Objective: Identifying the main causes for underreporting of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) by health professionals. Method: A systematic review carried out in the following databases: LILACS, PAHO, SciELO, EMBASE and PubMed in the period between 1992 and 2012. Descriptors were used in the search for articles, and the identified causes of underreporting were analyzed according to the classification of Inman. Results: In total, were identified 149 articles, among which 29 were selected. Most studies were carried out in hospitals (24/29) for physicians (22/29), and pharmacists (10/29). The main causes related to underreporting were ignorance (24/29), insecurity (24/29) and indifference (23/29). Conclusion: The data show the eighth sin in underreporting, which is the lack of training in pharmacovigilance. Therefore, continuing education can increase adherence of professionals to the service and improve knowledge and communication of risks due to drug use.

We investigated the prevalence of two reported mutations of the factor V gene (factor V Arg306 → Thr, or factor V Cambridge, and factor V Arg306 → Gly) in 104 relatively young patients with verified venous thrombosis and in 208 age-, sex- and race-matched controls, in order to establish whether the two mutations are associated with increased predisposition for venous thrombosis. PCR amplification followed by BstNI and MspI digestion was employed to determine the genotypes, and each mutation was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Among the controls, one individual was found to be heterozygous for the factor V Arg306 → Thr mutation and one heterozygous for the factor V Arg306 → Gly mutation; none of the patients carried either mutation. Our findings do not support factor V Cambridge and factor V Arg306 → Gly as risk factors for venous thrombosis.

Events with one lepton, one photon, and missing energy are the subject of recent searches at the Fermilab Tevatron. We compute possible contributions to these types of events from the process pp ->gamma l nu(l)nu(tau)nu(tau), where l=e, mu in the context of a low scale technicolor model. We find that with somewhat tighter cuts than the ones used in the CDF search, it could be possible to either confirm or exclude this model in a small region of its parameter space.

Rapidity gaps may provide an adequate signature for electroweak processes at supercolliders, including the production of the Higgs particle. We show how this important issue can be studied in the dijet final states of operating proton-antiproton colliders and present quantitative predictions.

We estimate the attainable limits on the coupling of a nonstandard Higgs boson to two photons taking into account the data collected by the Fermilab collaborations on diphoton events. We based our analysis on a general set of dimension-6 effective operators that give rise to anomalous couplings in the bosonic sector of the standard model. If the coefficients of all blind operators have the same magnitude, indirect bounds on the anomalous triple vector-boson couplings can also be inferred, provided there is no large cancellatton in the Higgs-gamma-gamma coupling.

Spontaneous adverse drug events (ADE) reporting is the main source of data for assessing the risk/benefit of drugs available in the pharmaceutical market. However, its major limitation is underreporting, which hinders and delays the signal detection by Pharmacovigilance (PhV). To identify the techniques of educational intervention (EI) for promotion of PhV by health professionals and to assess their impact. A systematic review was performed in the PUBMED, PAHO, LILACS and EMBASE databases, from November/2011 to January/2012, updated in March/2013. The strategy search included the use of health descriptors and a manual search in the references cited by selected papers. 101 articles were identified, of which 16 met the inclusion criteria. Most of these studies (10) were conducted in European hospitals and physicians were the health professionals subjected to most EI (12), these studies lasted from one month to two years. EI with multifaceted techniques raised the absolute number, the rate of reporting related to adverse drug reactions (ADR), technical defects of health technologies, and also promoted an improvement in the quality of reports, since there was increased reporting of ADR classified as serious, unexpected, related to new drugs and with high degree of causality. Multifaceted educational interventions for multidisciplinary health teams working at all healthcare levels, with sufficient duration to reach all professionals who act in the institution, including issues related to medication errors and therapeutic ineffectiveness, must be validated, with the aim of standardizing the Good Practice of PhV and improve drug safety indicators.

Periodontal disease progress by destructive acute phases intercalated by reparative chronic phases. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and histological evidence of the periodontal disease reparative phase by analyzing bone wall conditions inside periodontal pockets and histologic images of periodontal pockets, identified in relevant publications. 81 patients with periodontitis, were randomly assigned into this study. Clinical and radiographic parameters were established to diagnose periodontal disease providing a sample of 133 diseased areas, which were treated by modified Widman flap. Documentation by digital photography were recorded in the surgery. Relevant publications showing histological images of periodontal pockets, were identified in Medline, PubMed and Google data base, were scanned and digitalized. All images obtained were evaluated and the presences of the reparative evidence in the zone around the underlying destroyed alveolar bone were critically analyzed. All periodontal bone defects, showed cortical bone reparations at different levels inside periodontal bone defects. All histologic images of periodontal pockets identified in relevant publications showed repaired gingival-attached connective tissue localized above underlying destroyed alveolar bone. All the evidences analyzed in this study suggested that periodontal disease is predominantly chronic, quiescent, showing reparative phases in different levels.

Objective This study assessed early manifestations of metabolic syndrome determinants in patients submitted to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods Twenty-seven individuals participated in the study (20 with autologous and 7 with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation). Anthropometric variables and biochemical indicators of lipid and glucose metabolism were determined before and 100 days after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Results The mean total cholesterol (p=0.086), very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (p=0.069) and triglycerides (p=0.086) of all patients did not change significantly between the two study periods, but when the patients were separated by type of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol were close to the critical level of significance for individuals with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (p=0.060) and total cholesterol was significant in individuals with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (p=0.027). Anthropometric variables did not change significantly between before and 100 days after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Conclusion Metabolic syndrome risk factors may be associated with lipid metabolism in the early phase of allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
