e-learning in the classroom?

As teachers, we are challenged everyday to solve pedagogical problems and we have to fight for our students’ attention in a media rich world. I will talk about how we use ICT in Initial Teacher Training and give you some insight on what we are doing. The most important benefit of using ICT in education is that it makes us reflect on our practice. There is no doubt that our classrooms need to be updated, but we need to be critical about every peace of hardware, software or service that we bring into them. It is not only because our budgets are short, but also because e‐learning is primarily about learning, not technology. Therefore, we need to have the knowledge and skills required to act in different situations, and choose the best tool for the job. Not all subjects are suitable for e‐learning, nor do all students have the skills to organize themselves their own study times. Also not all teachers want to spend time programming or learning about instructional design and metadata. The promised land of easy use of authoring tools (e.g. eXe and Reload) that will lead to all teachers become Learning Objects authors and share these LO in Repositories, all this failed, like previously HyperCard, Toolbook and others. We need to know a little bit of many different technologies so we can mobilize this knowledge when a situation requires it: integrate e‐learning technologies in the classroom, not a flipped classroom, just simple tools. Lecture capture, mobile phones and smartphones, pocket size camcorders, VoIP, VLE, live video broadcast, screen sharing, free services for collaborative work, save, share and sync your files. Do not feel stressed to use everything, every time. Just because we have a whiteboard does not mean we have to make it the centre of the classroom. Start from where you are, with your preferred subject and the tools you master. Them go slowly and try some new tool in a non‐formal situation and with just one or two students. And you don’t need to be alone: subscribe a mailing list and share your thoughts with other teachers in a dedicated forum, even better if both are part of a community of practice, and share resources. We did that for music teachers and it was a success, in two years arriving at 1.000 members. Just do it.

Performance management in health centres: evidence from a field study

There has been a growing interest in research on performance measurement and management practices, which seems to reflect researchers’ response to calls for the need to increase the relevance of management accounting research. However, despite the development of the new public management literature, studies involving public sector organizations are relatively small compared to those involving business organizations and extremely limited when it comes to public primary health care organizations. Yet, the economic significance of public health care organizations in the economy of developed countries and the criticisms these organizations regularly face from the public suggests there is a need for research. This is particularly true in the case of research that may lead to improvement in performance measurement and management practices and ultimately to improvements in the way health care organizations use their limited resources in the provision of services to the communities. This study reports on a field study involving three public primary health care organisations. The evidence obtained from interviews and archival data suggests a performance management practices in these institutions lacked consistency and coherence, potentially leading to decreased performance. Hierarchical controls seemed to be very weak and accountability limited, leading to a lack of direction, low motivation and, in some circumstances to insufficient managerial abilities and skills. Also, the performance management systems revealed a number of weaknesses, which suggests that there are various opportunities for improvement in performance in the studied organisations.

La social stock exchange au Portugal: un nouvel allié de l'économie sociale

Résumé Cet article vise à contribuer à la connaissance de la Bolsa de Valores Sociais (BVS) — Social Stock Exchange — récemment créé au Portugal, dont le but primatial était de permettre la prise de moyens de financement des entités de l'Économie Sociale engagées dans des projets d'éducation et d'entreprenariat. Il se penchera sur la qualification juridique des divers types d'entités cotées dans la BVS, sur le concept d'investisseur social et sur la protection dont il jouira, vis-à-vis des exigences de transparence et de gouvernance qui incombent à ces entités. Le thème proposé sera examiné en soulignant les virtualités et le potentiel de la BVS, faisant référence à l'un ou à l'autre sujet qui viennent à effet, avec un accent particulier sur l'avantage d'élaborer un code de gouvernance corporative pour les entités de l'Économie Sociale. Abstract This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Bolsa de Valores Sociais (BVS) — Social Stock Exchange — recently created in Portugal, whose primatial purpose was to allow the taking of means of financing the Social Economy entities, engaged in projects in education and entrepreneurship. It will reflect on the legal classification of the various types of entities rated in the BVS, on the concept of social investor and on the protection he will enjoy, leading to the consequent demands for transparency and governance that falls upon those entities. The proposed theme will be discussed highlighting the virtues and potential of BVS, playing in one or two topics that comes to purpose, with particular emphasis on the relevance of drawing up a code of corporate governance for entities of the Social Economy. Resumen Este artículo tiene como objetivo contribuir al conocimiento de la Bolsa de Valores Sociales (BVS), recientemente creada en Portugal, cuya finalidad principal es que las entidades de la economía social dedicadas a proyectos en las áreas de educación y de iniciativa empresarial puedan obtener medios financieros. Se abordará la calificación jurídica de los diversos tipos de entidades que cotizan en la BVS, así como el concepto de inversor social y la protección de que éste goza, con las consiguientes exigencias en materia de transparencia y de gobierno que recaen sobre esas entidades. Se analizará la temática propuesta destacando las virtudes y potencialidades de la BVS, sin omitir algún otro tópico adyacente que resulte relevante, en especial la conveniencia de que sea elaborado un código de gobernanza corporativa para las entidades de la economía social.

A bolsa de valores sociais enquanto agente de renovação da economia social

Este artigo visa contribuir para o conhecimento da Bolsa de Valores Sociais (BVS), recentemente criada em Portugal, cuja finalidade foi, primacialmente, a de permitir a obtenção de meios de financiamento às entidades da Economia Social que se dediquem a projectos nas áreas da educação e do empreendedorismo. Reflectir-se-á sobre a qualificação jurídica dos vários tipos de entidades cotadas na BVS, sobre o conceito de investidor social e a protecção de que este beneficia, com as consequentes exigências em matéria de transparência e de governação que recaem sobre aquelas entidades. A temática proposta será percorrida destacando as virtudes e potencialidades da BVS, tocando num ou noutro tópico adjacente que venha a propósito, com particular destaque para a pertinência da elaboração de um código de governança corporativa para as entidades da economia social.

Digital radiography detectors: a technical overview

Developments in digital detector technologies have been taking place and new digital technologies are available for clinical practice. This chapter is intended to give a technical state-of-the-art overview about computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR) detectors. CR systems use storage-phosphor image plates with a separate image readout process and DR technology converts X-rays into electrical charges by means of a readout process using TFT arrays. Digital detectors offer several advantages when compared to analogue detectors. The knowledge about digital detector technology for use in plain radiograph examinations is thus a fundamental topic to be acquired by radiology professionals and students. In this chapter an overview of digital radiography systems (both CR and DR) currently available for clinical practice is provided.

Capacidade de modificar parâmetros espaço-temporais do ciclo da marcha após modificação de componentes intrínsecas ao membro inferior em indivíduos com sequelas de acidente vascular encefálico - intervenção na reeducação da marcha em treadmill

Objectivo: A realização deste estudo tem como objectivo identificar a capacidade de modificação dos parâmetros do ciclo da marcha após intervenção a nível dos componentes do membro inferior e uma abordagem na reeducação da marcha no tapete rolante (treadmill). Métodos: Este estudo é um estudo de série de casos, constituído por três indivíduos com sequelas de Acidente Vascular Encefálico (AVE), com comprometimento a nível do membro inferior, capazes de realizar marcha. Os instrumentos de avaliação foram o teste de marcha de 10 metros (10-M), o teste de marcha de 6 minutos (6-Min) e o Time Up and Go (TUG). Os indivíduos receberam intervenção da fisioterapia baseada no conceito de Bobath e na reeducação de marcha no treadmill. Resultados: Após a intervenção verificou-se um aumento da velocidade e cadência da marcha, assim como uma maior tolerância e resistência na capacidade da sua realização. Conclusão: A intervenção realizada a nível dos componentes do membro inferior e na reeducação da marcha utilizando o treadmill permitiu modificar alguns parâmetros espaço-temporais do ciclo da marcha, aumentando a velocidade e cadência da marcha. A utilização conjunta de diferentes abordagens na intervenção ao indivíduo com sequelas de AVE deve ser sempre considerada uma vez que pode trazer benefícios na sua independência e qualidade de vida.

António Ferro:o traje e a moda

António Ferro foi uma personalidade fulcral para a cultura do século XX em Portugal, sendo as suas obras reflexo do tempo que viveu e das ideias que defendeu, estando quer estas, quer as de sua mulher, Fernanda de Castro, recheadas de referências à indumentária e as modas que se iam sucedendo e que muitas vezes descreveu. ABSTRACT - António Ferro was a main personality of the cultural scene of the twentieth century in Portugal. His works reflect the time he lived and ideas that defended, being either it, or those written by his wife, Fernanda de Castro, filled with references to clothing and the fashions that were succeeding and that he often described.

Ageing effects on the wettability behavior of laser textured silicon

In the present work we investigate the ageing of acid cleaned femtosecond laser textured < 100 > silicon surfaces. Changes in the surface structure and chemistry were analysed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in order to explain the variation with time of the water contact angles of the laser textured surfaces. It is shown that highly hydrophobic silicon surfaces are obtained immediately after laser texturing and cleaning with acid solutions (water contact angle >120 degrees). However these surfaces are not stable and ageing leads to a decrease of the water contact angle which reaches a value of 80 degrees. XPS analysis of the surfaces shows that the growth of the native oxide layer is most probably responsible for this behavior. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mantle source heterogeneity, magma generation and magmatic evolution at Terceira Island (Azoresarchipelago): Constraints from elemental and isotopic (Sr, Nd, Hf, and Pb) data

This work addresses the present-day (<100 ka) mantle heterogeneity in the Azores region through the study of two active volcanic systems from Terceira Island. Our study shows that mantle heterogeneities are detectable even when "coeval" volcanic systems (Santa Barbara and Fissural) erupted less than 10 km away. These volcanic systems, respectively, reflect the influence of the Terceira and D. Joao de Castro Bank end-members defined by Beier et at (2008) for the Terceira Rift Santa Barbara magmas are interpreted to be the result of mixing between a HIMU-type component, carried to the upper mantle by the Azores plume, and the regional depleted MORB magmas/source. Fissural lavas are characterized by higher Ba/Nb and Nb/U ratios and less radiogenic Pb-206/Pb-204, Nd-143/Nd-144 and Hf-176/Hf-177, requiring the small contribution of delaminated sub-continental lithospheric mantle residing in the upper mantle. Published noble gas data on lavas from both volcanic systems also indicate the presence of a relatively undegassed component, which is interpreted as inherited from a lower mantle reservoir sampled by the ascending Azores plume. As inferred from trace and major elements, melting began in the garnet stability field, while magma extraction occurred within the spinel zone. The intra-volcanic system's chemical heterogeneity is mainly explained by variable proportions of the above-mentioned local end-members and by crystal fractionation processes. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. RESUMO: Eça de Queiroz foi uma personalidade impar da literatura portuguesa, sendo as suas obras reflexo do tempo que viveu e da sociedade em que se integrou, verificando-se que estas, estão recheadas de referências à indumentária e às modas que se iam sucedendo e que muitas vezes descreveu. Dos indícios documentais biográficos, releva uma relação com a indumentária pessoal muito atenta e cuidada quase podendo ser considerado um dandy.
