The increased emphasis within Europe on the role of second-tier cities has implications for the ways in which these urban centres are considered within national spatial planning strategies. In centralised, monocentric states like Ireland, there has been a general ambivalence towards urban policy for cities outside the capital city, and historically this has prevented the development of a strong, diversified urban hierarchy undermining prospects for balanced regional development. This paper examines the extent to which a new found emphasis on Ireland’s second-tier cities which emerged in the ‘Gateways’ policy of the National Spatial Strategy (NSS, 2002) was matched by subsequent political and administrative commitment to facilitate the development of these urban centres. Following a discussion of the position of second-tier cities in an international context and a brief overview of recent demographic and economic trends, the paper assesses the relative performance of Ireland’s second-tier cities in influencing development trends, highlighting a comprehensive failure to deliver compact urban growth. In this context, the paper then discusses the implications of current development plans for the second-tier cities and proposals for Irish local government reform for securing compact urban development.

The present doctoral thesis discusses the ways to improve the performance of driving simulator, provide objective measures for the road safety evaluation methodology based on driver’s behavior and response and investigates the drivers' adaptation to the driving assistant systems. The activities are divided into two macro areas; the driving simulation studies and on-road experiments. During the driving simulation experimentation, the classical motion cueing algorithm with logarithmic scale was implemented in the 2DOF motion cueing simulator and the motion cues were found desirable by the participants. In addition, it found out that motion stimuli could change the behaviour of the drivers in terms of depth/distance perception. During the on-road experimentations, The driver gaze behaviour was investigated to find the objective measures on the visibility of the road signs and reaction time of the drivers. The sensor infusion and the vehicle monitoring instruments were found useful for an objective assessment of the pavement condition and the drivers’ performance. In the last chapter of the thesis, the safety assessment during the use of level 1 automated driving “ACC” is discussed with the simulator and on-road experiment. The drivers’ visual behaviour was investigated in both studies with innovative classification method to find the epochs of the distraction of the drivers. The behavioural adaptation to ACC showed that drivers may divert their attention away from the driving task to engage in secondary, non-driving-related tasks.

The research solved the historiographic lacuna about Leonardo Ricci’s work in the United States focusing on the span 1952-1972 as a fundamental period for the architect's research, which moved from the project for the community space to macrostructures. The considered period is comprised between Ricci’s first travel to the United States and the date of his resignation from the University of Florida, one year before his resignation from the deanship of the faculty of architecture of Florence (1973). The research retraced philologically the stages of Ricci’s activity in the U.S.A. unveiling the premises and results of his American transfer, and to what extent it marked a turning period for his work as educator and designer and for the wider historiographic contest of the Sixties. The American transfer helped him grounding his belief in avoiding a priori morphological results in favor of what he called the “form-act” design method. Ricci’s research in the U.S.A. is described in his books Anonymous (XX century) and City of the Earth (unpublished). In them and in Ricci’s projects one common thread is traceable: the application of the “form-act” as the best tool to conceive urban design, a discipline established in the United States during Ricci’s first stay at M.I.T., in which he encountered the balance point between architecture and urban planning, between the architect’s sign and his being anonymous, between the collective and the individual dimension. With the notions of “anonymous architecture” and “form-act”, Urban Design and “open work” are the key words to understand Ricci’s work in the United States and in Italy. Urban design’s main goal to design the city as a collective work of art was the solution of that dychothomous research that enlivened Ricci’s work and one possible answer to that tension useful for him to seek the truth of architecture.

ABSTRACT: The relation between the religious involvement with the personality traits in individuals from rural and urban environment were investigated in this work . This study aims to establish associations between personality traits and religion, by carrying out a comparative study of a sample consisting of individuals from rural areas and a sample of individuals from urban areas. The rural sample was collected in the district of Portalegre, in which participated 200 individuals randomly chosen, a sample of 200 individuals in the urban area, specifically in the area of Lisbon city, chosen at random, were also collected. The ages of participants are between 18 and 103 years old (M= 44.20, SD=19.637). A social-demographic characterization of the sample was carried out and four measures were used – Durel (Koenig et al., 1997), BFI (Oliver & John, 2001), the PANAS (Watson Clark & Tellegen, 1988) and PDS (Paulhus, 1998). Results showed significant associations between dimensions of personality and dimensions of religiosity. It was found that individuals with a high religiosity have more pronouneed trits of kindness and conscientiousness. Moreover it was found that individuals with high religiosity in urban areas have a higher level of neuroticism and openness to experience than in rural areas.

Purpose – For many academics in UK universities the nature and orientation of their research is overwhelmingly determined by considerations of how that work will be graded in research assessment exercises (RAEs). The grades awarded to work in a particular subject area can have a considerable impact on the individual and their university. There is a need to better understand those factors which may influence these grades. The paper seeks to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach – The paper considers relationships between the grades awarded and the quantitative information provided to the assessment panels for the 1996 and 2001 RAEs for two subject areas, built environment and town and country planning, and for three other subject areas, civil engineering, geography and archaeology, in the 2001 RAE. Findings – A simple model demonstrating strong and consistent relationships is established. RAE performance relates to numbers of research active staff, the production of books and journal papers, numbers of research studentships and graduations, and research income. Important differences between subject areas are identified. Research limitations/implications – Important issues are raised about the extent to which the new assessment methodology to be adopted for the 2008 RAE will capture the essence of good quality research in architecture and built environment. Originality/value – The findings provide a developmental perspective of RAEs and show how, despite a changed methodology, various research activities might be valued in the 2008 RAE. The basis for a methodology for reviewing the credibility of the judgements of panels is proposed.

Aedes is synanthropic; associated with climatic conditions and urban environment. This study performed a retrospective evaluation of the climatic indices and the A. aeypti and A. albopictus infestation larvae rates (IP), registered from the month of October, 2005 to 2009, in the Araçatuba city, São Paulo State. There was no variation in the average temperature in the period (26.3°C). The rain falls were high in 2005 (133.5 mm3 ) fell in 2006, 2007 and 2008 (55.0 mm3 , 78.5 mm3 and 79.0 mm3 , respectively) and increased in 2009 (104.0 mm3 ). The infestation IP was 1.10, 1.39, 0.36, 0.28 and 3.30, respectively in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, none of them were A. albopictus larvae. There was no association between IP and temperature, but there was significant difference (P <0.001) between the IP of 2009, with the IP of 2007 and 2008. This study it was concluded that among the environmental factors just rain influenced the rate of larvae, "infestation", committed only by A. aegypti.

SummaryThe present thesis deals with the choosing of habitats and species structures of invertebrate populations in urban areas. The main emphasis is focused on the group of saltatoria. Samplings by stationary traps and also by net-catching were carried out from 1993 to 1997. The survey extended over the whole city area of Mainz, Germany, as well as several spots in the area of Frankfurt upon Main. Shifting calcerous sands received special consideration. For a better distinction of the surveying area, three different zones were established, 'Relicts of natural landscape', 'Traditional worked rural landscape' and 'Urban environment'. Partly significant differences in species and individual abundance between the zones showed the influence of the different cultivation on the fauna. To investigate population size and -structure as well as migration and habitat preference - especially in urban areas - capture-recapture experiments were performed on the two species Oedipoda caerulescens L. and Sphingonotus caerulans L. in 1998. Large secondary habitats, such as train stations, are getting more and more important for the survival of the highly endangered S. caerulans. Another centre of attention was the structure of invertebrate populations on class level. The results of the investigation show, that the importance of urban environment for the conservation of species and also nature has been highly underestimated so far.

The encounter of architecture and urbanism with parcelisation is marked with the sign of a historical debt. Parcelisation is a tremendously powerful design tool. Architecture and urban planning attest to its capacity to shape sociospatial relations across a range of scales and contexts. From Renaissance palazzi to modernist slabs, from nation-wide agrarian reforms and Haussmann’s Paris to Christopher Alexander’s new theory of urban design and Michael Webb’s Suitaloon — most of the historical revolutions and experimental projects that have shaken these fields have relied, consciously or not, on a critique and restructuration of inherited divisions of land and space. The layout of parcel patterns has a series of implications including forms of property, the divide between private and public realms, the distribution of spatial contents and uses through zoning, typological decisions and so forth. The behaviour of any urban structure depends on the tissue of plots that configures the urban fabric and many of the challenges urban design faces today —complexity, urban vitality, social equality, etc.— hinge upon the forms of land division and distribution we adopt.

The paper shows the design process of Nagele, a Dutch modernist agrarian settlement designed during the Post-Second World War period by the internationally recognized group of architects De 8 en Opbouw: Rietveld, Van Eesteren, Merkelbach, van Eyck, Bakema, Stam, Ruys, etc. It is located in the Noordoostpolder (NOP), in the Flevoland province, which was entirely reclaimed from the sea. The country planning of the Noodoostpolder reveals a high rationalization in the disposal of roads, canals, cities, agrarian land and forests, which can be an inspiration for the cities of today. The configurational elements of Nagele must be understood in terms of their relationship to the overall system of the polder. Important territorial principles in structure, form and landscape can be seen in the project of Nagele. This relationship is an additional example of the continuing transformation that the entire length and breadth of The Netherlands in subjected to. The research developed to date reveals a plan which shows the evolution of functionalistic paradigm at the CIAM postwar congresses. The particular case of Nagele points to the incorporation of human scale, green design and social co-existence. The source of these theories mainly came from Aldo van Eyck, who played an important role during the second phase of design. The research will be developed analyzing his drawings and texts and will show the way his theories appear in the project. Can Nagele be a materialization of Van Eyck¿s ideas? Nagele constitutes one of the most outstanding contributions to modern urban planning as far as both urbanism and landscape, are at the service of human well-being. Not only were urban independently designed parts, but their relationships also formed a perfect urban whole.

ABSTRACT This research examines the ability of urban planning to accommodate emerging urban management systems. The purpose of this thesis is to describe such informal procedures, by carrying out an exhaustive review across the different approaches to urban management, in order to systematize them as the basis for new ways of urban management. The aim is not, that is, to classify relevant urban interventions, but to recognize the intrinsic structure, an order for disorder, a taxonomy in those proceedings that could help reformulating existing forms of public management. The attempt has been to draw a map of possible opportunities around the management of urban space. Through the processes that have been the object of study, this research analyzes the successes and failures over the last five years of alternative management of vacant spaces, seeking to extract formulas that are likely to join the current way of making city. The focus of this urban study is the interpretation of public concepts, considered as key dimensions, not obliterating the other forms of urban space, but trying to make an in-depth analysis of this fragment within the global urban concept. Other activities intrinsically associated to public space generation, such as art, philosophy, anthropology or even sociology, are also contributing to this research. This interdisciplinary approach tries to enrich the research by recognizing the informal elements participating in emergent public management processes. The ex profeso devised methodology is structured by three main strategies: governance, complexity and Social Cohesiveness. Governance considers elements associated to informality, transversal dynamics, appropriation, participation, transparency and networking. Complexity encompasses elements of urban diversity, sustainable usage of public space, reactivation, urban space production, urban ecology and creative processes. Social Cohesiveness includes elements for equipment innovation, bottom-up processes, rhizome, identity, liquid systems and empowerment. This analyzing machine is tested on three urban scenarios: the urban scene, container buildings and empty spaces. Five relevant urban situations in Madrid have been selected, all of them developed in last five years, thus establishing the basis for other experiences of informal urban management. The result of the research, confirms the relevance of additional dimensions to traditional approaches for urban development. The urban space is recognized as a situational container of public sense and a potential multiplier of functional effects such as public management, temporality, participation, rehabilitation, multiplicity of uses, correction of compactness; perceptual and esthetic effects on the urban scene; politic effects, training, empowerment; social effects as generating new networks and identity creation. To sum up, the purpose of this thesis is to share the conclusions obtained by evaluating reference scenarios that could be applied in similar processes for cities and urban environment management and planning.
