L'ouvrage Reasons and Persons de Derek Parfit a souvent été interprété par la critique comme une résurrection de la conception humienne de l'identité personnelle, qui pensait la personne comme un simple agrégat de perceptions. De féroces débats se sont concentrés autour de cette inteprétation de Reasons and Persons dans la mesure où elle tend vers un fictionnalisme à propos de l'existence des personnes que des commentateurs comme Sydney Shoemaker et Quassim Cassam pensent carrément intenable. Malmené par la critique, Parfit développera plus tard une version plus subtile de sa théorie, en avançant la possible existence d'un schème conceptuel entièrement impersonnel qui posséderait un pouvoir explicatif et descriptif identique au nôtre. Nous examinerons comment il faut comprendre un tel schème conceptuel et présenterons quelques découvertes empiriques remettant en question la réelle équivalence d'un schème conceptuel impersonnel au nôtre.

Criminal justice system in pondicherry - a comparative critical study of the past and the presen

The Union Territory of Pondicherry prior to its merger with the Indian Union was a French Colony. The erstwhile territory of Pondicherry along with its hamlets, namely, KARAIKKAL, MAHE and YANAM was administered by the French Regime. Before it was established by French in 1 6 74 A.D. it was part of Vijayanagara Empire. Prior to this, Pondicherry was a part of the Kingdom of Chola and Pallava Kings. During French Regime, the laws which were in force in France in relation to administration of civil and criminal justice were extended to the erstwhile Territory of Pondicherry. Thus while Pondicherry stood influenced by the Inquisitorial system since the beginning of the 18th century, the neighboring states forming part of the Indian Union since Independence came under the Influence of the British system, viz. accusatorial system. The territory of Pondicherry, for administrative reasons, came to be merged with the Indian Union in the early 60's. Following the merger, the Indian administration sought to extent its own laws from time to time replacing erstwhile French Laws, however, subject to certain savings. Thus the transitional period witnessed consequential changes in the administration of the territory, including the sphere of judicial system. Since I 963, the Union Territory of Pondicherry was brought under the spell of the Indian Legal System The people in Pondicherry ' thus have had the benefit of experiencing both the svstems. Their experiences will be of much help to those who undertake comparative studies in law. The plus and minus points of the respective systems help one to develop a detachment that helps independent evaluation of the svstents. The result of these studies could be relevant in revitalising our criminal systems.The present system is evaluated in the light of the past system. New dimensions are added by way' of an empirical study also.

She was delivering the inaugural address at the International Conference on Semigroups, Algebras and Applications (ICSA 2015) organized by Dept. of Mathematics, Cochin university of Science and Technology on Thursday. Mathematics plays an important role in the development of basic science. The academic community should not delay in accepting and appreciating this, Dr. Letha added. Pesca i associacionisme al litoral de Girona : la confraria de Sant Pere de Palamós (segles XVII-XVIII)

L’objectiu ha estat utilitzar el cas concret del Palamós modern per introduir-nos en l’estudi de l’associacionisme marítimo-pesquer anterior a les convulsions polítiques i administratives provocades per les reformes introduïdes per la monarquia il·lustrada a partir de la segona meitat del segle XVIII. La Matrícula de Mar – nom amb que es coneix el sistema de lleves ideat per la Monarquia a partir de 1751 per dotar d’efectius humans els vaixells de l’Armada – va capgirar radicalment la situació del sector pesquer, a banda d’importat i instaurar, pels que l’han estudiat, un model associatiu extern al model confraternal devocional català que aquí presentem. La intenció és veure quina era la situació precedent, en què es caracteritzava i com encaixava l’associacionisme pesquer català en el panorama confraternal medieval i modern: solucionar, en resum, aquest decalatge primigeni. Abans, però, caldria parlar breument de les bases materials, socials i culturals del sector, i molt en concret del paper, rellevant al nostre entendre, de la religió i de les institucions eclesiàstiques en tot aquest procés

Entre el 14 i el 18 de març de 1998 es va celebrar a Barcelona la conferència Earth’s Changing Land sota la tutela dels programes internacionals Global Change in Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) i Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC). L’objectiu principal de la trobada era presentar les darreres aportacions científiques sobre els efectes presents i previsibles del canvi global sobre els ecosistemes terrestres i la societat. Al mateix temps, es volia afavorir l’establiment de ponts de diàleg entre els professionals implicats en el canvi global

Object and Scene Classification: what does a Supervised Approach Provide us?

Given a set of images of scenes containing different object categories (e.g. grass, roads) our objective is to discover these objects in each image, and to use this object occurrences to perform a scene classification (e.g. beach scene, mountain scene). We achieve this by using a supervised learning algorithm able to learn with few images to facilitate the user task. We use a probabilistic model to recognise the objects and further we classify the scene based on their object occurrences. Experimental results are shown and evaluated to prove the validity of our proposal. Object recognition performance is compared to the approaches of He et al. (2004) and Marti et al. (2001) using their own datasets. Furthermore an unsupervised method is implemented in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of our supervised classification approach versus an unsupervised one

A new approach to the classification of mammographic masses and normal breast tissue

A new approach to mammographic mass detection is presented in this paper. Although different algorithms have been proposed for such a task, most of them are application dependent. In contrast, our approach makes use of a kindred topic in computer vision adapted to our particular problem. In this sense, we translate the eigenfaces approach for face detection/classification problems to a mass detection. Two different databases were used to show the robustness of the approach. The first one consisted on a set of 160 regions of interest (RoIs) extracted from the MIAS database, being 40 of them with confirmed masses and the rest normal tissue. The second set of RoIs was extracted from the DDSM database, and contained 196 RoIs containing masses and 392 with normal, but suspicious regions. Initial results demonstrate the feasibility of using such approach with performances comparable to other algorithms, with the advantage of being a more general, simple and cost-effective approach

La presente monografía hace un análisis del movimiento estudiantil denominado Revolución de los Pingüinos y su incidencia en la reforma educativa en Chile. Éste trabajo pretende mostrar cómo a partir de la teoría de la acción política No violenta de Gene Sharp y la Estructura de Oportunidades Políticas de Sydney Tarrow, dicho movimiento logra generar un ambiente favorable para la inclusión de una educación de calidad en la agenda de Gobierno de Michelle Bachelet.

The value of using short-format podcasts to enhance learning and teaching

This paper presents the findings of a podcasting trial held in 2007-2008 within the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney, Australia. The trial investigates the value of using short-format podcasts to support assessment for postgraduate and undergraduate students. A multi-method approach is taken in investigating perceptions of the benefits of podcasting, incorporating surveys, focus groups and interviews. The results show that a majority of students believe they gained learning benefits from the podcasts and appreciated the flexibility of the medium to support their learning, and the lecturers felt the innovation helped diversify their pedagogical approach and support a diverse student population. Three primary conclusions are presented: (1) most students reject the mobile potential of podcasting in favour of their traditional study space at home; (2) what students and lecturers value about this podcasting design overlap; (3) the assessment-focussed, short-format podcast design may be considered a successful podcasting model. The paper finishes by identifying areas for future research on the effective use of podcasting in learning and teaching.

Análisis del contexto de oportunidades y restricciones políticas bajo el cual se ha llevado a cabo la movilización del pueblo Mapuche en Chile (2000-2010)

Monografía de grado por medio de la cual a partir de la teoría de Estructura de Oportunidades y de restricciones Políticas de Sydney Tarrow, se analiza el contexto en el que la movilización mapuche emergió durante los dos últimos gobiernos del partido socialista chileno. Para ello en un primer momento se hizo un análisis histórico de la problemática indígena hasta el restablecimiento de la democracia en 1989. Paso seguido fueron analizadas las respuestas que dieron los gobiernos de Ricardo Lagos y Michelle Bachelet a la problemática indígena y mapuche, teniendo como marco la reivindicación de derechos que les fueron planteadas a dichos gobiernos.
