Non-linear effects are responsible for peculiar phenomena in charged particles dynamics in circular accelerators. Recently, they have been used to propose novel beam manipulations where one can modify the transverse beam distribution in a controlled way, to fulfil the constraints posed by new applications. One example is the resonant beam splitting used at CERN for the Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE), to transfer proton beams from PS to SPS. The theoretical description of these effects relies on the formulation of the particle's dynamics in terms of Hamiltonian systems and symplectic maps, and on the theory of adiabatic invariance and resonant separatrix crossing. Close to resonance, new stable regions and new separatrices appear in the phase space. As non-linear effects do not preserve the Courant-Snyder invariant, it is possible for a particle to cross a separatrix, changing the value of its adiabatic invariant. This process opens the path to new beam manipulations. This thesis deals with various possible effects that can be used to shape the transverse beam dynamics, using 2D and 4D models of particles' motion. We show the possibility of splitting a beam using a resonant external exciter, or combining its action with MTE-like tune modulation close to resonance. Non-linear effects can also be used to cool a beam acting on its transverse beam distribution. We discuss the case of an annular beam distribution, showing that emittance can be reduced modulating amplitude and frequency of a resonant oscillating dipole. We then consider 4D models where, close to resonance, motion in the two transverse planes is coupled. This is exploited to operate on the transverse emittances with a 2D resonance crossing. Depending on the resonance, the result is an emittance exchange between the two planes, or an emittance sharing. These phenomena are described and understood in terms of adiabatic invariance theory.

Smart Farming Technologies (SFT) is a term used to define the set of digital technologies able not only to control and manage the farm system, but also to connect it to the many disruptive digital applications posed at multiple links along the value chain. The adoption of SFT has been so far limited, with significant differences at country-levels and among different types of farms and farmers. The objective of this thesis is to analyze what factors contributes to shape the agricultural digital transition and to assess its potential impacts in the Italian agri-food system. Specifically, this overall research objective is approached under three different perspectives. Firstly, we carry out a review of the literature that focuses on the determinants of adoption of farm-level Management Information Systems (MIS), namely the most adopted smart farming solutions in Italy. Secondly, we run an empirical analysis on what factors are currently shaping the adoption of SFT in Italy. In doing so, we focus on the multi-process and multi-faceted aspects of the adoption, by overcoming the one-off binary approach often used to study adoption decisions. Finally, we adopt a forward-looking perspective to investigate what the socio-ethical implications of a diffused use of SFT might be. On the one hand, our results indicate that bigger, more structured farms with higher levels of commercial integration along the agri-food supply chain are those more likely to be early adopters. On the other hand, they highlight the need for the institutional and organizational environment around farms to more effectively support farmers in the digital transition. Moreover, the role of several other actors and actions are discussed and analyzed, by highlighting the key role of specific agri-food stakeholders and ad-hoc policies, with the aim to propose a clearer path towards an efficient, fair and inclusive digitalization of the agrifood sector.

Understanding the natural and forced variability of the atmospheric general circulation and its drivers is one of the grand challenges in climate science. It is of paramount importance to understand to what extent the systematic error of climate models affects the processes driving such variability. This is done by performing a set of simulations (ROCK experiments) with an intermediate complexity atmospheric model (SPEEDY), in which the Rocky Mountains orography is increased or decreased to influence the structure of the North Pacific jet stream. For each of these modified-orography experiments, the climatic response to idealized sea surface temperature anomalies of varying intensity in the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) region is studied. ROCK experiments are characterized by variations in the Pacific jet stream intensity whose extension encompasses the spread of the systematic error found in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models. When forced with ENSO-like idealised anomalies, they exhibit a non-negligible sensitivity in the response pattern over the Pacific North American region, indicating that the model mean state can affect the model response to ENSO. It is found that the classical Rossby wave train response to ENSO is more meridionally oriented when the Pacific jet stream is weaker and more zonally oriented with a stronger jet. Rossby wave linear theory suggests that a stronger jet implies a stronger waveguide, which traps Rossby waves at a lower latitude, favouring a zonal propagation of Rossby waves. The shape of the dynamical response to ENSO affects the ENSO impacts on surface temperature and precipitation over Central and North America. A comparison of the SPEEDY results with CMIP6 models suggests a wider applicability of the results to more resources-demanding climate general circulation models (GCMs), opening up to future works focusing on the relationship between Pacific jet misrepresentation and response to external forcing in fully-fledged GCMs.

Understanding how Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) shape galaxy evolution is a key challenge of modern astronomy. In the framework where black hole (BH) and galaxy growth are linked, AGN feedback must be tackled both at its “causes” (e.g. AGN-driven winds) and its “effects” (alteration of the gas reservoir in AGN hosts). The most informative cosmic time is z~1-3, at the peak of AGN activity and galaxy buildup, the so-called cosmic noon. The aim of this thesis is to provide new insights regarding some key questions that still remain open in this research field: i) What are the properties of AGN-driven sub-pc scale winds at z>1? ii) Are AGN-driven winds effective in influencing the life of galaxies? iii) Do AGN impact directly on star formation (SF) and gas content of their hosts? I first address AGN feedback as “caught in the act” by studying ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), X-ray AGN-driven winds, in gravitationally lensed quasars. I build the first statistically robust sample of high-z AGN, not preselected based on AGN-driven winds. I derive a first estimate of the high-z UFO detection fraction and measure the UFO duty cycle of a single high-z quasar for the first time. I also address the “effects” of AGN feedback on the life of host galaxies. If AGN influence galaxy growth, then they will reasonably impact the molecular gas reservoir first, and SF as a consequence. Through a comparative study of the molecular gas content in cosmic-noon AGN hosts and matched non-active galaxies (i.e., galaxies not hosting an AGN), we find that the host galaxies of more regular AGN (not selected to be the most luminous) are generally similar to non-active galaxies. However, we report on the possibility of a luminosity effect regulating the efficiency by which AGN might impact on galaxy growth.

L’incidenza di patologie cardiovascolari come ipertensione e aterosclerosi è in progressivo aumento nel mondo, sia a causa del maggiore sviluppo di fattori di rischio quali obesità, sedentarietà e diabete, dovuti al tenore di vita che caratterizza la popolazione, specialmente quella risiedente in paesi sviluppati e con un alto tenore di vita, sia a causa dell’aumento dell’aspettativa di vita. Sembra quindi possibile considerare la complianza arteriosa totale e, in particolare, la complianza del primo tratto di aorta come un importante indice per la prevenzione e la valutazione del rischio della patologia arteriosa. La valutazione di questo parametro è però difficile da effettuare in vivo, motivo per cui diversi metodi sono stati sviluppati, alcuni basati sul modello Windkessel a due elementi, modello della circolazione sistemica proposto per la prima volta da Otto Frank nel 1899, altri su quello a tre. I primi risultano più accurati dei secondi. Tra i metodi di stima della complianza arteriosa totale ve ne è uno, il Pulse Pressure Method (PPM), ovvero metodo della pressione differenziale che, introdotto per la prima volta da Stergiopulos nel 1994, si è dimostrato essere tanto semplice quanto accurato. Questo consiste nel trovare il miglior valore di complianza che minimizzi, dopo opportune iterazioni, l’errore tra la pressione differenziale misurata, e quella calcolata in uscita da un modello Windkessel a due elementi. I vantaggi nell’uso di questo metodo non sono pochi: esso infatti non richiede flusso nullo in aorta ed è perciò applicabile in qualsiasi punto dell’albero arterioso, fornisce il valore della complianza alla pressione media Pm e necessita della sola conoscenza della pressione differenziale aortica e del flusso aortico, ottenibili non invasivamente. Studiando i risultati ottenuti, infine, si è visto come l’aorta prossimale, ovvero il tratto di aorta ascendente e l’arco aortico, sia il principale determinante della complianza arteriosa totale.

The hadrontherapy exploits beams of charged particles against deep cancers. These ions have a depth-dose profile in which there is a little release of energy at the beginning of their path, whereas there is a sharp maximum, the Bragg Peak, near its end path. However, if heavy ions are used, the fragmentation of the projectile can happen and the fragments can release some dose outside the treatment volume beyond the Bragg peak. The fragmentation process takes place also when the Galactic Cosmic Rays at high energy hit the spaceship during space missions. In both cases some neutrons can be produced and if they interact with the absorbing materials nuclei some secondary particles are generated which can release energy. For this reason, studies about the cross section measurements of the fragments generated during the collisions of heavy ions against the tissues nuclei are very important. In this context, the FragmentatiOn Of Target (FOOT) experiment was born, and aims at measuring the differential and double differential fragmentation cross sections for different kinetic energies relevant to hadrontherapy and space radioprotection with high accuracy. Since during fragmentation processes also neutrons are produced, tests of a neutron detection system are ongoing. In particular, recently a neutron detector made up of a liquid organic scintillator, BC-501A with neutrons/gammas discrimination capability was studied, and it represents the core of this thesis. More in details, an analysis of the data collected at the GSI laboratory, in Darmstadt, Germany, is effectuated which consists in discriminating neutral and charged particles and then to separate neutrons from gammas. From this analysis, a preliminary energy-differential reaction cross-section for the production of neutrons in the 16O + (C_2H_4)_(n) and 16O + C reactions was estimated.

Mine drainage is an important environmental disturbance that affects the chemical and biological components in natural resources. However, little is known about the effects of neutral mine drainage on the soil bacteria community. Here, a high-throughput 16S rDNA pyrosequencing approach was used to evaluate differences in composition, structure, and diversity of bacteria communities in samples from a neutral drainage channel, and soil next to the channel, at the Sossego copper mine in Brazil. Advanced statistical analyses were used to explore the relationships between the biological and chemical data. The results showed that the neutral mine drainage caused changes in the composition and structure of the microbial community, but not in its diversity. The Deinococcus/Thermus phylum, especially the Meiothermus genus, was in large part responsible for the differences between the communities, and was positively associated with the presence of copper and other heavy metals in the environmental samples. Other important parameters that influenced the bacterial diversity and composition were the elements potassium, sodium, nickel, and zinc, as well as pH. The findings contribute to the understanding of bacterial diversity in soils impacted by neutral mine drainage, and demonstrate that heavy metals play an important role in shaping the microbial population in mine environments.

The present paper describes a novel, simple and reliable differential pulse voltammetric method for determining amitriptyline (AMT) in pharmaceutical formulations. It has been described for many authors that this antidepressant is electrochemically inactive at carbon electrodes. However, the procedure proposed herein consisted in electrochemically oxidizing AMT at an unmodified carbon nanotube paste electrode in the presence of 0.1 mol L(-1) sulfuric acid used as electrolyte. At such concentration, the acid facilitated the AMT electroxidation through one-electron transfer at 1.33 V vs. Ag/AgCl, as observed by the augmentation of peak current. Concerning optimized conditions (modulation time 5 ms, scan rate 90 mV s(-1), and pulse amplitude 120 mV) a linear calibration curve was constructed in the range of 0.0-30.0 μmol L(-1), with a correlation coefficient of 0.9991 and a limit of detection of 1.61 μmol L(-1). The procedure was successfully validated for intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy. Moreover, its feasibility was assessed through analysis of commercial pharmaceutical formulations and it has been compared to the UV-vis spectrophotometric method used as standard analytical technique recommended by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia.

Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) functions both in regulation of insulin secretion and neurotransmitter release through common downstream mediators. Therefore, we hypothesized that pancreatic ß-cells acquire and store the information contained in calcium pulses as a form of metabolic memory, just as neurons store cognitive information. To test this hypothesis, we developed a novel paradigm of pulsed exposure of ß-cells to intervals of high glucose, followed by a 24-h consolidation period to eliminate any acute metabolic effects. Strikingly, ß-cells exposed to this high-glucose pulse paradigm exhibited significantly stronger insulin secretion. This metabolic memory was entirely dependent on CaMKII. Metabolic memory was reflected on the protein level by increased expression of proteins involved in glucose sensing and Ca(2+)-dependent vesicle secretion, and by elevated levels of the key ß-cell transcription factor MAFA. In summary, like neurons, human and mouse ß-cells are able to acquire and retrieve information.

Resistant hypertension (RHTN) includes patients with controlled blood pressure (BP) (CRHTN) and uncontrolled BP (UCRHTN). In fact, RHTN patients are more likely to have target organ damage (TOD), and resistin, leptin and adiponectin may affect BP control in these subjects. We assessed the relationship between adipokines levels and arterial stiffness, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and microalbuminuria (MA). This cross-sectional study included CRHTN (n=51) and UCRHTN (n=38) patients for evaluating body mass index, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, plasma adiponectin, leptin and resistin concentrations, pulse wave velocity (PWV), MA and echocardiography. Leptin and resistin levels were higher in UCRHTN, whereas adiponectin levels were lower in this same subgroup. Similarly, arterial stiffness, LVH and MA were higher in UCRHTN subgroup. Adiponectin levels negatively correlated with PWV (r=-0.42, P<0.01), and MA (r=-0.48, P<0.01) only in UCRHTN. Leptin was positively correlated with PWV (r=0.37, P=0.02) in UCRHTN subgroup, whereas resistin was not correlated with TOD in both subgroups. Adiponectin is associated with arterial stiffness and renal injury in UCRHTN patients, whereas leptin is associated with arterial stiffness in the same subgroup. Taken together, our results showed that those adipokines may contribute to vascular and renal damage in UCRHTN patients.

Biogeography and metacommunity ecology provide two different perspectives on species diversity. Both are spatial in nature but their spatial scales do not necessarily match. With recent boom of metacommunity studies, we see an increasing need for clear discrimination of spatial scales relevant for both perspectives. This discrimination is a necessary prerequisite for improved understanding of ecological phenomena across scales. Here we provide a case study to illustrate some spatial scale-dependent concepts in recent metacommunity studies and identify potential pitfalls. We presented here the diversity patterns of Neotropical lepidopterans and spiders viewed both from metacommunity and biogeographical perspectives. Specifically, we investigated how the relative importance of niche- and dispersal-based processes for community assembly change at two spatial scales: metacommunity scale, i.e. within a locality, and biogeographical scale, i.e. among localities widely scattered along a macroclimatic gradient. As expected, niche-based processes dominated the community assembly at metacommunity scale, while dispersal-based processes played a major role at biogeographical scale for both taxonomical groups. However, we also observed small but significant spatial effects at metacommunity scale and environmental effects at biogeographical scale. We also observed differences in diversity patterns between the two taxonomical groups corresponding to differences in their dispersal modes. Our results thus support the idea of continuity of processes interactively shaping diversity patterns across scales and emphasize the necessity of integration of metacommunity and biogeographical perspectives.

Increased levels of inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), 10 (IL-10), 1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) are associated with arterial stiffness in hypertension. Indeed, resistant hypertension (RHTN) leads to unfavorable prognosis attributed to poor blood pressure (BP) control and target organ damage. This study evaluated the potential impact of inflammatory biomarkers on arterial stiffness in RHTN. In this cross-sectional study, 32 RHTN, 20 mild hypertensive (HTN) and 20 normotensive (NT) patients were subjected to office BP and arterial stiffness measurements assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV). Inflammatory biomarkers were measured in plasma samples. PWV was increased in RHTN compared with HTN and NT (p < 0.05). TNF-α levels were significantly higher in RHTN and HTN than NT patients. No differences in IL-6 levels were observed. RHTN patients had a higher frequency of subjects with increased levels of IL-10 and IL-1β compared with HTN and NT patients. Finally, IL-1β was independently associated with PWV (p < 0.001; R(2) = 0.5; β = 0.077). RHTN subjects have higher levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-10) as well as increased arterial stiffness, and detectable IL-1β levels are associated arterial stiffness. These findings suggest that inflammation plays a possible role in the pathophysiology of RHTN.

Mechanically evoked reflexes have been postulated to be less sensitive to presynaptic inhibition (PSI) than the H-reflex. This has implications on investigations of spinal cord neurophysiology that are based on the T-reflex. Preceding studies have shown an enhanced effect of PSI on the H-reflex when a train of ~10 conditioning stimuli at 1 Hz was applied to the nerve of the antagonist muscle. The main questions to be addressed in the present study are if indeed T-reflexes are less sensitive to PSI and whether (and to what extent and by what possible mechanisms) the effect of low frequency conditioning, found previously for the H-reflex, can be reproduced on T-reflexes from the soleus muscle. We explored two different conditioning-to-test (C-T) intervals: 15 and 100 ms (corresponding to D1 and D2 inhibitions, respectively). Test stimuli consisted of either electrical pulses applied to the posterior tibial nerve to elicit H-reflexes or mechanical percussion to the Achilles tendon to elicit T-reflexes. The 1 Hz train of conditioning electrical stimuli delivered to the common peroneal nerve induced a stronger effect of PSI as compared to a single conditioning pulse, for both reflexes (T and H), regardless of C-T-intervals. Moreover, the conditioning train of pulses (with respect to a single conditioning pulse) was proportionally more effective for T-reflexes as compared to H-reflexes (irrespective of the C-T interval), which might be associated with the differential contingent of Ia afferents activated by mechanical and electrical test stimuli. A conceivable explanation for the enhanced PSI effect in response to a train of stimuli is the occurrence of homosynaptic depression at synapses on inhibitory interneurons interposed within the PSI pathway. The present results add to the discussion of the sensitivity of the stretch reflex pathway to PSI and its functional role.

This article is divided into two parts. The first presents two abstract arguments that constitute the starting point for the development of the second part, which is directed towards discussing some aspects of the distance learning policies, i.e., the role of public authorities in encouraging and shaping this type of education. First of all, it is intended to establish some assumptions to understand the emergence of this phenomenon and some of its conditioning factors and consequences; then to suggest some analytical tools to allow us to reflect on public policy in this area.

Rice husk, employed as an energy source at milling industries in Brazil generates, after burning, a dark ash. This residue is not yet conveniently disposed, being currently dumped on large areas, causing environmental problems. This research intended to evaluate the applications of residual rice husk ashes (RHA) as a partial replacement of cement for mortar production. Rice husk ash was chemically characterized through X-ray fluorescence, determination of carbon content, X-ray diffraction, and laser granulometric analysis. Mortar specimens were submitted to two different exposure conditions: internal and external environments at a maximum period of five months. Physical-mechanical testing were compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). Although presenting good mechanical performance, the mortar based on ash (RHA) did not present pozolanicity but it can be employed in cement matrices as inert material (filler).
