A moving image work co-commissioned by the Science Museum (London), with extensive unprecedented access to the Oramics archive at Goldsmiths College and the Science Museum. Conceived of as an Artist's film in homage to Daphne Oram, the pioneer of British Electronic Music and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic workshop in 1958, the film features a close-up encounter with her unique invention, the Oramics Machine, housed at the Science Museum in London. Oram used drawn sound principles to compose ‘handwrought' electronic music, and yet the visual nature of her work remains largely unseen and unsung. A moving image work based on research with neurologists and audiologists, collectors and archivists. The film gives voice to the idea that every surface, in particular parts of our anatomy, is potentially inscribed with an unheard sound or echoes of voices from the past. The soundtrack’s musical composition is interlaced with a voice-over which draws on Rainer Maria Rilke’s text 'Primal Sound', where he reflects on the possibility of playing the coronal suture of a skull with a phonograph needle. The film uses microscopic photography, scanning electron microscopy, and sounds of otoacoustic emissions to uncover haunting aural bonescapes. The voiceovers too are recorded using old sound technology as a filter - writing and over-writing of wax cylinder to create unexpected scratches, glitches, loops and echoes. Chromatic Aberration is a film installation which explores the early technologies of colour filmmaking drawn from the archives of George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. Featuring vibrant close-ups of eyes from fledgling archival experiments in colour film, Chromatic Aberration turns the cinematic lens in on itself: from the prosthetic recording eye of the camera, to an evocation of the abstract inner screen of one's eyelids. Early 1920s colour film footage - mainly tests shots featuring members of George Eastman's family as well as Hollywood stars of the time - is shot in such a way so as to reveal the inherent chromatic fringing, distortion and misalignment. Using specialist equipment at the BFI National Archive, London, the footage is reworked through the use of extreme close-up and magnification, honing in on the eyes. The installation evokes an imagined abstract colour world, a flickering eyelid trapped in a mechanical peephole. Between the Bullet and the Hole is a film centred on the elusive and complex effects of war on women's role in ballistic research and early computing. The film features new and archival high-speed bullet photography, schlieren and electric spark imagery, bullet sound wave imagery, forensic ballistic photography, slide rulers, punch cards, computer diagrams, and a soundtrack by Scanner. Like a frantic animation storyboard, it explores the flickering space between the frames, testing the perceptual mechanics of visual interpolation, the possibility of reading or deciphering the gap between before and after. Interpolation - the main task of the women studying ballistics in WW2 - is the construction or guessing of missing data using only two known data points. The film tries to unpack this gap, open it up to interrogation. It questions how we read, interpolate or construct the gaps between bullet and hole, perpetrator and victim, presence and absence. The project involves exchanges with specialists in this area such as the Cranfield University Forensics department, London-based Forensic Firearms consultancy, the Imperial War Museum, the ENIAC programmers project, the Smithsonian Institute, and Forensic Scientists at Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (USA). This thesis investigates the use and significance of X-ray crystallographic visualisations of molecular structures in postwar British material culture across scientific practice and industrial design. It is based on research into artefacts from three areas: X-ray crystallographers’ postwar practices of visualising molecular structures using models and diagrams; the Festival Pattern Group scheme for the 1951 Festival of Britain, in which crystallographic visualisations formed the aesthetic basis of patterns for domestic objects; and postwar furnishings with a ‘ball-and-rod’ form and construction reminiscent of those of molecular models. A key component of the project is methodological. The research brings together subjects, themes and questions traditionally covered separately by two disciplines, the history of design and history of science. This focus necessitated developing an interdisciplinary set of methods, which results in the reassessment of disciplinary borders and productive cross-disciplinary methodological applications. This thesis also identifies new territory for shared methods: it employs network models to examine cross-disciplinary interaction between practitioners in crystallography and design, and a biographical approach to designed objects that over time became mediators of historical narratives about science. Artefact-based, archival and oral interviewing methods illuminate the production, use and circulation of the objects examined in this research. This interdisciplinary approach underpins the generation of new historical narratives in this thesis. It revises existing histories of the cultural transmissions between X-ray crystallography and the production and reception of designed objects in postwar Britain. I argue that these transmissions were more complex than has been acknowledged by historians: they were contingent upon postwar scientific and design practices, material conditions in postwar Britain and the dynamics of historical memory, both scholarly and popular. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one explores X-ray crystallographers’ visualisation practices, conceived here as a form of craft. Chapter two builds on this, demonstrating that the Festival Pattern Group witnesses the encounter between crystallographic practice, design practice and aesthetic ideologies operating within social networks associated with postwar modernisms. Chapters three and four focus on ball-and-rod furnishings in postwar and present-day Britain, respectively. I contend that strong relationships between these designed objects and crystallographic visualisations, for example the appellation ‘atomic design’, have been largely realised through historical narratives active today in the consumption of ‘retro’ and ‘mid-century modern’ artefacts. The attention to contemporary historical narratives necessitates this dual historical focus: the research is rooted in the period from the end of the Second World War until the early 1960s, but extends to the history of now. This thesis responds to the need for practical research on methods for studying cross-disciplinary interactions and their histories. It reveals the effects of submitting historical subjects that are situated on disciplinary boundaries to interdisciplinary interpretation. Old models, such as that of unidirectional ‘influence’, subside and the resulting picture is a refracted one: this study demonstrates that the material form and meaning of crystallographic visualisations, within scientific practice and across their use and echoes in designed objects, are multiple and contingent.

This dissertation is an explanation of a methodology applied to the making of a comic book, with all that implies. The various stages of this process will be described, from the time when there was the decision to have ideas for the script to its finalization and subsequent publication of the album "Deixa-me Entrar". With this we intend to scrutinize how the inherent problems were solved in all these steps, either in the narrative construction method, as the visual part, such as drawing, coloring and subtitling were performed always seeking quality, not compromising the quality of the work. The time frame of the book was short since it was aimed for release during the twenty-fifth International Comics Festival of Amadora 2014, one of the main events of this kind in comic book releases. It can be said that this is one of the many events that are part of the context in which the practical component of this work fits, and so it is indispensable to context Comics in Portugal, specifically in a time window since the early twenty-first century, talking about relevant authors in recent years. In this explanation were also described some contractual bureaucracies that had to comply with the publisher "Polvo" and how the dialogue between author and publisher was done. Were also exposed advertising strategies through various platforms as well as how the book was received and concluded how the applied methodology resulted in this case study

The thesis provides an historical overview of the artist biopic that has emerged as a distinct sub-genre of the biopic as a whole, totalling some ninety films from Europe and America alone since the first talking artist biopic in 1934. Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies. These examples can then be used as models for exploring similar sets of data from other countries and time periods. The specific topics chosen for discussion include the representation of a single painter, for example, Vincent Van Gogh, to see how the treatment of an artist varies across several countries and over seventy years. British artist biopics are analysed as a case study in relation to the idea of them posing as a national stereotype. Topics within sex and gender studies are highlighted in analysis of the representation of the female artist and the queer artist as well as artists who have lived together as couples. A number of well-known gallery artists have become directors of artist biopics and their films are considered to see what particular insights a professional working artist can bring to the portrayal of artistic genius and creation. In the concluding part of the thesis it is argued that the artist biopic overall has survived the bad press which some individual productions have received and can even be said to have matured under the influence of directors producing a quality product for the art house, festival and avant-garde distribution circuits. As a genre it has proved extremely adaptable and has reflected the changing attitudes towards art and artists within the wider community. It has both encouraged renewed interest in the work of established national artists and also raised the profile of those relatively obscure such as Séraphine de Senlis and Pirosmani.

O aumento da popularidade e da diversidade dos Festivais de Verão, a que temos assistido nos últimos anos, quer a nivel nacional e internacional, explica o interesse no desenvolvimento de um estudo sobre a eficácia das marcas patrocinadoras e o impacto nos mesmos tanto a nivel de conhecimento e consumo. Quando uma marca é patrocinadora de um Festival de Verão tem como principal objetivo que os seus participantes a identifiquem como tal e, consequentemente, passem a ser consumidores dando a conhecer a essência da marca, seus produtos e serviços associados. O presente estudo visa analisar até que ponto a associação da marca ao festival e o aumento do consumo são concretizados. Neste sentido, foi desenvolvido um estudo empírico de carácter quantitativo sobre as atitudes dos consumidores face ao patrocínio de marcas a festivais de música em Portugal. Os festivais seleccionados foram: Meo Marés Vivas, Nos Primavera Sound e Vodafone Paredes de Coura. O grande objectivo consistiu na avaliação da perceção dos consumidores de festivais de Verão nas marcas patrocinadoras dos mesmos. Tendo em conta os objetivos desta dissertação concluímos que, de uma maneira geral, que estes festivais são frequentados essencialmente por estudantes, com idades compreendidas entre 16 e 22 anos. Após análise das variáveis, as marcas patrocinadoras influenciam positivamente o consumidor, no que concerne à recordação/notoriedade da marca e à lealdade na com a mesma. Relativamente à identificação dos patrocinadores, verificou-se que as marcas mais associadas são as que possuem relação semântica com o festival e são, também, as que possuem maior consumo, notoriedade e relevância no mercado. O Vodafone Paredes de Coura destaca-se por ser o festival o que provocou mais atitudes positivas por parte dos inquiridos.

Através da observação desenvolvida durante o estágio curricular no FESTin - Festival de Cinema Itinerante da Língua Portuguesa – procuro compreender de que forma a conjuntura política nos países seleccionados para competição na 6.ª Edição deste Festival (Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Moçambique e Portugal) influencia a cinematografia apresentada e discutida durante o mesmo. Sublinhando a relevância de acompanhar a construção de uma identidade cultural para a união dos povos de língua portuguesa, aprofundo neste documento as preocupações presentes em cada um e introduzidas nas respectivas produções cinematográficas: desde as migrações, as guerras, o meio ambiente, a saúde, o sistema político vigente, a relação entre tradição e modernidade, entre outras. Ao aliar o conhecimento político adquirido na licenciatura em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais (FCSH-UNL) e a sensibilidade analítica para as questões cinematográficas conquistada durante a componente lectiva deste mestrado, tenho em consideração a relação entre o cinema nacional e os grandes acontecimentos político-sociais, incindido sobre a dimensão subjectiva e auto-reflexiva do cinema como esforço para construção de uma identitária nacional.

The purpose of this thesis is to get a consumer perspective regarding event marketing in music festivals. Event marketing is a tool used by marketers that evolved out of philanthropy and commercial sponsorship. Brands are more and more using music or other entertainment moments to create a strong relationship with their clients, and the target group at these events, the millennial generation. Brands use sponsoring and therefore event marketing for several reasons as: increase brand awareness; create brand image; re-position the brand/product in the minds of consumers; increase profit over a short period; and, achieve larger market share. Nonetheless, we wonder how is this tool seen by consumers? To understand this, a preliminary research with nine interviews was conducted to obtain basic ideas about event marketing. Afterwards the main research was developed, also using interviews, to get deeper insights. With this thesis, it is possible to conclude that some brands are able to create brand awareness on attendees through brand sponsorship. Moreover, entertainment activities in festivals are well seen by consumers, they like it and are able to describe it well, even though it is more about the activity itself than the brand promoting it. Furthermore, it was possible to understand that experiential marketing in a festival might have a positive effect on consumers as it might create a link between the event and the brand. Finally, we recommend some actions, for brands to develop in future music festivals.
