The absorption spectrum in the visible range and the, ESR spectrum of vanadyl sulfate were lost on addition of diperoxovanadate. The V-51-NMR spectra revealed that diperoxovanadate was reduced to vanadate and its oligomers. With excess vanadyl, tetrameric vanadate was found to be the major product, During this reaction oxygen was released into the medium. The oxygen-release reaction was inhibited by a variety of organic ligands-imidazole, benzoate, formate, mannitol, ethanol, Tris, DMPO, malate, and asparagine. An oxygen-consuming reaction emerged at high concentrations of some of these compounds, e.g. benzoate and ethanol. Using DMPO as the spin-trap, an oxygen-radical species with a 1:2:2:1 type of ESR spectrum was detected in the reaction mixtures resulting from vanadyl oxidation by diperoxovanadate which was unaffected by addition of catalase or ethanol. The results showed that secondary oxygen-exchange reactions occur which depend on and utilize the intermediates in the primary reaction during diperoxovanadate-dependent oxidation of vanadyl sulfate.

Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reactions in the zinc porphyrin-crown ether (ZnPCE) supramolecule, in which one crown ether moiety containing Eu3+ as electron acceptor is covalently linked to zinc porphyrin (ZnP), were studied by flash photolysis. In methanol solutions, highly efficient charge separation occurs via intramolecular ET from (ZnP)-Zn-3 to Eu3+ encapsulated in the crown ether void (k(1) = (3 +/- 1) X 10(3) s(-1)) and intramolecular ET from 3ZnP to uncomplexed Eu2+ (k(2) = (2.5 +/- 0.5) X 10(3) s(-1)). Intermolecular ET from Eu2+ escaped from the crown ether void to ZnP.+ (k(tau) = (4.3 +/- 0.7) X 10(8) M(-1) s(-1)) seems to be the main pathway of charge recombination.

It is shown that, although the mathematical analysis of the Alfven-wave equation does not show any variation at non-zero or zero singular points, the role of surface waves in the physical mechanism of resonant absorption of Alfven waves is very different at these points. This difference becomes even greater when resistivity is taken into account. At the neutral point the zero-frequency surface waves that are symmetric surface modes of the structured neutral layer couple to the tearing mode instability of the layer. The importance of this study for the energy balance in tearing modes and the association of surface waves with driven magnetic reconnection is also pointed out.

Sparingly soluble neodymium copper oxalate (NCO) single crystals were grown by gel method, by the diffusion of a mixture of neodymium nitrate and cupric nitrate into the set gel containing oxalic acid. Tabular crystal, revealing well-defined dissolution figures has been recorded. X-ray diffraction studies of the powdered sample reveal that NCO is crystalline. Infrared absorption spectrum confirmed the formation of oxalato complex with water of crystallization, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis established the presence of neodymium dominant over copper in the sample. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies established the presence of Nd and Cu in oxide states besides (C2O4)(2-) oxalate group. The intensities of Nd (3d(5/2)) and Cu (2p(3/2)) peaks measured in terms of maximum photoelectron count rates also revealed the presence of Nd in predominance. The inductively coupled plasma analysis supports the EDAX and XPS data by the estimation of neodymium percentage by weight to that of copper present in the NCO sample. On the basis of these findings, an empirical structure for NCO has been proposed. The implications are discussed.

We present an unusual temperature dependence of hysteresis in the Lion resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) signals from superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta. We observe that the hysteresis increases with increase in temperature till T-c which we interpret as evidence for the presence of Bean-Livingston surface barriers (BLSB) in the single crystalline films.

Two fragments of pancreatic ribonuclease A, a truncated version of S-peptide (residues 1-15) and S-protein (residues 21-124), combine to give a catalytically active complex. We have substituted the wild-type residue at position 13, methionine (Met), with norleucine (Nle), where the only covalent change is the replacement of the sulfur atom with a methylene group. The thermodynamic parameters associated with the binding of this variant to S-protein, determined by titration calorimetry in the temperature range 10-40 degrees C, are reported and compared to values previously reported [Varadarajan, R., Connelly, P. R., Sturtevant, J. M., & Richards, F. M. (1992) Biochemistry 31, 1421-1426] for other position 13 analogs. The differences in the free energy and enthalpy of binding between the Met and Nle peptides are 0.6 and 7.9 kcal/mol at 25 degrees C, respectively. These differences are slightly larger than, but comparable to, the differences in the values for the Met/Ile and Met/Leu pairs. The structure of the mutant complex was determined to 1.85 Angstrom resolution and refined to an R-factor of 17.4% The structures of mutant and wild-type complexes are practically identical although the Nle side chain has a significantly higher average B-factor than the corresponding Met side chain. In contrast, the B-factors of the atoms of the cage of residues surrounding position 13 are all somewhat lower in the Nle variant than in the Met wild-type. Thus, the large differences in the binding enthalpy appear to reside entirely in the difference in chemical properties or dynamic behavior of the -S- and -CH2- groups and not in differences in the geometry of the side chains or the internal cavity surface. In addition, a novel method of obtaining protein stability data by means of isothermal titration calorimetry is introduced.

Time-resolved fluorescence studies were carried out on a series of free-base and zinc(II) derivatives of meso-tetraphenylporphyrins covalently linked to either 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) or 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) acceptor units. These acceptor units were linked at different sites (at the ortho, meta or para positions of one of the phenyl groups of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin) to the donor porphyrins such that the resulting isomeric intramolecular donor-acceptor complexes exhibit different centre-to-centre (ctc) distances and relative orientations. Biexponential fluorescence decay profiles observed for several of these covalently linked complexes were rationalized in terms of the presence of ''closed'' and ''extended'' conformers. Detailed analyses of the fluorescence decay data have provided a comprehensive understanding of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions occurring in systems containing zinc(II) porphyrin donors. It is observed that although DNB-linked zinc(II) complexes follow the trends predicted for the efficiency of PET with respect to donor-acceptor distance, the TNB-linked zinc(II) porphyrins exhibit a behaviour which is dictated by steric effects. Similarly, although the thermodynamic criteria predict a greater efficiency of charge separation in TNB-linked complexes compared with DNB-linked complexes, the reverse trend observed has been attributed to orientational effects. In the complexes containing free-base porphyrin donors, PET is expected to be less efficient from a thermodynamic viewpoint. In a few of these cases, fluorescence quenching seems to occur by parallel mechanisms other than PET.

The present investigation explores the adaptability of a microwave assisted route to obtain silver nanoparticles by the reduction of AgNO3 with vanillin, an environmentally benign material. Anionic surfactants such as AOT and SDS were used separately for encapsulating AgNPs and their role was compared. The UV-Visible absorption spectra present a broad SPR band consisting of two peaks suggesting the formation of silver nanoparticle with bimodal size distribution. The TEM image shows particles with spherical and hexagonal morphologies which confirms the results of UV-Vis studies. The anisotropy in the particle morphology can be attributed to the surface oxidation which in turn produces Ag@Ag2O core-shell nanostructures. Thus an intriguing feature of this system is that the obtained colloid is a mixture of AgNPs with and without Ag2O layers. Studies on the influence of pH on the stability of the synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the presence of excess Ag2O layers has a profound influence on it. Ag2O layers can be removed from AgNPs' surface by changing the solution pH to the acidic regime. The present study attests the enhanced ability of AOT in stabilizing the AgNPs in aqueous media. This article describes a facile, low-cost, solution-phase approach to the large-scale preparation of Hg1-xCdxTe nanostructures of different shapes such as nanorods, quantum dots, hexagonal cubes of different sizes and different compositions at a growth temperature of 180 degrees C using an air stable Te source by solvothermal technique. The XRD spectrum shows that the crystals are cubic in their basic structure and reveals the variation in lattice constant as a function of composition. The size and morphology of the products were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of irregular shaped particles and few nano-rods in the present synthesis is attributed to the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The room temperature FTIR absorption and PL studies for a compositon of x = 0.8 gives a band gap of 1.1 eV and a broad emission in NIR region (0.5-0.9 eV) with all bands attributed to surface defects.

We measure the Cu 2p X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) of Sr2CuO3 and analyze it by means of exact diagonalization calculations for (CunO3n)(4n-) clusters. In Sr2CuO3, the intensity ratio of the 3d(y) satellite to the 3d(10)(L) under bar main line is 0.35-0.4, which is evidently smaller than that in the other high-T-c related cuprates. We ascribe it as the smaller charge-transfer energy between the Cu 3d and O 2p. The origin of the broad main-line of Sr2CuO3 is also discussed.

Sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) is a homotetramer of M(r) 213,000 requiring pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) as cofactor, Removal of PLP from the holoenzyme converted the enzyme to the apo form which, in addition to being inactive, was devoid of the characteristic absorption spectrum. Upon the addition of PLP to the apoenzyme, complete activity was restored and the visible absorption spectrum with a maximum at 425 nm was regained. The interaction of PLP with the apoenzyme revealed two phases of reaction with pseudo-first-order rate constants of 20 +/- 5 s(-1) and 12.2 +/- 2.0 x 10(-3) s(-1), respectively. However, addition of PLP to the apoenzyme did not cause gross conformational changes as evidenced by circular dichroic and fluorescence spectroscopy. Although conformationally apoenzyme and holoenzyme were indistinguishable, they had distinct apparent melting temperatures of 51 +/- 2 and 58 +/- 2 degrees C, respectively, and the reconstituted holoenzyme was thermally as stable as the native holoenzyme. These results suggested that there was no apparent difference in the secondary structure of holoenzyme, apoenzyme, and reconstituted holoenzyme, However, sedimentation analysis of the apoenzyme revealed the presence of two peaks of S-20,S-w values of 8.7 +/- 0.5 and 5.7 +/- 0.3 S, respectively. A similar pattern was observed when the apoenzyme was chromatographed on a calibrated Sephadex G-150 column. The first peak corresponded to the tetrameric form (M(r) 200,000 +/- 15,000) while the second peak had a M(r) of 130,000 +/- 10,000. Reconstitution experiments revealed that only the tetrameric form of the apoenzyme could be converted into an active holoenzyme while the dimeric form could not be reconstituted into an active enzyme. These results demonstrate that PLP plays an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of the enzyme by preventing the dissociation of the enzyme into subunits, in addition to its function in catalysis. Cu (0.1 mol%) doped ZnO nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were used for characterization. PXRD results confirm that the nanopowders exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO without any secondary phase. The particle size of as-formed product has been calculated by Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and Scherrer's formula is found to be in the range of similar to 40 nm. TEM image confirms the nano size crystalline nature of Cu doped ZnO. SEM micrographs of undoped and Cu doped ZnO show highly porous with large voids. UV-Vis spectrum showed a red shift in the absorption edge in Cu doped ZnO. PL spectra show prominent peaks corresponding to near band edge UV emission and defect related green emission in the visible region at room temperature and their possible mechanisms have been discussed. The EPR spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049, and two narrow resonances one at g similar to 1.990 and other at g similar to 1.950. The broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049 is a characteristic of Cu2+ ion whereas the signal at g similar to 1.990 and g similar to 1.950 can be attributed to ionized oxygen vacancies and shallow donors respectively. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (X) have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Non-resonant microwave absorption is studied as a function of temperature and composition in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7/CuO ceramic composite samples. In pure YBa2Cu3O7 only normal field dependence of the absorption is observed, where as in composites an anomalous non-monotonic field dependence is seen. The results are explained using an extended resistively shunted junction model and invoking the occurrence of junctions with phase difference psi(0) such that pi/2 < psi(0) < 3 pi/2. A series of oxides LnBaCuCoO(5) (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Dy, Gd, Ho and Er) have been synthesized by ceramic method. The oxides crystallize in a tetragonal structure, isostructural to YBaCuCoO5. All the oxides in the series are semiconducting. IR spectra of these oxides show distinct absorption bands at 630 cm(-1), 550 cm(-1) and 330 cm(-1) which are assigned to E, A(2) and A(1) modes respectively. Doping of holes in these oxides, by calcium substitution in Er1-xCaxBaCuCoO5-x (up to x similar or equal to 0.3) was done but, these oxides did not show metallic behaviour.
