Reaction of 2-(2'-carboxyphenylazo)-4-methylphenol (H2L) with [M(PPh3)(2)Cl-2] (M = Pd, Pt) affords mixed-ligand complexes of type [M(PPh3)(L)]. Structures of both the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Both the complexes are square planar, where the 2-(2'-carboxyphenylazo)-4-methylphenol is coordinated to the metal center, via dissociation of the two acidic protons, as a dianionic tridentate O,N,O-donor, and the fourth position is occupied by the triphenylphosphine. These complexes show intense MLCT transitions in the visible region.

Carbamoyl methyl pyrazole compound of palladium(II) chloride of the type [PdCl2L2] (where L = C5H7N2CH2CON(C4H9)(2), C5H7N2CH2CON((C4H9)-C-i)(2), C3H3N2CH2CON(C4H9)(2), or C3H3N2CH2CON((C4H9)-C-i)(2)) has been synthesized and characterized by IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the compound [PdCl2{(C3H3N2CH2CONBu2}2)-Bu-i] has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and shows that the ligands are bonded through the soft pyrazolyl nitrogen atom to the palladium(II) chloride in a trans disposition. Synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of a new cyano-bridged one-dimensional iron (III)-gadolinium (III) compound, trans-[Gd(o-phen)(2)(H2O)(2)(mu-CN)(2)Fe(CN)(4)], - 2no-phen (o-phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been described. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic P (1) over bar space group with the following unit cell parameters: a = 10.538(14) angstrom, b = 12.004(14) angstrom, c = 20.61(2) angstrom, alpha = 92.41(1)degrees, beta = 92.76(1)degrees, gamma = 11 2.72(1)degrees, and Z = 2. In this complex, each gadolinium (III) is coordinated to two nitrile nitrogens of the CN groups coming from two different ferricyanides, the mutually trans cyanides of each of which links another different Gd-III to create -NC-Fe(CN)(4)-CN-Gd-NC- type 1-D chain structure. The one-dimensional chains are self-assembled in two-dimensions via weak C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds. Both the variable-temperature (2-300 K, 0.01 T and 0.8 T) and variable-field (0-50 000 Gauss, 2 K) magnetic measurements reveal the existence of very weak interaction in this molecule. The temperature dependence of the susceptibilities has been analyzed using a model for a chain of alternating classic (7/2) and quantum (1/2) spins. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Temperature dependent susceptibility for 2 was fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression which led to the parameters J = -3.43 cm(-1) and R = 1 X 10(-5). The magnetic data for 3 were fitted to Baker's expression for S = 1/2 and the parameters obtained were J = 1.6 cm(-1) and R = 3.2 x 10(-4). Crystal data are as follows. Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H13ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 8.788(12), b = 13.045(15), c = 14.213(15) Angstrom; beta = 102.960(10)degrees; Z = 4. Cu(L-2)(mu-N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula. C10H17ClN6O4Cu: crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 10.790(12), b = 8.568(9), c = 16.651(17) Angstrom; beta = 102.360(10)degrees; Z = 4. Two mononuclear and one dinuclear copper(II) complexes, containing neutral tetradentate NSSN type ligands, of formulation [Cu-II(L-1)Cl]ClO4 (1), [Cu-II(L-2)Cl]ClO4 (2) and [Cu-2(II)(L-3)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(2) (3) were synthesized and isolated in pure form [where L-1 = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane, L-2 = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane and L-3 = 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)butane]. All these green colored copper(II) complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The dinuclear copper(II) complex 3 changed to a colorless dinuclear copper(I) species of formula [Cu-2(1)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2),0.5H(2)O (4) in dimethylformamide even in the presence of air at ambient temperature, while complexes I and 2 showed no change under similar conditions. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 2 and 4 were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the copper in complexes 1 and 2 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas the coordination environment about the copper(I) in dinuclear complex 4 is distorted tetrahedral. We previously reported sequence determination of neutral oligosaccharides by negative ion electrospray tandem mass spectrometry on a quadrupole-orthogonal time-of-flight instrument with high sensitivity and without the need of derivatization. In the present report, we extend our strategies to sialylated oligosaccharides for analysis of chain and blood group types together with branching patterns. A main feature in the negative ion mass spectrometry approach is the unique double glycosidic cleavage induced by 3-glycosidic substitution, producing characteristic D-type fragments which can be used to distinguish the type 1 and type 2 chains, the blood group related Lewis determinants, 3,6-disubstituted core branching patterns, and to assign the structural details of each of the branches. Twenty mono- and disialylated linear and branched oligosaccharides were used for the investigation, and the sensitivity achieved is in the femtomole range. To demonstrate the efficacy of the strategy, we have determined a novel complex disialylated and monofucosylated tridecasaccharide that is based on the lacto-N-decaose core. The structure and sequence assignment was corroborated by :methylation analysis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy.

Two experiments implement and evaluate a training scheme for learning to apply frequency formats to probability judgements couched in terms of percentages. Results indicate that both conditional and cumulative probability judgements can be improved in this manner, however the scheme is insufficient to promote any deeper understanding of the problem structure. In both experiments, training on one problem type only (either conditional or cumulative risk judgements) resulted in an inappropriate transfer of a learned method at test. The obstacles facing a frequency-based training programme for teaching appropriate use of probability data are discussed. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A poor representation of cloud structure in a general circulation model (GCM) is widely recognised as a potential source of error in the radiation budget. Here, we develop a new way of representing both horizontal and vertical cloud structure in a radiation scheme. This combines the ‘Tripleclouds’ parametrization, which introduces inhomogeneity by using two cloudy regions in each layer as opposed to one, each with different water content values, with ‘exponential-random’ overlap, in which clouds in adjacent layers are not overlapped maximally, but according to a vertical decorrelation scale. This paper, Part I of two, aims to parametrize the two effects such that they can be used in a GCM. To achieve this, we first review a number of studies for a globally applicable value of fractional standard deviation of water content for use in Tripleclouds. We obtain a value of 0.75 ± 0.18 from a variety of different types of observations, with no apparent dependence on cloud type or gridbox size. Then, through a second short review, we create a parametrization of decorrelation scale for use in exponential-random overlap, which varies the scale linearly with latitude from 2.9 km at the Equator to 0.4 km at the poles. When applied to radar data, both components are found to have radiative impacts capable of offsetting biases caused by cloud misrepresentation. Part II of this paper implements Tripleclouds and exponential-random overlap into a radiation code and examines both their individual and combined impacts on the global radiation budget using re-analysis data.

Extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) is produced by diverse bacterial pathogens and fulfills assorted roles, including providing a structural matrix for biofilm formation and more specific functions in virulence, such as protection against immune defenses. We report here the first investigation of some of the genes important for biofilm formation in Photorhabdus luminescens and demonstrate the key role of the phosphomannose isomerase gene, manA, in the structure of functional EPS. Phenotypic analyses of a manA-deficient mutant showed the importance of EPS in motility, insect virulence, and biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces as well as the requirement of this gene for the use of mannose as the sole carbon source. Conversely, this defect had no apparent impact on symbiosis with the heterorhabditid nematode vector. A more detailed analysis of biofilm formation revealed that the manA mutant was able to attach to surfaces with the same efficiency as that of the wild-type strain but could not develop the more extended biofilm matrix structures. A compositional analysis of P. luminescens EPS reveals how the manA mutation has a major effect on the formation of a complete, branched EPS.

Much prior research on the structure and performance of UK real estate portfolios has relied on aggregated measures for sector and region. For these groupings to have validity, the performance of individual properties within each group should be similar. This paper analyses a sample of 1,200 properties using multiple discriminant analysis and cluster analysis techniques. It is shown that conventional property type and spatial classifications do not capture the variation in return behaviour at the individual building level. The major feature is heterogeneity - but there may be distinctions between growth and income properties and between single and multi-let properties that could help refine portfolio structures.

d(ACGTACGT), C78H84N30O32P7.20H2O, Mr (DNA) = 2170, tetragonal, P43212 (No 96), a = 42.845 (1), b = 42.845(1), c = 24.804 (1) Å, V = 45532.5 (2) Å3, z = 8,(MoK) = 0.71069 Å,µ(MoK) = 0.10 mm-1, T = 295 K, R = 0.18 for 1994 unique reflections between 5.0 and 1.9 Å resolution. The self-complementary octanucleotide d(ACGTACGT)2 has been crystallized and its structure determined to a resolution of 1.9 Å. The asymmetric unit consists of a single strand of octamer with 20 water molecules. It is only the second example of an octanucleotide having terminal A·T base pairs whose structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The sequence adopts the modified A-type conformation found for all octanucleotide duplexes studied to date with the helix bent by approximately 15° and an average tilt angle of 0°. Unusually the data collection was carried out using a 3 kW molybdenum sealed-tube source. The conformational details are discussed in comparison with other closely related sequences.

A 1H NMR study of monosubstituted η-cyclopentadienyl-rhodium(I) complexes of type LLRh(C5H4X) and -iridium(I) complexes of type L2Ir(C5H4X) (L = ethene, LL = 1,3- or 1,5-diolefin; X = C(C6H5)3, CHO, or COOCH3) has been carried out. For complexes of both metals in which the neutral ligand is ethene or a non-conjugated diolefin the NMR spectra of the cyclopentadienyl protons are unusual in that H(2), H(5) resonate to high field either at room temperature or below. The corresponding NMR spectra for the cyclopentadienyl ring protons of complexes where the neutral ligand is a conjugated diene are, with one exception, normal. A single crystal X-ray structural analysis of (η4-2,4-dimethylpenta-1,4-diene)(η5-formylcyclopentadienyl)rhodium(I) (which exhibits an abnormal 1H NMR spectrum) reveals substantial localisation of electron density in the C(3)C(4) Cp ring bond (1.283(33) Å) which may be consistent with a contribution from an ‘allyl-ene’ rotamer to the ring—metal bonding scheme. An extended Hückel calculation with self consistent charge iteration was performed on this complex. The results predict a greater Mulliken overlap population for the C(3)C(4) bond in the cyclopentadienyl ring and show that the localisation is dependent on both the Cp ring substituent and the nature of the diolefin. The mass spectral fragmentation patterns of some representative diene complexes of iridium(I) and rhodium(I) are presented.

Curd rheology and calcium distribution in buffalo and cows’ milk, were compared at their natural pH and during acidification (pH 6.5–5.6). Buffalo milk displays a curd structure and rheology different from that of cows’ milk and the casein-bound calcium, as well as the contents of fat, protein and calcium, are also higher. Due to these higher amounts of casein-bound calcium, the overall curd strength with buffalo milk (as indicated by the dynamic moduli) was higher, at similar pH values, than those of equivalent gels produced from cows’ milk. The curd rheology was adversely affected at lower pH (5.8–5.6) in both of the milk types, due to the loss of casein-bound calcium from casein micelles. The degree of solubilisation of calcium in buffalo milk during acidification is quite different from that observed in cows’ milk with a lower proportion of the calcium being solubilised in the former. The maximum curd firmness was obtained at pH 6.0 in both milk types. For both species, these rheological and micellar changes were qualitatively the same but quantitatively different, due to the different milk compositions.

The inherent possibility of structural anisotropy in polypyrrole and other heterocyclic systems is introduced. By selecting the appropriate electrochemical variables including monomer and dopant type this intrinsic molecular anisotropy may be used to prepare films with well defined global anisotropy, in which the planes of the pyrrole rings prefer to lie parallel to the electrode surface. The conditions for obtaining such materials are discussed and some of the effects of these novel anisotropic structures on the resultant properties are highlighted. Attention is directed at charge transport and optical properties.
