are presented. The bridge site is the most stable at a coverage of 0.5 ML, followed by the fourfold hollow site. The atop site is the least stable. This finding is rationalized by analyzing the ''local structures'' formed upon oxygen chemisorption. The binding energies and heats of adsorption at different oxygen coverages show that pairwise repulsive interactions are considerably stronger between oxygen atoms occupying fourfold sites than those occupying bridge sites. Analysis of the partial charge densities associated with Bloch states demonstrates that the O-Pt bond is considerably more localized at the bridge site. These effects cause a sharp drop in the heats of adsorption for oxygen on hollow sites when the coverage is increased from 0.25 to 0.5 ML. Mixing between oxygen p orbitals and Pt d orbitals can be observed over the whole metal d-band energy range.

The chemisorption of CO on metal surfaces is widely accepted as a model for understanding chemical bonding between molecules and solid surfaces, but is nevertheless still a controversial subject. Ab initio total energy calculations using density functional theory with gradient corrections for CO chemisorption on an extended Pd{110} slab yield good agreement with experimental adsorption energies. Examination of the spatial distribution of individual Bloch states demonstrates that the conventional model for CO chemisorption involving charge donation from CO 5 sigma states to metal states and back-donation from metal states into CO 2 pi states is too simplistic, but the computational results provide direct insight into the chemical bonding within the framework of orbital mixing (or hybridisation). The results provide a sound basis for understanding the bonding between molecules and metal surfaces.

Ab initio total energy calculations have been performed for CO chemisorption on Pd(110). Local density approximation (LDA) calculations yield chemisorption energies which are significantly higher than experimental values but inclusion of the generalised gradient approximation (GGA) gives better agreement. In general, sites with higher coordination of the adsorbate to surface atoms lead to a larger degree of overbinding with LDA, and give larger corrections with GGA. The reason is discussed using a first-order perturbation approximation. It is concluded that this may be a general failure of LDA for chemisorption energy calculations. This conclusion may be extended to many surface calculations, such as potential energy surfaces for diffusion.

We present measurements of the complex ion structure of warm dense carbon close to the melting line at pressures around 100 GPa. High-pressure samples were created by laser-driven shock compression of graphite and probed by intense laser-generated x-ray sources with photon energies of 4.75 keV and 4.95 keV. High-efficiency crystal spectrometers allow for spectrally resolving the scattered radiation. Comparing the ratio of elastically and inelastically scattered radiation, we find evidence for a complex bonded liquid that is predicted by ab-initio quantum simulations showing the influence of chemical bonds under these conditions. Using graphite samples of different initial densities we demonstrate the capability of spectrally resolved x-ray scattering to monitor the carbon solid-liquid transition at relatively constant pressure of 150 GPa. Showing first single-pulse scattering spectra from cold graphite of unprecedented quality recorded at the Linac Coherent Light Source, we demonstrate the outstanding possibilities for future high-precision measurements at 4th Generation Light Sources.

A counterintuitive scheme to produce ultracold hydrogen via fragmentation of laser cooled diatomic hydrides is presented where the final atomic H temperature is inversely proportional to the mass of the molecular parent. In addition, the critical density for formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at a fixed temperature is reduced by a factor (mH/mMH)3/2 over directly cooled hydrogen atoms. The narrow Feshbach resonances between a S01 atom and hydrogen are well suited to a tiny center of mass energy release necessary during fragmentation. With the support of ab initio quantum chemistry, it is demonstrated that BaH is an ideal diatomic precursor that can be laser cooled to a Doppler temperature of ∼26μK with just two rovibronic transitions, the simplest molecular cooling scheme identified to date. Preparation of a hydrogen atom gas below the critical BEC temperature Tc is feasible with present cooling technology, with optical pulse control of the condensation process.

One-dimensional monatomic chains are promising candidates for technical applications in the field of nanoelectronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical and optical properties. In particular, we investigate the mechanical properties including Young's modulus, ultimate strength and ultimate strain, which are necessities for the stability of the materials by the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics in this work. The comparative studies for the alternating carbon-nitrogen (C3N2) chain and carbon chains (carbyne) of different lengths show that the carbon-nitrogen (C-N) chain is obviously stronger and stiffer than carbynes. Thus the C-N chain, which has been found in decomposition products of the nitromethane explosive simulations, could be a superior nano-mechanical material than the carbyne chain. Furthermore, it is found that the bond order of weakest bond in monatomic chains is positively correlated with Young's modulus and ultimate strength of materials.

The reduction of CO2 on copper electrodes has attracted great attentions in the last decades, since it provides a sustainable approach for energy restore. During the CO2 reduction process, the electron transfer to COads is experimentally suggested to be the crucial step. In this work, we examine two possible pathways in CO activation, i.e. to generate COHads and CHOads, respectively, by performing the state-of-the-art constrained ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on the charged Cu(100) electrode under aqueous conditions, which is close to the realistic electrochemical condition. The free energy profile in the formation of COHads via the coupled proton and electron transfer is plotted. Furthermore, by Bader charge analyses, a linear relationship between C-O bond distance and the negative charge in CO fragment is unveiled. The formation of CHOads is identified to be a surface catalytic reaction, which requires the adsorption of H atom on the surface first. By comparing these two pathways, we demonstrate that kinetically the formation of COHads is more favored than that of CHOads, while CHOads is thermodynamically more stable. This work reveals that CO activation via COHads intermediate is an important pathway in electrocatalysis, which could provide some insights into CO2 electroreduction over Cu electrodes.

Noncollinear four-wave-mixing (FWM) techniques at near-infrared (NIR), visible, and ultraviolet frequencies have been widely used to map vibrational and electronic couplings, typically in complex molecules. However, correlations between spatially localized inner-valence transitions among different sites of a molecule in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range have not been observed yet. As an experimental step toward this goal, we perform time-resolved FWM spectroscopy with femtosecond NIR and attosecond XUV pulses. The first two pulses (XUV-NIR) coincide in time and act as coherent excitation fields, while the third pulse (NIR) acts as a probe. As a first application, we show how coupling dynamics between odd- and even-parity, inner-valence excited states of neon can be revealed using a two-dimensional spectral representation. Experimentally obtained results are found to be in good agreement with ab initio time-dependent R-matrix calculations providing the full description of multielectron interactions, as well as few-level model simulations. Future applications of this method also include site-specific probing of electronic processes in molecules.
