Reaction of 1-(2'-pyridylazo)-2 -naphthol (Hpan) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] (dmso=dimethylsulfoxide), [Ru(trpy)Cl-3] (trpy=2,2',2 ''-terpyridine), [Ru(bpy)Cl-3] (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) and [Ru(PPh3)(3)Cl-2] in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords, respectively, the [Ru(pan)(2)], [Ru(trpy)(pan)](+) (isolated as perchlorate salt), [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(pan)Cl] complexes. Structures of these four complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. in each of these complexes, the pan ligand is coordinated to the metal center as a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-donor. Reaction of the [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] complex with pyridine (py) and 4-picoline (pic) in the presence of silver ion has yielded the [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)](+) and [Ru(bpy)(pan)(pic)](+) complexes (isolated as perchlorate salts), respectively. All the complexes are diamagnetic (low-spin d(6), S = 0) and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on all the complexes shows a Ru(II)-Ru(III) oxidation on the positive side of SCE. Except in the [Ru(pan)(2)] complex, a second oxidative response has been observed in the other five complexes. Reductions of the coordinated ligands have also been observed on the negative side of SCE. The [Ru(trpy)(pan)]ClO4, [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)]ClO4 and [Ru(bpy) (pan)(pic)]ClO4 complexes have been observed to bind to DNA, but they have not been able to cleave super-coiled DNA on UV irradiation. Reaction of Cu(1,2-phenylenediamine)(2)(ClO4)(2) with neat RR'=O (R = methyl and/or ethyl) (lives Cu(2,2-dialkyl-2H-benzimidazole)ClO4. demetallation of which by the action of aqueous ammonia yields Pure 2,2-dialkyl-2H-benzimidazoles. These are characterised by NMR. hi the X-ray crystal Structure, Ag(2,2-methyl-2H-benzimi-dazolc)NO3 is Found to be a spiral 1D coordination polymer where the 2H-benzimidazole acts as an N,N bridge between two Ag(I) centus. Although 2H-benzimidazoles are very unstable in the free state, they are quite stable in their Cu(I)(1) and Ag(I) complexes. The 1,2-tautomerisation in imidazole and benzimidazole have been Studied by means of transition state calculations at B3LYP/6-3 11 +G(2d,p)* level.

The syntheses and spectroscopic characterization of two 1,2,4-triazole-based oxovanadium(V) complexes are reported: 1(-)[VO(2)L1](-) and 2 [(VOL2)(2)(OMe)(2)] (where H(2)L1 = 3-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(pyridin-2"-yl)-H-1-1,2,4-triazole, H3L2 = bis-3,5-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole). The ligand environment (N,N,O vs O,N,O) is found to have a profound influence on the properties and reactivity of the complexes formed. The presence of the triazolato ligand allows for pH tuning of the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, as well as the interaction and stability of the complexes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The vanadium(IV) oxidation states were generated electrochemically and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies, For 2, under acidic conditions, rapid exchange of the methoxide ligands with solvent [in particular, in the vanadium(IV) redox state] was observed.

An aqueous solution of the α-ω-dicarboxylic acid octanedioic acid (odaH2) reacts with [Cu2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2] in the presence of an excess of pyridine (py) to give the crystalline copper(II) complex {Cu2(η1η1μ2-oda)2(py)4(H2O)2}n (1). structure of 1, as determined by X-ray crystallography, consists of polymeric chains in which bridging oda2− anions link two crystallographically identical copper atoms. The copper atoms are also ligated by two transoidal pyridine nitrogens and an oxygen atom from an apical water molecule, giving the metals an overall N2O3 square-pyramidal geometry. If the blue solid 1 is gently heated, or if it is left to stand in its mother liquor for prolonged periods, it loses one molecule of pyridine and half a molecule of water and the green complex {Cu (oda)(py)(H2O)0.5}n (2) is formed. Spectroscopic and magnetic data for both complexes are given, together with the electrochemical and thermogravimetric measurements for 1.

Copper(II) acetate reacts with benzene-1,2-dioxyacetic acid (bdoaH2) in aqueous media to give [Cu(bdoa)(H2O)2] (1). Complex 1 reacts with the N-donor ligands pyridine (py), ammonia and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) to give [Cu(bdoa)(NH3)2]·H2O (2), [Cu(bdoa)(py)2]·H2O (3) and [Cu2(bdoa)(phen)4]bdoa·13H2O (4), respectively. The X-ray crystal structure of the dicopper(II,II) complex 4 shows each copper atom at the centre of a distorted trigonal bipyramid comprising four nitrogen atoms from two chelating phen ligands and a single oxygen atom from one of the carboxylate moieties of the bridging bdoa2− ligand. The cyclic voltammogram of 4 shows a single reversible wave for the Cu2+/Cu+ couple at E = + 115 mV (vs Ag/AgCl). Spectroscopic and magnetic data for the complexes are given.

W(CO)6 reacts with a mixture of acetic acid/acetic anhydride to give [W3 (μ3-O)2(μ2η2-O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](CH3CO2)2 (1), which was converted by HClO4 to [W3 (μ3-O)2(μ2η2-O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](ClO4)2 (2). Addition of CH3CO2Na to the above reaction mixture, and prolonged exposure of the solution to air, results in the formation of the WIV/WVI complex salt [W3(μ3-O)2(μ2η2-O2CCH3)6(H2O)3]2[W10O32]·solvent (3). Complex 3 was also prepared by reacting 1 with Na2WO4·2H2O in acetic acid, and it has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Addition of [CH3(CH2)3]4N(ClO4) to the reaction filtrate remaining after the preparation of [Mo2(μ-O2CCH3)4][from Mo(CO)6, CH3CO2H and (CH3CO)2O], followed by exposure to air, gives ([CH3(CH2)3]4N)2[Mo6O19] (4).

Protein sequences from characterized type III secretion (TTS) systems were used as probes in silico to identify several TTS gene homologs in the genome sequence of Brucella suis biovar 1 strain 1330. Four of the genes, named flhB, fliP, fliR, and fliF on the basis of greatest homologies to known flagellar apparatus proteins, were targeted in PCR and hybridization assays to determine their distribution among other Brucella nomen species and biovars. The results indicated that flhB, fliP, fliR and fliF are present in Brucella melitensis, Brucella ovis, and Brucella suis biovars 1, 2 and 3. Similar homologos have been reported previously in Brucella abortus. Using RT-PCR assays, we were unable to detect any expression of these genes. It is not yet known whether the genes are the cryptic remnants of a flagellar system or are actively involved in a process contributing to pathogenicity or previously undetected motility, but they are distributed widely in Brucella and merit further study to determine their role.

Three new zinc(II)-hexamethylenetetramine (hmt) complexes [Zn-2(4-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(OH2)(hmt)] (1). [Zn-2(2-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(2)](n) (2) and [Zn-3(3-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(mu(2)-OH)(mu(3)-OH)](n) (3) with three isomeric nitrobenzoate, [4-nbz = 4-nitrobenzoate, 2-nbz = 2-nitrobenzoate and 3-nbz = 3-nitrobenzoate] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their identities have also been established by elemental analysis: IR, NMR, UV-Vis and mass spectral studies. 1 is a dinuclear complex formed by bridging hmt with mu(2) coordinating mode. The geometry around the Zn centers in 1 is distorted tetrahedral. Paddle-wheel centrosymmetric Zn-2(2-nbz)(4) units of complex 2 are interconnected by mu(2)-hmt forming a one-dimensional chain with square-pyramidal geometries around the Zn centers. Compound 3 contains a mu(2)/mu(3)-hydroxido and mu(2)-hmt bridged 1D chain. In this complex, varied geometries around the Zn centers are observed viz, tetrahedral, square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. Various weak forces, i.e. lone pair-pi, pi-pi and CH-pi interactions, play a key role in stabilizing the observed structures for complexes 1,2 and 3. This series of complexes demonstrates that although the nitro group does not coordinate to the metal center, its presence at the 2-, 3- or 4-position of the phenyl ring has a striking effect on the dimensionality as well as the structure of the resulted coordination polymers, probably due to the participation of the nitro group in 1.p.center dot center dot center dot pi and/or C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

The dissymmetrical naphthalene-bridged complexes [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*] (3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5, Cp′ = η5-C5H2-1,2,4-tBu3) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (4) were synthesized via a one-pot procedure from FeCl2(thf)1.5, Cp′K, KC10H8, and [Cp* FeCl(tmeda)] (tmeda = N,N,N′,N′- tetramethylethylenediamine) or [Cp*RuCl]4, respectively. The symmetrically substituted iron ruthenium complex [Cp*Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (5) bearing two Cp* ligands was prepared as a reference compound. Compounds 3−5 are diamagnetic and display similar molecular structures, where the metal atoms are coordinated to opposite sides of the bridging naphthalene molecule. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry studies revealed that neutral 3−5 can be oxidized to monocations 3+−5+ and dications 32+−52+. The chemical oxidation of 3 and 4 with [Cp2Fe]PF6 afforded the paramagnetic hexafluorophosphate salts [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*]PF6 ([3]PF6) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*]PF6 ([4]PF6), which were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including EPR and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [4]PF6 was determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations support the structural and spectroscopic data and determine the compositions of frontier molecular orbitals in the investigated complexes. The effects of substituting Cp* with Cp′ and Fe with Ru on the electronic structures and the structural and spectroscopic properties are analyzed.

This paper describes the structural evolution of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) nanopowders using two soft chemistry routes, the sol-gel and the polymeric precursor methods. Differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy techniques have been used to study the chemical reactions between 700 and 1200 degrees C temperature range. From both methods the Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) (Er:YAB) solid solution was obtained almost pure when the powdered samples were heat treated at 1150 degrees C. Based on the results, a schematic phase formation diagram of Er:YAB crystalline solid solution was proposed for powders from each method. The Er:YAB solid solution could be optimized by adding a small amount of boron oxide in excess to the Er:YAB nominal composition. The nanoparticles are obtained around 210 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectrum of the Er:YAB nanocrystalline powders was measured on the infrared region and the Stark components of the (4)I(13/2) and (4)I(15/2) levels were determined. Finally, for the first time the Raman spectrum of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) crystalline phase is also presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

alpha-diamines, such as ethylendiamine and o-phenylendiamine, add to 3,4-aryl-disubstituted 1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxides to give dihydropyrazines or quinoxalines, respectively and sulfamide. The new compound acenaphtho [5,6-b]-2,3-dihydropyrazine was synthesized and characterized. The addition of ethylendiamine to 3,4-diphenyl-1,2,5-thiadiazoline 1,1-dioxide gives 3,4-disubstituted thiadiazoildine 1,1-dioxide, dihydropyrazines, or pyrazines, depending on the reaction condition used. The reactions were followed by cyclic voltammetry and NMR spectroscopy which, in some cases, allowed the detection of the thiadiazolidine intermediate. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Photochemical and photophysical properties of fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(trans-L)](+) complexes, Clphen = 5-chloro-1,10-phenathroline and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpe, or 4-styrylpyridine, stpy, were investigated to complement the understanding of intramolecular energy transfer process in tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes having an electron withdrawing group attached to polypyridyl ligands. These new compounds were synthesized, characterized and the photoisomerization quantum yields were accurately determined by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The true quantum yields for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen) (trans-bpe)](+) were constant (Phi = 0.55) at all investigated irradiation wavelengths. However, for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(trans-stpy)](+), similar true quantum yields were observed only at higher energy irradiation (Phi(313 nm) = 0.53 and Phi(365 nm) = 0.57), but it decreased significantly at 404 nm (Phi = 0.41). These results indicated different deactivation pathways for the trans-stpy complex photoisomerization. Quantum yields decreased as the (3)IL(trans-L) and (3)MLCT(Re -> NN) excited states become closer and the behavior was discussed in terms of the excited state energy gaps. Additionally, luminescence properties of photoproducts, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(cis-L)](+), were also investigated in different environments to analyze the relative energy of the (3)MLCT(Re -> Clphen) excited state for each compound. The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide(III) citrates with stoichiometries 1:1 and 2:3; [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O], Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are reported. L stands for (C6O7H5)(3-) and LH for (C6O7H6)(2-). Infrared absorption spectra of both series evidence coordination of carboxylate groups through symmetric bridges or chelation. X-ray powder patterns show the amorphous character of [LnL center dot xH(2)O]. The compounds [Ln(2)LH(3)center dot 2H(2)O] are crystalline and isomorphous. Emission spectra of Eu compounds suggest C-2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron of [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and C-4v for [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O]. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG-DTA) were carried out for both series. The thermal analysis patterns of the two series are quite different and both fit in a 4-step model of thermal decomposition, with lanthanide oxides as final products.

The thermo-solvatochrornic behaviors of 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl) phenolate, RB; 2,6-dichloro-4-(2,4,6-triphenyloyridinium-1-yl) phenolate, WB; 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)ethenyl] phenolate, MePMBr(2); 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-n-octylpyridinium-4-yl)ethenyl] phenolate, OcPMBr(2), have been investigated in binary mixtures of the ionic liquid, IL, 1-(1-butyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluorborate, [BuMeIm][BF(4)], and water (W), in the temperature range from 10 to 60 degrees C. Plots of the empirical solvent polarities, ET (probe) in kcal mol(-1), versus the mole fraction of water in the binary mixture, chi(w) showed nonlinear, i.e., nonideal behavior. Solvation by these IL-W mixtures shows the following similarities to that by aqueous aliphatic alcohols: The same solvation model can be conveniently employed to treat the data obtained; it is based on the presence in the system-bulk medium and probe solvation shell of IL, W, and the ""complex"" solvent 1:1 IL-W. The origin of the nonideal solvation behavior appears to be the same, preferential solvation of the probe, in particular by the complex solvent. The strength of association of the IL-W complex, and the polarity of the IL are situated between the corresponding values of aqueous methanol and aqueous ethanol. Temperature increase causes a gradual desolvation of all probes employed. A difference between solvation by IL-W and aqueous alcohols is that probe-solvent hydrophobic interactions appear to play a minor role in case of the former mixture, probably because solvation is dominated by hydrogen-bonding and Coulombic interactions between the ions of the IL and the zwitterionic probes.

Raman spectra of polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGdME) with LiClO(4), PEGdME/LiClO(4), and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, PEGdME/[bmim]PF(6), are compared. Raman spectroscopy suggests stronger interactions in PEGdME/LiClO(4) than PEGdmE/[bmim]PF(6), thus corroborating previous results obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. Quantum Chemistry methods have been used to calculate vibrational frequencies and the equilibrium structure of segments of the polymer chain around the cation. A consistent picture has been obtained from Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations for these polymer electrolytes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
