Purpose: To examine the use of real-time, generic edge detection, image processing techniques to enhance the television viewing of the visually impaired. Design: Prospective, clinical experimental study. Method: One hundred and two sequential visually impaired (average age 73.8 ± 14.8 years; 59% female) in a single center optimized a dynamic television image with respect to edge detection filter (Prewitt, Sobel, or the two combined), color (red, green, blue, or white), and intensity (one to 15 times) of the overlaid edges. They then rated the original television footage compared with a black-and-white image displaying the edges detected and the original television image with the detected edges overlaid in the chosen color and at the intensity selected. Footage of news, an advertisement, and the end of program credits were subjectively assessed in a random order. Results: A Prewitt filter was preferred (44%) compared with the Sobel filter (27%) or a combination of the two (28%). Green and white were equally popular for displaying the detected edges (32%), with blue (22%) and red (14%) less so. The average preferred edge intensity was 3.5 ± 1.7 times. The image-enhanced television was significantly preferred to the original (P < .001), which in turn was preferred to viewing the detected edges alone (P < .001) for each of the footage clips. Preference was not dependent on the condition causing visual impairment. Seventy percent were definitely willing to buy a set-top box that could achieve these effects for a reasonable price. Conclusions: Simple generic edge detection image enhancement options can be performed on television in real-time and significantly enhance the viewing of the visually impaired. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. IEEE 802.16 standard specifies a contention based bandwidth request scheme for best-effort and non-real time polling services in Point-to-MultiPoint (PMP) architecture. In this letter we propose an analytical model for the scheme and study how the performances of bandwidth efficiency and channel access delay change with the contention window size, the number of contending subscriber stations, the number of slots allocated for bandwidth request and data transmission. Simulations validate its high accuracy. © 2007 IEEE.

We report on the production and characterization of narrow bandwidth fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in two spectral regions using polymer optical fibers (POFs). Narrow bandwidth FBGs are increasingly important for POF transmission systems, WDM technology and sensing applications. Long FBGs with resonance wavelength around 850 nm and 1550 nm were fabricated in several types of polymer optical fibers. The 3 dB FBG bandwidth varies from 0.22 nm down to 0.045 nm considering a Bragg grating length of 10 mm and 25 mm, respectively. © 2013 SPIE.

The production and characterization of narrow bandwidth fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in different spectral regions using polymer optical fibers (POFs) is reported. Narrow bandwidth FBGs are increasingly important for POF transmission systems, WDM technology and sensing applications. Long FBGs with resonance wavelength around 600-nm, 850-nm and 1550-nm in several types of polymer optical fibers were inscribed using a scanning technique with a short optical path. The technique allowed the inscription in relative short periods of time. The obtained 3-dB bandwidth varies from 0.22 down to 0.045 nm considering a Bragg grating length between 10 and 25-mm, respectively. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Aim: To determine the theoretical and clinical minimum image pixel resolution and maximum compression appropriate for anterior eye image storage. Methods: Clinical images of the bulbar conjunctiva, palpebral conjunctiva, and corneal staining were taken at the maximum resolution of Nikon:CoolPix990 (2048 × 1360 pixels), DVC:1312C (1280 × 811), and JAI:CV-S3200 (767 × 569) single chip cameras and the JVC:KYF58 (767 × 569) three chip camera. The images were stored in TIFF format and further copies created with reduced resolution or compressed. The images were then ranked for clarity on a 15 inch monitor (resolution 1280 × 1024) by 20 optometrists and analysed by objective image analysis grading. Theoretical calculation of the resolution necessary to detect the smallest objects of clinical interest was also conducted. Results: Theoretical calculation suggested that the minimum resolution should be ≥579 horizontal pixels at 25 × magnification. Image quality was perceived subjectively as being reduced when the pixel resolution was lower than 767 × 569 (p<0.005) or the image was compressed as a BMP or <50% quality JPEG (p<0.005). Objective image analysis techniques were less susceptible to changes in image quality, particularly when using colour extraction techniques. Conclusion: It is appropriate to store anterior eye images at between 1280 × 811 and 767 × 569 pixel resolution and at up to 1:70 JPEG compression.

We propose and numerically demonstrate a new concept of fibre laser architecture supporting self-similar pulse evolution in the amplifier and nonlinear pulse spectral compression in the passive fibre. The latter process is beneficial for improving the power efficiency as it prevents strong spectral filtering from being highly dissipative. © 2012 OSA.

Distributed source coding (DSC) has recently been considered as an efficient approach to data compression in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Using this coding method multiple sensor nodes compress their correlated observations without inter-node communications. Therefore energy and bandwidth can be efficiently saved. In this paper, we investigate a randombinning based DSC scheme for remote source estimation in WSN and its performance of estimated signal to distortion ratio (SDR). With the introduction of a detailed power consumption model for wireless sensor communications, we quantitatively analyze the overall network energy consumption of the DSC scheme. We further propose a novel energy-aware transmission protocol for the DSC scheme, which flexibly optimizes the DSC performance in terms of either SDR or energy consumption, by adapting the source coding and transmission parameters to the network conditions. Simulations validate the energy efficiency of the proposed adaptive transmission protocol. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a 10 Mb/s error free visible light communications (VLC) system using polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) for the first time. The PLED under test is a blue emitter with ∼600 kHz bandwidth. Having such a low bandwidth means the introduction of an intersymbol interference (ISI) induced penalty at higher transmission speeds and thus the requirement for an equalizer. In this work we improve on previous literature by implementing a decision feedback equalizer, rather than a linear equalizer. Considering 7% and 20% forward error correction codes, transmission speeds up to ∼12 Mb/s can be supported.

In this paper a possibility for quantitative measuring of information security of objects, exposed to information attacks and processed with methods of compression, is represented. A co-efficient of information security, which reflects the influence of the level of compression obtained after applying methods of compression to objects and the time, required by the attack to get access to the corresponding object, is proposed. Methods’ groups with the highest and respectively the lowest values of the co-efficient of information security for all methods’ groups in relation to all attacks’ groups are determined. Assessments and conclusions for future investigations are proposed.

We introduce a general technique how to reveal in experiments of limited electrical bandwidth which is lower than the optical bandwidth of the optical signal under study, whether the statistical properties of the light source obey Gaussian distribution or mode correlations do exist. To do that one needs to perform measurements by decreasing the measurement bandwidth. We develop a simple model of bandwidth-limited measurements and predict universal laws how intensity probability density function and intensity auto-correlation function of ideal completely stochastic source of Gaussian statistics depend on limited measurement bandwidth and measurement noise level. Results of experimental investigation are in good agreement with model predictions. In particular, we reveal partial mode correlations in the radiation of quasi-CW Raman fibre laser.

In this paper a methodology for evaluation of information security of objects under attacks, processed by methods of compression, is represented. Two basic parameters for evaluation of information security of objects – TIME and SIZE – are chosen and the characteristics, which reflect on their evaluation, are analyzed and estimated. A co-efficient of information security of object is proposed as a mean of the coefficients of the parameter TIME and SIZE. From the simulation experiments which were carried out methods with the highest co-efficient of information security had been determined. Assessments and conclusions for future investigations are proposed.
