The productivity, quality and cost efficiency of welding work are critical for metal industry today. Welding processes must get more effective and this can be done by mechanization and automation. Those systems are always expensive and they have to pay the investment back. In this case it is really important to optimize the needed intelligence and this way needed automation level, so that a company will get the best profit. This intelligence and automation level was earlier classified in several different ways which are not useful for optimizing the process of automation or mechanization of welding. In this study the intelligence of a welding system is defined in a new way to enable the welding system to produce a weld good enough. In this study a new way is developed to classify and select the internal intelligence level of a welding system needed to produce the weld efficiently. This classification contains the possible need of human work and its effect to the weld and its quality but does not exclude any different welding processes or methods. In this study a totally new way is developed to calculate the best optimization for the needed intelligence level in welding. The target of this optimization is the best possible productivity and quality and still an economically optimized solution for several different cases. This new optimizing method is based on grounds of product type, economical productivity, the batch size of products, quality and criteria of usage. Intelligence classification and optimization were never earlier made by grounds of a made product. Now it is possible to find the best type of welding system needed to welddifferent types of products. This calculation process is a universal way for optimizing needed automation or mechanization level when improving productivity of welding. This study helps the industry to improve productivity, quality and cost efficiency of welding workshops.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää The Switch Drive Systems Oy:n tuotteiden kokoonpantavuuden parantamisen mahdollisuuksia sekä toimia yrityksen kokoonpantavuuteen liittyvien toimintamallien kehittämisen perustana. The uncertainty of any analytical determination depends on analysis and sampling. Uncertainty arising from sampling is usually not controlled and methods for its evaluation are still little known. Pierre Gy’s sampling theory is currently the most complete theory about samplingwhich also takes the design of the sampling equipment into account. Guides dealing with the practical issues of sampling also exist, published by international organizations such as EURACHEM, IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization). In this work Gy’s sampling theory was applied to several cases, including the analysis of chromite concentration estimated on SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images and estimation of the total uncertainty of a drug dissolution procedure. The results clearly show that Gy’s sampling theory can be utilized in both of the above-mentioned cases and that the uncertainties achieved are reliable. Variographic experiments introduced in Gy’s sampling theory are beneficially applied in analyzing the uncertainty of auto-correlated data sets such as industrial process data and environmental discharges. The periodic behaviour of these kinds of processes can be observed by variographic analysis as well as with fast Fourier transformation and auto-correlation functions. With variographic analysis, the uncertainties are estimated as a function of the sampling interval. This is advantageous when environmental data or process data are analyzed as it can be easily estimated how the sampling interval is affecting the overall uncertainty. If the sampling frequency is too high, unnecessary resources will be used. On the other hand, if a frequency is too low, the uncertainty of the determination may be unacceptably high. Variographic methods can also be utilized to estimate the uncertainty of spectral data produced by modern instruments. Since spectral data are multivariate, methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are needed when the data are analyzed. Optimization of a sampling plan increases the reliability of the analytical process which might at the end have beneficial effects on the economics of chemical analysis,

Because of technical principles, samples to be observed with electron microscopy need to be fixed in a chemical process and exposed to vacuum conditions that can produce some changes in the morphology of the specimen. The aim of this work was to obtain high-resolution images of the fresh articular cartilage surface with an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), which is an instrument that permits examination of biological specimens without fixation methods in a 10 Torr chamber pressure, thus minimizing the risk of creating artifacts in the structure. Samples from weight-bearing areas of femoral condyles of New Zealand white rabbits were collected and photographed using an ESEM. Images were analyzed using a categorization based in the Jurvelin classification system modified by Hong and Henderson. Appearance of the observed elevations and depressions as described in the classification were observed, but no fractures or splits of cartilage surface, thought to be artifacts, were detected. The ESEM is a useful tool to obtain images of fresh articular cartilage surface appearance without either employing fixation methods or exposing the specimen to extreme vacuum conditions, reducing the risk of introducing artifacts within the specimen. For all these reasons it could become a useful tool for quality control of the preservation process of osteochondral allografting in a bank of musculoskeletal tissues.

In the petroleum refining industry, the use of crude from several origins is frequent. This leads to a product of variable chemical composition during refining, hindering quality control. Therefore, it is important to develop classification models that help to better characterize those products. The objective of this study is to develop a SIMCA recognition pattern to classify kerosene using infrared spectroscopy data. The model permits to differentiate two kerosene groups with different chemical compositions, which was corroborated by mass spectrometry.

Eight trace elements were determined in 20 Brazilian brands of grape juice, distributed over the country. Highest measured concentrations (As: 0.016; Cd: 0.010; Cr: 0.060; Cu: 1.28; Ni: 0.032; Pb: 0.016; Sb: 0.0040 and Zn: 1.44 mg L-1) comply with Brazilian maximal tolerance levels for inorganic contaminants (As: 0.5; Cd: 0.5; Cr: 0.1; Cu: 30; Ni: 3; Pb: 0.4; Sb: 1 and Zn: 25 mg L-1). Determination of arsenic species has shown inorganic As(V) as predominant in most samples. Sodium concentrations, nowadays a major public health concern, were also measured, showing an average of 149 mg L-1. Analytical results for this element were much higher than label concentrations, showing the need for better quality control.

Thirty three honey samples produced by four Melipona species from different areas of the State of Bahia, were analyzed with the aim to determine their physico-chemical characteristics, contributing to the establishment of standards for quality control. The majority of the average values for physico-chemical parameters fulfilled the quality criteria established by the Brazilian and international Legislations for Apis honey, except for moisture content, which afforded higher values. Concerning the high number of samples wich did not fit the limits for reducing sugars, it is necessary to define minimum values in order to characterize Melipona honeys, as well as criteria for use of diastasic activity.

Intralaboratorial and interlaboratorial variabilities can be obtained by conducting an specially designed interlaboratory program. Using the analysis of variance technique one can calculate the r (repeatability) and R (reproducibility) indexes that can help participant laboratories to monitor their routine quality control procedures. An example is described using data obtained from an interlaboratory program where twelve laboratories determined total iron content in silicon metal sample by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

A gas chromatographic method has been developed for the assay of fluvastatin sodium (FLU). FLU was silylated with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide-1% trimethylchlorosilane at 90 ºC for 30 min and analysed in a DB-1 column by capillary gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector. The method was validated. The assay was linear over the concentration range at 10.0 to 50.0 µg mL-1. The limit of detection and the limit of quantitation were 1.0 and 3.0 µg mL-1, respectively. The recoveries of FLU derivatives were in the range of 99.25-99.80%. In inter-day and intra-day analysis, the values of relative standard deviation (%) and the relative mean error (%) were found between 0.20-0.80% and -0.20-0.75%, respectively. The developed method was succesfully applied to analyze the FLU content in tablet formulation. The results were statistically compared with those obtained by the official method, and no significant difference was found between the two methods. Therefore, it can be recommended for the quality control assay of FLU in pharmaceutical industry.
