Stress wave characteristics are drastically altered by joints and other inhomogenities. This paper addresses the effect of an open joint on stress wave transmission. An elastodynamic analysis is developed to supplement and explain some recent observations by Fourney and Dick(1995) on open as well as filled joints. The analytical model developed here assuming spherical symmetry can be extended to filled joints between dissimilar media, but results are presented only for open joints separating identical materials. As a special case, stress wave transmission across a joint with no gap is also addressed.

Rigorous elastic-plastic finite element analysis of joints subjected to cyclic loading is carried out. An incremental-iterative algorithm is developed in a modular form combining elasto-plastic material behaviour and contact stress analysis. For the case of the interference fit, the analysis sequentially carries out insertion of the pin and application of the load on the joint, covering possible initiation of separation (and/or yielding) and progressively the receding/advancing contact at the pin-plate interface. Deformations of both the plate and the pin are considered in the analysis. Numerical examples are presented for the case of an interference fit pin in a large plate under remote cyclic tension, and for an interference fit pin lug joint subjected to cyclic loading. A detailed study is carried out for the latter problem considering the effect of change in contact/separation at the pin-plate interface on local stresses, strains and redistribution of these stresses with the spread of a plastic zone. The results of the study are a useful input for the estimation of the fatigue life of joints. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

We report here on the results of a series of experiments carried out on a turbulent spot in a distorted duct to study the effects of a divergence with straight streamlines preceded by a short stretch of transverse streamline curvature, both in the absence of any pressure gradient. It is found that the distortion produces substantial asymmetry in the spot: the angles at which the spot cuts across the local streamlines are altered dramatically (in contradiction of a hypothesis commonly made in transition zone modelling), and the Tollmien-Schlichting waves that accompany the wing tips of the spot are much stronger on the outside of the bend than on the inside. However there is no strong effect on the internal structure of the spot and the eddies therein, or on such propagation characteristics as overall spread rate and the celerities of the leading and trailing edges. Both lateral streamline curvature and non-homogeneity of the laminar boundary layer into which the spot propagates are shown to be strong factors responsible for the observed asymmetry. It is concluded that these factors produce chiefly a geometric distortion of the coherent structure in the spot, but do not otherwise affect its dynamics in any significant way.

The influence of strain rate and state-of-stress on the formation of ferrite in stainless steel type AISI 304L, 304 and 304 as-cast, during hot working has been studied. Compression and torsion tests were conducted in the temperature range 1100 to 1250 degrees C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s(-1) on these materials, Ferrite formation occurs during deformation at temperatures above 1150 degrees C and strain rates above 10 s(-1), in stainless steel type AISI 304L and 304. The tendency for the formation of ferrite is more in as-cast 304 than in wrought 304, In as-cast 304 the ferrite forms at lower temperatures and strain rates, The tendency for the ferrite formation is more in torsion than in compression.

The present study was undertaken to determine the role of glutathione peroxidase3 (gpx3) in phospholipid protection in cells. Wild-type (WT) cells showed an overall increase in phospholipids upon 50 mu M cadmium (Cd)-treatment, whereas an untreated gpx3 Delta strain showed a drastic reduction in overall phospholipids which was further reduced with 50 mu M Cd. In WT cells, Cd-exposure increased the short chain fatty acids and decreased the unsaturated fatty acids and the magnitude was high in Cd-treated gpx3 Delta cells. Purified recombinant gpx3p showed higher activity with phospholipid hydroperoxides than shorter hydroperoxides. An increase in gpx activity was observed in Cd-treated WT cells and no such alteration was observed in gpx3 Delta. WT cells treated with Cd showed an increase in MDA over untreated, while untreated gpx3 Delta cells themselves showed a higher level of MDA which was further enhanced with Cd-treatment. Iron, zinc and calcium levels were significantly altered in WT and gpx3 Delta cells during Cd-treatment.

New composition gradient solid electrolytes have been designed for application in high temperature solid-state galvanic sensors and in thermodynamic measurements. The functionally gradient electrolyte consists of a solid solution between two or more ionic conductors with a common ion and gradual variation in composition of the other ionic species. Unequal rates of migration of the ions, caused by the presence of the concentration gradient, may result in the development of space charge, manifesting as diffusion potential. Presented is a theoretical analysis of the EMF of cells incorporating gradient solid electrolytes. An analytical expression is derived for diffusion potential, using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, for different types of concentration gradients and boundary conditions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The diffusion potential of an isothermal cell incorporating these gradient electrolytes becomes negligible if there is only one mobile ion and the transport numbers of the relatively immobile polyionic species and electrons approach zero. The analysis of the EMF of a nonisothermal cell incorporating a composition gradient solid electrolyte indicates that the cell EMF can be expressed in terms of the thermodynamic parameters at the electrodes and the Seebeck coefficient of the gradient electrolyte under standard conditions when the transport number of one of the ions approaches unity.

The presence of allophane minerals imparts special engineering features to the volcanic ash soils. This study examines the reasons for the allophanic soils exhibiting unusual shear strength properties in comparison to sedimentary clays. The theories of residual shear strength developed for natural soils and artificial soil mixtures and the unusual surface charge properties of the allophane particle are invoked to explain the high shear strength values of these residual soils. The lack of any reasonable correlation between phi' (effective stress-strength parameter) and plasticity index values for allophanic soils is explained on the basis of the unusual structure of the allophane particle. The reasons as to why natural soil slopes in allophanic soil areas (example, Dominica, West Indies) are stable at much steeper angles than natural slopes in sedimentary clay deposits (London clay areas) are explained in light of the hypothesis developed in this study.

Atomistic simulation of Ag, Al, Au, Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt FCC metallic nanowires show a universal FCC -> HCP phase transformation below a critical cross-sectional size, which is reported for the first time in this paper. The newly observed HCP structure is also confirmed from previous experimental results. Above the critical cross-sectional size, initial < 100 >/{100} FCC metallic nanowires are found to be metastable. External thermal heating shows the transformation of metastable < 100 >/{100} FCC nanowires into < 110 >/{111} stable configuration. Size dependent metastability/instability is also correlated with initial residual stresses of the nanowire by use of molecular static simulation using the conjugant gradient method at a temperature of 0 K. It is found that a smaller cross-sectional dimension of an initial FCC nanowire shows instability due to higher initial residual stresses, and the nanowire is transformed into the novel HCP structure. The initial residual stress shows reduction with an increase in the cross-sectional size of the nanowires. A size dependent critical temperature is also reported for metastable FCC nanowires using molecular dynamic, to capture the < 110 >/{111} to < 100 >/{100} shape memory and pseudoelasticity.

This paper presents a novel hypothesis on the function of massive feedback pathways in mammalian visual systems. We propose that the cortical feature detectors compete not for the right to represent the output at a point, but for exclusive rights to abstract and represent part of the underlying input. Feedback can do this very naturally. A computational model that implements the above idea for the problem of line detection is presented and based on that we suggest a functional role for the thalamo-cortical loop during perception of lines. We show that the model successfully tackles the so called Cross problem. Based on some recent experimental results, we discuss the biological plausibility of our model. We also comment on the relevance of our hypothesis (on the role of feedback) to general sensory information processing and recognition. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Urban lakes form vital ecosystems supporting livelihood with social, economic and aesthetic benefits that are essential for quality life. This depends on the biotic and abiotic components in an ecosystem. The structure of an ecosystem forms a decisive factor in sustaining its functional abilities which include nutrient cycling, oxygen production, etc. A community assemblage of primary producers (algae) plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance as they form the base of energy pyramid in the ecosystem. Algae assimilate carbon in the environment via photosynthetic activities and releases oxygen for the next level of biotic elements in an ecosystem. Besides these, algal cells rich in protein serve as food and feed, used as manure and for production of biofuels. Understanding algal photosynthetic dynamics helps in assessing the level of dissolved oxygen (DO), food (fish, etc.), waste assimilation, etc. Algal chlorophyll content, algal biomass, primary productivity and algal photosynthetic quotient are some of the parameters that help in assessing the status of urban lakes. Chlorophyll content gives a measure of the growth, spread and quantity of algae. Unplanned rapid urbanization in Bangalore in recent times has resulted in either disappearance of lake ecosystems or deteriorated the lake water quality impairing the ecological processes. This paper computes algal growth, community structure, primary productivity and composition for three major lakes (T G Halli, Bellandur and Varthur lakes) under contrast levels of anthropogenic influences.

Radially homogeneous bulk alloys of GaxIn1-xSb in the range 0.7 < x < 0.8, have been grown by vertical Bridgman technique. The factors affecting the interface shape during the growth were optimised to achieve zero convexity. From a series of experiments, a critical ratio of the temperature gradient (G) of the furnace at the melting point of the melt composition to the ampoule lowering speed (v) was deduced for attaining the planarity of the melt-solid interface. The studies carried out on directional solidification of Ga0.77In0.23Sb mixed crystals employing planar melt-solid interface exhibited superior quality than those with nonplanar interfaces. The solutions to certain problems encountered during the synthesis and growth of the compound were discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
