The viability of carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites in cement matrices as a self-heating material is reported in this paper. This functional application would allow the use of CNF cement composites as a heating element in buildings, or for deicing pavements of civil engineering transport infrastructures, such as highways or airport runways. Cement pastes with the addition of different CNF dosages (from 0 to 5% by cement mass) have been prepared. Afterwards, tests were run at different fixed voltages (50, 100 and 150V), and the temperature of the specimens was registered. Also the possibility of using a casting method like shotcrete, instead of just pouring the fresh mix into the mild (with no system’s efficiency loss expected) was studied. Temperatures up to 138 °C were registered during shotcrete-5% CNF cement paste tests (showing initial 10 °C/min heating rates). However a minimum voltage was required in order to achieve a proper system functioning.

This paper aims to study the feasibility of highly conductive carbon fiber reinforced concrete (CFRC) as a self-heating material for ice formation prevention and curing in pavements. Tests were carried out in lab ambient conditions at different fixed voltages and then introduced in a freezer at −15 °C. The specimens inside the freezer were exposed to different fixed voltages when reaching +5 °C for prevention of icing and when reaching the temperature inside the freezer, i.e., −15 °C, for curing of icing. Results show that this concrete could act as a heating element in pavements with risk of ice formation, consuming a reasonable amount of energy for both anti-icing (prevention) and deicing (curing), which could turn into an environmentally friendly and cost-effective deicing method.

The use of recycled materials in asphalt mixtures such as reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) have become widely accepted as a replacement for virgin asphalt binder or virgin aggregates. In this study, the RAP content was 30%, and CR additives were blended with the soft unmodified binder by using dry processes. The objective of this study was to investigate and evaluate the engineering properties of dry method application of crumb rubber influences on reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) mixtures. To evaluate the effect of rubber-bitumen interaction on the mixture’s mechanical properties, a laboratory investigation has been conducted on a range of dense graded and 30% RAP by dry process crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt mixtures containing 0% (control), 1% crumb rubber by the total aggregate mass. The experimental program in this research include the binder extraction for estimating the amount of aged binder in the both fine and coarse RAP material. Before extracting the binder the RAP sieve analysis, have been done to provide the Black grading curve. In continue after the binder extraction the material sieved again to providing the white curve. The comparison of Black and White curve indicated that there is a remarkable difference between the aggregate grading even for the fine RAP. The experimental program was continued by fabricating 12 specimens in different 4 types of mixtures. For the first group no RAP, no rejuvenator and no crumb rubber were used. For the second group 30% of virgin aggregates substituted by RAP material and the third group was similar to the second group just with 0.01% rejuvenator. the forth group was the group, which in that the specimens contain RAP, rejuvenator and crumb rubber. Finally the specimens were tested for Indirect tensile strength. The results indicated that the addition of crumb rubber increased the optimum amount of binder in the mixture with 30% RAP.

Fossil manganese nodules and encrustations from seamount' and basin' localities in the Transdanubian Central Mountains of Hungary are lithologically, mineralogically and chemically similar to some modern marine ferromanganese oxide deposits, and show no evidence of postdepositional changes other than cementation. Five groups of deposits were encountered: Fe/Mn nodules, encrusted shells, pavements, stains, and Fe oxide encrusted intraclasts, the first three of which are specific to the 'seamount' environment and the last to the basins'. Optical and electron microprobe investigation of the samples shows them to exhibit many similarities with modern ferromanganese oxide deposits, and that many of the nodules are surrounded by a halo of dispersed ferromanganese oxides, strongly suggesting that they continued to accrete metals through the pore waters of unlithified sediments for a period after burial. By contrast, pavements which appear to have grown on hardgrounds at the sea floor show little or no evidence of derivation of metals from underlying sediments. Geochemical investigations on the deposits show the seamount' varieties to be closer in composition to most modern nodules and crusts than the basin' varieties, and that the latter are essentially manganese and trace-element-poor ferruginous deposits. Nevertheless, all can be more or less compositionally equated with modern ferromanganese oxide deposits forming in marginal Atlantic environments, which would be in accord with the proposed depositional environment of the Transdanubian Central Mountains based on other evidence.
