Over the last decades the need for translation and interpreting services has increased thanks to globalization and to the progress made in the technology field. However, the organizations which provide these services, the so-called translation agencies or translation companies, are still underrated and, in some cases, virtually unknown to those people who do not belong to the translation market. The present work aims to answer all the most common questions about these companies by describing in as much detail as possible all their aspects, mechanisms, workflows and characteristics. Chapter one introduces translation agencies outlining, in the first place, some of their main definitions and classifications. Particular attention is also devoted to the translation market, to the main trade associations in the field, to the quality standards adopted and to the important role played by social media for the success of translation agencies. Chapter two starts with a theoretical introduction to the concept of “organization” and an examination of the main types of teams commonly adopted in companies, i.e. virtual and traditional. This introduction is then followed by an analysis of the typical workflows taking place in translation agencies, the main professionals involved (such as Project Managers, translators and reviewers) and their essential competences. Finally, chapter three presents a comparison between a traditional translation agency, i.e., Going Green Translations, characterized by a physical office and internal collaborators, and a more innovative translation agency, Qabiria, which on the contrary relies on a completely decentralized team. The interviews have allowed me to highlight similarities and differences as well as advantages and disadvantages of these agencies and their teams. The chapter concludes with a personal commentary on what has emerged from the comparison, and on the future of translation companies.

I Social Network sono una fonte di informazioni di natura spontanea, non guidata, provviste di posizione spaziale e prodotte in tempo reale. Il Social Sensing si basa sull'idea che gruppi di persone possano fornire informazioni, su eventi che accadono nelle loro vicinanze, simili a quelle ottenibili da sensori. La letteratura in merito all’utilizzo dei Social Media per il rilevamento di eventi catastrofici mostra una struttura comune: acquisizione, filtraggio e classificazione dei dati. La piattaforma usata, nella maggior parte dei lavori e da noi, è Twitter. Proponiamo un sistema di rilevamento di eventi per l’Emilia Romagna, tramite l’analisi di tweet geolocalizzati. Per l’acquisizione dei dati abbiamo utilizzato le Twitter API. Abbiamo effettuato due passaggi per il filtraggio dei tweet. Primo, selezione degli account di provenienza dei tweet, se non sono personali è improbabile che siano usati per dare informazioni e non vanno tenuti in considerazione. Secondo, il contenuto dei tweet, vengono scartati se presentano termini scurrili, parole come “buon giorno” e un numero di tag, riferiti ad altri utenti, superiore a quattro. La rilevazione di un valore anomalo rispetto all'insieme delle osservazioni che stiamo considerando (outlier), è il primo indice di un evento eccezionale. Per l’analisi siamo ricorsi all’outlier detection come indice di rilevamento di un evento. Fatta questa prima analisi si controlla che ci sia un effettivo picco di tweet in una zona della regione. Durante il periodo di attività non sono accaduti eventi straordinari, abbiamo quindi simulato un avvenimento per testare l'efficacia del nostro sistema. La maggior difficoltà è che i dati geolocalizzati sono in numero molto esiguo, è quindi difficile l'identificazione dei picchi. Per migliorare il sistema si propone: il passaggio a streaming dei tweet e un aumento della velocità di filtraggio; la automatizzazione dei filtri; l'implementazione di un modulo finale che operi a livello del testo.

Big data e turismo è il tema principale di questa tesi: esamina l'utilizzo dei social media come mezzo di interazione tra turisti e albergatori, prendendo come riferimento la piattaforma di booking Expedia.com e come campione di hotel tutti gli hotel della penisola italiana. In particolare si vogliono studiare i due tipi di utenti che utilizzano questo tipo di piatta forma, ovvero turisti e albergatori. Dei turisti si vuole capire il loro livello di attività su social media, calcolando l'andamento delle recensioni postate; poi si passa ad uno studio della singola recensione e infine si è cercato di stabilire le preferenze dei turisti in base alle valutazioni. Anche per quanto riguarda l'altra tipologia di utenti, ovvero gli albergatori, si è voluto capire quanto utilizzino Expedia, studiando le risposte alle recensioni. Infine, tramite un confronto tra la distribuzione delle recensioni suddivise per lingua tra le varie regioni italiane, e i dati ENIT del turismo, si è voluto rilevare se vi e una correlazione tra recensioni e densità di turismo.

Negli ultimi anni i documenti web hanno attratto molta attenzione, poiché vengono visti come un nuovo mezzo che porta quello che sono le esperienze ed opinioni di un individuo da una parte all'altra del mondo, raggiungendo quindi persone che mai si incontreranno. Ed è proprio con la proliferazione del Web 2.0 che l’attenzione è stata incentrata sul contenuto generato dagli utenti della rete, i quali hanno a disposizione diverse piattaforme sulle quali condividere i loro pensieri, opinioni o andare a cercarne di altrui, magari per valutare l’acquisto di uno smartphone piuttosto che un altro o se valutare l’opzione di cambiare operatore telefonico, ponderando quali potrebbero essere gli svantaggi o i vantaggi che otterrebbe modificando la sia situazione attuale. Questa grande disponibilità di informazioni è molto preziosa per i singoli individui e le organizzazioni, che devono però scontrarsi con la grande difficoltà di trovare le fonti di tali opinioni, estrapolarle ed esprimerle in un formato standard. Queste operazioni risulterebbero quasi impossibili da eseguire a mano, per questo è nato il bisogno di automatizzare tali procedimenti, e la Sentiment Analysis è la risposta a questi bisogni. Sentiment analysis (o Opinion Mining, come è chiamata a volte) è uno dei tanti campi di studio computazionali che affronta il tema dell’elaborazione del linguaggio naturale orientato all'estrapolazione delle opinioni. Negli ultimi anni si è rilevato essere uno dei nuovi campi di tendenza nel settore dei social media, con una serie di applicazioni nel campo economico, politico e sociale. Questa tesi ha come obiettivo quello di fornire uno sguardo su quello che è lo stato di questo campo di studio, con presentazione di metodi e tecniche e di applicazioni di esse in alcuni studi eseguiti in questi anni.

Ogni giorno vengono generati grandi moli di dati attraverso sorgenti diverse. Questi dati, chiamati Big Data, sono attualmente oggetto di forte interesse nel settore IT (Information Technology). I processi digitalizzati, le interazioni sui social media, i sensori ed i sistemi mobili, che utilizziamo quotidianamente, sono solo un piccolo sottoinsieme di tutte le fonti che contribuiscono alla produzione di questi dati. Per poter analizzare ed estrarre informazioni da questi grandi volumi di dati, tante sono le tecnologie che sono state sviluppate. Molte di queste sfruttano approcci distribuiti e paralleli. Una delle tecnologie che ha avuto maggior successo nel processamento dei Big Data, e Apache Hadoop. Il Cloud Computing, in particolare le soluzioni che seguono il modello IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), forniscono un valido strumento all'approvvigionamento di risorse in maniera semplice e veloce. Per questo motivo, in questa proposta, viene utilizzato OpenStack come piattaforma IaaS. Grazie all'integrazione delle tecnologie OpenStack e Hadoop, attraverso Sahara, si riesce a sfruttare le potenzialita offerte da un ambiente cloud per migliorare le prestazioni dell'elaborazione distribuita e parallela. Lo scopo di questo lavoro e ottenere una miglior distribuzione delle risorse utilizzate nel sistema cloud con obiettivi di load balancing. Per raggiungere questi obiettivi, si sono rese necessarie modifiche sia al framework Hadoop che al progetto Sahara.

La Sentiment analysis, nata nell'ambito dell’informatica, è una delle aree di ricerca più attive nel campo dell’analisi del linguaggio naturale e si è diffusa ampiamente anche in altri rami scientifici come ad esempio le scienze sociali, l’economia e il marketing. L’enorme diffusione della sentiment analysis coincide con la crescita dei cosiddetti social media: siti di commercio e recensioni di prodotti, forum di discussione, blog, micro-blog e di vari social network. L'obiettivo del presente lavoro di tesi è stato quello di progettare un sistema di sentiment analysis in grado di rilevare e classificare le opinioni e i sentimenti espressi tramite chat dagli utenti della piattaforma di video streaming Twitch.tv. Per impostare ed organizzare il lavoro, giungendo quindi alla definizione del sistema che ci si è proposti di realizzare, sono stati utilizzati vari modelli di analisi in particolare le recurrent neural networks (RNNLM) e sistemi di word embedding (word2vec),nello specifico i Paragraph Vectors, applicandoli, dapprima, su dati etichettati in maniera automatica attraverso l'uso di emoticon e, successivamente, su dati etichettati a mano.

The aim of the web-based course “Advertising Psychology – The Blog Seminar” was to offer a contemporary teaching design using typical Web 2.0 characteristics such as comments, discussions and social media integration which covers facebook and Twitter support, as nowadays, this is a common part of students’ everyday life. This weblog (blog)-based seminar for Advertising Psychology was set up in order to make the course accessible to students from different campuses in the Ruhr metropolitan area. The technical aspect of the open-source content management system Drupal 6.0 and the didactical course structure, based on Merrill’s five first principles of instruction, are introduced. To date, this blog seminar has been conducted three times with a total of 84 participants, who were asked to rate the course according to the benefits of different didactical elements and with regard to Kirkpatrick’s levels of evaluation model. This model covers a) reactions such as reported enjoyment, perceived usefulness and perceived difficulty, and b) effects on learning through the subjectively reported increase in knowledge and attitude towards the seminar. Overall, the blog seminar was evaluated very positively and can be considered as providing support for achieving the learning objectives. However, a successful blended learning approach should always be tailored to the learning contents and the environment.

Logistiknetzwerke von Unternehmen wachsen sehr schnell und werden immer komplexer. Unternehmen wissen oft nicht, von welchen anderen Unternehmen sie abhängig sind und welche geschäftskritischen Risiken sich daraus für sie ergeben. Aus diesem Grund wird in diesem Artikel ein Konzept eines proaktiven Ri-sikomanagements in Logistiknetzwerken vorgestellt. Das Konzept basiert auf der Big Data Technologie und verwendet zur Identifikation von Risiken und zum Aufbau eines Logistiknetzwerkes neben internen Unternehmensdaten auch externe Daten, z. B. Social Media Plattformen oder andere Datenportale. Diese Daten werden ausgewertet und mit Risiken behaftete Beziehungen werden dem Bediener grafisch angezeigt. Zusätzlich dazu kann das System dem Benutzer mögliche Alternativen zur Vermeidung dieser Risiken aufzeigen und somit zur Entscheidungsunterstützung genutzt werden.

Since the emergence of the Internet and Social Media, privacy concerns and need for regulation in this area have been a frequent subject on the agenda of numerous stakeholders and policy-makers worldwide. Contributing to this debate, this paper builds on the responses of 553 Internet users to uncover users’ current privacy concerns and their attitudes towards legal assurances in this context. Our findings suggest that users have a complex attitude towards these issues. While they express strong concerns about privacy when asked directly, they often have difficulties formulating the exact nature of these concerns. In the Facebook context, Facebook itself is often mentioned as the primary source of threat, closely followed by marketing organizations. Users feel ill-protected by existing legal framework, especially when using Social Networking Sites. Reasons include common beliefs that the law is unable to address complexities of the Internet; local character of laws; possibilities to disregard the law, particularly since enforcement is difficult. Overall, positive changes in legal framework are desirable, with many respondents willing to pay more in taxes to ensure progress in this area.

Shaped by factors like global outreach and immediacy, particularly the internet represents the multi-layered nature of contemporary globalization (cf Held et al. 2002). How have digital newspapers, social media and other internet platforms altered the situation of smaller music microcultues, especially in regions that have been on the fringes of global networks? This paper analyses the situation of the Latvian postfolklore band Ilgi between 2001 and 2008. Focusing on the group’s label UPE, the paper highlights how the internet became a significant means of existence during this specific period. Having established a local niche with a sound studio and CD shops, UPE combined this physical basis with outreach strategies, such as marketing and direct internet sales, which guaranteed the survival of the independent label. This strategy was also taken up by the band itself who started to develop a strong presence on social media like MySpace. At the same time, Ilgi has been using the internet as a central means of communicating with diasporic communities in the U.S. and Canada – hereby creating structures that were described as « intercultures » by Slobin (1993). This indicates that the local-global dichotomy can no longer be sufficiently addressed by a horizontal or vertical two-dimensional perception. Falling also back on the fieldwork experiences gained in Latvia, the paper finally addresses the question of how internet representation relates to the actual local situation – and how this has been altering the fieldwork perception. With regard to this situation – how useful are the approaches that have been developed within the context of « Media Anthropology » that investigates mass media items as multi-layered, densified symbolic objects?

Kosrae is the most remote island of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), with a population of less than 7,000 inhabitants, located in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Guam. FSM is an independent sovereign nation consisting of four states in total: Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae. Having passed through the hands of Spain, Germany and Japan, the United States gained administrative control of FSM after WWII, as commissioned by the UN. The FSM became an independent nation in 1986 while still retaining affiliation with the US under a ‘Compact of Free Association’. Now both Kosraean and English are considered to be the two official languages and the variety of Kosraean English which has arisen proves for an interesting comparative study. In order to obtain the relevant data, I spent three months on the island of Kosrae, interviewing 90 local speakers, ranging in age (16-70), occupation, sex and time spent off island. The 45 minute long interviews were informal but supported by participant information to capture relevant data and conversations were guided in a way that aimed to reveal language and cultural attitudes. With reference to these samples, I examine the effects of American English on the language use in Kosrae. This paper aims to present a broad analysis of phonological, morphosyntactic and pragmatic features, such as pro-dropping, discourse markers and other practices in order to demonstrate the similarities and differences between the two varieties, which are coming to shape the variety developing on Kosrae. Having transcribed conversations using the tool Elan, I will put particular focus on [h] deletion and insertion, a rare occurrence found in a variety of post-colonial American English which I believe is of particular interest. I assess the presence of English in Kosrae with reference to sociological influences, past and present. First, I discuss the extralinguistic factors which have shaped the English that is currently used on Kosrae, including migration between US and FSM, and English as a language of administration, social media usage and visual media presence. Secondly, I assess the use of English in this community in light of Schneider’s (2007) ‘Dynamic Model’, with reference to America’s contribution as an ‘exploitation colony’ as defined by Mufwene (2001). Finally, an overview of the salient linguistic characteristics of Kosraean English, based on the data collected will be presented and compared to features associated with standard American English in view of examining overlap and divergence. The overall objective is to present a cross-linguistic description of a hitherto unexamined English emerging in a postcolonial environment with a juxtaposed contact variety. In this research, we investigated the association between narcissism and one central aspect of empathy, susceptibility for emotional contagion (the transfer of emotional states from one person to another). In an experimental study (N=101), we were able to compare actual susceptibility for emotional contagion (as indicated by a change in emotions that converges with the emotions of another person) and self-reported susceptibility for emotional contagion (assessed via questionnaire). Results showed that in the case of positive emotions, narcissists were actually less susceptible to emotional contagion than individuals low in narcissism. At the same time, however, narcissists believed they were more susceptible to contagion of positive emotions. Thus, narcissists were less likely to “catch the positive emotions” of others than individuals low in narcissism, but at the same time lacked the self-insight capabilities to notice this.

Background. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of the Young Leaders for Healthy Change program, an internet-delivered program in the school setting that emphasized health advocacy skills-development, on nutrition and physical activity behaviors among older adolescents (13–18 years). The program consisted of online curricular modules, training modules, social media, peer and parental support, and a community service project. Module content was developed based on Social Cognitive Theory and known determinants of behavior for older adolescents. ^ Methods. Of the 283 students who participated in the fall 2011 YL program, 38 students participated in at least ten of the 12 weeks and were eligible for this study. This study used a single group-only pretest/posttest evaluation design. Participants were 68% female, 58% white/Caucasian, 74% 10th or 11th graders, and 89% mostly A and/or B students. The primary behavioral outcomes for this analysis were participation in 60-minutes of physical activity per day, 20-minutes of vigorous- or moderate- intensity physical activity (MVPA) participation per day, television and computer time, fruit and vegetable (FV) intake, sugar-sweetened beverage intake, and consumption of breakfast, home-cooked meals, and fast food. Other outcomes included knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes related to healthy eating, physical activity, and advocacy skills. ^ Findings. Among the 38 participants, no significant changes in any variables were observed. However, among those who did not previously meet behavioral goals there was an 89% increase in students who participated in more than 20 minutes of MVPA per day and a 58% increase in students who ate home-cooked meals 5–7 days per week. The majority of participants met program goals related to knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes prior to the start of the program. Participants reported either maintaining or improving to the goal at posttest for all items except FV intake knowledge, taste and affordability of healthy foods, interest in teaching others about being healthy, and ease of finding ways to advocate in the community. ^ Conclusions. The results of this evaluation indicated that promoting healthy behaviors requires different strategies than maintaining healthy behaviors among high school students. In the school setting, programs need to target the promotion and maintenance of health behaviors to engage all students who participate in the program as part of a class or club activity. Tailoring the program using screening and modifying strategies to meet the needs of all students may increase the potential reach of the program. The Transtheoretical Model may provide information on how to develop a tailored program. Additional research on how to utilize the constructs of TTM effectively among high school students needs to be conducted. Further evaluation studies should employ a more expansive evaluation to assess the long-term effectiveness of health advocacy programming.^

Para una lectura más apacible y agradable, es preciso saber hacia dónde apunta la investigación. Para ello es necesario plantear desde el comienzo cuáles son los objetivos. Estas metas, a su vez, marcan la estructura que sigue este texto. En primer lugar, se desea entender qué es el Marketing 2.0 y cómo se relaciona con la Web 2.0. Toda esta información podrá encontrarse en la primer parte de este escrito denominada “CONCEPTOS CLAVES". En segundo lugar, se desea describir qué es el medio social y cuáles son sus características, además de destacar la importancia que tiene hoy en día para el éxito de las organizaciones. Todo ello puede encontrarse en la segunda parte llamada “SOCIAL MEDIA" En tercera instancia, se plantea una investigación empírica sobre las “ACCIONES ESTRATÉGICAS"utilizadas actualmente en social media para alcanzar el éxito. Para ello se han creado cuentas de usuario en las principales redes sociales (Facebook, Twitter y YouTube) y se han analizado durante un mes las acciones que llevan a cabo diferentes tipos de organizaciones e individuos que demuestran éxito en su comportamiento social (por ejemplo, dirigentes políticos, empresas multinacionales y locales, organizaciones sin fines de lucro, personalidades del espectáculo, escritores, etc.). El objetivo principal de este seguimiento es identificar y clasificar las diferentes acciones que se pueden seguir en las redes sociales. Sin decir con ello que sean las únicas estrategias que se pueden llevar a cabo o que sean más o menos eficientes. Por último, se concluye la investigación con un cuarto apartado denominado “DESAFÍOS PARA EL FUTURO", donde se plantean las principales oportunidades y amenazas que presenta este entorno.
