Separation of scandium(III), yttrium(III) and lanthanum(III) was performed by high-performance centrifugal partition chromatography (HPCPC) employing the stationary phase of S-octyl phenyloxy acetic acid (CA-12). The liquid-liquid extraction behavior of CA-12 for Sc(III), Y(III) and La(III), the acidity of aqueous phase, and the operation conditions of HPCPC were examined. The retention volume (V-R) increased with the order of Y(III), La(III) and Sc(III) accompanied with the elution of the mobile phase in different pH, which is lowered from 4.6 to 2.1.

Noncrosslinking linear low-density polyethylene-grafted acrylic acid (LLDPE-g-AA) was prepared by melt-reactive extrusion in our laboratory. The thermal behavior of LLDPE-g-AA was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with neat linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), melting temperature (T-m) of LLDPE-g-AA increased a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 4degreesC, and the melting enthalpy (DeltaH(m) ) decreased with an increase in acrylic acid content. Isothermal crystallization kinetics of LLDPE and LLDPE-g-AA samples were carried out by using DSC. The overall crystallization rate of LLDPE was smaller than that of grafted samples. It showed that the grafted acrylic acid monomer onto LLDPE acted as a nucleating agent. Crystal morphologies of LLDPE-g-AA and LLDPE were examined by using SEM. Spherulite sizes of LLDPE-g-AA samples were lower than that of LLDPE.

The chain structure, spherulite morphology, and theological property of LL-DPE-g-AA were studied by using electronspray mass spectroscopy, C-13-NMR, and rheometer. Experimental evidence proved that AA monomers grafted onto the LLDPE backbone formed multiunit AA branch chains. It was found that AA branch chains could hinder movement of the LLDPE main chain during crystallization. Spherulites of LLDPE became more anomalous because of the presence of AA branch chains. Rheological behavior showed that AA branch chains could act as an inner plasticizer at the temperature range of 170-200 degreesC, which made LLDPE-g-AA easy to further process. The novel amino-acid-containing polyoxometalate Ka(6) [Cu(Ala)(2) (H2O)(2)](2) [Cu-4 (H2O)(2) . (AsW9O34)(2)] . 16H(2)O was synthesized from the reaction of K-10[Cu-4(H2O)(2)(AsW9O34)(2)] . 20H(2)O with beta -alanine, Its structure has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar, with a=1. 196 3(2) nm, b=1. 536 5(3) nm, c=1. 591 4(3) nm, alpha =93. 97(3)degrees, beta= 110. 88(3)degrees, gamma =101. 07(3)degrees, V=2. 651 8(9) nm(3) and Z=1. Least-squares refinement of the structure leads to R and R-w factors of 0. 067 3 and 0. 162 8, respectively. An unusual structural feature of the compound is that the polyanion [Cu-4(H2O)(2) (AsW9O34)](10-) is linked with the amino-acid complex of Cu2+ by a mu -oxygen atom.

Selective crystallization of BaF2 crystals under a compressed Langmuir monolayer of behenic acid [CH3(CH2)(20)COOH] has been studied by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It was found that, in the absence of a monolayer, three kinds of crystals (Ba2ClF3, BaClF, and BaF2) can be obtained by mixing BaCl2 with a NH4F solution. However, in the presence of the monolayer of behenic acid, only BaF2 crystals appear at the monolayer-subphase interface and crystals have a special crystal face (100). During this process of crystallization, the monolayer plays a very important role and acts as a template that can preferentially select a special crystal and a special crystal face. The above results can be explained in terms of a specific molecular interaction between ions and the headgroups of the monolayer and specific electrostatic, geometric, and stereochemical interactions at the organic-inorganic interface.

Monodispersed phenyl-capped trianiline and tetraaniline were successfully synthesized by the reactions of diphenylamine with acetaldehyde-based Sckiff's bases of N-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine and 1,4-phenylenediamine, respectively, in the presence of ammonium persulfate and hydrochloric acid, subsequent deprotonation and reduction with phenylhydrazine. The reaction mechanism probably involves the slow hydrolysis of the Sckiff's bases and subsequent oxidative coupling reactions of the formed ammonium salts with diphenylamine at pseudo-high dilution condition of the salts.

2,2'-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride was used as a new monomer with various aromatic diamines to obtain polyimides by the usual two-step method. The bis(ether anhydride) was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of I,1'-bi-2-naphthol with N-phenyl-4-chlorophthalimide, N-methyl-4-nitrophthalimide or 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent, and subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting bis(ether imide)s or bis(ether dinitrile), and then dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acid to afford the dianhydride. Most of the obtained polyimides were soluble in chloroform, pyridine, DMF, etc. The polyimide prepared from p-phenylene diamine was partial crystalline, whereas the others showed amorphous patterns in a WAXD study. These polymers have glass transition temperatures between 255-294 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures in the range of 502-541 degrees C in nitrogen and 473-537 degrees C in air. Glucosamine sulfate was prepared from glucosamine hydrochloride that was produced by acidic hydrolysis of chitin by ion-exchange method. Optical rotation and elemental analysis characterized the degree of its purity. In addition, the antioxidant potency of chitosan derivative-glucosamine sulfate was investigated in various established in vitro systems, such as superoxide (O (2) (-) )/hydroxyl (center dot OH) radicals scavenging, reducing power, iron ion chelating. The following results are obtained: first, glucosamine sulfate had pronounced scavenging effect on superoxide radical. For example the O (2) (-) scavenging activity of glucosamine sulfate was 92.11% at 0.8 mg/mL. Second, the center dot OH scavenging activity of glucosamine sulfate was also strong, and was about 50% at 3.2 mg/mL. Third, the reducing power of glucosamine sulfate was more pronounced. The reducing power of glucosamine sulfate was 0.643 at 0.75 mg/mL. However, its potency for ferrous ion chelating was weak. Furthermore, except for ferrous ion chelating potency, the scavenging rate of radical and reducing power of glucosamine sulfate were concentration-dependent and increased with their increasing concentrations, but its ferrous ion chelating potency decreased with the increasing concentration. The multiple antioxidant activities of glucosamine sulfate were evidents of reducing power and superoxide/hydroxyl radicals scavenging ability. These in vitro results suggest the possibility that glucosamine sulfate could be used effectively as an ingredient in health or functional food, to alleviate oxidative stress.

In this paper, 20 kinds of different 2-(alpha-arylamino phosphonate)-chitosan (2-alpha-AAPCS) were prepared by different Schiff bases of chitosan (CS) reacted with di-alkyl phosphite in benzene solution. The structures of the derivatives (2-alpha-AAPCS) were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, the antifungal activities of the derivatives against four kinds of fungi were evaluated in the experiment. The results indicated that all the prepared 2-alpha-AAPCS had a significant inhibiting effect on the investigated fungi when the derivatives concentration ranged from 50 to 500 mu g mL(-1). Furthermore, the antifungal activities of the derivatives increased with increasing the molecular weight and concentration. And the antifungal activities of the derivatives were affected by their dimensional effect and charge density. Besides, the rule and mechanism of the antifungal activities of them were discussed in this paper. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of molecular weight and substitution degree of sulfated polysaccharides on their biological activity is considered in majority of works involving the anticoagulant or antiviral properties of these substances. Therefore, the present paper describes the effect of preparation conditions of sulfated chitosans on their molecular weight and sulfur content, such as different reaction time, acid solvent and temperature. Foregoing literature expounded the action of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) as acid solvent in homogeneous reaction. However, DCAA is expensive and noxious, therefore, in the present paper cheap and non-noxious formic acid (88%) was in place of DCAA. Furthermore, during reaction formic acid was not dehydrated. Under formic acid we obtained the satisfying results that was higher yield and equivalent sulfur contents compared to DCAA. IR and C-13 NMR spectrums proved the structure of the resultant obtained under formic acid or DCAA to be same. Now, it has not been reported for formic acid as acid solvent in homogeneous reaction of chitosan sulfatation. In this present paper, we also determined antioxidant activity of high-molecular weight and high-sulfate-content chitosans (HCTS). The results showed that HCTS could scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radical. Its IC50 is 0.012 and 3.269 mg/mL, respectively. It had obviously reducing power and slight chelating activity. The data obtained in in vitro models clearly establish the antioxidant potency of HCTS. It is a potential antioxidant in vitro. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In order to determine the effect of the forms of the amido groups of chitosan on antioxidant activity, quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) derivatives were prepared with a degree of quaternization ranging from 34.3% to 59.5%. The antioxidant activity of QCMCs against hydroxyl radicals was assessed. The results indicated that QCMCs have better hydroxyl radicals scavenging activity than that of carboxymethyl chitosan, as a result of the positive charge of the quaternized chitosan. N-substituted chitosan and quaternized chitosan were synthesized and their antioxidant activity against hydroxyl radicals was assessed, respectively. Compared with the antioxidant activity of chitosan, the results indicated that the two kinds of chitosan derivatives had different scavenging ability on hydroxyl radicals, which should be related to the form of amido in the two kinds of chitosan derivatives.
